Quake death toll climbs to 186, says NDRRMC THE National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), on its 6 a.m. Monday update, announced that the death toll for the October 15 7.2-magnitude earthquake that rocked the Central Visayas has now climbed to 186. Of the 186 fatalities, the NDRRMC identified the latest as Felipe Vigonte, a resident of Antequera town, Bohol. The NDRRMC revealed that 173 of the fatalities were from Bohol with 12 from Cebu and one was from Siquijor.
At least 583 were injured, including 489 in Bohol, 89 in Cebu, three in Siquijor, and one each in Iloilo and Negros Oriental. Eleven persons, all from Bohol, remain missing. The NDRRMC said the quake had affected 605,350 families or 3,003,001 people in 1,339 villages in 52 towns and six cities in six provinces. Of these, 22,113 families or 109,712 people are staying in 96 evacuation centers. As of Monday morning, the NDRRMC said the quake destroyed See CLIMBS/p.11

DAVAO City––This year’s barangay election in Davao del Sur will include the vote for or against the creation of a new province: Davao Occidental. Atty. Febes Barlaan, provincial election supervisor of Davao del Sur, said that “there will be a plebiscite voting in the province, either yes or no for the creation of Davao Occidental”. Journalists here got an early glimpse of the ballots in Davao del Sur when samples were shown during the Hermes Club press forum at the Waterfront Insular Hotel Davao. In them were a question on whether voters will favor
or not the creation of the new province. Republic Act 10360, which enacted the creation of the province of Davao Occidental, was passed by on November 28, 2012 and December 5, 2012 in the Senate. The newly-created province will be composed of five municipalities from the second district of Davao del Sur: Malita, Sta. Maria, Don Marcelino, Jose Abad Santos, and Sarangani. DAVAO City––Minalwang, a male juvenile Philippine Eagle rescued from its captor in Gingoog City in October 2011, rehabilitated at the Philippine Eagle Center here for nearly two years and released into Mt. Balatukan Range Natural Park in Gingoog City on August 15 this year, is dead, the fourth eagle killed among six released into the wild since 1999. Minalwang was found
dead on October 11 not from gunshot wounds as announced in Manila, but from infection “associated with trauma due to capture.” Dennis Salvador, executive director of the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) told MindaNews on Sunday morning that Minalwang’s death is “attributed to infection as a result of stress from recent capture by locals who wanted money for the bird.”
Salvador said Minalwang, which had a twostage (radio and satellite) transmitter attached to it to enable biologists to monitor and track its whereabouts, was captured by locals in Mt. Lumot also in Gingoog after it allegedly attacked their dog on October 7. He said Minalwang was reported to have been thrust into a sack and brought on foot to Claveria town in See MINALWANG/p.11
