This is the inaugural address imparted to his brethren by the newly installed Worshipful Master of Misamis Oriental Lodge No. 335 for the Masonic Year 2014, Julius Ceasar Platon, during the installation of officers, held Saturday, February 8, 2014, at the Maguindanao Masonic Temple, along Capistrano-Pacana Sts., Cagayan de Oro City.

The occasion was graced by no less than Agila Shriner of Mindanao Potentate Peter U. Lim Lo Suy, who

assumes the highest and esteemed position, along with other officers during the installation of officers for the Shrine Year 2014, last January 25, at the Emerald Ballroom of the posh Limketkai Luxe Hotel.

Installed with WM Platon were Gary Booc for the position of Senior Warden and William Padilla as Junior Warden.

Sixteen other officers were also installed into their respective offices, including MisOr Lodge No. 335 Past President Ferdinand Bernasor, who now assumes as Tyler.

ROSPERIDAD, Agusan del Sur––Be sure with your respective tasks to protect the environment, a provincial board member urged members of the environmental council.

At the workshop last week, Sangguniang Panlalawigan member Hazel del Rosario, who also chairs the board’s enviroment committee, said it is very important that each agency member must submit the required mandate.

“This is in order for the council to determine the correct agency to give suggestions and recommendations to applicants for clearance from the provincial government before they will be issued permits by the regulating national government agency,” del Rosario said.

She particularly called on the Agusan del Sur Environment and Sustainable Development Council (ASESDC) to require member- agencies to submit their mandates related to environmental protection in line with the harmonization of the council’s functions as the extension arm on environmental protection of Agusan del Sur. “As obser ved, many member-agencies are absent or hesitant to attend during meetings or deliberations by the ASESDC because they are confused whether they are the concerned agency to give advises and recommendation to applicants for clearance from the provincial government to operate, whether a plantation, quarrying, mining and other business operation that involve environmental issues. That is why, it is very important that we define our responsibilities mandates so that in any way we can contribute to the effort of the government to protect our environment,” del Rosario said.

It has been observed that the Philippines is trying to cope with the Global Competitions when it comes to Education. Indeed, we are aware that Filipinos working abroad are required to add more years to complete the exact units of the degrees they have acquired.

We are always compared to the other countries in the number of years and levels of education but we

are also admired because of being perseverant, effective and efficient workers.

Different programs are introduced to suffice the needs of our learners in order to uplift the knowledge, skills and attitudes as the answer for being competitive to the other nations. We are now in the stewardship of the K to 12 Curriculum which is optimistically believed to cater best results of learning towards our pupils’/students’ Academic Performance.

This year’s program on Multiliteracy and Numeracy is of great help among our learners because it focused on Language, Reading and Mathematics. We all knew that the child should learn first his/her own Language at home Mother Tongue ( L-l); secondly our National Language Filipino ( L-2 ) and thirdly, the ( L-3 ) which is English. It is evident that providing our schoolchildren with Multiliteracy will build a good future in the world to come.

Likewise, having great knowledge and comprehension in Language and Reading are the avenues for the development of the numerical learnings among our schoolchildren in the Public School. It helped them to be equipped in the correct interpretation of the Mathematical problems which noticeably needs to be improved .

By then, it would make the pupils / students prepare themselves to face gigantic challenges in the world of numbers.

This is precisely true to the TEACHERS who act as secondary parents to their pupils in schools. A child looks up to the educator as PRECISE, PRIM and PROPER. The TEACHER is expected to act in accordance with the NORMS of the society while the students are supposed to TRUST the tutors even to the extent of disbelieving in their parents.

However, the ideal status of a typical TEACHER was blemished by pressures of POVERTY, POLITICAL INFLUENCE, as well as greed for POWER. POVERTY compels the teacher to indulge in LOANS, SIDE LINES and ILLICIT CONTRIBUTIONS from the pupils. POLITICAL INFLUENCE, on the other hand, manipulates the teacher to be prejudice in favor

of the privileged few while GREED FOR POWER persuades the teacher to demand recognition even at the expense of the students.

The OBJECT of EDUCATION is to prepare the YOUTH to educate themselves throughout their lives.

Adherence to this principle empowered the educators to recapture their shrinking dignity. With the course of modern learning strictly executed by the Department of Education, the teachers raised their self esteem.

The pupils uphold the distinctive reverence to their respective teachers and the communities’ regard the tutors just as they were recurrently considered few decades previously.

Nowadays, the motto “Excellence is our habit, Perfection is our goal” can be referred to the sort of education conveyed by the teachers to the students as they regain their reputation.

MES DEWORMING ACTIVITY

Kinder up to Grade VI pupils of Midkiwan Elementary School were dewormed last Februay 4, 2014 by the Southwest District II nurse, Ms. Marie Nikki Jo M. Valmoria.

The deworming activity is given twice a year to the pupils to solve their health problems especially those related to stomachaches which can affect their learning

activity thereby affecting also the results of achievement tests.

Pupils formed their lines and gladly received the free medicine from the nurse. Instructions were given before and after taking the medicine. Indeed, this activity by the Department of Education helps solve the health problems of the pupils especially those in far-flung sitios of this Division.

WHAT DOES OUR ANGER DO FOR US?

Anger is one of the most basic human emotions. Everyone gets angry.

It’s a feeling of being against someone or something. It’s a hostile emotion that sets people against each other, or even against themselves. By nature, anger involves antagonism.

Most of us would probably agree that much of our anger is wrong and should be avoided. But if we hate our anger as much as we say we do, why do we hang on to it? The answer, in part, is that we cling to it because we fail to recognize the purpose behind our antagonistic strategies. It is what we believe our anger does for us that keep us hanging on to it.

We nurture our anger because,

consciously or unconsciously, we believe it functions for us in these three ways: (1) It protects us from additional pain, (2) it deflects responsibility away from our inadequate love for others, and (3) it keeps us people at a manageable distance to ensure that we don’t have to risk giving our hearts to others and get hurt in the process.

Let’s look at each of these functions of anger individually.

1. Self-protection. I hate going to the dentist because I hate pain. But I still go to the dentist. And I even pay him to hurt me by drilling out a cavity.

Why? Because I hate the thought of more pain. If I refuse to deal with a little pain now, I will have to deal with greater pain later when decay in my tooth reaches the nerve. This is the

This is the main reason that the Indigenous People of the Nation were given due priority in gaining entrée into Literacy as ascertained by a Memorandum Circular issued by the Department of Education secretary DR. ARMIN A. LUISTRO, FSC providing primacy to the Indigenous People as others call it ‘IP takes front seat in the Philippine Education’.

As Teacher-in-Charge of Laruk Elementary School, a Prime School at Kisolon, Sumilao, Bukidnon, I prepared an INNOVATION designed to address the issue on Indigenous People’s percipience in the field of Education. It was instigated with identifying the different tribes present in the area, understanding their culture and getting acquainted with applicable methods to meet their educational needs. Moreover, I ensured that such innovations will be included in the COMMUNITY EDUCATION IMPROVEMENT PLAN arranged wisdom of preventive dentistry.

So how do I live as an emotional being in a world that provides a regular dose of pain every day? Rather than facing my pain (remember my disappointed longings), I will often choose to be angry because anger is easier to control than pain and disappointment.

2. Deflection. Anger often shows up when we are caught red-handed in a wrong. Instead of feeling the weight of our sin and accepting responsibility for our actions, we get angry. We use our anger as an offensive weapon against those who expose and shame us. We try to turn the tables on them to get the attention off from us. We try to intimidate them into accepting the message, “I’m not the problem here, you are!”

3. Distancing. Anger can also be

Like porcupines, we use barbs of antagonism and intimidation to keep others at a distance, thereby protecting the soft flesh of our own insecurities or flaws.

Think of people you find intimidating. Maybe it’s your boss, your father, or your spouse. Often they are people who use anger to create space for themselves. They may come across as strong and confident. But underneath the bravado they are weak.

They can’t afford to allow anyone to get close enough to see their fear or their insecurity.

The self-protective, deflecting, and distancing functions of anger can feel like they are working for us. As a result, we might blindly hang on till death.

Who is untouchable?

The recent brouhaha over the “arrest” of David Tan has caused confusion among government agencies and officials. They don’t seem to know what to do with a 33-year old man whose identity baffled Department of Justice (DOJ) bureaucrats and National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) agents. And like a hot potato, the country’s top justice and law enforcement officials closed the investigation and set Tan free without further action.

The bizarre incident was the offshoot of allegations made by the Federation of Philippine Industries (FPI) chairman Jesus Arranza that a certain Davidson Bangayan alias “David Tan” was a major rice smuggler wanted by authorities. When Bangayan read news reports naming him as a “big-time rice smuggler,” he showed up at DOJ on January 14 and personally met with Justice Secretary Leila de Lima. He denied that he was the “David Tan” accused of being a major rice smuggler.

Leila-de-Lima.35With the ease by which Bangayan accessed de Lima – presumably without an appointment – it makes one wonder what kind of connections Bangayan used to open doors to DOJ’s top honcho?

Accompanied by his lawyer, Bangayan told de Lima that he was not engaged in “major rice importation” as reported in the news and that his rice business was “not that big.” De Lima took Bangayan’s explanation hook, line, and sinker and told reporters that since Bangayan’s rice business was “not that big,” he couldn’t be the big-time smuggler he was accused of. When Bangayan offered to cooperate, de Lima referred him to the NBI. But when Bangayan showed up at the NBI, an arrest warrant against “David Tan” was served on him. After a cursory investigation, the NBI concluded that Bangayan was not the David Tan wanted by a Caloocan City court for electricity pilferage, so Bangayan was released.

Connections But NBI Deputy Director Virgilio Mendez contradicted the findings and insisted that they have “evidence and witnesses to prove that” Bangayan and Tan are one and the same person. NBI records showed that Bangayan and Tan have the same address. Why then did the lower-ranked investigators let him go? Could it be that there was someone higher and powerful who interceded for Bangayan?

Lot 1, ACCO Homes Langaray St., cor. Dagat-Dagatan Avenue, Caloocan City.” It seemingly shields Davidson Bangayan, Rosalind Galicia, and Venson Bangayan from arrest.

The fact that Bangayan carries a valid Philippine passport (issued on May 18, 2011) supports the presumption that Bangayan is the real McCoy. If so, who then is David Tan? Smuggling King On January 22, Sen. Cynthia Villar, chairperson of the Senate committee on agriculture, said her committee has documents that prove Davidson Bangayan and “smuggling king” David Tan are the same person.

She said de Lima and Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile submitted documents that proved it. She also said that rice smugglers couldn’t operate without the help of corrupt government officials… or, I might add, powerful and influential private individuals.

On January 28, Customs Deputy Commissioner Agaton Teodoro Uvero dropped a bombshell at the Senate hearing. He said that at the height of the rice smuggling, they were bringing in 2,000 containers week, which translates to 50,000 tons a week at 25 tons per 20-foot shipping container. These huge shipments of smuggled rice won’t be able to get past Customs inspection without the collusion of Customs officials.

Last February 3, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte testified before the Senate committee what he knows about David Tan. He said that Tan is the central figure in rice smuggling in the country.

He is the go-to guy for farmer cooperatives who go to him for help in importation and financing because they don’t have the capacity to import rice. He said that Tan would provide import permits to rice importers who would re-use them many times over because corrupt Customs inspectors do not stamp them.

He said that rice smuggling without the connivance of Customs and National Food Authority (NFA) personnel would be very hard, if not impossible.

When a senator asked Mayor Duterte if he knew how Tan looks like, he produced a photo of Tan that he claimed was given to him by the police. When he was asked if the person on the photo was the same person as Davidson Bangayan, who was seated nearby, he pointed at Bangayan and answered in the affirmative. Right after Duterte fingered Bangayan, Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile made a motion to cite Bangayan for contempt for lying to the Senate committee denying that he was David Tan. Sen. Enrile showed an affidavit executed by Bangayan in a 2005 libel case in which he referred to himself as “David Tan,” the alleged rice smuggling king. Sen. Villar said that the committee would decide on the motion in the next committee meeting.

With Enrile’s revelation, one wonders how did Bangayan become the “rice smuggling king” that controls the importation and financing of rice in the entire country? And how could a 33-year old person who started his rice importation business only in 2011 manage to dominate and control rice smuggling in just two years?

Could it be that he is just the front man or “dummy” of a rice smuggling syndicate?

Ruby Tuason Ruby Tuason, the cousin by affinity to former first gentleman Miguel “Mike” Arroyo, is in the limelight because of her decision to tell-all what she personally knows about the P10 billion pork barrel scam that the government is saying was engineered by Janet Lim Napoles.

Tuason is the widow of the late Philippine Sports Commission chair Butch Tuason, who is a close blood relations of Arroyo thus this early insinuations are aplenty that this pork barrel fund scam might reach the doorsteps of the latter, if not the former president herself.

Perhaps this surfacing

by Tuason to tell all that she knows about this scam is the reason why lately there seems to be a concerted effort at projecting the jailed former president and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo as a victim of oppression perpetrated against her by the Aquino administration.

Former and incumbent officials and even some leading bishops of the Roman Catholic Church have made themselves available to push this propaganda.

This propaganda of Gloria Arroyo being unjustifiably oppressed by the administration in power just did not fly. Why, because it scraped to the bottom of the propaganda barrel when even the basic prohibition for detainees not to have pictures taken with their visitors was made an issue.

Where in the world can you find a detainee for plunder and electoral sabotage with imposable punishment of life in prison enjoying to the hilt while in detention by having her photo take with her guests at her detention cell that in her case is the suite room of the Veterans Hospital? Arroyo perhaps forgot that she is in that room courtesy of the Filipino people not as a patient but as a detainee whose enjoyment of all her basic rights is now being curtailed.

But with Tuason’s coming out in the open and the great possibility that her testimony will add more woes to the Arroyo couple, I am a bit convinced now that the propaganda aimed at winning public sympathy for the detained Gloria Arroyo by projecting her as a victim of oppression is in reality meant to insulate her from the impact of Tuason’s testimony.

Remember that the bulk

of the findings of NBI about the pork barrel scam allegedly initiated by Napoles covered the period when Gloria Arroyo was president. Even the questionable release of P900 million of the Malampaya funds that reportedly just went to the pocket of several politicians including several appointive officials of the government likewise happened during Gloria Arroyo’s watch.

If indeed the hands of the former president and her spouse could be seen in all these mind-boggling diversion of multi-million pesos of government funds to the pockets of those alleged to be involved, expectedly this early they will already prepare in a subtle way a propaganda aimed at exonerating them in the bar of public opinion. Toward this end, I could vividly remember what former Arroyo administration official Mike Defensor told another whistleblower, Jun Lozada, when the latter also came out in the open to tell all about the multi-million pesos overprice of the NBNZTE project that it’ll all boil down to propaganda war in the media in winning public sympathy.

Going back to Tusaon, I surmise her coming out in the open must have made those linked to the P10 billion pork barrel scam figuratively scampering.

She must have sent spine tingling tremors to the accused that they are now into counter-propaganda.

How damning her testimony is against the accused is yet to be known or ascertained but they are all in a defensive posturing now even before Tuason’s testimony is laid down. Engaging in counter-propaganda at this early only succeeds in projecting the accused are indeed worried. And why would they be worried if indeed there is nothing to worry as they tried their best to convince the public about their innocence?

While Tuason’s testimony so far just corroborated substantially the testimony of the whistleblowers in this particular scam, hers is more damning so far also because she personally confirmed receipt by the accused of their share of the loot. She claimed she personally handed to them their share in cold cash.

She is in effect telling the accused that how can you deny when it was I who handed your share of the loot personally to you?

We must prepare against invasion

Our government is not doing anything to protect our country in case of surprise invasion by a foreign enemy.

As we all know, tension is high between our country and China owing to the dispute over oil-rich islands claimed by both countries.

6 ASGs killed, 9 others wounded in Sulu encounter

SULU - Six members of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) were killed while nine others, including six civilian volunteers, were wounded in an encounter in Barangay Mabahay, Talipao town, Sulu Saturday.

In a belated report to Armed Forces of the Philippines public affairs office chief Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala, Col. Jose Johriel Cenabre, 2nd Marine Brigade commander, said the incident took place between 10:20 to 10:30 a.m.

According to Cenabre, they were conducting clearing operations in Barangay Mabahay, a known enclave of the ASG, when they encountered with an estimated 50 of the brigands headed by one "Yasser Igasan."

Six ASG men were killed in the firefight while three others were wounded.

No deaths were reported for government troops but six members of the "Barangay Peacekeeping Action Team" (BPAT) helping them in their clearing operations were hurt.

Cenabre said fighting lasted until Saturday night. He added that of the six wounded BPATs, two were already flown to Zamboanga for treatment.

All six wounded are reported to be in a stable condition.

BJMP tightens security at Dipolog City Jail

DIPOLOG CITY - Jail authorities has tightened security at the Dipolog City Jail in Barangay Dicayas, as proliferation of illegal drugs has been noted in the premises.

City Jail Warden Allan Vargas said an inmate was caught in possession of five grams of shabu during a surprise inspection conducted among the prisoners last Jan. 28.

Such incident nearly caused riot inside the jail as the said detainee refused to get out of his cell by seeking refuge from his co-inmates when he was taken out and transferred to Dapitan City Jail last Jan. 29 on a court order.

No one was injured during the commotion but Vargas admitted having fired a warning shot to ease the tension.

The said detainee, who was jailed for illegal drugs, has been placed under surveillance by jail officials as a

suspect behind the entry of the illegal drugs at the city jail “using his connection with the underworld.”

Vargas also directed his men to impose stricter measures on the inmate’s visitors and to inspect thoroughly their personal belongings during the visit particularly the food.

Presently, a closed-circuit television camera was installed to ensure that all visitors are identified and all activities are monitored.

“We are doing our best to prevent the entry of illegal drugs,” Vargas declared.

Last year, 10 pieces of plastic sachets containing shabu were placed inside a wrapped a bottle of perfume was recovered near the kitchen of the jail. Jail authorities believed that said item was thrown from outside by unidentified passers.

“What makes this unusual is Great White Egrets are migratory, they don’t breed here in the Philippines.

They breed somewhere else and they come here during winter but because of the favorable condition found at the fish pond of ZSCMST, the Great White Egrets stayed all year round and breed,” she added.

She noted that the Pasonanca Natural Park, which is one of the old growth forests in Mindanao rich in biodiversity, is home to various species, some of them are even endemic to

Small miners surprised at ID requirement D

AVAO CITY – Small-scale miners from the gold-rich town of Pantukan, Compostela Valley cried foul to the latest move of large-scale mining company National Development Corporation (Nadecor) which allegedly put up a steel gate and told them to get an identification card from the mining regulatory agencies of the government.

The steel gate is located a few meters from Sitio BukoBuko sa Anay in Barangay KingKing, a 40-minute motorcycle ride from the town center of Pantukan.

The Diat Small Scale Miners Associaion (DSSMA) said the gate was put up by the Calalang group.

“They told mine owners last year to get an ID but we only know of it now. We have to go to the provincial government to secure one. It will cost P600 per person,” said Rowena Maisog, a representative of the DSSMA. Nadecor owns a 1,656-hectare tenement in Barangay Kingking in Pantukan but it is currently in an “intra-corporate” dispute which divided it into two factions: the Calalang group and the Ricafort group.

Small scale miners said there was an alleged letter dated January 3 that Nadecor personnel distributed to them and to the residents who pass through the gate regularly. The directive contained in the letter gave them 15 days upon receipt to get an ID. The letter was allegedly signed by a certain Dan Valenzuela.

“We have been living there for decades. In fact

many already died and now we are being required to have an ID,” said Maisog.

Maisog said that the move barred access to other barangays where residents and miners live like in Sitio Diat in Barangay Napnapan.

“One mine owner in just one tunnel in our sitio alone has 1,000 miners,” she said.

Maisog said they were worried that this was a step Nadecor was taking to eventually ease out small scale miners and farmers from the area.

Maisog said other individuals and groups were also barred.

Sixteeen delegates of the Ecumenical Bishops Forum, who were in the country for a conference on “the United State’s intervention on sovereign nations”, were not allowed to enter the tenement. The group went to the area last January 14 to see the situation of farmers and small scale miners.

The “sudden” requirement of an ID confused small miners who said they were “frantic” upon hearing the news saying that they considered it a “threat” to their lives. Maisog said she thought it at first that the ID was required by the Mines

But, MGB OIC-Director for Mining Environment and Safety Division Noel B. Angeles said their offices did not require an ID from the residents and that they have no provincial office.

“The only issuing ID to small scale miners is the provincial government.

It might be also that the mining company there is requiring such identification system to control influx

of people,” said Angeles.

Maisog clarified that they were to apply with the Provincial Mining Regulatory Board for the ID. In 2010, Nadecor tapped the US-based St. Agustine Gold and Copper Ltd and Russel Mining and Minerals, Inc. (RMMI) to fund the $2-billion Kingking gold and copper project. In 2012, Queensberry Mining & Development Corporation, which is reportedly owned by former Philippine Senator Manuel Villar, invested

$11 million to St. Agustine.

Belen Galleto of the Save Pantukan Alliance said the small scale miners expected more displacement if a bigger large scale mining company would start its operation. Galleto said Napnapan Mineral Resources, Inc (NMRI) will also start its operations soon. NMRI owns a 4,000 hectares in Pantukan.

Galleto said that small scale miners and farmers of Sitio Gumayan, the site of the open-pit operation of Nadecor have already contested the ID system of the company before Mayor Roberto Yugo.

Galleto said that almost all municipalities of Compostela Valley have mining operations owned by largescale mining companies.

Iza Calzado wants people to stop making comparisons between her and Toni Gonzaga

Marami na nga ang nag-aabang sa Valentine movie offering ng Star Cinema na Starting Over Again na pinagbibidahan nina Piolo Pascual at Toni Gonzaga kung saan kabilang si Iza Calzado. Sa bloggers conference ng pelikulang ito, ibinahagi ni Iza ang ilan sa mga bagay na dahilan ng kanyang excitement sa pelikulang ito.

“I was excited with the prospect of working with Inang (movie director Olivia Lamasan) and doing it makes me very excited everyday going to work, knowing that I was going to be directed by Inang Olive. Working with Toni Gonzaga was a first for me in acting, and then getting another chance to work with Piolo was also very exciting for me.

“I know that my character plays a very crucial, vital part of the film and knowing that excites me more.

Sometime later, when he started handling sensational cases defending highly prominent personalities, I received a call from him. Naturally, I realized the great honor he was giving me, knowing, as I came to know later, that he had not made the same offer to anyone prior to his calling me.

Regrettably, however, I had to apologize profusely to him, because I could not take the offer. The reason was that, when his call came to me, my siblings and I had already formed a law partnership among ourselves, and considering that they had to give up high-paying jobs in media just to put up a law office bearing our family name, I felt I could not just leave them alone then, even if I was to benefit greatly from the justice’s offer.

Fortunately, with the good heart that Justice Cuevas had, he understood my predicament. We parted ways with him telling me that should I have any need for his assistance, I should not hesitate reaching out to him. The Japanese now is making modern fighter jets, vessels, guns and ammunitions in preparation for war.

Japan is ready to protect its country by all means and their men are disciplined people who are willing to die for their country.

In contrast, we have people who are ready to run away to the hills or some becoming spies when cornered.

Many of our people lack discipline and loyalty.

Our country, sad to state, is not doing any preparation in case of an attack.

We have few old model fighter jets, warships and cannons. I cannot figure out what we can do if enemies come to our shores.

Our leaders are busy fighting with each other while some of them are vacationing in foreign lands and still others busy deliberating on small issues.

Still others are plain celebrities. Very few are knowledgeable of the movements of nations and international leaders.

The thing that our country needs most is disciplined people and genuine love towards the country.

In the first place, we had many bad leaders ever since who failed to show their love and concern of the people.

Some of them chose to lead because they think it is the only shortcut to wealth, honor and power.

Leaders come and go and the country is choked further to the ground, thus we remain in extreme poverty and devastation.

There are two films from Cebu, one from Bacolod and another one from Iloilo.

“Sonata” by Peque Gallaga from Bacolod will kick start the screening and to be followed by “Iskalawags” by Keith Deligero from Cebu, “Salvi: Ang PAgpadayon”

by T.M. Malones and “Domingo Domingo” by Chloe Veloso, Nicko Real.

“Iskalawags” is a story of seven young punks who call their gang with the title itself because of their shared love for action movies. They decided to go on a little adventure where they search for a tree, led by Palot, the leader of the group.

Lastly, as part of the seg-

ment, CineMulat Visayas, “B. Niyaang B. Niyaan” by Russ Ligtas will be shown at Xavier University Little Theater (XULT) on Feb 20, 5-6p.m.

This film from Cebu is the sole entry for the CineMulat of the second-day screening.

Cinemulat is the part of the festival where controversial movies are being shown.

Moviegoers are only required to bring personal care items such as soap, toothpaste and toothbrush, sanitary napkins or infant diapers for the admission to the screening venues.

6th Cinema Rehiyon: What Visayas has to offer

It keeps getting better and that’s what the 6th Cinema Rehiyon is going to do on February 18-22 under the banner of Xavier University’s Xavier Center for Culture and the Arts (XCCA) where the films from Visayas will dominate the second-day screening of the festival—Feb 20, to be exact.

From the Visayas, 21 films, under 5 various programs, will be offered to the moviegoers. These programs were categorized according to regions.

Cinema Rehiyon is a flagship program of the Nat i on a l C om m i ss i on for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) in celebration of

February as the National Arts Month (NAM).

The festival is one of the few events seeking to empower the Filipinos with stories and voices from their own region—a detour from the escapist films offered by the mainstream line.

Ambitions, zombies and music From Sine Sais (Region 6), Bacolod has three films and one from Antique to be shown at SM City Cagayan de Oro Cinema 3, 10-11:30a.m.

“Kwerdas” by Sammy Rubido, the sole film from Antique is about the inseparable siblings—Oday and Toto— who love music.

Then Toto got into trouble and in order for him to be saved from their father’s

anger, Oday must abandon the instrument that is responsible for her love of music. Will she succumb in obeying the family patriarch or choose what makes her happy?

Joining “Kwerdas” in the list are the Bacolod films, “Sa Mata Sang Bata”

by Abigail Uychiat, “Zompranings” by Poli Gonzales and Leo Aguirree, and “RB” (Rugby Boys) by Manny Montelibano.

Uychiat’s film is about a dancer who is trapped in a world of chaos, lost in fear and anxiety where the performer has to choose if she wants to live her ambitions or succumb in terror.

“Z ompr a n i n g s ,” on the other hand, is a story about two guys who were

The ‘emotional dog’ Moving on to Sine 7 (Region 7), there are 9 films to air at the same cinema, from 11:30a.m. to 2:30p.m.

The lineup includes “Lamat” by Peter Arthur Shafer from Bohol and films from Cebu—“Unod” by George Macapagal, “Happy Ang Emo Nga Iro” by Aldo Nelbert Banaynal, “Death Squad” by Jose Basa and “InaTay” by Chloe Veloso.

“Lamat” is a story of Dina, a working student,

who found out—with Lara and Josie— that their mutual friend was murdered in her room. The accident has emerged personal problems within the tight-knit group, slowly deteriorating their friendship in the process.

“Happy Ang Emo Nga Iro” is a tale about a dog’s daily challenges through a series of ill-fated events as he searches for the true meaning of happiness in the family who adopted him.

“InaTay” is the third film of Veloso and it is about a story of Elvis (who is known by everyone as Elvira), a beautician who learned that he has fathered a baby boy and now, he faces the challenges of being a single parent.

Moreover, Dumaguete

has 2 films and Iloilo has 3 to offer for this year’s Cinema Rehiyon.

“Swim for Others,” a documentary film by Carmen del Prado and the other one, “Ugma na Lang” were shot in Dumaguete and those from Iloilo are “Kapawa: The Mystery of Light” by Noel de Leon, “Luna” by Frances Lacuesta and “The Wish” by Regie Regiane.

Sine 8 Under the Sine Otso (Region 8) are two short films from Samar and Leyte, which will be shown at the same cinema, 2:30-3:10p.m.
