Talomo police arrest former journalist for raping own daughter DAVAO City––Elements of the Talomo police station here arrested Tuesday night former journalist Romeo O. Elusfa for allegedly raping his daughter. Supt. Julius Silagan, Talomo police chief, said the warrant against Elusfa, 49, cited that the latter raped his daughter in 2004 when she was still 13. They were reportedly living in Kidapawan City back then. Police said Elusfa did not resist arrest but showed what was supposed to be an affidavit of desistance from his daughter saying that her father was drunk when the rape took place. But Silagan said the affidavit is not yet in effect since the court has yet to act on the case. Silagan said they received the copy of the arrest warrant week. The police chief said they have already coordinated with Kidapawan police for the transfer of the suspect. As of Wednesday afternoon, Elusfa is still at the Talomo police station jail. The Regional Trial Court in Kidapawan City issued the warrant of arrest Feb-

ruary this year after prosecutors Mary Christine B. Prudenciado and Robie Ann G. Solacito found there was “probable cause” to file rape and attempted rape charges against the former journalist. The prosecutors’ joint resolution cited that the attempted rape happened sometime in April 2003 at their rented house in Kidapawan while the rape took place the following year. It quoted the victim’s statement that her father was drunk when the alleged rape happened. The prosecutors recommended a P200,000 bail bond for the attempted rape case but no bail bond for the rape case. Elusfa, who also has two sons, used to contribute stories for MindaNews and various news outfits in Manila. DAVAO City––Delegates of the 2013 International Solidarity Mission (ISM) for the survivors of typhoons “Pablo” and “Crising” and human rights violations in Paquibato District in Southern Mindanao have pooled their resources together to help the survivors who are in the process of rebuilding their communities with high hopes. The Groups sponsored humanitarian relief including basic services such as medical, dental and psychosocial services, basic infrastructure for schools and resources for sustainable agriculture projects, providing support for the most basic human needs

The Talaingod team, composed of 45 delegates, provided medical mission, psycho-social therapy for children and distribution of farm tools and seedlings in a Manobo community. The medical mission served nearly 800 individuals within 14 hours. They received free treatment and vitamins The Panansalan team, composed of 29 delegates, provided a school nursery, school farm, corn harvesting, psycho-social therapy, and launched the tree rainforestation campaign in a Mandaya Lumad community. The team said some workers have to stopped working after typhoon Pablo since the banana companies were attempting to negate their pre-Pablo pay and to push for a lower piece meal pay. FDIs, free trade boon or bane? IN this high-tech age of communications, truth manipulation is not farfetched. But such manipulation becomes a matter to be wary about when intellectual leaders of the country become victims to it. Over the years, we as a people have been made to believe that economic growth and development is hinged on foreign capital being poured into the local economy. And to assure the free flow of foreign capital into the domestic economy, we were likewise made to believe that foreign business interests should be accorded unhampered operations and be left to their own designs in dong business here. To achieve this economic objective, parity rights were granted to the citizens of the country, America, which colonized us and only forced to grant our independence in 1946 because of the worldwide clamor of colonized countries for independence. Run after those people who were involved but had retired already. They should also be prosecuted for such crime. This is the only we can put to a halt the commission of such gigantic crime. IT has been several decades that the general public learned of the so-called ghost projects in the government and until now they are still making news. The only difference is that in the present, the amount involved in the ghost projects is to the tune of billions of pesos while those of the yesteryears were somewhere by the millions. Whatever it is, this scam in the government relative to inexistent projects has truly contributed to impoverish the country. More than enough to cripple the country on its existence. THE BOOMING construction industry in Cagayan de Oro City, mostly tourism-related projects, brought in P3.44

billion worth of investments to northern Mindanao during the first quarter of this year, data from the regional office of the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) here showed. Comparatively, the influx of investments recorded is

more than double than the P1.06 billion posted by the region during the same period in 2012, or a whopping 223% increase. En gr. Cec ili o Clarete, r e g i o n a l c h i ef e c o n o m i c development specialist, at tributed the region’s per formance to the 419% increase in investments in Misamis Oriental and 602% increase in Lanao del Norte, particularly in Iligan City.

Misamis Oriental recorded P2.37 billion of investments sharing 69% of the total regional investments while Lanao del Norte posted P688 million or 20% of the total. Clarete said the increase in investments in Misamis Oriental is mostly from infrastructure and services sector which is 78.6% of the total investments in the region. Major investments in the

province include construction and expansion of tourism and business-related facilities in Cagayan de Oro such as that of Seda Hotel, Primavera Condotel, Tune Hotel, Monte Carlo Hotel and par tial development of Alberto Resort. He said most of the investments in Lanao del Norte are also classified under the infra and services sector which constitute plant expansion of Pilmico Foods Corporation

High incidence of chikungunya noted in Koronadal farm village

KORONADAL City––A farming village here has been placed under a state of calamity due to the increasing cases of suspected chikungunya disease. Cyrus Urbano, city administrator, said Thursday the barangay council of San Roque issued the calamity declaration as the number of residents who have shown symptoms of the dengue-like chikungunya already reached “almost 200.” “Our health personnel are currently in full force in the area, treating the infected residents and implementing various measures to prevent the further spread of the

disease,” he said in a radio interview. Urbano said the city health office conducted fogging operations on Wednesday within the affected communities. Barangay San Roque is located at the boundary of Koronadal City and Tampakan town, where the initial cases of the mosquito-borne chikungunya disease were detected in early June. Revival of boxing in West Visayas pushed BACOLOD CITY -- Angel Verdeflor, Western Visayas president of the Association of Boxing Alliances of the Philippines (ABAP) Inc., is urging other provinces in the region to take part in promoting or reviving interest in boxing. He said Western Visayas has a large field of potential boxers from the grassroots, but the problem is how to start discovering them. Verdeflor is expected to meet with sports coordinators in the provinces of Iloilo, Capiz, Antique and Guimaras before the year ends.
