A FORMER chairperson of the government peace panel negotiating with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) has called for the moving of the plebiscite and elections to later dates, else the MILF’s dream of a Bangsamoro entity plunges into the abyss, He warned, as well, that Bangsamoro leaders will not stand to win positions. Lawyer Jesus Dureza, chair of the government peace panel from 2001 to 2003, and Presidential Assistant for Mindanao during the Arroyo administration, said in a statement that it could be premature to hold an early plebiscite and elections for the Bangsamoro.
Atty. Dureza said the MILF is not ready yet to plunge into some political exercise. Dureza warned: “Kagi (Ebrahim Al Haj) Murad and the MILF are not yet prepared politically. They need more time to ripen. They will stand no chance at all if pitted against the savvy and long entrenched politicians.” Dureza said the MILF leaders should not ever think that they will get the political positions in the new Bangsamoro entity in a silver platter in an open elections. 72 former NPA rebels give up arm struggle CAMP EVANGELISTA, Cagayan de Oro City -Seventy-two fully armed former members of the outlawed New People’s Army (NPA) had formally surrendered to avail of the government’s “Gun for Peace and Social Integration Program,” a military official said on Thursday. Capt. Christian Uy, spokesperson of the army’s Public Affairs Division, said that the military has scheduled the turn over ceremony at the army’s 4th Infantry Division gymnasium here on Friday morning. He said that the surrenderers, most of them former regular NPA members and members of the Militia ng Bayan, operates in the mountain areas of
Northern Mindanao and Caraga Regions. Uy said that 48 individuals came from the province of Bukidnon, 18 from Agusan del Sur, 3 from Surigao del Sur, 2 from Misamis Oriental, and 1 from Agusan del Norte.
