CAGAYAN de Oro City–– The local chief executive of Balingasag, Misamis Oriental, had lauded the arrest of seven drug suspects over the weekend. Mayor Alexis S. Quina said this development is good for the municipality. “Here in Balingasag no one is above the law,” he said. Two of the arrested men, identified by the local police as Porfirio Roa Jr. and Roy Roa, are younger brothers of Vice Mayor Marrietta Roa-Abogado. Quina also lauded the vice mayor for not intervening in the police operation. “I share the pain she is going through,” he said. The municipal police office has charged in court the seven suspects. AVAO del Norte ––Provincial Governor Rodolfo P. del Rosario recently recognized the important role that private media practitioners play in disseminating balanced and fair information to the public. In addressing the program on October 31 that capped the observance of Press Freedom Month in October, Del Rosario acknowledged the media sector as the 4thstate telling the practitioners of their crucial role as the critical eye to screen activities of government official. ”You are the one who will say whether a government official is doing the right thing or not,” he said during the program cum dinner that Del Rosario hosted through the Provincial Information Office (PIO). However, Del Rosario reminded media practitioners of the need for them to maintain “independence” saying, “that is the role you are expected to perform”. But he asked them to be “fair” in their reportage and to “come up with right news and information” using the traditional media:

The program cum dinner that Gov. del Rosario hosted on the night of October 31 through the PIO, wrapped up the series of media activities focusing on academe, tourism and climate change and local governance. It conducted a training on audio video production and television reporting inviting in as participants high school and college students particularly the school-paper members. On Oct. 17, PIO tied

up media partnership with thetourism sector and brought the private media practitioners and the LGU information officers to Talikud Island being developed by the provincial government of Davao del Norte as a tourist destination. On media and climate change, PIO featured the Oplan ANDAM (Awareness on Natural Disaster and Mitigation), the primary disaster risk reduction

management program of the provincial government. PIO brought the media partners to Cuambogan in Tagum City where the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (PDDRMO) taught them some life-saving techniques and got them involved in a crisis communication management workshop. In the later part of October, PIO organized the

Surigao town villagers fear escalation of conflict

URIGAO City – Residents of a barangay in Bacuag town in Sur igao del Nor te expressed fears of a possible escalation of conflict after clashes between government forces and New People’s Army (NPA) rebels on Sunday. The encounters o ccurred in Sitio Little Baguio in Barangay Payapag, Bacuag and left two soldiers killed. Some 30 NPA rebels first clashed with government troops at around 8:00 p.m. on All Souls Day leaving one soldier killed, Lt. Colonel Arsenio Sadural, commanding officer of the 30th Infantry Battalion

told MindaNews on Monday evening, November 3. Sadural said the rebels belong to the Sandatahang Platun Pampropaganda of Guerrilla Front Committee 16. A n ot h e r e n c ou nt e r erupted at 4:00 p.m. on the same day in the same place killing one soldier and wounding two others, he added. Some villagers said they might be forced to evacuate if the hostilities escalated. “I hope they should stop this because we might be caught in the crossfire,” John Delgado, a farmer from Bacuag said in a text message. “Unta wala na gira kay hasol kaayo mag bakwit ,

Bangsamoro Law to benefit all Lawmakers are hoping that the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) will be approved swiftly as it is beneficial to people from all sectors—whether they are Christians, Muslims, or indigenous peoples (IPs) and will bring peace and progress in Mindanao and the rest of the country. Cagayan de Oro second district Representative Rufus Rodriguez, says “the BBL [hopes to bring peace and progress to] all Bangsamoro and Filipinos. It is not only for the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).” The BBL is the legal iteration of the Comprehensive Agreement on the

TEACHER‘S SENSE OF EFFICACY IN CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT By Reina Marie G. Ebisa Patrocinio National High School Claveria, Misamis Oriental

Classroom management has proved to be a plaguing aspect of the teaching and learning process over the past century. This single skill has heavily contributed to teacher stress and burnout teacher performance in the classroom and is commonly a major concern of principals regarding new teachers. Scholarly research indicates that teachers need training on classroom management. It was also found out that most novice teachers are usually shocked by the realities of the classroom, often despite initial training and support from the administration. Teachers should be adequately prepared for the first three years of teaching. Previous research states that novice teachers do not feel that they were well prepared by their teacher education programs . Some studies linked a teacher’s level of self-efficacy with student behavior. Teachers with higher levels of self-efficacy perceive lower levels of student misbehaviour. Self-efficacy refers to the level of confidence that one has about one’s own ability to perform a certain task. The idea of self-efficacy is relatively new in the field of education, but has gained great popularity over the past few decades. Educators suggest that novice teachers

need to possess a clear and positive image of themselves as teachers (self-efficacy) before growth can occur. Without a clear self-image (high self-efficacy) novices are certain to fail miserably in the classroom. Beginning teachers need strong self-efficacy beliefs in order to continue in the field of education . Teachers who exhibit high levels of self-efficacy are also more satisfied with their job and more empowered. Thus, self-efficacy is directly related to teacher success in the classroom. Self-efficacy is often divided into two categories: general teaching efficacy and personal teaching efficacy. General teaching efficacy refers to the beliefs held by a teacher concerning the power that external factors, such as home environment, violence, or abuse, have in comparison to the influences that teachers and schools have on students. Classroom management has been a historical problem for teachers. Since the early 1930’s, teachers have reported that classroom management and student misbehavior were the two most trying issues for new and, sometimes, even experienced teachers . (Johnston, 1978; Williams, 1976). Although society and the educational system have undergone monumental transformations since that time, classroom management still remains as the

Classroom management refers to a teacher’s ability to keep order in the classroom, engage students in learning, and elicit student cooperation, all while balancing the menial tasks of the classroom. Research shows that “students spend up to one-half of instructional time engaged in tasks not related to learning, such as classroom procedural matters, transitions between activities, discipline situations, and off task activities (Codding & Smyth, 2008). Teaching today is a very stressful profession. The levels of stress experienced by teachers undoubtedly have a strong effect on teacher performance, career decisions, physical and mental health, and overall job satisfaction. Classroom management requires the development and honing of skills and strategies to produce a safe and orderly learning environment. It is different for every teacher, every classroom, and every situation, and could possibly be the most complex aspect of teaching. Classroom management relies heavily on planning, establishing, and maintaining routines and procedures, and enforcing rules with consequences.. One of the most influential factors affecting classroom management is experience. Although surveys generally indicate that teachers with more years of experience perceive fewer problems regarding classroom management, instead of implying that teachers learn to manage classroom over time, these surveys could be evidence that teachers that did not learn to properly manage classrooms and have left the profession. Classroom management is the foundation for learning. Without proper classroom management, students cannot and will not learn. It plays a very important role in the classroom, despite the fact that it is often not given the respectful consideration that it is due. Classroom management is an important indicator to administration of the successfulness of a teacher. Regardless of how knowledgeable and skilled a teacher is at his or her career, a lack of classroom management will often counteract the prevalence of such skills.

The impact of a natural disaster may also cause inequalities. The poor, who suffer from the aftermath of calamities are helpless when their children refuse to go

to school because they are shy they have no clothes and baon. Pupil development thus, is hampered, aside from suffering shock and emotional trauma. In addition, there are a number of non-poor, or close to be, who are not insured from those risks, and then may fall into poverty as consequence when coping with the shock. The emotional vulnerability of a student to natural disasters is a complex issue. When calamities occur, parents are unable to provide food, adequate shelter or proper utilities at home. They are hungry, tired unable to focus in school, as their basic needs are not met. While, students whose primary needs are fulfilled arrive at school feeling safe and ready to learn, they may also be affected by calamities which rendered their school with no clean classrooms and toilets. They may find such an atmosphere discomforting. Other schools can provide not only safe and well-structured buildings, but also recent textbooks and modern technology. Life experiences shape a student’s attitude toward education. Student who enjoy exploring and experimenting seek to further their educations. Calamities may also render them illness, and they may miss schooling and fall behind in their development. They will not learn in the same way as other children in the class. Calamities lead to living in poor housing and they may not sleep well, due to over-crowding or noises in evacuation centers, and this will make them tired in school, affecting concentration. Poor housing can affect health. After typhoons, homes become damp and students get breathing problems for example. Then they miss schooling due to poor health. In Cagayan De Oro City, some 30 individuals from Iligan City and Cagayan De Oro City jumped off early Tuesday morning starting in the designated Sendong “zero ground” at the Rotunda Circle here. He said that other participants from Davao, Surigao, and Zamboanga – all victims of the disastrous Typhoons Sendong and Pablo – have also started the more than 550 kilometer trek to Tacloban City. “The participants from Mindanao intend to be in Tacloban City a day before

Sayyaf shows video clip on social site of German ransom Z AMBOANGA City – The Abu Sayyaf has posted a video clip on Facebook showing militants stacking up ransoms it got in exchange for the safe release of two German hostages in southern Philippines. The post had been taken down and the Facebook account deactivated after the video went viral in social media. The clip showed militants, some of them barefooted, surrounding the ransoms all P1000 bill - wrapped in transparent plastic sheet and stacked in bundles of five, and is estimated to be worth P160 million. Abu Sayyaf spokesman, Aboo Rami, told Radio Mindanao Network in Zamboanga City, that they freed the two German yachters - Stefan Viktor Okonek, 71, and Henrike Diesen, 55 – on October 17 after receiving the ransom.

The Abu Sayyaf demanded P250 million ransoms from Germany in exchange for the freedom of the hostages. The Philippine military has strongly insisted that no ransom was paid for the release of two German nationals and even dared anybody to come up with evidence that ransom had been paid to Abu Sayyaf militants in Sulu province. Lt. Col. Harold Cabunoc, a military spokesman, insisted the foreigners were freed by their kidnappers due to pressure exerted by security forces – a line which the military have used many times in previous release of foreign hostages by the Abu Sayyaf. Sources in Sulu said a private jet delivered 12 trolley bags containing ransoms in Jolo and that several bags full of money had been left in the plane. Cabunoc branded the Abu Sayyaf statement as “propagan-

irst birthdays are always a time for thanksgiving since the child has successfully reached a milestone. It’s the debut year of your kid and he or she can remember it in videos and pictures years afterwards. It is also a celebration of parenthood. Because of this premise that it is a once-in-alifetime affair, Diamond Merzel “DM” Sudaria-Lipanta celebrated her birthday in a memorable way – although she has not known it yet, she reached out to less privileged kids at Calaanan Development Center last November 3 by giving them games, perks, food and vitamins. The kids at Calaanan – who are all

children of Sendong survivors – enjoyed themselves to a sack race and other parlor games where they were treated with candy afterwards followed by burger and juice treats during sunset at the spacious open area in their community located in barangay Canitoan. The kids were assisted by a church-based youth group in Calaanan as well as the growing UNO chapter in Cagayan de Oro, which is headed by Diamond Merzel’s mom Mer. Or else that dream will just remain a day dream. I entered the world of sales at 12 and sold many things; from toilet paper, pants, shoes, shirts, watches and many others. This is what I’ve discovered, you will experience a lot of rejections and trial before you succeed. But as the going gets tough, I became tougher, stronger and more resilient to do whatever it takes to reach my dreams. I thank God that I was rewarded to fulfill my dreams before I hit the age of 27. This is now what I’ve realized, the only difference between people who make it or not their determination to fulfill it. The question need to be asked is “Are you willing to pay the price?” Because every dream comes a price tag. The bigger the dream, the bigger the price tag.

No dream will be handed to you over a silver platter. As the old saying goes, “There is no such thing as free lunch.” The wrong question to ask is “Do you have a dream?” Rather, “Are you willing to do everything, no matter how long it may take, in order to make your dream to become a reality?” In pursuing your dreams you will encounter challenges, difficulties and tribulations of many kinds. Are you willing to succeed as much as you want to breath air? Many people want to succeed but not all want it that bad. You must want it! You must covet it! You must go for it! Many want to succeed, but some people sleep more than they are awake. If you want to succeed, you cannot afford to go to sleep. Many want to succeed, but some people are just too lazy to work. If you want to succeed, you cannot afford to be lazy. Many want to succeed, but some people are just too afraid to get started. If you want to succeed, you cannot afford to be scared. Successful people can hardly sleep; they are hardworking; they are courageous to face all types of challenges and fear that may come along the way. They are thinking about what they are going to do tomorrow. They wake up in the middle of the night to plan more, to think more. They cannot wait until it is tomorrow in order to execute and make their plans work. They live, breath, think about their dreams every minute and every second of the day. You must want you dream so bad that you cannot afford to allow one day passing without you doing something about it. If you know that you have been putting off your dreams for the longest time. My challenge to you is, what are you planning to do about it?

Do you want to wait a few more years to pass for you to realize that you are not getting any younger? Introducing teachers to Google Apps FOR this edition of The Chameleon, we have a guest contribution from Ms. Roxanne Fuentes. She’s a teacher in a private school and at the same time the head of the Google Educators Group – Cagayan de Oro. Making Work Faster and Easier Through GAFE’s collaborative platform, students and teachers simply log into their Gmail account to gain access to the all the Google apps, extensions and addons. rom Greenhills to Divine, from Leo’s Grill to Haze, from Illest to Centrio, it was a Halloween craze all over Cagayan de Oro last weekend. I did what any other human would do – to stay at one party and opt to enjoy the rest of the night there. Specifically, I trooped to Junno DeliCafe. Others wanted to be teleport and this they almost did – from Haze, model-slash-beauty queen-slashCity Hall employee-slash-partygoer Jasmin Borja sped to Lifestyle District in her trademark Maleficient look; DJ RB Banaag switched from Junno to Haze; Bingo Ebabacol from Haze to Leo’s (or was it the other way around? haha). I entered Junno along with lady chum Kat Llagas at around 10 p.m. and the place was packed already with revelers in their crazy costumes. Also seen were newly married ex-seminarian Churchill Aguilar as well as Kiwanis dolls Claire Marte, Cyrielle Bucais and Ritz Anne Beja, among many others. Food and booze were flowing but not free…lol! As we were partying there the whole time, I was personally pondering on how the rest of the Halloween parties in the city fared. If only you could borrow Atoy Martinez’s drone and insert an infrared chip inside to see what’s going on at LED… at Lokal…at Pulse…at CDO Bar all at the same time, I’m sure that would be quite a spectacle. While the rest of the adults were still beating work deadlines, the kids had their early start. By Friday afternoon, malls such as Gaisano, Super KEI, Centrio, SM City Cagayan de Oro and Ororama were already handing out treats to kids. Then the barrage of parties started to descend, kicking off with a firedance performance at Lokal. Then sunset came. It was a time for longboarders in Halloween costumes to boast their talents and roved around the city in their skates and bikes, kicking off and ending at Rodelsa Circle.
