Zamboanga Satti adds spice to Kagay-an’s Melting Pot
F
rom its humble beginnings at the Havelano Square near Plaza Divisoria in the 1990s, Cagayan de Oro’s Culinary Adventure Trail has expanded in the past two and a half decades thanks to people from other places who’ve made this City of Golden Friendship their home.
One of those is Concon Ignacio, Maestra Kusinera of St. Ignatius Country Kitchen at Fernhill Street, Macasandig. Hailing from Asia’s Latin City Zamboanga, this compoblanos of mine has been in Kagay-an (as the Lumad Kagay-anons would call their beloved city) for the past two decades and counting.
Starting as a caterer, Concon has gained a loyal clientle with government agencies and high end clients who don’t mind paying a premium for her delicious creations. However, Concon and St. Ignatius Country Kitchen would most probably be best remembered in Cagayan de Oro as the prime
mover responsible for mainstreaming Zamboangueño (or as many insist Chabacano) and Tausug dishes into the Kagay-anon culinary lexicon. For her latest foray, St. Ignatius Country Kitchen started offering Zamboanga Satti-AllYou-Can for only P99 per head with a free Coke Mismo. As Marjorie Bulahan of Filipino Bloggers Worldwide describes it: Satti is the spicy dish popular among locals of Zamboanga. It is the food that perks up your morning. Australian doctors perform free cleft lip surgery By MARK FRANCISCO
FIFTY-seven patients from as far sa Zamboanga Peninsula and neighboring cities and provinces of Cagayan de Oro benefitted the recently concluded Interplast Surgical Mission for cleft lip and palate by the Australian and New Zealand doctors at JR Borja General Hospital in cooperation with the Rotary Club of Cagayan
de Oro. Dr. Kevin Ho, Interplast team leader, said seeing the quality of staff and leadership of JR Borja General Hospital and their motivation to learn and to help people especially the less fortunate ones, encouraged the team to embark into a more challenging task - and that is the transferring of knowledge by training
the local surgeons and nurses of JR Borja Hospital to perform the operations. The team, who performed the operations from September 12 to 21, was composed of two surgeons, one guest physician, two anesthesiologists and two nurses. Now on its 18th year, the Put a Smile project was organized by Interplast Australia, a not-for-profit
organization working to improve the quality of life for people with disability as a result of congenital or acquired medical conditions such as cleft lip palate or burn scar contractures. They do this by sending fully qualified Australian and New Zealand volunteer plastic and reconstructive surgeons, anesthetists and allied health professionals elsewhere in Asia Pacific to provide free surgical
treatment for patients who could otherwise not be able to afford access to such services. Here in Cagayan de Oro, they’ve been hosted since 1998 by the Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro. It is the Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro which coordinates the entire program, helps the visitors identify and screen beneficiaries, provides security and inland transportation and their other needs.
The surgery for a patient usually takes an hour. Such operations cost around P100,000 here in the Philippines or A$20,000 in Australia but Interplast Australia conducts it for free in Cagayan de Oro City. In 2013, Interplast Australia has dispatched 42 missions elsewhere in Asia Pacific – Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Myanmar, Laos, Nepal and other places in the Philippines.
Cebu Pacific takes delivery of first ATR 72-600 High Capacity aircraft The Philippines’ leading carrier, Cebu Pacific Air (PSE: CEB), yesterday took delivery of the very first ATR 72-600 High Capacity aircraft at an event in Toulouse, France. The delivery is the first of a US$673-million order of 16 aircraft that was placed at the 2015 Paris
Airshow, which also includes an option to acquire additional ten more planes. The new ATR 72-600 which will be operated by Cebgo, the wholly owned subsidiary of CEB, features advanced avionics, enhanced performance in hot and high environments and
increased cabin space along with additional seating capacity. The additional seating capacity will help further lower unit seat costs enabling CEB to pass on the benefits through lower fares to its customers. CEB will progressively replace its current fleet
of eight ATR 72-500s – which are configured with 72 seats – with the fleet of 16 new ATR 72-600s, with 78 seats. Deliveries of the ATR 72-600s will run until 2020. The airline is modernizing its fleet with the most popular regional aircraft to substantially expand

XU BSBA studes ready for feasibility study By MARK FRANCISCO
AROUND 70 Business Administration students from Xavier University are almost ready to showcase their feasibility study products and service for the next three semesters. This, after the students were able to successfully complete Mrkmn 3 or Product Development. Divided into 55 groups, the students from five sections all under the tutelage of instructor Tracy June Dy proudly presented their proposed products and services at the SBM Lobby last Wednesday afternoon. Of course, all these proposed products and services were pre-approved by Dy. And boy what a
lineup it would be next semester. There’s gonna be a homemade ice cream made of cucumber. There will also be an all-veggie burger. And there will be choco cake with bits of squash in it. Ain’t that exciting? According to Dy, students were turned into instant chefs since they must propose unique and new products that could compete in the mainstream market. “Since they are taking up this course because they’re aiming to become entrepreneurs, then we are really molding them into one. So I usually ditch proposals which are common enough. The students must be very
innovative,” Dy said. It’s a tall order yet the students are quite enjoying it based on the beaming faces during their Mrkmn 3 culmination. Yet it will be a long way to go. From Mrkmn 3, they will now enter the feasibility stage next semester. Each proposal will be thoroughly scrutinized before the students will be given the go-ahead to implement their respective projects for the next two semesters after that. Then graduation beacons. By then, the BSBA students of Xavier University are ready to become full-fledged entrepeneurs.

established ‘Diyandi Festival’ as its tourism identity or festival brand name. The term Diyandi is an Iliganon word that connotes merriment or celebration. Further, Diyandi is a ritual performed by an all-female group outside the Cathedral during the “Pagpakanaug,” before every novena and before the start of the Komedya, or Comedia de San Miguel, a folk stage play depicting the celestial battle.
“Who was woe? Who has sorrow? Who has contentions? Who has complaints? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes? Those who linger long on the wine, those who go in search of mixed wines? Do not look at the wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it swirls around smoothly; at the last it bites like a serpent, and stings like a viper. Your eyes will see strange things, and your heart will utter perverse words. Yes, you will be like one who lies down in he mist o the sea, or like one, who lies on top of the mast, saying: ‘They have struck me, but I wasn’t hurt; they have beaten me, but I didn’t feel it. When I shall awake, that I may seek another drink!’” (Proverbs 23:29-35). When I recopied this part from my bible I got the idea to write about this topic. The writer of these proverbs expressed very well the
effect of alcohol. Alcohol is, as we all know, a depressant. It slows down the function of all the body’s parts. Vital functions can be slowed down to the point of death. Under its influence people choke to death at family picnics, drown at the beach, fall asleep while driving a car, hurt and even kill other people. The devil alcohol creates a feeling of freedom without worries and euphoria. Our feelings are really free flowing, everyday worries are replaced with a carefree spirit. Wow, I really feel on top of the world today... . I joined the circle of many other fellows around, more or less regular social drinking, and/or habitual drinking with meals (beer or wine!). When I stayed in France, I couldn’t believe that for many Frenchmen a breakfast consists
of bread (baguette), cheese, coffee - and red wine! Anyway, for many of us, social drinking also means occasional drinks to relieve stress or boredom. Once, we reach the addictive stage we are already in danger. Gulping drinks and secret drinking daily to relieve stress makes one lose control, and being unable to stop drinking creates drinking habits, Danger is with us, if we lose control over when, where and how much we drink. The memory blackouts don’t let us remember any more, where we had been or how we get home. We loose our self-respect and the performance of our work is seriously affected. Loss of interest in everything (except in drinking) means loss of jobs, conflicts with the law, mental deterioration, and even death. The sad consequences should let us tremble with fear.

When I came back from New York I had made a deal with God to serve him and give help to those that needed it and share what I have to clothe, to feed and to give the right to freedom and hope. I was walking on the streets and find so many homeless people, hungry and helpless. I talked to them and ask them about their story and they all have a story to tell. The charity that I do now is an inspiration all in the commitment that I have with God and I am willing to serve Him by serving the poor. I have been almost in a 3 year old charity now, with my organization called Hope for the Deprived organization, every Christmas the project is called Give a Gift project. I go to public hospitals by the pedia ward I visit sick kids and basically cheer them up with prayers, toys, books, diapers and milk and just about anything. Last year The Rock Church Ministries of New york has donated 3 boxes of assorted gifts for the children. You cannot imagine how I felt seeing the happiness from their eyes. The parents were so grateful that atleast at one time the pain and worry went away for awhile. The Tahanan ng Kabataan and Boystown has a very good place in my heart I have been helping this kids for quite some time. I receive an invitation from a good friend of mine Alain Pacatan to join the Rotary Club from the west. This club is an internatonal club existed since the 1905 Paul

With a 4 way test of the way we think, say or do. I was totally convinced to joined them when I was recieved warmly by the members. All caliber members with a highclass position in the society. A composition of very humble people with a humble heart. It is family I fit perfectly in very cozy. It has fun and enthusiasm to it. Recently they have put a new project called the Skyhydrant Project. It is a water filtration unit developed by SkyJuice Foundation of Australia, it will convert raw water, source from springs into portable and safe drinking water. The first recipient awarded to is Bayanga,
a little distant from the City proper of Cagayan.It has a population of 2,768 and about 990 household who will benefit from this project and sooner it will become a income generating to the barangay
to be able to sustain and maintain the facility. I was able to witness and was very proud for the turn over of the project to the residenst. I have spoken to the barangay Chairman and he was very pleased that
finally they have safe water to share to the families. They are vey grateful that Balay Mindanaw has chosen them as the recipient and one more for Dansolihon soon and 200 other Shyhydrants will aslo be
given to worthy recipients. To fight and not to heed its wounds, to toil and not seek rest, to labor and not to ask for reward save that doing the will of God. It is a complete commitment that serving others is knowing your purpose I would like to congratulate the Rotary Club West and its members to our President Erna Maagad to Franco Catajoy the project chair and that we set an example that our worth is what good we have given to the world and that we have given hope because the only constant in this world is change. Recently I have just been inducted and now I am full pledge Rotarian of Club West. The Maya Pula should be restored as the Pilipino national bird. Symbols such as these are important, because they represent the heart and soul that drive a nation and its people. Thus, when Fidel Ramos decreed that henceforth, the Philippine Eagle should be the Filipino national bird instead of the lowly Maya Pula, many Filipinos were heartened. Already suffering from a depressed national psyche as the derided The Sick Man of Asia in a sea of roaring Economic Tigers, the Haring Ibon’s appointment was a timely boost to the Pinoy's bruised national garbo. Here, at last, was a symbol every Filipino could be proud of--Pithecopaga jefferyi, last survivor of the fierce raptors of the Dinosaur era, with the second-longest wingspan among the world 's great eagles. Yet, the highf lying Haribon is also symbolic of many things which are not right with our country. It is a solitary patrician, soaring among the lofty mountains where it is rarely seen, beyond the reach of ordinary mortals like you and I. Unlike the small and plebian Maya Pula, it is big, white and proud. Like the multinationals and oligarchs who continue to hold the masses in their grasping claws. In contrast, the black and red Lonchura atricapilla jagori lives close to the ground, humbly sharing its abode with
the small and sundry. The Haribon has a lavish, luxurious lifestyle. It is a predator high in the food chain, preying on lesser animals below it on the social totem pole, and needing an inordinate amount of forest to survive. Compare that to the frugal Maya Pula, contentedly subsisting on the crumbs that eagles and kings casually brush off tables of conspicuous consumption, generously sharing in its poverty the little it has with the members of its f lock. Unlike the Haribon who would die without his forests, the Maya Pala is equally at home in the boondocks and the city, gracefully co-existing in the buildings and rice fields which men build, on what were once its home and playground. The Filipino is neither proud nor patrician. He doesn't need either mansion, car or mistress beyond his simple needs to be happy. He is humble. He is frugal. He is generous. He is a survivor. And it is in being small, dark, and humble that he is strong. We are not Haribon. We are Pinoy. And the Pinoy is a Maya. As the good book says in the Gospel according to St. Mark, chapter ten, verse 31: But many that are first shall be last, and the last first. Let’s put the Maya Pula back into the Pinoy’s heart and soul, where it rightly belongs.
Only one in five business executives is a Digital Leader*, a new study conducted by Oxford Economics and sponsored by SAP SE (NYSE: SAP) shows. A new class of leaders is emerging that embraces a digital mind-set and reports stronger business outcomes as a result. Digital Leaders are more likely to be transparent and to distribute decision making throughout the organization. Prioritize diversity and inclusion: Organizations leading in the digital economy are more likely to see more diversity in the workforce at midlevel management, and have a higher proportion
of female employees than other companies. These companies are also more likely to have diversity programs (46 percent versus 38 percent of all companies), recognize diversity’s positive impact on culture (66 percent versus 37 percent) and equate increased diversity to financial performance (37 percent versus 29 percent). Despite some organizations outperforming their peers in this category, the study found room for improvement among all levels of leadership. Only 39 percent of employees believed their company has effective diversity programs in place, while less than half (49 percent) of executives believe that leadership recognizes the importance of diversity, and has taken steps to develop it.

NGCP exceeds performance targets for 7th straight year
S
ystem operator, NGCP, reports a sustained improvement in its performance for the seventh straight year, after exceeding performance targets set by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC). NGCP’s FOT registered significant improvements in all major island grids in the country. "Frequency of Tripping (FOT) is a key performance indicator which measures the number of times the highvoltage transmission lines tripped or experienced forced outages for every 100 circuit kilometers (ckm)" explained Elizabeth Ladaga, NGCP Northern Mindanao regional communications and public affairs officer. "It’s one of the parameters being used to measure performance." In Luzon grid, FOT decreased by 73% in the
last seven years (from 4.265 in 2009 to 1.1380 in 2016); Visayas grid by 86% over the same period (from 3.6260 to 0.5168); and the Mindanao grid by 67% from 2.6200 to 0.8600. Several system upgrades and facility expansions were implemented to improve System Availability (SA) ratings, which are recorded at 99.5702% for Luzon grid, 99.8013% for Visayas grid, and 99.7320% for Mindanao grid, respectively, in 2016. Luzon grid’s rating this year is higher compared 99.4125% in 2015. The other grids maintained the same ratings posted last year. SA ratings, as a performance indicator, measures the percentage of the entire transmission system available or operating normally during a given period. The Congestion Availability Indicator (ConA), which
measures the congestion experienced by lines identified as critical and whose loss would severely impact Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) operations, reached a positive rating of 99.7209% this year from 99.5830% in 2015. All three grids also reported an almost 100% compliance with voltage and frequency limits. These limits are measured by the percentage of time during a given period that the system frequency or voltage is within the allowable limits. The Luzon grid, particularly, reported 100% Frequency Limit Compliance (FLC) or no frequency violations for the 2015-2016 evaluation period. Visayas grid improved its FLC from 99.8603% last year to 99.8869% this year. Mindanao grid remains stable, with FLC posted at 99.9934% in 2015 and 99.9739% this year. Meanwhile,

the Voltage Limit Compliance (VLC) of all 3 grids retained its 99% rating in 2015, with the Luzon grid at 99.94%, the Visayas grid at 99.96%, and the Mindanao grid at 99.99% for 2016. For frequency, the allowable range is 60 ± 0.3 Hertz (Hz) or 59.7 Hz to 60.3 Hz. Voltage variances are mandated not to exceed ± 5% of the nominal voltage (500kV, 230kV, or 138Kv) per facility particularly during the peak load hours. This means that at peak load hours, a 500kV line should maintain a voltage of 475kV to 525kV, and so on. For Luzon, the highest peak is registered at 2pm.
