Coffee Table Book set for launch, Sept 8

T

he coffee table Jesuits in Mindanao: The Mission (Muse Books) will be launched on Sunday, September 8, 2013 as one of the highlights of the renaming of the Xavier University Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The date coincides with the Feast of the Nativity of Mary, Mother of Jesus Christ.

“The book chronicles the life and joys of Jesuit missionaries among the people of Mindanao,” said publisher Ramoncito Ocampo Cruz (XUGS ’67) “It honors Jesuits present and past, the people whose lives and thoughts they were able to influence and the schools they built: Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan, Ateneo de Davao University and Ateneo de Zamboanga University.”

The 300-page coffee table book shows a white-cassocked priest riding a carabao on its cover and is lavishly illustrated with a pictorial history of the Jesuit Mission in Mindanao, commencing from their return to the Philippines in 1861.It is excellently laid out and beautifully printed in Singapore.

Eat, Pray, Love

T

aken from the movie of this title, the words greet the customers of Chingkee Tea as they enter the cozy sanctuary free of the heavy rains pouring on the rest of Cagayan de Oro City.

Customers would find it hard to resist the invitation to leave a world’s worth of problems outside with the pink porcelain roses and small pillow hearts scattered around the charming tea shop.

“Drinking tea is a lifestyle,” said Sharee Mae U. Te, the very young entrepreneur who owns the tea shop which is now a year and five months in business. And although several businesses have worn out the changing lifestyles selling line, only few have backed it with sincerity as Chingkee Tea does.

“We have notions that it is for old people,” Ms. Te said. “I wanted to introduce it to young people. That it’s not just medicinal. Drinking it involves our different senses.”

“Milk tea is very likeable but I want to share the different kinds of tea that suit different kinds of moods. My staff before didn’t drink tea. So we have tea tasting. I am glad that they now would ask me for the price of the tea I bring in from other countries because they would like to try them.”

Laila G. Soliven, who visited Cagayan de Oro for a weekend vacation, agrees that Chingkee Tea has made a distinction for itself. “I am not much of a foodie but I’m a sucker for quaint restaurants and cafes where you go for the experience besides the food.”

Already a tea drinker since she could not drink coffee for medical reasons, Chingkee Tea was a new experience altogether. “The tea they offer are different from those that we have in Manila,” she said. “Especially the yakult series – I have never seen these in Manila. I did not know you can do much more with tea in terms of mixes. Maybe if I were a resident of CdO, Chingkee Tea would be one of the places I would frequent.”

Having worked hard at starting the shop, even going to Taiwan to study how to make authentic Taiwanese milk tea, MsTe continues to do hands-on management. She goes the rounds in making sure the customers are satisfied with their drinks. Ms. Te also shares that at the start, they would taste all of the drinks before serving them to make sure it was the perfect mix. “As a result, we had a hard time sleeping for days because of the caffeine overdose,” she laughs. “But now, we have become confident in the mixtures and just imagine if we still test it now. It would be hard to keep up with the orders.”

All these have paid off, their shop having expanded over twice its size in October last year. In addition to the expansion, they were also able to open another branch near two large schools in Barangay Macasandig.

There was another motivation behind the opening of ChingkeeTea. “I wanted to display my love for art,” said Ms. Te. “I thought of starting a café, but the market was already saturated for coffee. Besides I don’t drink coffee.

The milk tea industry was then growing in Manila.”

What became of this passion are the collages found on chairs and tables, personally designed plastic cups, and a lot more knick knacks displayed around the shop. A mural at its bordered outdoor space was also done by local artists all of whom Ms. Te first met as customers of her shop.

Chingkee Tea has managed to make its interior designing an interaction with its customers, accomplishing its goals of making the place a hub for art.

With her life threaded through with tea, Ms. Te does not want to be boxed in the trending milk tea shop business.

“I want to be the tea authority here,” she said. “I want to be able to make my own tea someday, combining leaves and herbs knowing their health benefits and what effect they could have on the mood of a person.”

Although the shop admittedly targets the young, their first customers had been older – those who were already working and had already cultivated the habit of drinking tea. When the young started to pour in and eventually filled the place, Ms. Te said they felt somewhat out of place. “They asked me to open another branch in the residential areas near SM. I would want that for expansion maybe in the future.”

“I really wish they would open a branch near our subdivision as well,” said Camille B. Cruz, a frequent customer of Chingkee Tea who comes from Terry Hills to Divisoria just to hang out at the shop. “I started to like milk tea when it was introduced for the first time here in Cagayan de Oro by a different tea shop. But I have never had tea as good as the one in Chingkee Tea. Their art in their shops also make it nice to spend time in with friends.”

There had already been individuals interested in franchising the brand but Ms. Te says they are not yet ready for it. She also said that the tea shops that would banner the name ‘Chingkee Tea’ will have to have the same ambiance and artsy chic look her current two shops have. “Because that is me,” she said. “It is very personalized.”

With tea becoming part of her life, Ms. Te admits it had not been always that way. “My dad gave me tea when I was younger but I didn’t like it then,” she recounts. “One time in college I was very sick and had some mint tea in Starbucks. It helped a lot in improving my condition so from then on I started drinking tea.”

Centrio Mall to give out fiesta sale

s participation for the upcoming fiesta celebration, Centrio mall will have its Kagay-an Festival sale this August 24-28 and will give out up to 80% off, Marketing Supervisor Justine Tiro said.

This very first mall-wide sale is a kick off also for their first fiesta celebration together with the city of Cagayan de Oro. Merchants of theirs will also participate even though some of these had already piloted seasonal sales earlier this year.

Aside from the sale, Centrio also participated and sponsored Kagayan Festival Marathon, a core event of the fiesta. This marathon will be held on August 18, 2013.

To hype up the fiesta, the sale

would be followed by a Kagay-an Adventure Fair on the week of the fiesta.

They will be inviting top companies which are offering adventure activities such as Dahilayan Adventure Park and Kagay Whitewater Rafting.

This sale would also be a venue for the tourists that would be coming for the fiesta in a sense that there would be a one-stop shop to do the bookings for these adventure venues.

In addition, there would also pasalubong stalls that would be put up which will display local products.

According to Tiro, these mall activities are planned in order to promote and boost the tourism in the city.

“From the recent report that Cagayan de Oro is a competent city, it is one proof that the lined up activities will still push through,” she added, stating that whatever bad that happened in the city recently, Cagayan de Oro will still push through the fiesta events which will prove and show other cities that this city is really competitive.

When Marshmallow Forces Unite Test

I

The performers’ eagerness to contribute for a good cause is inspiring.

There were no superstars that night, just plain artists with hearts.

All came ready to prove that it is possible to assemble and march forward as one.

Ryan Cayabyab’s iconic song “Paraiso” was a fitting finale to the event.

A mixture of its haunting lyrics woven with original spoken verses closed the one hour gathering in a spiritually high note.

Onstage, the performers stood as one as a visual manifestation of their message that they are one force, one heart, one voice.

I wish that there will be another chance for these artists to be together once more but hopefully not for another unfortunate event bust just to bring more positive energy in the city.

Art has always been used as an instrument for social change and now is the right chance to make things happen once again.

t was just a spur of the moment idea, a plan that spawned after the bombing incident. It was a dream that came into fruition fueled by passion and love for the city.

I am so fortunate to have been part of such a wonderful experience.

It was the first time that I was able to collaborate with other artists in Cagayan de Oro for a special concert mounted for a worthwhile cause.

It started through an idea that floated via Facebook a few days after the tragedy at Rosario Strip.

Within hours, local artists confirmed their participation and signified interest to pitch in. Days after, the venue and date was set.

Thus, Pagbantog Kagay-an was born- A concert against violence and injustice.

Being one of the performers was a humbling experience.

It allowed me to interact with fellow performers who share the same drive to express what we felt through the arts.

Our efforts were just a simple step and our modest contribution to stand firm against lawlessness that hound our beloved city.

How am I in this area? Struggling just like you perhaps.

Facing another level in my career as God gives me another set of responsibility and at the same time going online school for music, challenging as it is I remind myself of such definition and How God strengthens me each day as I go through the process.

Discipline is inevitable in any field.

We all need it our careers.

It takes discipline to master a musical instrument, to perfectly sing songs, to dance gracefully and even to study continuously even after school life.

Physical, emotional and mental disciplines are important however what ties them all is the Spiritual Discipline that we should not forget and neglect.

It is the official Street Child World Cup song for the Road to Rio 2014.

The video shows Payatas FC, a group of Filipino street children who have been introduced and trained in playing street football and as you will see in the video – these kids now hold a lot of hope in life.

I have always been a fan of football, once you’ve played the game – you keep on going.

I like football not just because it’s one of my favorite sports, but watching how FIFA fights racism, how the Azkals (Philippine Men’s National Football Team) gave inspiration to the younger generation, how these kids from Payatas were given new hope – it is passion at work.

The video “I am Somebody” digs deeper into our hearts as human beings.

T

he pancreas is one important organ that is located behind the stomach in the upper abdomen. It is very near the gallbladder and liver, too.

Thus, it is not surprising to note that there are instances where, affectations of the pancreas will also affect the stomach, the small intestine, liver.

Its functions is related to the secretions of the cells seen in the pancreas: the islet cells, through its insulin and glucagon regulate sugar (glucose) metabolism , and the acinar cells are responsible in the secretion of digestive enzymes.

Pancreatitis can be acute or chronic. The clinical manifestations of pancreatitis are related to the production of the digestive enzymes while still in the pancreas.

Ordinarily, these enzymes once secreted, these are pushed to the small intestines to do what it is supposed to do- help in the digestive process.

However, in the presence of gallstones, certain medications, infectious agents, abdominal surgery, smoking and alcohol intake, the functions of the pancreas is compromised.

In cases where alcohol is the cause of the pancreatitis, the injury is related to damage and blockage of the pancreatic ducts due to digestive enzyme

In general, pancreatitis secondary to alcohol intake will require prolonged and hazardous drinking, which in turn causes a progressive and irreversible damage to the pancreas.

It is quite difficult really to quantify how much or how often or how long the drinking must be, in order to cause damage to the organ.

There are individuals who may not even succumb to pancreatitis.

But, this doesn’t excuse one from doing harm to one’s pancreas.

Diagnosing the disease will require clinical history: pain is sudden in onset, severe and is felt in the upper abdominal area that may radiate to the back, and worsens after eating.

Characteristically, the pain is

somewhat relieved by bending forward.

Other manifestations include nausea and vomiting, and if it is chronic, the pain is recurrent, associated with passage of oily and smelly stool, indigestion and weight loss.

Once seen in the clinic or emergency room, and pancreatitis is the initial impression, blood tests for digestive enzymes, amylase and lipase will be requested. Ultrasound and XRAY are likewise ordered.

Complications include a patient’s increased vulnerability to infections, kidney failure, diabetes, pseudocyst formation and malnutrition.

But, the more feared complication is circulatory collapse as it can cost the life of the patient unless attended to immediately. Treatment is directed towards what caused the pancreatitis, meaning, if it is all alcohol related, then, withdrawal of the alcohol.

Hospitalization and directed symptom management is given in order to stabilize the condition of the patient.

Lifestyle changes like alcohol and cigarette abstinence, low fat diet are simple things that will help one in preserving his/her pancreas.

When I open my eyes to a glorious new morn, I take a few more luxurious minutes in bed stretching & anticipating my day. I always face the day excited and happy. I take my time browsing over some spiritual reading, then on to a slow breakfast & idle chatter with members of the family.

These rituals are enjoyable & harmless by themselves. But before I know it, my morning is gone. The tiny minutes frittered away on some pleasant indulgences soon add up to huge chunks of valuable time lost. The sad part is, they have become a habit with me, and have set the standard of a pampered life. I didn't realize it, but I have become a slothful person.

I can argue that I deserve this.

That I am just enjoying the wellearned fruits of my labor. Didn't I work myself to the bone for the past 3 decades?

The sluggard will find nothing wrong with a lifestyle of comfort & ease. But for a person with a purpose, for a worker in God's vineyard, this is disgraceful behaviour.

I will not call myself lazy. I can be counted on to deliver a good job.

The problem is, I know I can do better.

The good job can still be transformed into a masterpiece. And I should not just deliver, I should yield an abundant harvest.

then we have to concede that we are slothful people. We can do more, but we are procrastinators.

I'm not talking about being busy.

There are countless persons who have their nose relentlessly on the grindstone.

For them, life has become a neverending drudgery of toil and work. A donkey's world.

I'm talking about the majority who can't seem to harness their time, energy and willpower for greatness.

Your dreams are too wonderful to dump in the garbage bin of procrastination.

How do you know if you are a procrastinator?

If you are just taking tiny baby steps toward your dream, making soft little decisions, never straying from your comfort zone, and easily cast down by excuses, you are a procrastinator.

Be bold. Ride life like a bull.

Take it by the horns.

Procrastination is not only a thief

The longest job to finish is the one that took you too long to start.

The work you keep postponing, is the work you won't finish.

A work once begun, is already half done.

Everytime you plan to do your work tomorrow, or next week, or very soon, your dream is sailing farther away from you.

The best time to build your dreams was a decade ago; but the next best time is right now!

So how do we demolish our tenacious enemy, Procrastination?

Focus all your attention and determination in doing the work that needs to be done at hand. Do it immediately.

Instantly. Right away. Without delay. Pronto!

Don't wait until some conditions have been met, or some other chore has been accomplished first, or when you are feeling good, or in the mood.

Just jump right in. Attack the task.

When you feel overwhelmed at the enormity of your goal, ask yourself, what's the next step?

Then just take that one step.

You only need to take the next step.

You are not required to jump to the top of the mountain of your ambition in one single leap.

You are asked to climb the mountain only one step at a time.

Easy does it. Steady as she goes.

Work smarter, not harder.

Using the "right now, pronto" approach will knock down procrastination, before it can rob you of your lofty ambition!

Seda Centrio Feeding Program

Seda Centrio employees led by General Manager Lorenzo Tang conducted a feeding program for children of the Shell-Gawad Kalinga Village at PN Roa Subdivision, Calaanan last August 10, 2013.

Some 150 children from the approximately 200 households residing in the village benefitted from the program conducted as part of the corporate social responsibility program of Seda Centrio, one of the three Seda hotels nationwide of AyalaLand Hotels and Resorts Corporation.

“This is our way of giving back to the community for the warm welcome it has given Seda

Centrio, said Mr. Tang. “We wish to help those less fortunate who suffered in the Sendong tragedy our little share in alleviating their hardship.”

Aside from Mr. Tang, other Seda Centrio officers who joined the activity included Ms. Fe Macion, assistant financial controller; Mr. Noah Bubod, engineering manager; and Ms. Amelita Gutierrez, sales manager.

Besides the food ,the children also received simple tokens like pencils and ballpens, as well as cholodates and candies as prizes for the games prepared by the donors.

Seda Centrio worked on the

project in partnership with Gawad Kalinga Cagayan de Oro Chapter through Mr. Tootsie Besinga, Shell-GK project manager.

Mr. Besinga said the initial batch of 122 GK houses in the village were turned over to the Cagayan de Oro City government represented by Vice Mayor Caesar Ian E. Acenas on December 19, 2012 by Mr. Edgar Chua, country manager of Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation which provided funds for the project. In addition, Shell has also donated a multipurpose hall and an additional 78 houses by June, 2013 to bring to 200 the number of houses in the village.

With these words, Cagayan de Oro City second district Rep. Rufus Rodriguez (CDP) dismissed allegations that government is really bent on muzzling the “freest and liveliest press in Asia.”

Rodriguez told the Business Mirror that his intention is not to muzzle or regulate Philippine press but only to “professionalize” it, noting the many “chainsaw media/journalists” who are like vigilantes out to do the bidding of the highest bidder.

This way, we can professionalize the journalism profession and weed it from unscrupulous characters,” he said.

Rodriguez also urged all journalists to put into writing their objections, comments and suggestions about the proposed measure and give them to him so he can amend his bill for the good of all journalists.

“I suggest you help convene the Cagayan de Oro Press Club and discuss this bill. Then give me all your inputs, favourable or not, so I can also make the bill better,” he told this reporter.

Car for hole-in-one, Pueblo de Oro’s golf tournament

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY - A Toyota Vios awaits the lucky golfer who will make a hole-in-one during the Pueblo de Oro Golf Club’s fiesta tournament this weekend.

The member-guest tournament has drawn around 275 players from neighboring clubs in Iligan, Ozamiz, Marawi and Bukidnon, and faraway Davao, Cebu and Manila.

So far no one has made a hole-in-one in the history of the club’s annual tournament that is held every August during the fiesta activities of Cagayan de Oro City.

Members of the club invite non-member players, that is why it is called a member-guest tournament.

Club manager Clifford Celdran said major prizes will be awarded to the winners including trophies and additional hole-in-one worth P100,000.

According to Micael Chiong Jr., chairman of the ways and means committee, the club was able to get many sponsors who donated prizes and giveaways.

The registration fee is P2,500 but each player will be given giveaways worth P5,000 each.

There will also be raffle prizes worth a total of P400,000.

Tournament chairman Eduardo Alaba said awarding will be on Sunday afternoon.

The organizers were worried about the July bombing in Cagayan de Oro but Celdran said they pushed through with the tournament following the lead of the city government in pushing through with the fiesta activities.

He said there have been no untoward incidents in the previous tournaments.

Next year the club will be pushing for the inclusion of the tournament in the official list of fiesta activities with the city government.

Father Herbert Schneider, PJAA executive director, said donations for the book will go directly to the Philippine Province of the Society of Jesus through the PJAA which serves as the development office of the Province.

“We are grateful to the publisher, Ramoncito Cruz and Media Wise Communications for their kindness and untiring effort to organize photos and stories documenting the mission of Jesuits in Mindanao since 1596.

The funds will go a long way to serve our fellow Jesuits who gave their all in mission and would still do so if not for illness
