THE business community in the region has acknowledged the outcome of the 2014 Mindanao Business Leaders Awards, which gave recognition to 15 businesses/ entrepreneurs, Saturday, July 26, at the Ayala Centrio Mall, under the auspices of the BusinessWeek Mindanao (BWM) Group of Publications. Oro Chamber President Efren Uy said he is both honored and flattered to see the attendance Saturday night of businessmen at the event, even as he said that the Oro Chamber is “so much glad” to be part of the event. “Businessmen in the region are gathered this (Saturday) evening to witness this significant occasion. The 2014 Mindanao Business Leaders Awards has recognized our businessmen and business leaders who chose to invest here in our area and believed in the capability of Mindanao to

The awardees have been recognized for their efforts in improving Mindanao and have been appreciated with simple yet self-fulfilling award, he said. “We all know that a simple medal, trophy or plaque cannot compensate all the challenges, hardships and risks that we have faced in the business world. But, it can somehow gratify us and will give us a sense of triumph and, indeed, can

make us proud of ourselves. You will be a model and a leader not only to our cobusinessmen, but to those who want to engage and start their own business, as well,” Uy said. Uy extended his sincere appreciation and congratulation to the awardees and to all those who were present at the awarding rites. “I know, we have our own little steps in lifting up our own Mindanao business industry. However, I’m telling you not to rest on your glories, but to continue to strive towards even loftier goals,” Uy said. Gregory Cayetano said that “with or without SONA,” the rebels are going to “ intensif y moves” in the aftermath of the “Prosperidad botched attack” on July 15, not discounting the possibility of re s or t i ng to “te r ror activities.” Also, Cayetano admitted to seeing the usual horde of people going to the streets to

stage rallies on that SONA schedule which the rebel groups might infiltrate. However, the brigade commander assured that “preemptive moves” are always in place. Aquino’s SONA to emphasize Mindanao economy and stability By Cris Diaz, Executive Editor

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY - - P re s i d e nt B e n i g n o Aquino III would likely emphasize the economic development and stability of peace and order of Mindanao during his State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday. Rep. Rufus B. Rodriguez, of Cagayan De Oro City, said on Friday that economic development and the stability of the peace and order in Mindanao would be the focus of Aquino’s remaining two years in office. He said that the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL), considered as the landmark achievement of the Aquino administration, would bring lasting peace in Mindanao. “Once the BBL is approved in Congress, peace and economic stability in Mindanao follows,” Rodriguez said. In Cagayan De Oro City, the Cagayanons have expressed the optimism that the Aquino administration would commit in the construction of the P 2.5 billion Skyway that would become a landmark of economic development in Northern Mindanao, Rodriguez said. He said that the construction of another project, the P 2.5 billion diversion road toward the Laguind-

ingan Airport in Misamis Oriental will certainly boost and unprecedented economic boom in the region. Rodriguez also lauded the first four-year of the Aquino administration as one that went down in the annals of the economic development in Southeast Asia. “The Philippines attained a 7.2 gross national product (GNP) growth in 2013, one of the highest economic growths in Asia, next only to China,” he said. The unprecedented economic growth has boosted international confidence that the Moody Ratings (one of the world’s Big Three Credit Rating agencies) has posted a positive outlook on the Philippine economy, Rodriguez said. Considered as one of the rising economic tigers in Asia, Europe has, once again, opened its skies to the Philippine airline companies that would certainly set off foreign investment opportunities in the country. NPA says suspects in B’non mayor’s slay fall guys MALAYBALAY CITY -The New People’s Army on Friday said the police have filed “trumped-up charges” against three suspects in the killing of Mayor Mario Okinlay of Impasugong, Bukidnon. In a statement sent by Ariel Inda Magbanuag, spokesperson of the NPA South Central Bukidnon Command, the rebel group identified the suspects as brothers Joven and Efren

Yanggo and Ryan Daluniag. “Instead of conducting a thorough investigation, the Regional Task GroupOkinlay headed by CIDG regional director P/Sr. Superintendent Pedro Austria, merely relied on guesswork and randomly pointed their fingers at the first likely scapegoats. After only two days of investigation, they effortlessly filed charges against the three,” the statement said.

“The AFP and PNP know that they have no genuine witnesses to prove their accusations. But they will not hesitate to make scapegoats out of civilians to fool the public into believing that they have not been idle in cases like this. In doing so, they are soiling their own image and alienating themselves all the more from the people,” it added. Okinlay was ambushed last July 2 on his way home

from a visit to Barangay Bontongon, Impasugong. The NPA had admitted responsibility for his death. How we end up with a Tanda, a Pogi, a Sexy… and Plunder! CAGAYAN de Oro City––If we continue to keep the government of our community on auto-pilot, leaving its affairs to chance or to self-styled caretakers, it will remain wayward and controlled by the latter. That’s what we have been doing since 1991 when the law made our barangay a full-fledged government, a public corporation, and an economy in its own right. We ceded our right and duty to run it as a direct democracy with a parliamentary form. As a result, traditional politicians, trapos, who are always happy to fill the vacuum of good governance, rushed in and replaced it with—what else?–bad, corrupt governance which makes a lousy foundation for a Republic! Bad governance is the price we pay for ceding the governing process to others who purport to be public servants but are in fact exploiters of the public. They’ll call you “Boss” but run things anyway they like, just like badly-motivated household servants without supervision; they’ll eat you out of room and board! ***** Without transparency, accountability, and effective citizen participation, it’s in the nature of government to go astray. Its officials are human and corruptible— and how! If so inclined or tempted, they’ll take liberties with the power and resources delegated to them. They’ll turn democracy into an oligarchy, indulge their penchant for dynastybuilding, reserve govern-

ment posts for takeover by relatives and cronies—doing all of this at public expense. It’s what’s happening at the primary level of government; we allow the barangay officials to behave as if they have unlimited power of attorney and a blank check to do with as they please. Naturally they take advantage and use the power and the money to turn the impressionable sectors of the community into a fan club for the likes of a Tanda, a Pogi, or a Sexy. ***** What most people don’t realize is that the big bosses in the capitals can’t get anywhere without the local trapos. It’s the latter who manipulate the votes of our community to elect the high officials on all levels. That’s why we have actors, even a stuntman, swashbuckling coup plotters, and other unsuitable characters in Congress. And that’s why sensible people should participate in the governing process of their community, to share their perspectives, and influence neighbors to be rational in their selection

criteria, especially those who prove too malleable and readily manipulated by big trapos who command the loyalty of local officials. It is they who make it possible for trapo-endorsed and funded candidates, regardless of background or competence, to win the community’s votes. Grand Iftar in Recodo initiated

AMBOANGA CITY - Mayor Beng Climaco joined Muslim worshippers in Recodo and the neighboring barangays to break the Ramadan fast as part of the city government-initiated grand Iftar. Accompanied by Vice Mayor Cesar Iturralde, members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod and Zamboanga City Inter-faith Council, department heads and other guests from various offices, organizations and institutions, Mayor Climaco spent time with members of the Recodo community breaking fast at sunset. Visibly present were representatives from the humanitarian organizations—people who are in the forefront of the Zamboanga response. Prominent Muslim religious leaders present were Deputy Mufti for Region 9- Sheik Abdulwakil Tanjili, Sheik Khadraji “Guru Bata” Tapsi- Sabiel Al Muhtadeen Ameer and Sheik Mahir Gustaham. The chief executive underscored the importance of unity and solidarity among different faiths. She told the Muslim residents that she

values the Muslim-Christian coexistence in the city. “I want you to know that we value our co-existence. Let us pray for peace, unity and understanding as we approach the Eid’l Fitri celebration.” Recodo chairman Wahab Ibba thanked Mayor Climaco for choosing his barangay as the site of the grand Iftar and for bringing along visitors and guests from different faiths and different countries to break the fast with members of the community. Gustaham explained in brief the meaning and objectives of Ramadan which means abstinence from eating, drinking and sexual activities from dawn to dusk. He said it is the goals of Ramadan to develop self-constraint and God awareness. “We can achieve self-control when fasting and we can achieve self-discipline and of course accountability and aware-

BASILAN PROVINCE Two government militias and three Abu Sayyaf militant were killed in fierce fighting in the restive province of Basilan in the Muslim autonomous region in Mindanao, officials said. Officials said the fighting erupted in the village of Sungkayot in Ungkaya Pukan on Thursday fol-

lowing a militar y operation that targeted Abu Sayyaf militant Sulayman Ajanti, who was killed in the clashes. Two other militants Botong Aliman and Madie Umangkat were also slain in the fighting. Two automatic rifles were also recovered by troops from the slain militants.

Two government militias – Adzmin Hasalal and Ummal Kulok - were also wounded in the fighting that left two of their relatives Damman Hasalal and Jakaria Kulok, who were militias, dead. No other details were made available by the Philippine Army in Basilan province and the Western Mindanao Command in Zamboanga City on the clashes or the progress of the military operations against the Abu Sayyaf. Teachers to wear black armbands vs. corruption, low pay

AGUM CITY – Teachers across the country mounted a protest action today dubbed as “Black armband Friday” to demand increase in their salary and to condemn President Benigno Aquino III’s “arrogant defense” of his controversial use of government savings called Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP). Teachers are expected to display the black arm bands every Friday henceforth until the demands are met, according to the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) which organized the protest action. The ACT said the Friday moverment “is meant to

symbolize the continuing utter neglect of the Aquino government despite their strong appeal over issues of low salary and meager benefits”. ACT, the biggest sectoral party of public school teachers in the country, wants the immediate pas-

sage of House Bill 245 to increase the entry level of public school teachers from P18,549 to P25,000 and for the non-teaching personnel from P9,000 to P15,000 per month. Smart opens Jump In Dance Off 2 season with simultaneous dance celebrations

xplosive dance battles in simultaneous celebrations in Makati, Cebu and Davao aptly kicked off this year’s Jump In Dance Off contest, the largest interschool dance competition in the country. Hundreds joined the dance parties put together by Smart Prepaid at the Black Market in Makati City, Barcode in Cebu City and Acropolis Superclub in Davao City, which featured adrenaline-charged numbers by the Polytechnic University of the Philippines’ Power Impact Dancers, University of Cebu Main Dance Troupe and street dancers from the University of South Eastern Philippines, respectively. The crews’ heart-stopping routines, followed by breathtaking dance showdowns, gave everyone a preview of the upcoming competition, which offers over P4 million worth of prizes to the nation’s best dance groups in the elementary, high school and college levels. The event also gave everyone a chance to move to the latest party beats whipped up by MC Paolo and DJ Ace Ramos in Makati, MC Benson in Cebu and MC Wacky and Brylle Aguirre in Davao. “Smart Prepaid has always been a big ally of the youth in pursuing their passions. A 20-kilo hawksbill turtle that found its way to the seashore premises of the Mindanao Power Plant of Steag State Power at Villanueva, Misamis Oriental, has been released back to the sea by workers of the energy firm. Marine biologists from the Protected Areas and Wildlife Division of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources measured the length of the turtle at almost one meter long. Dad: Spitting, urinating in public places unlawful

COUNCILOR Dante Pajo, chair of the City Council committee on health and sanitation, reminds everyone that urinating and spitting in any sidewalk, pathways, park, plaza and other public places in Cagayan de Oro City is strictly prohibited. He said Section 548 of the Ordinance No. 4373-94, known as the City Codified Ordinance provides that it is unlawful for any person to urinate, defecate and spit in public places. A penalty of not less than P500 is provided under the law, Pajo added. “Complying with the law will also help maintain clean surroundings.
