Creation of a research body on mining pushed By Ma. Victoria I. Palomar

A lawmaker is urging Congress to approve a bill creating a research body to make mining activities in the country become more responsible and ultimately more acceptable to the people. Rep. Erlpe John “Ping” M. Amante (2nd District, Agusan del Norte) said House Bill 5293 establishes the National Research Center for Sustainable Mineral Industry (NRCSMI), which shall lead in the research and development of sustain-

able practices and technologies in the mineral industry. Amante said the Philippines is blessed with very large quantities of mineral resources valued at over $1 trillion making it the 5th most mineralized country in the world. However, “despite its vast reserves, the country is unable to maximize these endowments due mainly to the negative public perception towards the mining industry,” Amante said. TOP Catholic Church officials expressed gratitude to Pope Francis on Sunday afternoon during the concluding Eucharistic celebration at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila. In separate messages delivered before the Holy Father, Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle and Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) both thanked the Pontiff for coming to the Philippines and for inspiring and touching the lives of the Filipino faithful. “In the name of the Archdiocese of Manila, the people who worked tirelessly for your pastoral visit, and the Filipinos whom you have been strengthened in faith these past days, I once again say Thank You. I say ‘Maraming Salamat po’ (Thank you very much) on behalf of the street children, the orphans, the widows,

the homeless, the informal settlers, the laborers, the farmers, the fisher folk, the sick, the abandoned elderly, the families of missing persons, the victims of discrimination, violence, abuse, exploitation, human trafficking, the Filipino migrant workers and their families, the survivors of natural calamities and armed conflicts, the nonChristian Catholics, the followers of non-Christian religions, the promoters of peace especially in Mindanao and creation that groans,” the Cardinal said. He also assured Pope Francis that the Filipino people will continue to pray for him. “You often end your encounters with people by saying, ‘I ask you to pray for me.’ We promise to pray for you. But we want to assure you that Jesus prays for you. Jesus himself declared to Peter, ‘I have prayed See CHURCH, page A9

Christians urged by Pope Francis in fourth Filipino tweet to ‘serve the needy’ By Azer N. Parrocha

GO out to the needy, Pope Francis urged in his fourth tweet on his official Twitter account, @Pontifex on Sunday just moments before he lead his last mass in the country at the Quirino Grandstand.

The Pope had once again tweeted in Filipino, making this the fourth tweet translated in the vernacular since he arrived the country for his five-day Apostolic visit from Jan 15 to 19. “Bilang Kristiyano, miyembro ng pamilya ng Diyos, tinatawag tayo upang

hanapin at paglingkuran ang lahat ng mga nangangailangan,” the Pope said. He earlier posted the same tweet in English: “We who are Christians, members of God’s family, are called to go out to the needy and to serve them.” In his past Filipino-cen-

tric tweets—one he posted on Saturday—the Pope also echoed the same message he shared with the survivors of typhoon “Yolanda” and pilgrims during his mass at the Tacloban Airport in Leyte. “Ang kahabagan ng Diyos, ang kanyang sakripisyo,

ay nagbibigay saysay at halaga sa lahat ng ating paghihirap, (The com-passion of God, his suffering-with-us, gives meaning and worth to our struggles and our sufferings),” the Pope said. He also tweeted twice on Friday, first about the youthfulness and vitality of

the Church: “Ang Pilipinas ay patunay ng kabataan at kasiglahan ng Simbahan.” And the second one, dealing with family being the greatest treasure of any country: ““Ang pamilya ay ang pinakamahalagang kayamanan ng isang bansa. See NEEDY, page A9
