More victims of human trafficking recorded in Surigao

By Joel Escol, Contributing Editor

As president-elect Rodrigo Duterte is about to seat as the 16th president of the country, 3 suspected couriers and peddlers of prohibited drugs were ambushed yesterday. Luckily, 1 cheated death and is now recuperating at the provincial hospital in Cagayan de Oro. Police investigators in Tagoloan town identified the three victims as Roel Lozano, George Ranara and Eric Dauz. Lozano and Ranara died on the spot when motorcycle-riding attackers peppered them with bullets while also onboard a motorcycle. Luckily, Eric Dauz survived the ambush and he was immediately brought at the provincial hospital for treatment. Lozano was a resident of Barangay 22 in Cagayan de Oro City while two of his companions’ dwelling places are still unknown at press time. Police investigators in Tagoloan Police Station are still facing a blank wall as to the motive of the slaying. They are still tracking the whereabouts of

OFWs pushes for veteran Pinoy journalist to Saudi envoy post By CHRIS V. PANGANIBAN

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia— Diehard supporters of President-elect Rodrigo Duterte here are actively pushing for the endorsement of a veteran Filipino journalist Dr. Abdul Hannan Tago to be the next Philippine Ambassador to this oil-rich country. Most of Dr. Tago’s supporters in his bid to the top diplomatic post in Saudi Arabia are Filipino Muslim community groups who campaigned hard for

Duterte during the last elections on May 9 in this large Middle East country of 1.3 million Overseas Filipino Workers. Spearheading his endorsement are Mayor Rodrigo Roa Duterte-National Executive Coordinating Committee (MRRD-NECC) Saudi Arabia Chapter and PDP Laban Duterte Middle East Movement. Tago is a journalist who worked as senior reporter for more than 30 years to Arab News, the leading English daily in Saudi Arabia.

Other community groups who signified their support are the anti-crime group Guardians Republicans International, AMTAR Tugaya International Foundation, the Anti-Crime and Terrorism through Community Involvement and Support Saudi Arabia Chapter, women’s group Gabriela chapter in the Middle East and Filipino Expatriates Council for Justice, Peace and Order. According to Jehad Zacaria Pangcoga, secretary of See ENVOY, page A11

SURIGAO City--More victims of human trafficking have been recorded here in the first two quarters of 2016, most of them shipped out from Pantalan 1 and 2 here, a non-governmental organization said. The Visayan Forum Foundation, Inc.(VFFI) said they have recorded 227 victims, 63 of them female minors, in the first half of this year. Last year, the VFFI recorded 164 victims, 89 of them women and children. The year 2008 saw a record of 225, it said. Philippine Ports Authority-Port Police Superintendent Froilan Caturla said illegal recruiters and their victims loosely take motorized bancas at the Pantalan going to Southern Leyte towns of Pintuyan, San Ricardo and Liloan. We don’t have jurisdiction over these areas unlike the base port and the port of Lipata,” Caturla told MindaNews. He said the local government should do something about the situation as it has already reached an alarming level. See victims, page A11
