CAGAYAN de Oro City -A three (3 ) year old child died in a fire that razed a compound in Sitio Zayas, Barangay Carmen this City. The child identified as Nissan Dave Cabigquis was trapped in a room of their house when his father Roger was rushing out to call for neighbor’s help. He was the lone casualty of the fire incident. The fire which occurred at around 3 a.m. yesterday, gutted some 22 houses in

the said compound. According to City Fire Inspector Arnold Lagbas of the Bureau of Fire Protection in Northern Mindanao, the fire took place at the Cabigquis Compund. It reportedly started at the house of Roger Cabigquis, the father of Nissan Dave. Three other persons were also injured in the fire incident. They were identified as Angelica Tanusan who sustained 1st degree burns; Rudy Gastahon with 2nd degree burns; and Roger Cabigquiz a.k.a “Dodong See fire, page A11

DA-XI offers assistance for Fusarium-infested banana farms By MICHAEL L UY

DAVAO DEL NORTE -- The Department of Agriculture (DA) XI bared yesterday at Big8 Corporate Hotel, Tagum City that specials programs are being offered for Fusarium-infested banana plantation. DA-XI Supervising Agriculturist and Fusarium Focal Person Herna Palma disclosed during the Knowledge Sharing Workshop on Intensified Communications Campaign on Management and Control of Banana Fusarium Will in Davao Region that the department employed four interventions to help out banana farmers to recover from Fusarium infestation. The identified programs were Cash for Work Program for Eradication, planting of Fusarium resistant variety or GCTCV 219, crop shifting program and Trichoderma distribution. Palma emphasized that the farmers may wish to apply to any of the following programs provided that they will meet the requirements, which will be evaluated by their technical persons or plant pathologists. She said that farmlands with 5% or below infestation per area planted may avail the cash for work program

amounting to P500 per mat as incentive for the eradication. “For those who have areas that have 5% or below infestation per hectare, they may avail 10 packs of Trichoderma per mat of Fusarium infected banana but the farmer can only get a maximum of 1,000 packs,” she added. Palma also encouraged farmers to plant Fusarium resistant banana variety, which is the Giant Cavendish Tissue Culture Variant (GCTCV) 219. According to the DA program, a farmer may get 1,500 pieces of GCTCV 219 variety provided they will apply the appropriate technology and fertilized for their planting. “The farmer may also opt to shift from other crops like Cacao, Coffee, Corn, Cassava and assorted vegetables,” she said. DA-XI Information Officer Noel Provido said that farmers, who wish to avail of the said programs, will have to approach their respective local agriculture office. AVAO CITY – There is no sacred cow in Davao. No less than the prime mover and organizer of a group pushing for the presidential bid of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte was arrested for smoking in a nondesignated smoking area Saturday evening. Jimmy Cabrera himself playfully posted the arrest of his photo on his Facebook page showing the responding policeman writing down the violation. In the photo, an obviously amused Cabrera s m i l e d at t he c ame r a while two other onlookers smiled approvingly. The photo, first posted from the FB account of one Boy Viet Cong, carried the title “DDS – Disciplined Davaoeno Smokers”. This project was made with the purchase of brand new equipment found to be nonoperational.” “Up to the present, the brand new centralized air conditioning system that the (same contractor) supplied and installed nine years ago (are) still brand new but non-operational,” Joson also declared. CAGAYAN de Oro City--A senior official of the National Youth Commission (NYC) disclosed that bandits in the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (Armm) are recruiting socalled child warriors by offering their parents huge amount of money. Speaking in an engagement with Cagayan de Oro youth leaders Monday, NYC Commissioner for Mindanao Earl Saavedra, said that not even the ballooning scholarships offered by the Commission on Higher Education (Ched) could counter the offers made by the bandits. Saavedra did not name any specific armed group in his remarks. In 2013 when the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) of senators and congressmen were scrapped in favor of the various Cabinet departments, Ched scholarships nationwide increased to P1.05 billion. Each private college

student-scholar would receive P15,000 per semester while students from state colleges and universities would get P7,000 each in book allowance. But this is a far cry from what bandits are offering in Armm, Saavedra claimed. He revealed that bandits would convince parents to send in their kids as child warriors. In return, the family would be given on the spot P100,000 in cash, two firearms and an offer to pay the dowry if the child warrior decides to take a bride of his choice and marry. “The phenomenal increase in Ched scholarships is also felt in Armm. But ha-

EVERY day from 12:00 noon till around five, more than a dozen homeless kids in Divisoria stop playing for a while and troop to a nondescript building in Yacapin-Burgos. The reason? They’ll be studying there using the Alternative Learning System (ALS) of the Department of Education (DepEd). For two years now, two licensed teachers have been tapped by Kids International Ministries to teach ALS to the street children aged five to 17. But first, the kids sit down for

lunch, take a shower and play. Then the ALS curriculum begins. Then they can play again afterwards. In a city still inspired by the street-orphan-turnedAteneo-graduate of now 25-year-old Rustie Quintana, the existence of the drop-in center at YacapinBurgos offers a glimmer of hope for the street kids. But Natalie Stephens, director of the center aptly called Kahayag nga Dalan, felt that is not enough. “At the end of the day, they are still in the streets.

They should be rehabilitated so they can be reunited their families,” the American missionary said in an exclusive interview. On March 2 this year, Kids in International Ministries broke ground on the future location of the rehab center in barangay Balubal. Four houses and one multi-purpose building will be constructed at the site. The construction is at a snail’s pace though. “We need more funding for our construction. If Cagayan de Oro can afford to build huge shopping malls, why can’t we invest in the education of our homeless kids,” Stephens asked. Construction materials such as GI sheets, nails and plywood and the wages of the workers are being trickled in by the benefactors of Kids International Ministries which established itself in the country in 2013. But that is not enough. That is why Stephens is appealing to kind-hearted Northern Mindanaoans to help chip in for their project since according to her, it would help make homeless children into productive citizens in the future and not as potential criminals.

“This is for our own city here. This is for our own society,” she remarked. “This is for you and the kids!” One strategy that Kids in International Ministries will be doing is to “rehabilitate” the parents of the street children, too. “We will invite the parents and teach them how to start their own livelihood like crafts making. In that way, they may be reunited with their family,” Stephens said. For Stephens and the rest of the kids at Kahayag nga

WHO told: 466 MERSCOV deaths, 1,321 laboratory-confirmed cases B

UTUAN CITY – In a statement published by the World Health Organization dated June 16, there have been 154 confirmed cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome-Corona Virus (including one confirmed case in China) reported in the Republic of Korea so far with with 19 deaths.

Globally, since September 2012, WHO has been notified of 1,321 laboratoryconfirmed cases with MERSCoV infection including at least 466 related deaths. In the wake of these developments, Department of Health (DOH) has reiterated its call to observe hygiene measures such as regular hand washing with soap and water, practicing proper cough manners and using

hand sanitizers in order to prevent MERSCoV. In a press release, the DOH said the Bureau of Quarantine is closely monitoring all points of entry in the Philippines to ensure the surveillance of all incoming travelers from different countries. They are calling on all incoming passengers to honestly fill out the health declaration checklist (yellow form) as an initial yet

significant participation to prevent MERSCoV in entering the country. The World Health Organization does not recommend the imposition of any travel, trade, or screening restrictions to MERSCoV. The virus does not appear to pass easily from person-toperson unless there is close contact with an infection person or provided unprotected care to an infection person. Transmission of the virus has occurred mostly in health care facilities. However, the DOH advised that travelers, whether tourists or migrant workers, should maintain a high level of vigilance, especially those coming from MERSCoVinfected countries. In a recent meeting with representatives of private hospitals to update/inform

them of the government preparations and response to MERSCoV, Health Secretary Janette Loreto-Garin highlighted the importance of thorough history-taking and immediate reporting

Scientists discover more than 100 new marine species in PH Scientists from the California Academy of Sciences are celebrating World Ocean’s Day with a slew of brand new marine discoveries—more than 100 species that are likely new to science. The Philippines is home to the most biologically diverse waters on Earth, and remains the centerpiece of the Academy’s multi-year exploration of the Coral Triangle’s biological treasures. Over the course of this seven-week undertaking, funded by the National Science Foundation, scientists collected countless marine specimens, including rare and new species of colorful sea slugs, barnacles, and delicate heart urchins— among several others—to be studied in the coming months. Mysterious live animals from dimly-lit, deep-water reefs were also collected for a new exhibit at the Academy’s Steinhart Aquarium, expected to open in the summer of 2016. “The Philippines is jampacked with diverse and threatened species—it’s one of the most astounding regions of biodiversity on Earth,” said Terry Gosliner, PhD, Senior Curator of Invertebrate Zoology at the California Academy of Sciences and a Principal Investigator of the expedition. “Despite this richness, the region’s biodiversity has been relatively unknown,”

said Gosliner, adding, “the species lists and distribution maps that we’ve created during our years surveying the country’s land and sea will help to inform future conservation decisions and ensure that this incredible biodiversity is afforded the best possible chance of survival.” The Academy’s 2015 expedition to the Philippines zeroed in on the Verde Island Passage—the veritable treasure trove of marine life nestled between the Philippine islands of Luzon to the north and Mindoro to the south. While previous expeditions (in 2011 and 2014) explored life in the western and northern portions of this narrow passage, the most recent trip took researchers to lesser-known field sites at its southern end. Scientists surveying the region’s diversity snorkeled in sandy shallows, scanned steep, clear-water reefs, and dove to unimaginable depths—150 to 500 feet beneath the ocean’s surface—in deep-water “twilight zone” regions never before seen by human eyes. Extensive fieldwork yielded thrilling results; the 2015 research sites appeared every bit as diverse as previous expedition visits to distant Passage regions. like a beacon” for sea slug experts on the lookout for new species. This spring, Gosliner and a team of marine invertebrate researchers discovered more than 40 new varieties of nudibranchs—vibrant sea slugs made famous by their poisonous adaptations and importance to biomedical research. Many of these discoveries were made in one notable research site near the Philippine harbor of Puerto Galera. “This remarkable stretch of coral rubble was carpeted in colorful nudibranchs,” said Gosliner, who reported that most slugs he encountered appeared entirely new to science. “It was like an

underwater Easter egg hunt. It was one of the most exciting scientific dives of my 50-year career.” Scientists were pleased to find live specimens of a nudibranch—Chelidonura alexisi—initially discovered during the Academy’s 2011 expedition. Gosliner based his nearlypublished species description on examinations of a deceased specimen, and the live, speckled nudibranchs provided valuable additions to the official species description. “I was able to submit new details about Chelidonura alexisi—what it looks like, how it lays eggs, and how it varies within its species—

literally two weeks before the study came out,” said Gosliner. “It’s thrilling to return to such an incredibly diverse region year after year. Whether we’re finding new species or adding to our understanding of previously known creatures and habitats, these expeditions help us pinpoint how and where to focus protection efforts.” New heart urchin ‘a living fossil’ Rich Mooi, PhD, Academy Curator of Invertebrate Zoology and Geology, knew that the Philippines is an “incredibly special place” for sea urchin research, but admitted to a moment of pure astonishment during the recent expedition. “In 2014, we found the internal skeleton for a lovely new species of heart urchin, about the size of balled-up fist,” said Mooi. “I remember saying, ‘I haven’t the slightest idea what this is!’ This spring, we found several more deceased specimens, but lost hope that we’d find a living urchin with all its appendages and spines. I thought we’d never know what this cool beast actually looked like.” As the expedition approached its final weeks, Will Love, Academy Dive Officer, came to the rescue with a live specimen from 70 feet below the ocean’s surface off Puerto Galera. Mooi marveled at the heart urchin’s pinkish-white spines, “like silk, or fine hairs.” While in the process of completing a formal species description, researchers linked the new discovery with a long-lost relative from the Prenaster gen us—a fossil species that roamed the seafloor roughly 50 million years ago. “It’s critical we fill the gaps in knowledge about the life that thrives in the

Philippines—you never know when you’re going to discover a living fossil among the corals. We want to work with folks in the Philippines and global scientific community to help sustain these unique environments for generations to come.” Academy plans Twilight Zone exhibit at Steinhart Aquarium While several members of the expedition explored “shallow” Philippine reefs-anywhere from the surface to 130 feet deep--the Academy’s highly-trained team scientific diving team plunged to the unbelievable depths to search for new species and collect live animals for an upcoming Twilight Zone aquarium exhibit. In a narrow band of mesophotic reefs, located between 150 and 500 feet deep, animals live in partial darkness, well beyond recreational diving limits yet above the deep trenches patrolled by submarines and ROVs. Reaching those extreme depths requires Academy divers to push the boundaries of both technology and the human body, using closed-circuit “rebreathers” that extend the amount of time they can spend underwater. The rate of new-species discovery in the twilight zone can top ten per hour, but scientists are typically afforded a scant 30 minutes in this light-starved region before beginning a multihour period of decompression on the way back to the surface. This year, the team focused on bringing a selection of live fishes, corals, and jelly-like creatures safely to the surface, and back to the Academy’s public aquarium located in San Francisco’s See species, page A9

Seeing these animals in-person will help the public learn more about why we need to explore and help protect the entire ocean, and not just what lives at the surface.” Twilight zone specimen highlights include 15 species of fishes as well as strange, multi-colored ctenophores, or “comb jellies” collected from a depth of 280 feet. Shepherd and Academy Curator of Ichthyology Luiz Rocha spotted these Lyrocteis imperatoris attached to abandoned fishing line via fold-like appendages near their mouths. When hungry, the animal deploys long, sticky, hairlike tentacles into the surrounding waters to reel-in plankton, turning mealtime into an impressive display. Academy biologists are studying the live comb jellies behind the scenes with hopes to give the public an up-close look when the Twilight Zone exhibit opens in the summer of 2016. Dismantling ‘parachute science’ An integral part of the Philippine expeditions remains the Academy’s commitment to collaboration—before arrival and long after

California-based scientists depart—with colleagues and conservation partners within the Philippines. This spring, as on previous expeditions, Academy scientists worked alongside more than 17 colleagues from the Philippines as well as a team of Academy educators who shared the expedition’s findings with local community members, decision-makers, and conservation groups. “The Academy doesn’t believe in ‘parachute science’ where researchers drop in, study wildlife, and leave,” said Gosliner. “The world is changing before our eyes, and we need to work alongside global communities to build lasting, effective management strategies. Our scientists move beyond discovery, and work with locals to develop plans that sustain threatened ecosystems while honoring the livelihoods of people who work and raise their families near the coastline.” Expedition discoveries will be confirmed and described in the coming months as Academy scientists use DNA sequencing and other tools from the institution’s Center for Comparative Genomics to analyze all specimens collected in the field, likely discovering even more new species in the process. Their work will be available for further study by the scientific community. Oroquieta City -- The 26th ASEAN Heritage Park declaration of the Mt. Malindang Range Natural Park in this part of Northern Mindanao is just the beginning of its recognition by national and international authorities as a site of extremely valuable biodiversity and cultural heritage. Soon, this landmark of Misamis Occidental will be the third Biosphere Reserve in the country and the whole World. Today, 651 biosphere reserves are found in 120 countries, including 15 transboundary sites. In the Philippines, first it was in 1977 that Puerto Galera was declared as biosphere reserve and second,

in 1990 Palawan Island was declared by UNESCO thru its natural sciences’ sector which developed, created and implements the Man and Biosphere Program or otherwise known as MAB in 1974. United Nation’s Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1946 declared the country as one of its member and to date, there now 195 member states committed to implement the program. Accordingly, MAB or Man and the Biosphere Program were conceived as response to the challenging question of “How can Man reconcile conservation of biodiversity and biological resources with their sustainable use?”

MAB concept of the Biosphere Reserve emerged as a tool and framework were in all stakeholders and the local government authorities to work together to respond to this challenges. Biosphere Reserves are designated if a place possesses high levels of biodiversity and demonstrated high potential balancing biodiversity conservation, economic development, and preserving cultural values. MERS-Cov is a deadly viral respiratory illness first reported in Saudi Arabia in April 2012. Transmission of the virus is via airborne droplets when coughing or sneezing. The incubation period is 10 to 14 days. The DOH has issued some preventive measures such as frequent hand washing, proper cough manners, and avoiding contact with those with a history of travel to and from the affected countries. Canadian-based Cagayanon releases fiction novel about Nazareth I

T’s heartwarming to watch movies set in Cagayan de Oro setting with characters speaking in conversational Cebuano, our native dialect. Cloyd Winstanley did that with HD. But it’s seldom to see a fiction novel set in Cagayan de Oro. Annie Gorra, an erstwhile TV journalist from CDO who migrated to Canada in 1989, did that bold move. She released on Amazon. com a 200-page novel about her neighborhood, the iconic 17th St. of Nazareth. Titled aptly as The Witch on 17th Street, the fantasy book takes an eternal perspective of the ordinary lives of the people of that street. “The ordinary is not ordinary when seen through the eyes of eternity,” as Annie would put it. “It is a celebration of God’s beauty, childhood and neighborhood. It is narrated by a young child named Agustin.”

The following is the complete synopsis: “I remember playing under the moonlight and under the heat of the sun with marbles or rubber bands, catching grasshoppers and climbing trees. Dogs barked and hens cackled, and in the gardens grew an abundance of fruits and vegetables, spices and herbs. Creation unfolded and we smelled her symphony of scents--the sharp, tangy, soft, gentle, oily, bitter and sweet-mingling in the tropical heat. Such was life on 17th Street, a narrow strip of thin asphalt where families were raised and lives began and ended. For Agustin and his friends, Rhuel and Noli, it was a time for play, and learning about life, beauty, and the gift of creation. But not all was simple or idyllic. The old and quarrelsome woman IyaVellit lived alone in her nipa hut under a mango tree, fascinated by the moon. Everyone said

she was a witch until a stranger’s arrival began unraveling her secret.”

Released only on April 17 this year, it already made rave reviews even

from people unfamiliar with Cagayan de Oro City. Here’s one who uses the handle GeorgeV: “Annie is an amazing storyteller. Her book made me look back on my lazy days as a youth and how fun and uncomplicated things were as a youngster. Annie weaves a very humorous and interesting tale about a ‘witch’, an orphan in search of her mother, a corrupt government official and a mother and father who do their best to raise a child steeped in the right values. It’s a book that reminds you of the goodness of human beings and the inherent fairness and justice of the universe.” Here’s another one from film historian Don Van Buren of Vancouver: “The Witch on 17th Street is a novel of great warmth, humour and compassion. The richly drawn characters and their attempts to overcome adversity

through their resilience and faith help make this a thoroughly rewarding experience. A truly touching and inspiring work that I highly recommend.” So what inspired Annie to do the book? “I was inspired to write the book after hearing stories from my husband and sister about their childhood on 17th Street, Cagayan de Oro. I thought it would be wonderful to capture it especially nowadays when children tend to play more on video rather than climb trees.” What makes this novel unique is that it is our story, the story of Cagayanons and it is set locally. I don’t think any work of fiction has been set in our dear city. It combines nostalgia, humour, religion, the fight for justice, and the beauty of our place. It is our story,” she adds. IF you have gone to Louie Talents’ exhibit at Museo de Oro during the long holiday rush, then you must have said that the experience is simply mind blowing! But wait a minute, let’s retrace first and know who Louie Talents is. Louie was born in Cagayan de Oro in 1984. He spent his educational years from kindergarten to his first Bachelor’s Degree in Arts Major in Economics at Xavier University. He pursued his second bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts Major in Painting at UP Diliman with a Magna Cum Laude standing and Outstanding Thesis award in 2011. Because of this, he was the first recipient of a scholarship grant by the

French Embassy to stud one full term at the prestigious Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts de Paris. From thence, henever looked back. He has exhibited in various galleries and respected museums in the Philippines as well as exhibiting in Paris, Canada and Singapore. He is actively involved in his ﬁve art projects geared towards artistic excellence and public awareness. Louie has this to say about his Independence/Charter Day exhibit: “This multi-media solo art exhibit is my contemporary response on current events and issues in Mindanao. It touches four art projects I did in raising public awareness on children’s rights, judiciary reform, understanding foreign perspective on Mindanao and igniting a sense of involvement for the 2016 election.” Touring now through his works (caution: spoilers ahead), the ﬁrst installation would impress you already. Louie meticulously engraved his penmanship to 4,848 matchsticks and arranged them. It is his call for Filipinos to rise up and vote wisely in the 2016 elections. So why is our national hero Jose Rizal crying in his artwork? “If Jose Rizal would rise up from the grave now, I can imagine him cry his heart out of what our country has become,” he quipped. The next offering is a collaboration between Manobo kids in Bukidnon and their counterparts in Brest, France. The concept of two groups of kids separated by miles of ocean but contributing to one gigantic tableau is heartwarming in itself. The Mamasapano incident did not escape Louie’s attention either. For this particular situation, Louie gathered 21,000 toy soldiers and painstakingly glued them one by one in a tableau

that formed soldiers who are willing to sacriﬁce for the Philippine nation. Now here’s a unique one. Retrace is a collaborative artwork with Australian ballerina and dance activist Erica Rose Jeffrey. While Erica was performing a peace-themed dance, Louie was retracing all of her steps in black acrylic. The result? An amazing piece only the caliber of Louie can produce. I need not thrill you any longer. You can still visit Louie Talents’ exhibit at Xavier University’s Museo de Oro till July 15 during museum hours. Entrance is free.
