AVAO City–– The National Democratic Front of the Philippines has condemned the arrest by police and military authorities of a senior communist rebel leader in Davao City. It said the arrest of Roy Erecre, who was nabbed with his girlfriend Judith Niog on May 7, was illegal and demanded his immediate release from jail.

Magnitude 6.3 quake jolts Negros Occidental THE government-run Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Philvocs) on Thursday afternoon said a 6.3 magnitude earthquake rocked parts of Negros Occidental. In its bulletin, Phivolcs said the tremor occurred at 6:16 p.m. with its epicenter traced 49 kilometers southwest of Hinoba-an in Negros Occidental wherein Intensity 5 was also felt in the area. MISAMIS Oriental––The provincial government of Misamis Oriental will release a total of P550,000 financial assistance to 11 public elementary schools here on Friday, said provincial Governor Yevgency Vincente Emano on Thursday. Emano said that the fund for each public elementary school would form part of
the province’s assistance under the “Brigada sa Eskwela” program. He said that the money would be used to repair and refurbish schools and classrooms in order to provide a conducive environment for learning. “I value the education of our pupils and students in the province and one factor
for them to succeed is we provide them convenient classroom environment,” Emano said in a statement released to the media here. He said that the Brigada sa Eskwela is an annual activity of the Department of Education (DepEd) that promotes volunteers among pupils and students, parents, teachers and different civic organizations. Palace to Ched: monitor unreasonable tuition hike THE Palace on Thursday directed the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to ensure that there will be no unreasonable tuition fee increase in private universities and colleges. In a press briefing, Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said that while some tuition fee hikes are inevitable, the CHED should ensure that the guidelines and requirements provided by the law on tuition fee increase
