Russia world’s 4th on number of smokers

Russia is among the world’s heaviest smoking countries, outranked only by China, India and Indonesia, according to a new report out Wednesday.

About 39 million of 143 million Russians smoked as of 2012, the latest year covered by a global group of researchers for a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Of these, 28 million are men and 11 million are women. The overall figure was 38 million in 1980, when the population was at 138 million.

In China, some 280 million smoked as of 2012 in a population of 1.35 billion.

Just over half of Russian men smoke every day, or 52 percent, the sixth highest proportion in the world in a list topped by Timor-Leste with 61 percent.

However, only about 15 percent of Russian women smoke, according to the study.

Militants picket SSS, PhilHealth in Davao

ISO certifies DOLE 10 CAGAYAN de Oro City–– The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in Northern Mindanao has been certified as an International Standard Organization (ISO), DOLE regional director Alan Macraya said on Wednesday.

He said Labor Secretary Rosalinda D. Baldoz informed the DOLE regional office that ISO certification was issued during the commemoration of the agency’s 80th founding anniversary on December 8, 2013.

City hospital has no ‘ICU unit,’ says solon

AGAYAN de Oro City––A city councilor on Wednesday has blamed the absence of the “Intensive Care Unit” (ICU) at the city-owned J. R. Borja General Hospital here, which resulted in the death of a patient admitted with Dengue disease.

City Councilor Candy Darimbang said that a 7-year old boy who was infected with “dengue” died at the city hospital for lack of medical facilities, especially the ICU where the patient could have been confined and be extended appropriate medical attention.

“C o n s i d e r i n g t h a t the city government has

promised to provide better health services to the poorest of the poor in the city, the incident was very frustrating,” Darimbang told members of the City Council during the regular session here.

Had there been an ICU unit at the city hospital, the death of the boy would not have happened, Darimbang added.

She said that she will pressure the city council and the city government to establish a medically equipped ICU unit at the city hospital in order that the hospital could serve the less fortunate city residents.

According to Darimbang, the private hospital here would not admit poor patients who could not provide down payment.

The city government created the hospital primarily with a mission to serve the poorest of the poor in the city, she said.

54.26% kids in C. de Oro not yet immunized, risk measles infection

MORE than half of the population, or 54.26 percent of children, here in Cagayan de Oro are not yet immunized and face the risk of being infected with measles and other diseases.

Councilor Dante Pajo, chair of the committee on health, has appealed to parents to cooperate with health authorities of the city at this time when the country is facing health risks due to the spreading of measles in the metro.

Pajo said parents should submit their children for immunizations immediately or take the risk of getting infected by the airborne-spreading measles in Metro Manila from people coming in via the airport and seaports.

Pajo said parents should bring their children to their respective barangay health centers. He said: “We have enough supply of vaccines, especially for measles.”

Councilor Pajo’s plea came following a survey result conducted by personnel, nurses and midwives of the City Health Office in October 2013 that shows 15,757 out of 29,039 children, with ages ranging from one year old to four years old in the 80 barangays of the city have yet to be given vaccines for measles, mumps and rubella (MMR).

Pajo commended health personnel and Barangay Health Workers (BHW) for the survey and for continuing efforts to implement the expanded program on immunization in all barangays.

The activity is one of the strategies of the Department of Health, Region 10, to prevent the outbreak of measles.

“We need to fight the disease through pushing for the control of outbreaks and to minimize the number of infected people. So far the most effective would be to implement the 4S,” she said, referring to search and destroy mosquito breeding sites, self-protection measures, seek early treatment if symptoms would be noticed, and say no to indiscriminate fogging.

Butuan City Councilor Virgilio Nery Jr., a doctor who chairs the council’s committee on health and sanitation, stated that the LGU is aware of the increase in dengue cases and has already intensified its actions against the disease.

“We are now implementing the programs the DOH has specified, together with the LGU’s own programs like the barangay cleanups,” he said. He added that they now conduct cleanup operations every Saturday. Barangay leaders, he pointed out, were

Dr. Gerna Manatad, head of the DOH’s Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance unit, said that the cases in all of 2013 reached 2,702 as against the 2,522 cases in 2012.

Butuan City leads the most number of cases with 839. Next is Agusan del Sur, with a combined cases of 538.

Manatad pointed out the need for LGUs to exert extra efforts in combating the problem as previous data suggest the number of cases would increase by the start of January towards February.

“This has more to do with our climate here, since by January towards February is the time of increased rainfall in the region,” she added.

Bukidnon wants to ban regulate firecrackers

MALAYBALAY CITY – Members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Bukidnon said they support passing legislation either banning or regulating the sale and use of firecrackers in the province following reports of increase in the number of injuries during revelries in the run up to the New Year.

The Provincial Health Office (PHO) reported 19 firecrackerrelated injuries in the last New Year revelries compared to only 5 a year ago. The cases were documented from December 29 to midday of January 2.

Board member Gordon Torres (3rd District) told MindaNews he will study the proposal for an ordinance banning firecrackers in Bukidnon. Torres chairs

the committee on peace and order at the provincial board.

He ordered his staff to study ordinances passed in other areas, like Davao City’s, which started banning firecrackers in 2001.

Valencia City councilor Oliver Owen Garcia, who sits as an ex-officio member of the provincial board as president of the Philippine Councilors League in Bukidnon, said he will support the move to pass an ordinance regulating firecrackers, saying it will be for the safety of the public, especially children.

“It will also compel manufacturers and vendors to sell only firecrackers observing the standards set by government,” he added.

reporters that local government units (LGUs) should take on the proposal banning all kinds of firecrackers as firework-related injuries continue to increase.

The repor ts quoted B elmonte, Marikina City Rep. Miro Quimbo and House Deputy Majority Leader and Citizens Battle Against Corruption (Cibac) Rep. Sherwin Tugna as rejecting the call of Health Secretary Enrique Ona for lawmakers and other stakeholders to consider a total ban on firecrackers after getting dismayed over the continuing increase in firecracker injuries.

Belmonte noted that the cities of Davao and Zamboanga already implemented a total ban.

Board member Marivic Montesclaros (3rd District) said it is timely to do something about firecrackers sale and use in the province.

But she noted that there might be a need to regulate only, not to ban.

She added that under regulation, sale will be limited to government and other dulyaccredited institutions.

“They will be allowed only during fiesta time, foundation days, and during Christmas and New Year holidays,” she added.

She said the legislation should also cover pyrotechnic effects aside from firecrackers.

Board member Jay Albarece (1st District) said it is important to pursue such legislation.

But he said one consideration is the economic impact as the livelihood of those dependent on the firecrackers industry will be affected.

Dr. Ricardo Reyes, PHO chief, said it is time for the local government units in Bukidnon

to pass ordinances banning the sale and use of firecrackers. He added that it must be towns and cities that should pass ordinances because they will be at the frontline of enforcement.

Reyes cited the example of Davao City, which pioneered the banning of firecrackers in Mindanao, has been promoting the use of “torotot” or party blowers to welcome the New Year.

Mayor R o d r i go D ute r te banned the sale of firecrackers and pyrotechnics during the Christmas season in 2001 by not issuing vendors and malls business permits. He said the money for fireworks would be better spent on food. He also announced a P5,000 bounty for those who could pinpoint anyone firing a gun during the merrymaking. (mindanews)

MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur - The Regional Human Rights Commission in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (RHRC-ARMM) announced 18 job vacancies to be assigned in its regional office in Cotabato City.

Lawyer Abdel Jamal R. Disangcopan, head of RHRC Provincial Office, said they are in need of three Attorney III with salary grade 21; Information Technology (IT) Officer I with salary 19; Accountant II with salary grade 16; Administrative Officer IV, Planning Officer II, Information Officer II, and Special Investigator II, all with salary grade 15; Administrative Officer III with salary grade 14, four Special Investigator I and one Administrative Assistant V with salary grade 11; Administrative Officer I with salary grade 10, and two Administrative Assistant III with salary grade 9.

For the position of Attorney III, one must have Bachelor’s Law degree, with RA 1080 eligibility, with one year of relevant experience and four hours of relevant training.

Qualification standards for IT Officer I, Accountant II, Administrative Officer IV, Planning Officer II, Information Officer II, Special Investigator II, and Administrative Officer III positions include Bach-

elor’s Degree, one year of relevant experience, four hours of relevant training, and 2nd Level Civil Service (CS) eligibility.

Applicants for Special Investigator I, Administrative Assistant V and Administrative Officer I are required to possess a Bachelor’s Degree and 2nd Level Civil Service eligibility, no relevant experience and training needed.

On the other hand, applicants for Administrative Assistant III must have completed two years studies in college, with one year of relevant experience and four hours of relevant training, and with 1st Level CS eligibility.

Qualified applicants are advised to submit their application letters, Personal Data Sheets and other documents to RHRC-ARMM Regional Office located at 1F Japan-ARMM Friendship Hall and Training Center, ORG Compound in Cotabato City or to the RHRC Sub Regional Office in Zamboanga City or RHRC Provincial Office , 2F Titanic Building New Capitol Complex, this city.

Disangcopan said all applications must be submitted on or before January 20, 2014.

Accordingly, the subregional and provincial offices are only going to accept applications. Applicants must be prepared to take the exam and interview in Cotabato City.

Emano’s vision to build up and repackage Mis amis Oriental’s agriculture and tourism industry, is embodied in the three-day festivity dubbed as the 1st Kuyamis Festival.

Today is the 84th MisOr Week where in every first week of the year, the provincial government holds the Kuyamis Festival to perk up the local business and tourism industry. This year’s festival has the theme :“Agro-Turismo sa MisOr Ipalambo.”

The festival runs from Januar y 8 to

10 this year at the Provincial Capitol Grounds.

The festival lines up various activities including Coconut Pro du c ts Display, Photo Exhibit, Sports Fest and Business Bazaar.

According to MisOr Provincial Tourism Officer Robert Maestre, Kuyamis was the original name of Misamis - a variety of sweet coconut found in the province and described as a Golden Malayan Dwarf Coconut Tree, which part of the Cocus Nusifera family.

He added that aside from branding the a c ti v ity Ku yami s , the provincial government intends to develop the coconut industry since according to the Philippine

Coconut Authority (PCA) statistics, Misamis Oriental is the 5th major producer of coconut in the country.

There will be prizes to local government unit (LGUs) participants which will be used to enhance coconut productivity and livelihood.

The festivity is associated with the founding of the Province on January 1, 1930 as separate and independent local government unit through Republic Act 3537 enacted by the Philippine Legislature on November 2, 1929.

He added that since then, every first week of Januar y of each year is dedicated to commemorate the birth of Misamis Oriental.

AN overwhelming majority hates corruption in government, and who does not hate this menace, but when the opportunity presents for them to be corrupt readily submit themselves to become disciples and practitioners of corruption.

We see this among neophyte politicians and newlyhired public servants who at the start of their respective public service careers were anti-corruption only to end up worst than those they replaced.

When aspiring politicians seek the people’s mandate they criticize to the hilt the incumbent for being corrupt and thus vow to be 180-degree different from them given the chance to serve through the mandate of the people. When elected to office, they start right but as their public service journey as elected official goes on, they end up being eaten by the corruption bug.

When appointive public servants get hired, they vow to be different compared to their seniors in public service who are mired in corrupt practices but more often than not end up no different to their seniors.

Indeed this phenomenon is appalling but puzzling as well. What is in government service that transforms almost everyone who is in that endeavor into corrupt beings? The corruption bug is not only gobbling up the atheists but even the most ardent believers of Jesus Christ.

I personally witnessed devout Christians who became politicians or appointive public servants whose transformation from being devout believers of Jesus to being slaves of the human nature, which is sin, happen overnight from the moment they entered public service.

When I was still in public service as executive assistant to the governor of Cebu, as chief of staff of one of Cebu’s solons when Congress was revived in 1987 and later as special assistant to then Senate President Jovito Salonga, many wondered why I and my family was still living literally in penury.

Call me stupid but I honestly could not see any way by which a public servant can enrich himself in office based on the salary he receives from government. Based on my own experience, public service is truly servanthood, meaning, you can’t expect to amass wealth while in public service. That is my testimony.

My years in public service taught me that only through corruption can one enrich himself in office either as an elected or appointed official.

If I was able to relatively give my family little luxury in life it was only after my stint in government when I entered the world of sales and marketing. Never did my family enjoy some luxury in life when I was in government.

Now, why would people, some of whom are even professed Christians, be gobbled up by the germ of corruption while in public service? This puzzling phenomenon is caused primarily by their lack of understanding of the fact that public service is servanthood.

This is disgusting. We should instead be insulting these people, spitting at their faces, taking away from them their properties which they bought with our money anyway. We should be treating as they should be treated---as scum and

filth of society who should not be emulated in any way.

-oooCHANGE FOR THE BETTER? TRY GOD: But then, the truth is that, us Filipinos are to blame, too.

So the question is, how do we start changing things for the better? Many have tried to offer solutions but it would seem nothing is really working. Why is this so? Well, my take is that, it is because God has not been consulted, not given a role, in any of these solutions.

Therefore, why don’t we try consulting and giving God a role in our everyday lives, in every decision we make, in everything we do? For starters, we should read the Bible everyday, absorb the wisdom from its pages and verses, and apply such Biblical wisdom in the things we do, say, or think. I am sure victory and real change will both come hurrying to us as a nation if we do this.

Will there be democracy in the Bangsamoro entity? Our nominal democracy

CAGAYAN de Oro City–– Very soon, we’re made to believe, the formal adoption of the proposed framework agreement on the Bangsamoro entity will take place.

It will be signed by the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), the group that successfully leveraged armed struggle and violence to gain recognition.

If the signing pushes through, it will be quite an achievement, rightfully claimed by the MILF although it was not the original proponent of the idea.

The Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) was the original but it was sidelined when the gov-

ernment unceremoniously decided to disregard its earlier agreement with it and pronounced the Autonomous Region for Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) a failed experiment.

Me a nw h i l e , M N L F chairman Nur Misuari has become a fugitive hunted for his role in the assault on Zamboanga last September 2013.

It was Nur’s group that coined the term Bangsamoro during the latter part of the 1960s, or just after the bizarre incident instigated by President Marcos during which a contingent of Muslim volunteers were mowed down by gunfire on Corregidor Island to prevent

them from escaping.

The “Jabidah Massacre” of 1968 triggered the MNLF’s secessionist movement, which used the term “Bangsamoro” to refer to the mainly Muslim peoples found in central and western Mindanao.

T h e introduction of “Bangsamoro” into our vocabulary is an achievement, but one that still needs elaboration to avoid its loose and reckless usage by various groups.

Let’s face it: we are a nation of mostly nominal Christians and nominal Muslims. So it is understandable that we also have a nominal democracy, democracy in name only but

not in reality.

In reality, the pollsters tell us that our society is ruled by just about 100 families that have established political dynasties.

Consider our behavior.

We celebrate independence but belittle our sovereignty, which we do not assert except under extreme conditions. Remember how we went along with Martial Law for 14 years before we got fed up and shrugged off the dictator in 1986 at Edsa?

We advocate autonomy but fail to manage our local economy or govern our own barangay, allowing it to be headed by ambitious but incompetent wannabes.

We make noises about federalism but fail to exercise even the most elementa-

ry tasks of self-governance, letting our municipalities, cities, or provinces be controlled by autocrats and dynasty-builders.

Other times, we make a fuss about wanting good government but elect or allow to be elected demagogues, charlatans, or clowns with little or nothing to qualify them for the job.

When they’re in office, we do nothing to make them perform as they promise or as public servants should.

Thus, although ever yone says that such people shouldn’t be entrusted with public responsibility, they get elected anyway.

Undeserved Respectability Worse, the so-called respectable citizens of our

community not only tolerate them but play ball with them, fraternizing and carousing with them, playing or posing or dancing with them, serving as ninong or ninang for their children, or joint-venturing in business with them.

That’s how trapos gain social respectability from Mr. Civic Leader or Mrs. Concerned Citizen—an honor they don’t deserve but which gets them elected to office time and again.

That’s also how trapos are able to establish never-ending dynasties that corner the power and the wealth of the community for themselves.

Zambo Sibugay village chieftain killed in ambush

AMBOANGA S I B U G AY – G u n m en killed a village chieftain and wounded another official in an ambush in Buug town in Zamboanga Sibugay province in southern Philippines, police said.

Po l i c e s a i d Wi l i r o Elisan, village chieftain of Santa Cruz in neighboring Diplahan town, was fatally shot, while his companion Juanito Encallado, the village treasurer, is wounded in the attack.

The two officials were on a motorcycle driven

by Reynaldo Baldicasa, a village councilman, when gunmen who were tailing them on another motorcycle, attacked them.

Baldicasa was unhurt in the ambush, police said, adding the two ambushers fled after the attack.

Police investigators recovered 7 bullet casing of 9mm pistol in the area. They also recovered a .45-caliber pistol of the slain village chieftain.

The motive of the ambush is still unknown, but police are investigating the attack. (Mindanao Examiner)

Ipil town turns-over water system project

IPIL, Zamboanga Sibugay – The municipal government here has turned-over a water system project (level II) to Barangay Labe and Barangay Timalang Lumbia yesterday.

T h e w at e r s y s t e m project, which benefits 300 to 500 households of the said barangays, was started in July 2012.

Business permit processing in Zambo down to 30 minutes ZAMBOANGA CITY – The processing time to renew business permits in this city has been lessened to 30 minutes as the local government has cut down the process to only three steps from the previous five.

Benjie Barredo, chief of the Business Permits and Licensing Office (BPLO), said the cutting down of the process is based on Executive Order 28 issued by Mayor Ma. Isabelle Climaco-Salazar, which mandates the streamlining of internal regulatory system on the business permit and licensing process.

Basically, the process

involves the submission of renewal application form at the BPLO, followed by the assessment and payment of taxes at the City Treasurer’s Office, and consequently the issuance of a temporary permit to operate (TPO) or the so-called conditional permit by Barredo.

Barredo said the TPO specifies the requirements and clearances that the business operator needs to secure within 90 calendar days.

He said that non-compliance of the requirements within the specified period would cause the automatic revocation of the TPO and eventually the issuance

of notice of closure and the actual closure of the establishment.

Barredo said that EO 28 also provides that the permit signed by the mayor will be released when all requirements and clearances are complied with and the TPO shall be surrendered to the BPLO. Barredo said that with the cutting down of the processing time, he expects an increase in the number of business registration this year compared to the last year’s 8,300.

He said that more than 500 business permits have already been processed as of Monday since the permit

renewal process went full blast January 2.

He said deadline for the renewal process is January 20 and late filers will be slapped with a 25-percent surcharge per quarter and two percent additional surcharge per month.

Meanwhile, since January 2, City Hall has extended the working hours of offices involved in the business permit processing from from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Mondays through Fridays, and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during Saturdays, Sundays and holidays to ensure business establishments can beat the deadline. (MindaNews)

PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur - The city government has lined up different activities for the week-long event dubbed as “Pasalamat Festival” the highlight of which is this city’s fiesta that falls every third Sunday of January.

The festival will kick-off January 13 with a series of activities showcasing the culture and tradition of this city’s tri-peoples--the

Christians, Muslims and Subanens--to enliven the spirits of Sto. Niño devotees.

The festival culminates on the third Sunday of this month, which is this city’s fiesta.

Vice Mayor Divina Grace Yu, who chairs the Pasalamat Festival 2014, said the activities will kick-off January 13 with an agrotrade fair at Plaza Luz to be spearheaded by the City Agriculture Office.

Yu said the Public Employment Service Office (PESO) in partnership with the Department of Labor

and Employment (DOLE) will hold a Jobs Fair the following day, January 14.

The Jobs Fairs will be participated in by local and overseas employment agencies, according to Yu. There will be also be sea games like swimming and others as well as fluvial parade. A variety show will be held nightly at the Plaza Luz’ Taclobo Stage, which is just in front of the city hall.

Mayor Romeo Pulmones has issued Executive Order No. 57 ordering this city’s 54 barangays to participate in all of the activities and

ZAMB OANGA CIT Y – Some 349 new positions as non-uniform personnel (NUP) of the Philippine National Police (PNP) are now open to qualified applicants, the Police Regional Office (PRO)-9 announced recently.

AVAO CITY - The newly-installed director of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) in Davao region has vowed to run after big-time crime syndicates involved in carnapping and gun-running activities, particularly those operating in Davao del Sur and Davao del Norte.

CIDG 11 director Sr. Supt. Joel Pernito said that they have already identified a number of active carnapping and gun-running groups operating in the region but said, “we can’t divulge the number of persons or groups we are monitoring at the moment.”

“But rest assured that our men are doing their job to help other law enforcers curb criminality in

the region,” Pernito said.

He said the arrest of one Raniel Diamonon Nacario, alleged to be a leader of the Dagul Carnapping Syndicate, set back the illegal operation of the group in Davao del Sur and neighboring Sarangani province.

DAVAO CITY -- Davao City Councilor Danilo Dayanghirang is poised to sponsor a resolution expressing strong opposition to the increase in monthly contributions to the Social Security System (SSS).

Effective this month, SSS contributions will rise to 11 percent from 10.4 percent.

Dayanghirang, who is also the chair of the committee on finance ways and means, said the SSS proceeded with the increase without due process.

Sonza added that based on their initial investigation, gunrunners are supplying firearms from Sta. Cruz in Davao del Sur, Davao del Norte, and Cebu City. He added that guns are sold for as low as P2,000 only. (PNA)

DAVAO CITY – Militant groups here picketed the offices of the Social Security System (SSS) and the Philippine Health Insurance Corp.

(PHIC) today to protest plans by the two agencies to increase premiums starting this month.

The protest coincides with efforts to file a temporary restraining order at the Supreme Court.

In last year’s State of the Nation Address, President Benigno S. Aquino III said it was time to increase collections for the two contributions to make up for “unfunded” aspects of the agencies.

Starting Jan. 1, SSS members’ monthly premium was increased by 0.6 percent.

For PhilHealth, the monthly premium of members with the lowest salaries was doubled to P200, with the additional P100 contribution to be shouldered 50-50 by the employee and employer But the 40 or so protesters said that the burden should not fall upon underpaid contributors to the premiums.

Eugene Domingo opens up about what she is looking forward to in 2014

Maraming nakapansin sa laki ng ipinayat ni Eugene Domingo lalo pa at very visible siya noong nakaraang 39th Metro Manila Film Festival para sa pelikula niyang Kimmy Dora: Ang Kyemeng Prequel. At sa kung papaano niya naggawa ang lahat ng ito, “Oo nga, siyempre ano, matagal na pagclecleansing, ang pagpapapayat naman hindi minamadali so this is really hard work and patience.”

Naging napakaganda ng taong 2013 para sa aktres, maliban sa kabi-kabilang awards na kanyang nakuha, iba’t ibang klase din ng pelikula ang kanyang mga naggawa at mga bagong endorsements. Kaya naman ibinhagi niya ang ilan sa mga hindi niya makakalimutang mga

pangyayari sa nakaraang taon.

Then when the inevitable abuses take place—election manipulation, financial mishandling, graft and corruption and nepotism, outright thievery—Mr. Civic Leader or Mrs. Concerned Citizen blames the system.

Who’s to Blame?

But bad governance cannot be blithely blamed on the system. The system is not self-operating. The blame properly belongs to those who operate and manipulate the system, along with those who make it possible

for them to do so.

Trapos cannot dominate politics or elections unless they are supported by citizens—in particular citizens who support candidates in hopes of profiting from the connection later on.

These ill-motivated citizens make it possible for corrupt politicos to take advantage of the community and society at large, exploiting the ignorant or buying the votes of the corrupt.

As long as we allow these vested interests to operate with impunity in our own community, in our own barangay, our country shall always be only a nominal democracy. No egotistic person can ever become a servant. Mark my word on this. Selfishness and greed are the equal opposite to servanthood; hence, one can only become a servant by divesting himself of his ego or self-centeredness.

One who gives his life in the service of others does not dream of living a life of luxury for they are anathema, irreconcilable to each other.

When one wants to be in public service, then he should be prepared to live a modest life. But in reality this is not the case the reason why corruption is so rampant in government and governance is mired in corruption.

Am I saying here that entering public service is a kiss of death? Certainly not! Government pay if spent wisely can still meet basic human needs. We survived as a family of six while I was still in public service. But we could not afford the luxury of having even just a second hand vehicle and we did not have the luxury of going to other places even just within the countr y for vacations.

But our situation in life then did not make us less humans. It did not make us aloof from the rest of the world. It did not make our life miserable because we could not af ford s ome luxuries in life. It, however, strengthened our faith in God and even heightened our spirituality.

Even when I went back to private endeavors we were still able to maintain the kind of life we had when I was still in public service. And we can even enjoy little luxuries now such as having a family van and can at times afford to go on a vacation in local tourist spots. We now have this kind of life but without having to tarnish our name and compromise our integrity.

Duterte to CHR on death threat to rice smugglers: Shut up DAVAO City––Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte lambasted the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) for saying that his death threats against rice smugglers operating in the city was “unethical,” adding that he really meant his warning.

Manila newspapers quoted CHR Chairman Loretta Ann Rosales as saying that Duterte’s threat was “unethical.”

Marc Titus Cebreros, chief of the CHR Information and Communication Division, was also quoted as saying that the mayor’s statement was “unbecoming of a public official.”

Duterte threatened to kill smugglers operating in the city during his weekly show Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa last Sunday.

“Anong unethical? Talagang gagawin ko! (What do you mean unethical? I’m really going to do it!)” Duterte said in an interview with reporters at the Waterfront Insular Hotel here on Wednesday.

On a beautiful, sunny afternoon last Nov. 9th, Kristine Marie, daughter of Oscar and Cecile Macmang Amaya, said “I do” to Rey Paulo de Vega, son of Lorenzo & Virginia de Vega, at Saint Clement Church in Hayward, California, witnessed by their parents, relatives and many friends.

Dinner and dancing followed at Sunol Valley Golf Club after the mass and wedding ceremony. It was a well attended party, with guests flying from various corners of the world. From Australia came uncle James Macmang, cousin Caroline Asuncion and her husband, from Singapore, cousin Megan Asuncion who videographed the event, flew all the way from Cagayan de Oro City and family friend Nancy Willkom Berces, from Seattle.

Susie Neri-Medal did the wedding cake while the floral arrangements were creations of Jane Willkom. The couple’s many friends filled the dance floor, with the new bride and groom leading the way. A big hit was the tango danced beautifully by Rey & Kristine. The bride is a UC Davies graduate after which she also took up nursing. She currently works as a nurse at Washington Hospital in Fremont. The couple will make their home in the Bay Area. The following photos speak louder than words – it was a lovely wedding worth telling and retelling.
