DESTROYED. Hundreds of commuters are stranded after the Napo-Lapayan bridge that connects the town of Linamon and Kauswagan in Lanao del Norte collapsed Monday evening due to intermittent rain showers brought about by the Low Pressure Area (LPA) spotted by the the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa). CAGAYAN de Oro City––A bridge connecting the towns of Kauswagan and Linamon in Lanao del Norte collapsed Monday night, cutting off movements coming from Iligan, on one end, and from as far Ozamis City and other towns on the other end. Commuters coming from Dipolog City, Zamboanga and other towns via the Ozamis port were also affected. Hundreds of commuters were stranded since Monday night and vehicles have been filling up the national highway on both ends of the Napo bridge, which collapsed at 9:10 in the evening Monday, January 13, 2014. Supt. Madid Paitao, provincial police office director in Lanao del Norte, said half of the Napo bridge collapsed due to the swelling of Napo river.

Floods, landslides destroy 8 bridges DAVAO City––Flashfloods and landslides that hit the Davao region since last week destroyed at least eight major bridges. This was based on a situational report issued by the Department of Public Works and Highways 11 as of Tuesday morning.

MALAYBALAY City––The number of people affected by floods spawned by a Low Pressure Area (LPA) over Mindanao has climbed to 40,640 families or 199,327 individuals, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said. See floods, page 11

Floods displaced 40,000 families

Linamon is the eastern gateway to Lanao del Norte since it is the first municipality of southwestern province of Northern Mindanao. It is about 11.5-kilometer southwest of Iligan city, bounded in the east by the Linamon river, the Larapan river and the municipality of Kauswagan in the west. It is a coastal town of Lanao del Norte, where five of its eight barangays are situated along the Iligan Bay area. Kauswagan is also part of the Province of Lanao del Norte. Paitao said the only mode of transportation being used by commuters on Monday were motor-outriggers. Passenger buses plying the affected route reportedly received their passengers through motor-outriggers from the other end of the bridge.
