THE Department of Tourism (DOT) in Region 10 today launches 2015 as “Visit the Philippines Year” (VPY) in Northern Mindanao at the Activity Center of upscale Centrio Mall in Cagayan de Oro City. “This launch is a response to Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez Jr.’s directive to move tourism out of Manila and urge people

to visit other places such as Northern Mindanao,” said Catalino E. Chan III, DOT-10 regional director. AGAYAN de Oro City––A high-ranking officer of the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo) has warned residents to be vigilant against the possible presence of terrorists belonging to the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) group now resting in the city.

C hief Insp. L emuel Gonda, chief of the city’s p olice op erat ions and plans branch, said they have informed the local government and other law enforcement agencies about the reports they received that Cagayan de

Oro may be a target of the terrorists. Gonda said they also are coordinating with hotels and inns around the city. He added, however, that the reports are subject to continuous validation in the coming days. Gonda said precautionary measures have been enforced by the commanders in all police stations and outposts. “ The public has the right to know,” he said. January 9 is the schedule for the Black Nazarene procession around the city, a large public event. The vigil for this event will be held at the Pelaez Sports Center which has a seating capacity of thousands. Historical jottings and sources reveal that KUYAMIS is the original name of MISAMIS. It is a variety of sweet coconut, which was a staple food of the earliest known Negrito settlers of Misamis. The word “KUYAMIS” was later corrupted to “MISAMIS” when the Spanish colonizers came.

The highlight of the KUYAMIS FESTIVAL is the showcasing of products and by-products made out of the TREE OF LIFE - the COCONUT. It is high time to investigate airline companies for excessive fares, delays and dismal service

Last Christmas day the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 (NAIA 3) was in a real mess with long lines of passengers, delayed and cancelled flights. Passengers sit and sleep in floors and in stools for hours waiting for their flights. Several complaints had been lodged at the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) counter at NAIA 3. The complainants were passengers of Cebu Pacific Air who were not able to board their flights. The scene was the same in various airports throughout the country. It is sad to note that this become a common occurrence in our air-

ports for years now and are just among the numerous problems plaguing airline passengers. Delayed and cancelled flights; exorbitant rebooking fees and penalties. The other problem is that when it is the airlines who cancel or change schedules there are no penalties to refund the passengers. It is good that lawmakers are now also probing on the problem particularly for Cebu Pacific passengers who are deceived with low initial base fare but in the end the fare shoots up due to big taxes and surcharges . Another ridiculous charge that passengers are aghast is the web administration fee.

Where in the world could find that? Investigate also airlines which in several instances do not use the passenger tube making it difficult for the elderly and the sick as they have to go down the tarmac. What kind of service is this? A substantial decrease in fuel prices last year led to lower fares in jeepneys and other public transport but the airline rates have not gone down. A decrease in airline rates will not only result in a temporary relief for airline passengers but could also ease the rising

prices of some commodities transported through these airline companies. This is another assignment for law makers. These perennial problems have been plaguing passengers for a long time now. What have the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) done? It has failed to protect the interest of airline passengers. The dismal service and excessive fares of airline companies in the country and the inability of the Civil Aeronautics Board to protect airline passengers can backfire on the economy. Something must be done. Real hard.

Misamis Oriental launches the “Kuyamis Festival” on Monday to Friday at the sprawling provincial capitol ground to steer the province’s journey toward the prospect of 2015. A year ago, provincial Gov. Yevgency Vincente Emano, launched the weeklong festival to set the course of one of his administration’s flagship programs in a bid to put the province of Misamis Oriental in the country’s tourism roadmap. The young governor, believes that the development of the local tourism industry to its fullest would bring more jobs, infrastructure developments, and unequaled economic opportunities for the people of Misamis Oriental. sion of the long forgotten past that, again, has been put to life to reclaim the historic rights of its people. The domestic and foreign tourists expect the festival to display an array of the province’s indigenous creativeness that has persisted through the years since the province was created on Nov. 2, 1929 through Legislative Act No. 3537. The “Kuyamis Festival 2015” is an annual Thanksgiving and a tribute to the ancient norms of the”Aetas” or “Negritos” who thrived in Misamis with a variety of sweet coconuts as their staple food. “Kuyamis,” means a variety of golden colored sweet coconuts that are smaller (fist-sized) than the present variety of coconuts sold in the market today.

AMBOANGA CITY - The City Government rolls out on, January 5, the Business One Stop Shop (BOSS) initiative to make registration and renewal of permits more convenient to businessmen.

Most of the evacuees in Misamis Oriental and the city of Cagayan De Oro City were those who lived in the coastal areas and those near the banks of swollen rivers. Gov. Traders seek more police presence, CCTV cams in North Cotabato town

'LANG, North Cotabato -– With two deadly bombings happening in succession, traders here are asking for everybody’s cooperation and help in securing the town's center of commerce and trade. Lilia Cuerpo, president of the M'lang Market Vendors Association (MMVA), said ordinary vendors are the most vulnerable to violence, like in the Dec. 31 improvised explosive device (IED) explosion that left two female vendors dead and 33 other people wounded. Cuerpo noted that unlike owners of big business establishments, market vendors cannot afford to pay private security guards to secure their wares. Estelita Segura, vegetable vendor, said it was not the first time that bombing occurred in the densely populated market place. Several years back, bombings also happened in the area, one of which was a failed bombing attempt when the suspected bomber, carrying the explosive

in his backpack, was himself killed when the device went off prematurely. Segura also suggested that the market administration install closed-circuit TV cameras to monitor lawless elements. The M'lang market is not equipped with CCTV camera that could have monitored the Dec. 31 bomber. Celestino Bayona, another vendor, said he was standing nearby, watching people on rush shopping but did not notice anyone moving around suspiciously. ”Almost all were carrying plastic bags with fruits, food and other merchandise because the New Year was approaching,” he said. The vendors urged the local government unit and the police to deploy more policemen in the market, especially during market day and rush hours to prevent similar incidents in the future. PALAY production in the third quarter of 2014 grew by 5.79 percent to 190,930 metric tons as compared to the same period in 2013. In the quarterly report released by the National Economic Development Authority (Neda) 10 recently, the agency noted that increase in farm output in irrigated areas in Bukidnon during the quarter plus absence of infestation and good weather contributed much to the increase. Misamis Occidental also posted a 44 percent increase, contributing to the overall palay production in Northern Mindanao. In Misamis Oriental, sufficient rainfall and more usage of OPV seeds also contributed to the prolific yields. Meanwhile, rice sufficiency level during the third quarter of last year reached 83.63 percent or 1.53 percentage points higher

than the level recorded in the same period of 2013. The region’s total rice inventory as of September 2014 went up by 20 percent reaching 1,553,403 bags. Matured nuts reached 494,948,967 during the third quarter, higher by 1.11 percent or 5.4 million nuts than the 2013 level. All provinces in the region recorded positive growths led by Bukidnon at 3.61 percent. This is largely due to the salt fertilization intervention by the government. Along this line, copra production slightly increased by 0.20 percent over the 2013 output reaching 119,192 metric tons. Bukidnon made the highest gain by almost 1.2 percent. Average farm gate price of copra increased to P25.70 per kilogram. Average mill gate price also automatically increased by 29 percent to P28.25 per kilogram. Green nut production in the third quarter also exceeded the

2013 level by almost 16 percent. Coconut commodities exported during the third quarter increased by 11.5 percent to 93,816 metric tons equating to US$107.751 million in value. Gainers included cabbage, pechay, eggplant, calamansi, abaca and cabbage. Meanwhile, most fruit crops recorded output increases with papaya having the highest growth at 164 percent. Livestock and poultry production reached 87,835 metric tons (live weight) in the third quarter of 2014, up by three percent over the same period in 2013. But fish production declined by two percent due largely to lesser appearance of migratory species as a result of low pressure area occurrences.

DOT Launches Visit Philippines 2015 in Normin T

he Department of Tourism in Region X today launches 2015 as “Visit the Philippines Year” (VPY) in Northern Mindanao at the upscale Centrio Mall in Cagayan de Oro City. “This launch is a response to Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez, Jr.’s directive to move tourism out of Manila and urge people to visit other places such as Northern Mindanao,” said Catalino Chan III, DOT-X regional Director. Earlier Jimenez cited the key role of local government units (LGUs) in spurring tourism outside Metro Manila. "Kung saan masigasig talaga ang local [government], doon malakas ang tourism. Pag aktibista sa tourism ang LGU, magsa-succeed," Jimenez stressed. The DOT and the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB), its marketing and promotions arm, launched its new campaign during the Philippine Travel Exchange (PHITEX) at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City last September 4, 2014. Jimenez said the new campaign will not replace "It's More Fun in the Philippines” but is meant to refresh

and sustain the original campaign. DOT also launched a microsite (http:// phl2015.itsmorefuninthephilippines. com/) as a directory of the various events around the country under the recently improved DOT website (http:// itsmorefuninthephilippines.com/). Domingo Ramon C. Enerio III, TBP chief operating officer said the agency will stress five main themes for 2015: 1) history and culture, 2) music and arts 3) lifestyle and entertainment, 4) business meetings, and 5) sports, adventure, and eco-tourism. To kick off History and Culture in January 2015 is Pope Francis’ 40-day pilgrimage to the Philippines. September will mark the 70th anniversary of the final battles of World War II in the country. For Music and the Arts, Enerio said some of the biggest acts in the entertainment world such as One Direction and Justin Timberlake will visit the country in March 2015 for live performances and shows. In the fields of lifestyle and entertainment, the Philippines will host Madrid Fusion Manila, billed as the biggest culinary event in the world, in April 2015.
