Lifestyle District opens; targets young professionals

A

new all-in-one establishment has arrived in Cagayan de Oro City giving upkeeps for the city’s booming developments.

Lifestyle District opened its commercial spaces to city’s various businesses Sunday, July 20.

Lifes t yle D is tric t is a future leisure abode which is considered as a revolutionary concept in the city.

This establishment was brought in CDO because of the latter’s necessity for an establishment where a convergence of different forms of lifestyle meet. Its initial

plan is to define, indulge and elevate experiences of human essentials of food, shelter, thirst, protection and leisure to whole new levels.

“The concept is a ones top s h op,” said Marian Agnes I. Soloveres, Manager of MonteCarlo Realty and Development Corporation, the developing real estate company of Lifestyle District.

Soloveres said that there is still no one-stop shop created in CDO and this is the reason they have decided to bring this establishment here. The establishment is a two-storey com merc ial complex. I t ’s

concept of a one-stop shop is a place where a customer would find all forms of recreations such as dining, relaxing and enjoying. Few of the sections they will be putting up inside the place are spa, gym and offices.

Its main target market is Lower A and B consumers that are composed of young professionals, who are fonder of recreations.

The establishment would also be opened to family gatherings and outings.

The location of Lifestyle District is uncovered across Corrales Extension, fronting

Capitol University. It is set at the crossroads of different establishments and institutions and also very near on the city’s premier malls.

A spot of its premise would also be a beautifully landscaped park called the “Green Patch Park” which will have an ambient lighting, grass, greens and foliage.

The establishment has 26 affordable and wellappointed spaces which are opened for lease.

Lifestyle District is also giving a free one-month renovation to their lessors.

It was learned that the league is composed of 130 city mayors nationwide, of which, Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista is the current President.

Mayor Oscar Moreno is also the Chairman of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) and Vice Chairman of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP).

M

y mother used to say that one way of sizing up a person is by knowing about the kind of food he/she enjoys since food is part and parcel of living well.

It wasn't until I left home that I realized that we have so many culinary delights, some of them peculiar only to Cagayanons - like the much-touted bihod (fish roe) coming from that special fish known as pigok (indigenous to Cagayan and Tagoloan rivers).

There's the binaki (made from milk and corn meal) that most people in the Philippines don't even have an inkling of. Then there's the fresh milk puto from the Soriano kitchen, the yemas, brazo de mercedes, sans rival and boat tarts that only Tita Gely Dayrit can make.

There's also the Elloso's banana candies and the late Tita Flor Jaldon's special coconut candies (not macaroons).

From my mother's kitchen, I learned to make keseo (white cheese from fresh carabao’s milk), budin (bread pudding), jalea (pure mango jam) and fresh milk ice-cream churned from a hand-cranked ice cream maker or garapinera.

Who can forget the late Tita Luz Macaranas' special ensaimadas, fresh lumpia and masa podrida (a kind of pastry/cookie made from flour with ube jalea filling ), the Castanos' empanadas, Lola Iling Fernandez's pastillas de leche (also made from fresh carabao's milk) and the manticao (or mantecao, small elongated cakes which come in two flavors: cinnamon and butter) and crema de fruta recipes of the Neri sisters (Tita Perla and Tita Flor).

Almost every family had tsokolate at breakfast and dinnertime made from their own backyard cacao trees.

What about the kayam? (a kind of fruit, shaped like a shell which is eaten boiled) I remember that my mother had a "suki" who would deliver cooked or boiled kayam to the house. I haven't seen kayam for a long, long time now.

And who can ever forget the ginamos made from hipon or little fish that come only once a year, usually the first day of February. I wonder if other places in the country have as many delicacies such as the ones that Cagayan can boast of (except for Pampanga and Bacolod, of course).

Bedweather Blues It’s that time of the year again when the rain sets the mood for all of us.

Going out of bed and preparing for work is a struggle these days when the weather is all gloomy and cold.

‘Bedweather’ blues are definitely back. I was wishing instead of reporting to work I am right there in the comfort of my own bed, snuggling my huge pillow and staying there all day long.

Yes, I know it’s just wishful thinking.

These days, we cannot afford to be won over by our whims to just lie there and do nothing.

Not even the rain can stop a determined bee from working.

Getting over these blues are not easy but with constant selfreinforcement, you’d feel like the sun’s shining brighter than ever!

Want to perk up your cold mornings?

Open up a freshly ground pack of coffee beans and serve yourself a cup of hot brewed Americano or just tear a packet of instant 3-in-1 and you’re almost good to go.

Don’t forget to stretch! My way of stretching is tidying up the pad before taking a shower and dressing up.

This way, my body is amped up and won’t feel the urge to slow down.

Tempted to just cuddle in the couch while reading your favorite book?

You can do that on weekends but if it’s on a work day, toss the book in your hand bag, bring it to work and read it during your lunch break.

Whip up some hot coffee or chocolate if you must. It’s called compromise.

And while you are at your rainy day perk plan, don’t forget to gear up in style.

Pay it forward When I was still a kid I used to sing the song “count your many blessings name them one by one, count your many blessings and look what the Lord has done” ...

Indeed the message of the song is true we have to count our blessings everyday so that we will be reminded that we are all blessed in different ways but sad to say many people are so overwhelmed with the harsh realities of life that we tend to forget how each of us are actually blessed by God. We forget to see the bigger picture that God is actually bigger than all of our problems, as a result we become bitter, insecure, envious and worse greedy without even knowing it. I guess it’s the worst when we become “a prideful monster” unknowingly.

Yes admitting to ourselves that we have become such is hard but it’s the only way that we can free ourselves from such monsters in us.

When we lear n to ac knowledge the bad c h a ra c t e r i s t i c s we h a ve developed because of our hurts and upon realizing it that it’s not good, forgiveness from God and forgiving ourselves will be much more possible.

Why am I saying this?

It’s because competition in the events’ industry is tough to the point that some of us are willing or unknowingly gambling there integrity.

W h e t h e r yo u a r e a m u s i c i a n , p h o t o g ra p h e r, videographer, organizer, stylist, makeup artist, host... we all have the tendency to become such, that’s why we need to be careful. Money, fame, prestige can be very appealing but when you lose your integrity ... you lose all.

At times, when insecurity and envy knock on our hearts let us be reminded that each of us is greatly blessed.

Again, count your blessings name them one by one and you’ll be surprise that you are truly blessed more than half of this nation.

There’s no reason for

insecurity or envy because all of us are gifted distinctively.

In a field of competition there’s always going to be somebody who will come out on top but not because you did not win means you are not good rather it’s a challenge to become much better in the coming days.

When somebody commits a mistake don’t gossip, deal with the issue if you’re involved if not mind your own business.

Keeping our minds and hearts free from unnecessary issues can make us more productive and effective in our respective fields.

When we are progressive let us be reminded as well to keep our feet on the ground and that all our efforts would have been in vain if not for God. We do not have the license to boast but rather God will be happy with us when we extend help to others without expecting something in return.

If you’re familiar with the movie “pay it forward” ... then you know what I mean... this is one principle that I’ve practiced over time. God is blessing me so much that I want to bless others too in whatever way I can ... as simple as connecting a client to another musician because they wanted a deeper set of jazz music, recommending fellow suppliers for free or simply booking a sound system supplier for a client without extra charge.

These are just little things but I do them sincerely because I want to do to others what God has done unto me.

I am richly blessed so I am going to continue to PAY IT FORWARD. How about you?

Advanced Directives:

Should We or Should We Not In one of the case conferences that I attended, I overheard a group of Clinical Clerks discussing one of their patients, who is terminally ill.

The one in charge of this particular patient was preparing the clinical summary just in case her patient dies.

A member of her team was teasing her, why so early a summary, just because her patient has a DO NOT RESUSCITATE ORDER? I was struck by her answer: I want to facilitate the release of my patient in order not to delay further the family. Whew! I salute this incoming member of the Medical Community.

In our country, being a tightly knit family and all, with that embedded culture of BAHALA NA system, we oftentimes forget to prepare for the eventuality of our mortality.

Most, if not all, would not even wish to discuss it, as if, to do so, is an invitation. But, we all will go that way. It is alright if we die of natural causes like old age, but, where, a chronic illness hits us or the Big C that can make us candidates to become terminally ill, it is added knowledge to understand and know what a DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) or an Advanced Directive is.

A DNR is just a type of an Advanced Directive, wherein the patient makes his/her wishes known to his/ her family, friends and the Medical Staff.

I have been witness to patients going into a Cardiac Arrest or, patients who become comatose, or sometimes termed as basket cases, wherein life is being sustained by mechanical ventilators, and tubing everywhere.

You can feel the pain and stress of the family and friends who watch a loved one in this condition. It would be worth it, though, if the patient will come off it, better.

But studies have shown that survival rate once a patient undergoes resuscitation is in the 6-15%, in a hospital setting. This becomes worse for patients with chronic illnesses, and those with malignancies.

To resuscitate or not, is actually a very difficult and touché issue, that we oftentimes shy away from discussing it.

But, I believe that it is always good to understand the basics of an Advanced Directive or a DO NOT RESUSCITATE. There must be a balance between quality of life and quality of death. An Advanced Directive is but a wish list, which a patient would want done or not done to him/her.

It contains his/her desire as to the extent of medical attendance to his/her needs like, being attached to a mechanical ventilator, whether an endotracheal intubation is preformed, defibrillation done when the heart stops, medications that will be given or withheld.

A DNR on one hand is written as an order by the Attending Doctor, as per instruction of the patient or the family.

This is written down in the chart. Just like an advanced directive, it also mentions what should be or should not be done to the patient, should the patient go into cardiac or respiratory arrest.

In both instances, basic medical care like the giving of oxygen is not denied the patient.

It is important to discuss these matters with their Clinician, in order to appreciate the medical condition of their patient, what to expect and the prognosis, in order for them to arrive at an informed decision.

It eases the burden on the family in making that crucial decision with regards the continuance or discontinuance of certain treatment modalities for their terminally ill patients.

A major consideration would be, if the benefits far outweigh the burden, and if the intervention can improve the quality of living of the patient. But more than the unburdening the family, is the very thought, that the patient is spared from the unnecessary pain and suffering. For to die with dignity is as much of a right as well as a gift.

Klarex to partner with City Hall in making CDO climate-resilient NOTING the threats the city is facing from a c hanging climate, Rep. Rolando “Klarex” Uy yesterday said he will partner with City Hall in the implementation of “green” policies and programs that w i l l m a k e C a g a ya n de Oro client-resilient.

Uy said that since hotter summer and wetter rainy seasons brought about by the c hanging climate are now the “new normal,” there is a need to prepare communities, especially coastal and riverine barangays — like his very own Barangay Carmen — against the impact of climate c hange.

“Programs on disaster/climate c hange mitigation and adaptation m ust go together with programs that will make our communities resilient to the impacts of climate c hange and environmental degradation,” he said.

Uy said he is willing to learn how he can best help his constituents in the first congressional district, especially his own Barangay Carmen

— where he ser ved as a longtime c hair man before becoming a congressman — become disaster/climate c hange resilient since many par ts of the district are vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and environmental d e g r a d a t i o n .

Abandoned, abused and neglected kids housed at the city-run Tahanan ng Kabataan and Boystown will soon heave a sigh of relief as the City Social Welfare and Development Office now look for ways and means to rehabilitate its dilapidated buildings and address the lack of beddings, mattresses and other basic facilities.

The search is on for ‘Man of Himologan 2013’

WITH the aim in view at showcasing talents and skills of Cagayan de Oro (CDO) youths, the FHGG Event Matters, a group of event organizers, has organized a pre-fiesta event dubbed as “Man of Himologan 2013.”

The pageant for men, which is participated by 12 candidates from different barangays of CDO aims to bring together confident, intelligent, socially-motivated and talented young men of the city to compete in a search. The search brings out the youth icon that would serve as role model of CDO young individuals.

Competing through talent, intelligence, wit and elegance, the 12 male contenders were recently presented in a press conference held on July 20, 2013. They are: Napoleon E. Fernan III, 21 years old of Barangay Agusan; Rico P. Anciado, 18 years old of Barangay Gusa; Carl Joshua A. Abas, 18 years old, studying at Capitol University (CU); Arbel D. Janubas, 25 years old, studying at Phinma College; Rejan Gang, 25 years old of Barangay Kauswagan; Ramon N. Banaag, 27 years old of Barangay Lumbia; Nekolai B. Calixtro, 22 years old, student of Liceo de Cagayan University (LdCU); Warren L. Villanueva, 19 years old, Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan (XU); Royien Tommy V. Ramiro, 27 years old, Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST); Jon Karlo L. Dimarucut, 19 years old, studying at CU; Vic Angelo F. Flores, 23 years old of Barangay Macasandig; and Ed Lorence C. Cimafranca, 19 years old, LdCU. The search is anchored on social responsiveness and personality development, organizers said.

The winner would be the hailed Ambassador of the Department of Tourism – Region 10 (DoT-10).

He will be then an active advocate of education, environment, tourism, heritage, and culture and arts.

Together with FHGG Event Matters, Dot-10 is a potent partner of the search, encouraging awareness and advocating responsiveness on youths through the mentioned fields.

Scheduled Funwear Competition of Man of Himologan 2013 is on July 27, 2013, 5:00 pm, at Pryce Plaza Hotel while the Fashion Show is slated on August 3. The main pageant day is on August 11 at 4:00 pm at Centrio Mall.
