onster Kitchen Academy continues to dominate Kumbira for the fifth straight year.
After winning the overall championship in the Professional category of the competitions for three straight years (2012-2013-2014), MKA is one year removed from an encore in the student category with its repeat championship in this 20th milestone year of Kumbira, the biggest culinary event and competition outside Metro Manila organized by the Cagayan de Oro Hotel and Restaurant Association (COHARA). “There’s no magic formula,” admits Maggie J. Uy, the other half of the dynamic duo who jointly run MKA and other affiliate food related enterprises. “It’s simply commitment, determination, hard work
and lots of prayers.” “Our hard working team is always up to the challenge for every competition,” Maggie’s hubby Jan says. “From the back room support staff to our competent chef instructors who always make sure that our students are pushed to their limits to perform their very best. More than winning every competition, it’s always the experience, fun, and fellowship that matters in the end.” MKA was top winners in the Chef Wars, My MKA is Overall Student Champion for Kumbira 20. Austria’s World-Renowned Trio 3:0 to perform Sept. 8 at Rodelsa Hall
The renowned Trio 3:0 of Austria will have its first concert tour to Philippines this September at the invitation and with the support of the Austrian Embassy Manila. Besides concerts in Manila and Cagayan de Oro, the group will also conduct master classes in the same venues. The Trio came together as a group in MKA team busy with the award-winning My Own Umami the course of six years, Creation Creamy Monggo Soup with Shrimp Molo coming together to play
in events and then going their separate ways before deciding to come together as The Trio 3:0. They first performed together in 2006 at Salzburg, Austria to celebrate Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s 250th birthday. Eva Steinschaden (violin), Detlef Mielke (piano) and Alexander Vavtar (cello) found themselves performing together for the world première of a chamber
opera, Der Zauberspiegel [The Magic Mirror] by the Austrian composer Ludwig Nussbichler. Although they had never before played as a trio, the three musicians – all of whom had wide experience in all kinds of chamber music – knew each other (Salzburg is a village!), and embraced the project with enthusiasm. The press reported: “A truly splendid conclusion to the 2006
Mozart anniversary. Certainly one of the most unpretentious and lasting contributions to the Mozart celebrations.” After this success, the three went their separate ways, and – musically speaking – lost sight of one another until 2008, when contemporary music brought them together again at the first Salzburg performance of Friedrich Cerha’s Piano Trio (2005), on trio/PAGE 2

Butuan-based artist tours bas relief works in CDO September 5-11, 2016

BUTUAN-based artist Kit Gresos has embarked on a twomonth tour of four of his bas relief works in Cagayan de Oro City. From Capricho Café in July, the aptly-named Handuraw exhibit traveled and stayed at SM City Cagayan de Oro throughout the fiesta month of August. Gresos, a young Mindanaoan visual artist, scenographer and graphics designer, graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Information Technology in Father Saturnino Urios
University in 2015. He has not been in any formal education on visual arts but bringing with him his fondness of mixed media since he was young, he found excitement doing explorations on papier mache where he believed was his first step that served as an eye opener in his artistic world. In 2007, Gresos had his first exhibit on bas relief in Butuan City and was followed by a series of local and national exhibits in Davao, Bukidnon, Manila, Germany, Singapore and Italy along with other artists. In 2013, he first joined the Metrobank Art and Design Excellence (MADE), a national competition on sculpture and ranked as one of the semifinalists all over the Philippines. Currently, he is working as a creative director on a local
station in Butuan City yet still pursues his craft and first love which is art. “I was inspired
by the richness of culture and history in Mindanao for real, as an artists, we are storytellers
too, in my own way. Through arts, I was able to tell people our unspoken culture, our, our epic
historical accounts, our flamboyant tradition that made us Mindanao,” Gresos said.
109 SSS branches to accept LRP applications on all Saturdays of September As part of its 59th Anniversary celebration, the Social Security System (SSS) shall open 109 branches on all Saturdays of September to accept Loan Restructuring Program applications from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm starting on September 3. “We understand that most of our members cannot visit the SSS offices during weekdays given their working schedule so in celebration of our anniversary month, 109 branches will be open on all Saturdays of September to accept LRP applications,” SSS Assistant Vice President for Member Loans Department Boobie Angela A. Ocay said. LRP is open to members with past due loans for at least six months as of April 28, 2016 when the program was launched. Qualified applicants
are those who reside or work in a calamity area as declared by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) or the national government. Under the LRP, penalties are condoned as soon as the outstanding principal and interest of the loan is paid. A total of 54 small, 36 medium, and 19 large SSS branches nationwide were selected to facilitate LRP applications based on their transaction volume. CHANGE: political issues, personal journey, an art exhibit FOR the Oro Arts Guild, a group of local artists in Cagayan de Oro, CHANGE has become a household name, something that everybody aims for since President Rodrigo Duterte came to office and more so, an inspiration for an art exhibit. Every August, the Oro Arts Guild put in their efforts for an art exhibit, in time for city fiesta. This time, they have chosen the word Change because it signifies the changes in the country and of course the change each artist feels in their lives. Oscar Floirendo of Xavier University Center for Culture and Arts (XUCCA) and member of Oro Arts Guild explained that the team has come up with this theme CHANGE this year because this has been a rallying cry for most people who are tired of the status quo. They have identified with these emotions, these undertones. He said not all are pro Duterte in their group and some are with
reservations but when it comes to change they are hopeful that altogether it is for the good. He said there is a positive feeling looking forward to the next years ahead of the administration. And that there will be genuine change, be it government services such as the Land Transportation Office (LTO), those simple things are really felt in the grassroots. Floirendo said we always keep on saying change but we have to start with ourselves. Simple changes can be simply following traffic rules among others. People must also change outlook when it comes to art. He said people should support local artists. He said now the perception is that it’s more valid to buy art in Manila than here. There must be a change in perception by patronizing local artists in your community. Currently, they are 15 in the group; they hope to have new
members soon. Various artworks are displayed in the Museo de Oro of Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan campus in Cagayan de Oro City. Floirendo designed an interactive board game where five balls of different colors representing the five presidentiables in the country and you maneuverer them through a maze going to the top in the white house. Whoever goes first is the President you wish to win. There is also another artwork that shows bloody situation in the country due to extra judicial killings. Another one says DARE with a trashcan underneath which means to dare to throw garbage in its proper bin. There is also one with Pokemon. It means the changes in the youth today and the online world of interactive games. Some would have artwork that says Dream with Care with a flute placed on an art canvass. A good artwork is not too spoon-feeding, says Floirendo. You need to

Further, when it comes to sales, he said being able to sell your art is an offshoot of your passion. It is an added bonus. All artworks in the exhibit are 90% for sale. He said, the Oro Arts Guild go beyond the usual still light and landscape. They have come up with more innovative work of art. He says they are more contemporary. Floirendo said the only constant thing in life is CHANGE. As a group, we want to explore the change, its metamorphosis, the process, political issues, and personal journey, he said. Local artists based in Cagayan de Oro are part of the change and wants to be the change, not just an empty slogan. The situation in Aleppo/Syria appears increasingly hopeless. This civil war is on the brink of its greatest humanitarian disaster. But there’s not much the West can do on its own. The United Nations’ demanding President Duterte to stop Philippines’ non-judicial killings sounds like a cheap joke comparing many other global war places. When the siege around eastern Aleppo was surprisingly broken two weeks ago, there was no notable improvement for the civilian population. The insurgents may have defeated the Assad regime and its Russian protecting power, but in fact up to 300,000 people are still trapped in Aleppo. The supply situation is dire: 1.5 million people have no electricity, no clean drinking water. The biggest humanitarian catastrophe of the Syrian civil war looms. It’s highly appreciated that German Development Minister Gerd Müller
has sounded the alarm, demanding more aid from the EU for the victims of the war. Foreign Minister FrankWalter Steinmeier says it might even become neccessary to set up an “air bridge” to supply the people of Aleppo. What’s the price of idleness? In view of this new dimension of suffering, there’s no doubt that these demands are as important as they are justified. At the same time, they show how limited the West’s options have become to influence current developments. To noticeably ease the besieged population’s hardship, it would take a cease-fire lasting several days, or the end of all fighting - in particular after the creation of safe corridors turned out to be staged by Russia and the Assad regime. Diplomatic appeals won’t be enough to push through such demands. And that’s the dilemma. Put more bluntly: the West’s total failure lies in the fact that decision makers in Washington and Brussels decided
early on not to intervene militarily in Syria, but instead to “let the conflict bleed out,” as one western diplomat so cynically put it. “As international journalist Loay Mudhoon, also reporting for the GermanInternational Deutsche Welle, says: By the time it became clear that Bashar al-Assad’s violent regime had allowing what started as a peaceful revolution to become militarized, and was working to split society along religious lines, the West should have more vigorously supported the opposition in order to prevent radical Islamists from moving into the power void. While Assad received massive backing from Russia, Iran and Shiites in Lebanon and Iraq, the West failed to come up with a joint Syria policy. This inertia, in particular the Obama administration’s watering down of the “red line doctrine” after poison gas was used in the conflict, led to the West’s massive loss of credibility and assertiveness in this

conflict.” So, what should the West do? The question is difficult to answer. It all depends on Vladimir Putin’s political goals. When he intervened a year ago, the Russian president turned the military tide in Assad’s favor: his regime has meanwhile stabilized, also thanks to the Lebanese Hezbollah and Shiite militia. A political solution for the complex proxy war in Syria against Moscow’s wishes appears impossible. Diplomatic appeals won’t be enough to get Putin to relent, as Mudhoon stated in his opinion. As a painter and sculptor, Imao infused traditional
Islamic design with modernist patterns, resulting in vivid works that yearn for local color and the dream of a unified nation. Known for his unique adaptation of traditional Mindanaoan motifs – the ukkil, the naga and the sarimanok, combining all of these with cubism. Imao’s efforts got him the conferment as National Artist for Sculpture in 2006. His son Toym, whose name was inspired from the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Philippines

Regional Anti-Illegal Logging Task Force adopts four resolutions To further deter the occurrence of illegal logging in Northern Mindanao, the Regional Anti-Illegal Logging Task Force (RAILTF) of Region 10 has adopted four resolutions proposed by the provincial task force of Bukidnon during its recent meeting in Cagayan de Oro City.
