o be able to be part of the team behind the first ever Dragon Boat Team in Cagayan de Oro City is such an hono and unexpected blessing.

Being more of an artist than an athlete, to help in spearheading this endeavor is a surprise feat for me.

Although, it is not in the physical element of the sport that I will indulge myself in, it is still a daunting task to ensure that the Liceo U Titans Dragon Boat Team will sail smoothly in the years to come as athletes and as ambassadors of the majestic Cagayan de Oro River.

It is our vision that this team will help bring the attention back to their river and to once again see her beauty amidst the tragedies of the past.

The dragon boat team will become our front-liners in helping Safer River Life Saver Foundation, Liceo U's community extension unit involved in the conservation, protection and rehabilitation of the river.

This becomes more than just a sporting event but a mission to help Cagayan de Oro River.

The applicants to the team are already pouring in and hopefully come September, the final roster of paddlers will be formed and shall comprise

the group that will represent the university and the city in upcoming competitions in the country.

Dragon boat racing has become one of the sports to watch lately in the Philippines as our very own national team continues to reap medals and recognition abroad.

This is also one of the objectives of our very own team, to produce sportsmen who are ready to compete in the national and international arena.

Training will be a tough but surely a fun one.

Rowing twice a week along the river will hopefully become a regular fare for early morning and late afternoon commuters and passersby that traverse the bridges in the river.

Their presence will hopefully become a mood changer and provide hope to Kagay-anons, sending out an image of inspiration that we as one people, will row together and beat the odds.

So folks, in a few weeks time get ready to slow down and if time and weather permit drop by the banks of the Cagayan River and enjoy the cool breeze and the sight of paddlers pushing their limits to conquer the world of dragon boat racing.

Paddles up!

THE HARD DREAMER

S

eries of images or thoughts in the mind of a person asleep - the idle fancy, the vision, the aspiration, the yearnings - they are the dreams that have interested, puzzled and frightened people since thousands of years.

All kinds of strange explanations have been written and talked about dreams.

Dreams interpreters have published innumerable books.

I bought some of them long time ago.

I caught myself reading them and trying to analyze my dreams, resulting becoming unsure and sometimes really undecided about the many different explanations regarding the same dream content.

At one time, people thought that the figures appearing in dreams were messengers from the gods.

It was generally believed

that dreams came from something outside a person's special skills.

Today it is believed that the dreamer himself creates dreams and that his or her dreams get a very special meaning.

Your health may have an effect on your dreams.

A person, who is feeling ill or uncomfortable, will have different kinds of dreams than that of a person, who is doing good and who is happy.

If a person is hungry or feels cold or very tired - his dreams may include those feelings, Also former events may have a lot to do with what we dream about.

Often, the person or situations in a dream are those in our life.

Or our emotions may make you have the kind of dream you have.

Needing or wanting something may be expressing in a dream, and frightened

may become a dream's part.

I dream a lot. I am still dreaming of a better world.

Yes, it's naive and blue-eyed I know.

I am dreaming of surroundings without ignorance and arrogance, and with real good friends who don't turn aside if we need them.

I dream of a world with people who will stop killing each other because of stupid and incomprehensible reasons.

Dreams are foams? Maybe.

Maybe not.

Long time ago, Confucius said: "The only who steals our dreams brings us to death!" Pwede! Or how about this Hungarian saying: "In dreams and in love nothing is impossible!" And William Shakespeare's Hamlet: "Sleeping! Maybe also dreaming! Yes, that's it!".

Let's dream hard, and, let's work harder!

WHEN WE KNOW OUR CALLING...

ometimes God doesn't give you what you want not because He doesn't want to bless you but because He wants you to focus on your calling.

The question is how do we know our calling ? Like it or not each of us are called for a specific mission wherein it is tailored for us individually, but with a world offering us so much our calling can become blurry.

The world entices us to aspire for fame,fortune and success.

It's not bad that we work for our families and succeed in our endeavors but if it becomes our ultimate goal in life then their lies the danger of loving the things of this world.

How easily we forget that all of us are pilgrims in this earth as the song says "I am a flower quickly fading here today and gone tomorrow a wave tossed in the ocean a vapor in the wind..." Why

make it as a goal to become rich ?

When we can bring nothing when we die.

For sometime after I finished schooling I tried various jobs both as an employee, freelancer on several areas, and tried to do retail business as well but at the end of each day when a certain project is done I would be happy but there will still be that part in me saying "this is still not your thing..." I kept on exploring my skills until God brought me to the "teaching world"... I gave it a shot and the more I do it the more that I want to be better in doing it.

Then I connected the dots of how I got there and I realized that this is just more than a job, it hit me, more than being a coach I am called to be a talent-shaper who is also being molded by the Mastershaper.

I got used to multi tasking that's why I have higher tendencies of

getting out of focus on a particular thing.

So I realized that when God doesn't give me what I want it's not because He doesn't want to bless me but because he wants me focus after all He knows what is best for me.

Moreover as I go down this road I am more convicted to do His will more than mine, to submit my desires as a singer and as a trainer.

I am more convinced that the prayer of my boss years before I started teaching was a match of my prayer to be able to influence lives through talents, certainly it was not a coincidence but divine intervention.

How do we know our calling? It should be aligned with our personal talents and skills but first things first get connected to the Master maker and Master-shaper because Life is more fulfilling, exciting and rewarding when we know our call.

To prepare Kagay-anons for the contest, Smart recently organized a series of Mobile Photography seminars in CDO, with several local photographers from CDO and Iligan.

Froilan Gallardo, an award-winning photojournalist, was one of the speakers in the first run and covered topics on composition and the language of the image. He observes how quickly mobile phone photography has evolved recently.

"From snapshots to breaking news photos, and everywhere in between, mobile phone photography has advanced rapidly in a few short years. The phone camera has become your best camera, because it's always with you."

Bobby Timonera, who will speak on Festival Photography during the second session on August 16, agrees with his Mindanews colleague, and cites the main advantage of the mobile phone camera: “The best camera in the world is the one you have with you. That’s the beauty of the mobile phone.”

for photography. As a photo-blogger, he has this to say, “Mobile photography gave me easier and faster access to social media. I am able to take and share photos even at times when I can’t use a DSLR to do the job.” He shares that in terms of uploads, mobile phones, particularly the iPhone, have now become more popular than DSLRs in the Flickr community. iPhone photography, or iPhoneography, is what wedding photographer Armand Ansaldo will talk about during the second session. “I like shooting with my iPhone because it allows me to instantly share online, beautiful images and what I visually experienced at that moment,” he shares.

Although he has conducted lectures on wedding photography, this is the first time he will speak specifically about iPhoneography.

The last session of the seminar series will be held at Primavera Residences on August 16, 2014, at 2 PM. The seminars were organized to encourage the use of mobile phone cameras for photography and help mobile phone users improve the quality of their photos, especially for the upcoming Festival celebrations.

Classical guitarist to perform at Rodelsa Hall After the successful concerts of violinist Bradley Bascon and pianist Rudolf Golez, another award-winning artist will take the center stage at Rodelsa Hall this coming September 13, 2014, 8pm. Ramoncito “Monching” Carpio, classical guitarist is back in Cagayan de Oro for another special engagement organized by Liceo de Cagayan University, Independent Philippine Art Ventures, Inc. and Philippine Airlines.

In 2012, Carpio won 1st Prize in the Asian International Guitar Competition in Thailand and 2nd Prize in the Taiwan International Guitar Competition. His other awards include 1st Prize in the Philippine International Guitar Competition (2011), 3rd Prize at the Singapore International Guitar Competition (2011), 3rd Prize Bangkok International Guitar Competition (2010) and 2nd Prize at the NAMCYA Guitar Category C held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (2009).

Last year, he released his first solo album entitled “Pahinungod” under Independent Philippine Arts Venture (IPAV). Currently, Monching is a guitar faculty member at the Philippine Women’s University and St. Scholastica’s College. He also writes music for guitar and stage plays.

Internationally-acclaimed piano virtuoso, Rudolf Pelaez Golez, performs the music of one of the geniuses of music, Polish composer Frederic Chopin (1810-1849) through a one-night only concert at the Rodelsa Hall, August 9.

Rodelsa Hall is the Liceo de Cagayan University’s home of the performing arts.

The all-Chopin program of Rudolf Golez featured the great composer’s 24 Etudes, Opus 10 & Opus 25. The first group of twelve etudes in Opus 10 was composed by Chopin while he was in his teens (between 1829 and 1832) and published a year after in France, Germany, and England.

This Opus was dedicated to his good friend and also one of classical music’s greatest, Franz Liszt. The next group of twelve Études of Opus 25 were composed at various times between 1832 and 1836, and were published in the same countries also a year after.

Rudolf Golez is currently finishing his degree in Doctor of Music at the Philippine Women’s University College of Music in Manila, and is currently the Vice President for Cultural Affairs of Liceo de Cagayan University and Dean of College of Music of the same institution.

He recently had a string of successful performances in Manila and Cebu. He collaborated with Taiwan-based Filipino cellist Victor Coo in “Duetto” at the Insular Life Auditorium inAlabang and with Fil-am young Violinist Bradley Bascon in a packed concert at Rodelsa Hall, July 31.

he Higalaay festival is one which shows the rich culture and tradition of the people of Cagayan de Oro. Kagay-anons are known to value friendships and the uncanny hospitality we show towards tourists and new dwellers to the city. The newly revamped festivity which will happen on the 28th of August in honor of the patron saint, St. Augustine, will be the first of its kind the city will see.

The purpose of celebrating fiesta aside from the camaraderie and the fun filled entertainment from events would be to promote and help the city.

In order for foreigners and non Cagayan de Oro people to know and realize what and who the people in the city are, the Higalaay Kagayaan Festival was launched.

XCCA presents ‘Panday Kultura’ Story by STEPHEN J. PEDROZA with additional report and photos from Glenn Palacio

Xavier Center for Culture and the Arts (XCCA) together with the Central Student Government (CSG) presented “Panday Kultura - A Cultural Awareness and Development Symposium for Student Leaders”, August 13 at the Xavier University Little Theater (XULT).

Panday Kultura seeks to promote Filipino cultural understanding that is an integral pillar of sustainable development and governance. It also aims to form responsible, motivated and culturallyaware leaders in the future.

Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) professor and founder of the Integrated Performing Arts Guild (IPAG), Dr Steven Patrick Fernandez presented his lecture to a packed crowd at the XULT. The works of Dr Fernandez, who is also the current IPAG artistic director, has been anchored on cultural development and education and he has been included in the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Encyclopedia of the Arts.

In 2011, Dr Fernandez received the Fr Francisco R Demetrio SJ Award on Culture and the Arts.

schools in the city were present and listened to the points of the lecture. During the discussion, culture was given different definitions by the attending students.

Through various questions and interactions, the participants further developed a sense of how culture has affected their lives.

Culture was defined by Dr Fernandez as “a way or basically our way of living, culture is everything we think and do. Who we are now as individuals is a product of our culture. Our way of thinking and the way we act towards certain conditions, speak or do is the product of culture”.

Dr Fernandez further elaborated that, “culture can influence people in both negative and positive aspects and with that, our leaders and prominent individuals can be of great influence to our culture as well.

If our culture towards how we entertain ourselves, or the way how we see God, or the way how we see time was somewhat reduced to a lower standard. With barrages from TV networks about the latest news in entertainment industry and how political figures go about and do things that were not their job to begin with, our culture has drastically declined. From being one of the best and economically established countries in Asia, we have become nothing more than exporters. We are now the

servers of labor to the more economically stable countries. As future leaders, the younger generations must segregate the good from the bad. Introduce a newer positive perspective in our society.”

Fernandez concludes that “culture does not exist only in museums or textbooks or online articles depicting our history; it did not die when the wars settled and the people of our country emerged from the shackles of ruin and despair and had to traverse to newer challenges in society.

Culture is very much alive today as it was before and it is in our leaders’ hands the responsibility to enrich our culture in all positivity”.

Another upcoming event is “Tuklas Sining – Journey to the 7 Arts in the Philippines” on Aug 16 at XU Little Theatre (XULT). The XCCA, XU-NSTP and the Humanities Cluster of XU Department of English Language and Literature will present Tuklas Sining – Journey to the 7 Arts in the Philippines as Documented by CCP. Tuklas Sining, an enrichment activity for Formation and Humanities, offers documentary essays by various experts of the Philippine Arts, namely, in architecture, theatre, dance, music, literature, film and visual arts.

KUMBIRA: Looking Back, Cooking Forward

he city of Cagayan de Oro has been host for to the longest running culinary show and competition in the country, Kumbira once again highlights the Kagay-an Festival at the Atrium of Limkektai Mall from August 13 to 15, 2014.

Reaching its debutante year, the event has been growing steadily and rapidly the past 18 years of existence. With the support of the local government, COHARA (The Cagayan de Oro Hotel and Restaurant Association),

prominent figures in the respective field of culinary arts and numerous local government units, Kumbira 18 is looking back yet cooking forward.

By sharing the passion, strengths, vision and resources, Kumbira has grown into something which the city of Cagayan de Oro can be proud of every year. Each year is different from the other, organizers agree that the challenges elevate when the celebration draws near.

Through the support of the people of the city and their

In his speech, Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Oscar Moreno proudly exemplified and praised the City and the people of Cagayan de Oro because of another proud moment in our history. Five voters will also be picked to win exclusive invites to a special event on the 25th.

The winner of this year’s Miss Primavera will be announced during the Miss Cagayan de Oro

2014 Coronation Night on August 23 to be held at the Limketkai Center Atrium.
