Aliens urged to register at BI or face deportation SURIGAO City––The Bureau of Immigration (BI)Surigao office will launch the Alien Registration Program this October to account all the foreigners in Surigao del Norte. Carlos F. de Peralta, acting alien control officer of BI-Surigao said the registration process will start on October 1 and end on September 30 next year. “This program aims to account, register, re-register, capture information, update BI alien data base and would provide assistance for visarelated problems,” he told MindaNews. Peralta admitted there are a few overstaying aliens in the province. He said aliens registered under this program may become primary beneficiaries of future social integration and legalization programs of the government. In a statement, BI Commissioner Siegfred Mison said there are around 1.5 million foreigners in the country but only about 200,000 are registered with the BI. Mison said foreigners staying beyond the allowable 59 days are required by law to register with the BI. Increase in govt’s financial aide eyed
GENERAL Santos City–– The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is studying the possibility of increasing the financial grants under the national government’s flagship conditional cash transfer (CCT) program in the wake of the rising prices of various commodities. Bai Zorahayda Taha, DSWD Region 12 director, said the DSWD central office may adjust the monthly health and education grants of the program’s beneficiaries to help them cope with the increasing food prices. She said the agency has yet to determine the exact figures as to the proposed increase in the cash grants that would likely be implemented next year. “Prices of food products have swelled these past months so we’re working to address that,” Taha said in a statement. JABOY, Pilar, Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte––Some residents fish in Paghungawan Marsh in this barangay, but Philippine freshwater crocodiles also hunt for food in the same environs, setting off a competition that appears to have put the endangered predators at a disadvantage. Thir t y-six ye ar-old crocodiles, comprising 30 females and six males which were bred in captivity, were freed in the marshland on March 22 last year. The crocodiles belong to the species Crocodylus
