Fastest, most luxurious car to enter Philippines

T

he Autohub Group will be introducing the Rolls Royce Wraith in the Philippines this November, Willy Q. Tee Ten (WQT), the company’s President and Dealer Principal, said in an interview made by this paper during his visit in Cagayan de Oro City.

This is considered as the car for the curious, the confident and the bold and reported as the most fastest and luxurious car its manufacturing company Rolls Royce Motor Cars has ever made.

This two-coupe sports car was first presented in England and across Europe two months ago and designed

by Serbian designer Pavle Trpinac .

It will appear with two-door and built around a steel monocoque, with a double front bulkhead – a way to help isolate car occupants from engine noise. Wraith’s form is based on its luxury saloon brother Rolls Royce Ghost.

The wheelbase is 183mm shorter than the latter which has 3,295 mm.

It has a length of 5,268 mm and width of 1,948 mm. It also has a chasing speed hitting 100km/h in just 4.6 seconds despite its 2360 kilograms heft.

as Crème de la Crème, said Tee Ten. It was inaugurated in the Philippines last June 19. It is a very niche market, according to him.

This means that cars are made to satisfy the buyers, the reason it takes a lot of time to be delivered. The cars are usually customized according to customers’ preferences and normally take six months to be delivered.

Buyers of Royce Rolls cars are certainly Captains of Industry. They are also kind of people who wanted to see the fruit of their labor and would like to reward themselves.

Being the official dealer of the cars, he ensured that his company offered the best cars. Autohub Group of Companies is a synergy of automotive dealerships and distributorships which started in 1999 through Ford Makati.

Tee Ten admitted that there are still a lot of room for improvement but he also said that his company substantially boost in the past year and a half. He also believed that if the Philippine Economy will continue to grow, the automotive industry will continue to grow as well.

They also ventured into various regions of Mindanao where the cars Mazda and Ford are the active ones.

The New CdeO Rugby Team A

few months back, my husband woke up one day and realized that he wanted to play rugby.

When he posted on Facebook asking everyone if they know of any rugby team in CDO, you can just imagine the joking replies he got, such as: “Singhot rugby team? Yes they're everywhere!” and “Rugby team, vulca seal team -- take your pick!”

So yes it's funny and those kinds of reactions are to be expected, especially for a basketball-crazy nation such us ours. Sports such as rugby often take the backseat.

Fortunately, one thing led to another and soon enough, he was introduced by like-minded people to a guy named Noel Villa, a rugby aficionado who has just started organizing the new Cagayan de Oro Rugby team, the first ever in CDO. Mr. Noel Villa was born in Manila but grew up in the UK. He spent 27 years there – representing his school and town in rugby, and then working as a personal trainer and Body Conditioning Coach in several gyms in the UK. When he moved back to the Philippines in 2011, he joined the Philippine Rugby Football Union as a Liaison Officer for the Under 18's Asian 5 Tournament in Manila, spending time with the Korean National team.

This rekindled his desire to teach Rugby. Aside from the several Rugby Clinics that he joined both in the UK and Philippines, he's also a medal holder during the Philippine National Games in 7s Rugby last year.

When talking to Mr. Villa, you will most likely realize these two things --- how passionate he is about Rugby, and why the Filipinos should give more focus to the sport. After all, the Philippines already has one of the strongest rugby teams in Asia - the Philippine Volcanoes.

Next to Japan, it's the 2nd most successful team in Asia, belonging to

the Elite Division after winning two consecutive seasons of the Asian 5 Nations Cup. The Philippines is also home to one of the oldest Social Rugby tournament in the world, the Manila 10s, which is currently on its 100th year!

With all these info, one simply can't believe why we haven't been too exposed to this sport. But the new CDO Rugby Team aims to change that.

The team plans to tap into the pool of local talents by recruiting and developing players who will promote the sport in their own different areas.

It also aims to offer a structured program to develop skills among local youngsters.

Aside from fostering camaraderie through sport, the team also wishes to reach out to the less fortunate.

This has already started through their partnership with the Child Protection Brigade Volunteers.

Last week, they visited Boys Town in Lumbia to conduct feeding activities and teach the boys how to play the sport rugby.

The rugby lessons at Boys Town is planned to be a monthly activity, and pretty soon, they'll be engaging in Their advocacy: to better the lives of children through the sport rugby. fund-raising activities (such as selling rugby shirts) in order to provide the kids with their own kits.

As of September 14 the CDO Rugby Some of the pioneer team has already made its debut at the members of the CDO Pelaez Sports Center.

Rugby team sweat it The pioneer members of the team out during practice came together for a few hours of rugby training as well as a fun game of Touch Rugby.

different from each other. Rugby could be best described as a mixture of the contact of American football, the running of soccer, and the transition of basketball.

What are the basic rules in playing rugby union? The game is deceptively simple - you use the ball to score more points than the other team. To do this, you can run with the ball, kick it and pass it, but passing forwards is not allowed. Rugby union is a contact sport, so you can tackle an opponent in order to get the ball, as long as you stay within the rules.

What are the most important rugby lingo you should know?

The scrum – this is the common thing we see where the players of both teams are all bunched up together in a tight pack, pushing forward in that formation.

Tackling – this is when a player knocks over another player to the ground.

Ruck – a huddle of players which is formed after a player has been tackled and must let go of the ball.

J

ust last Friday, Next Moves of Liceo de Cagayan University finally had their moment to own the Rodelsa Hall stage.

Armed with a strong repertoire of modern and pop fusion dance pieces, the premiere dance company showcased their dancing prowess to a mixed audience of young students and professionals.

The hour and a half long concert took the spectators to varied worlds and experiences.

From heartaches of star-crossed lovers, the plight of Typoon Sendong's survivors to the most recent controversies that the country is facing, Next Moves shared to the viewers facets of the Filipino psyche.

In the middle of the program, a merry mixture of hip-hop dances were interspersed to the delight of the younger set.

The usually quiet atmosphere felt during concerts at Rodelsa were noticeably absent that evening as their young fans sighed, laughed, squealed and praised to the impressive numbers.

Choreographed by no less than the main man of dance in Liceo U, Roger Odron, The concert was indeed a well-deserved moment for the group after four years in existence.

It was their first major concert and a good one at that.

They have been to places and have received countless accolades and having the opportunity to cap their four years via a grand spectacle right at their home turf is truly milestone to remember.

As I watched them move to many rhythms that night, I cannot help but smile and become proud that this school-based dance company have really gotten far and they have so much more to offer as they continue to explore new elements, new dance pieces and new themes to share to their audiences in the coming months.

Without batting an eyelash, I can say this group is not just Liceo U's pride but the entire City as well.

Kudos to the young and passionate performers whose energies reverberated the walls of Rodelsa.

I hope they will continue to hone their craft and inspire more young people to join the bandwagon of artistic expression and channel their passion to fuel other people to do the same.

elebrating God’s faithfulness for another year is a great privilege.

Many are now Six feet under the ground but here am I alive and kicking.

Even through busy times I pause shut myself out and reflect of how blessed I am despite the hardships an challenges along the way.

As what the songs says “like a tapestry he’s weaving you and me” even in the not so good times when my why’s are not answered at the moment I rely on His faithfulness no matter what.

At times it’s hard to understand but what keeps me going is His love, His abounding grace and the presence of people who never fails to encourage and remember me no matter where they are in this world.

Material gifts are nice but nothing beats when people give me time, especially when their presence is a surprise.

Second, when others affirm me it gives me the assurance that what I’m doing is right.

Perhaps you are angels sent

by God to give me the courage to make a difference even in the simplest ways.

Kids inspire me to continue studying because somehow they look up to me but God gives me the inner strength and wisdom that I need in every endeavour I face. When I sing for weddings it gives me the joy seeing couples and their love ones happy on their special day.

When friends ask me to join prestigious singing competitions, I tell them it’s not my thing. Perplexed they look at me and I tell them sorry I’m wired to be different even with this gift.

My desire is to compose songs that would bring hope and encouragement to people as to the songs I listen to like Laura Story, Michael English, Kari Jobe, The Heritage singers, etc.

When I listen to them it lifts me up and that’s my desire as well to give others hope and encouragement through music.

Becoming such artist is in His hands. A blessing for the majority is in the making.

In His perfect time.

Artists: Finding Our Place…

I read a facebook post about “exposure”. The kind when start-up artists are offered exposure on events or whatever in exchange for their service.

While this is welcomed among the artist communities, sometimes it goes a little too far – that’s called exploitation, my friends. I am pretty sure you know what I am talking about.

Artists, like normal people, also have bills to pay. Artists welcome free exposure of course, but like I said sometimes it goes a little bit too far – especially when the “client” insults the artist, still artists can take the insult to his personality, what artists can’t and should never take is unnecessary remarks and insults to his work.

Another is when artists do the actual work... in photography for example, when in a photo shoot, the least we can provide for a photographer’s services are food, water, and our utmost and undivided attention for him to accomplish his work – which by the way, he is giving for free. And let us not be so demanding.

The next time we encounter these, let’s be kind to each other and most of all, respect artists.

The Gift of Eyesight

M

an is gifted with five senses, to make life enjoyable, namely: sense of hearing, touch, smell, taste and sight.

And of these senses, surveys have it, that man is most afraid to lose the sense of seeing. William Blake aptly described the eyes as “the window to one’s soul”.

Of the eye problems, refractive errors like myopia (near-sightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism are commonly encountered among the young and middle aged group.

Corrective eye glasses, contact lenses are prescribed in order to improve one’s vision.

Contacts nowadays are used not only to improve vision, but, are also used for aesthetic purposes, what with different colors to enhance one’s looks.

Eye wears likewise have evolved with a two -fold purpose: to make one see better and to make the user look more beautiful and handsome.

Correcting the problem of focus in order to see has also come a long way in terms of technology.

We get to hear patients’ mention of a LASER Treatment of their eye problem.

Laser for refractive errors actually refers to either LASIK (Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) or PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy).

Both procedures last less than an hour (approximately 15 minutes per eye). LASIK requires the creation of a corneal flap through the use of a micro-keratome or intralaser, so that light can be properly focused on the retina.

A corneal flap is not done with PRK. A pre- operative evaluation is a MUST- thus; I would say that seeing your Ophthalmologist is the first step prior to deciding if you should go through the procedure.

A thorough medical history ( in order to gather past and present illnesses like Diabetes, Hypertension, Allergies , drug intake and other pertinent data ) and eye evaluation that will include the intra-ocular pressure, diameter, degree of dryness are performed.

One’s lifestyle is likewise an important factor that is consideredlike, if the patient spends so much time in front of the computer, or is into sports, or whose main livelihood is the use of the microscope.

It is during the check up that all these things are taken into consideration. The procedures per se are quick, effective, with minor to no discomfort post-operatively.

Of course, it may vary from patient to patient, with some having no discomfort at all. Improved vision is experienced immediately or within a

week’s time.

Who may avail of the procedure?

Just like other surgical treatments, there are certain criteria that must be met in order to ensure its success: candidates must be 18 years or above.

The rationale is that, at this age, refraction is stable. Patient must have no infection or eye injury, with normal ocular health.

On top of this, the patient who opts to go through either LASIK or PRK (which is determined by the Ophthalmologist based on his assessment, he/she must have realistic expectations regarding the result of the procedure.

In all my articles, I always include in the discussion, complications that can possibly arise from the procedure.

LASIK and PRK are no exemptions: a patient may feel more discomfort, dryness of eyes, glaring, and even loss of vision.

So far, though, if one were to review the statistics, success rates of these procedures is very high!

In choosing to undertake the procedure to correct your vision, see the eye specialist that you can be comfortable with, discussing your options, and guiding you through the technicalities.

Trust and faith are as important as expertise.

Game Review: ZOMBY BIRDY

ere’s an interesting twist to the hugely successful Angry Birds franchise: what if the birds weren’t just angry; what if they are in fact ZOMBIES who are out to eat the poor pigs?

This is the angle that the Zomby Birdy game built its premise on. While some might dismiss it as just another Angry Birds spin-off, those who get past that label and trudge on to play this parody game would be pleasantly surprised. I know I was!

So here’s a quick background: What It is: It’s a fun Physics game which can be played at gamesonly.com. The object of the game is deceptively simple: all you have to do is protect the pigs.

It is, however, not as easy as you are initially led to think. You can use objects provided for each level to make zombie-proof pig pens by dragging these items using your mouse. Objects and pigs vary in each level, making for an exciting gameplay.

The Result: The game starts with a cute story about an unfortunate little worm who happened to eat zombie flesh before getting eaten by a bird. The bird who digested the infected worm turned into a zombie bird who craves pig brains more than anything else.

one of his own. He tinkered with different game ideas until all of a sudden it dawned on him that the reason why the birds are so adamant to get past numerous obstacles just to get to the pigs could be because they are infected zombies. After all, what other creatures could have that kind of dogged determination? Yep you guessed it: zombies.

It’s quite an interesting way of looking at it actually. After all, everything is about perspective, right? Take Super Mario for example. When you look at it from another angle, Mario is more or less a havoc-wreaking terrorist.

So back to Zomby Birdy. The clever storyline isn’t its best part. And no it isn’t the funny pigs either, or the varied objects per level. The best part is that it is challenging enough without being frustratingly difficult.

It’s something cerebral that you can do on your free time which doesn’t make you pull your hair out in extreme frustration and self-directed disappointment.

The Verdict: Though I’m not really the target market for online puzzle games, I was quite delighted when I played this one. I have gotten over Angry Birds several versions ago (and before it all erupted into one crazy money-making franchise) and the only remaining puzzle game I play in my android device has something to do with a stupid cat that needs saving.

Nevertheless, I was in for a surprise when I came across this game. It is enjoyable but not too time-consuming. It is perfect for those times when you just want to kick off your shoes, let your hair down and enjoy an online puzzle.

The Rating: 4 out of 5. It’s a game that is teeming with potentials. The good news is, there’s a remake coming up.

May 22 – The Return Journey Down Via the “Kipadawan Trail”

A

t 6:00 a.m. it was time to get up. I went out of the tent and as I was body-stretching in the open field I could see the morning sun peeping through the trees on the mountain range, subtly rising, its golden face glowing. A few meters away where I stood was “Lake Venado” lying placidly, as if in deep slumber, amidst the cool tranquility of the Apo mountain.

When the rest of Apo 8 was up and about, we stood on the open field gazing at the peak far beyond and admiring all that we could see around, nature at its best.

We felt good and proud for having dared to take the journey to meet the Great Apo, like a treasure hunt. We got the treasure we sought -- majestic, lordly, truly a wonder of God’s creation like Mount Everest, Mount Kitanglad, Fuji, Mayon, Kilimanjaro and others.

No human creation or invention can ever surpass God’s greatness. Thank you, O Lord, for the mountains and hills, and land, water, the ocean, rivers, streams and the creatures that abound in them.

They are your gifts to mankind for all people to use and enjoy. Please, Good Lord, help us to take good care of them, and to love them as you love all of us your creatures on earth.

After breakfast, we began our trek down with eagerness to end our adventure and be home. We returned via the “Kidapawan Trail” on the Cotabato side. It was rainy most of the way, and we hiked down through thick cool forest along narrow winding slippery trails of wet grounds, mud, rocks, roots, deep ravines and gullies.

We crossed a few running streams and also a sizeable river a few times over along the winding trail, crossing it on slippery bamboo bridges one or two persons at a time. We did not expect the going to be that difficult, but we found out the hard way.

We elderly climbers felt it even more. Our legs and knees were struggling and hurting, and occasionally we were uttering sounds of pain (not of complain). But

the trail was really interesting and full of the beauty of nature.

We finally got to the “foot” of Mount Apo and there in a wooded resting area we took our last lunch break.

Then we continued on our journey following a trail that snaked through wooded plains and some gentle rolls.

We were told that the steep ravines and gullies were behind us. With a sigh of relief we quickened our pace until we reached a small hill.

Kookie said: “That will be the concluding climb. We are almost done. At the top, on the other side of that hill, is the provincial road.” It was quite a steep climb which we had to do by stages to catch our breaths.

On the way up we could see on the hillsides some hot springs smoking. We finally got to the Kidapawan highway, and with another half-a-kilometer walk, we saw a sign: “Mount Apo National Park Welcome Center”, and nearby the “Agko Mountain Resort”.

We paid the entrance fees and got ourselves a table.

It was 3:15 p.m., and time for an initial celebration -- some bottles of cold San Miguel beer to drink, some snacks to eat, a refreshing dip and swim in the cold

Post Script: In an article by Fr. Miguel A. Bernad, SJ, “The Ascent of Mount Apo”, (Reference: The Great Island: Studies in the Exploration and Evangelization of Mindanao, Ateneo de Manila University Press, 2004), he wrote a historical account of the early explorations of Mount Apo. The following is a brief outline: •1852 - A tragic, fatal and failed attempt by Jose Oyanguren and

party.

•1870 – A Second attempt but another defeat to make it to the summit of Mount Apo by the Davao District Commander Real.

•6th to 10th October 1880 – Conquest of Mount Apo by Don Joaquin Rajal y Larre with an expedition party of Filipinos, Spaniards and one Frenchman including Fr. Mateo Gisbert SJ, Dr. Joseph Montano and some Bagobos as escorts.

•1881-1882 – The

•1888 – The Jesuit (Manila Observatory) Expedition headed by Fr. Martin Juan SJ and Fr. John Doyle SJ with Visayan and Bagobo escorts.

•1892 – Fr. Eusbeio Barrado SJ explored the low areas of Mount Apo up to some 2,000 feet high from the Kabacan, Cotabato approach crossing the mountain to the Davao side, giving valuable information

pool, and an envigorating immersion in the therapeutic hot pool of natural hot spring water. A rewarding day it was!

At 5:00 p.m. we boarded the “autovan”, first a brief stop in Kidapawan City to pay a visit at the Provincial Tourism Office before proceeding to Davao City.

Two hours later, we arrived at the home of Atty.

Jun and Charito Calamba (my brother-in-law and sister, parents of Victor). A “welcome party” was eagerly waiting for us – Tita Perrine Bernad, Jun and Charito, Celeste (my darling wife), Charieze (wife of Paolo), Martina Andrea “Aya” (daughter of Paolo and Charieze), and “Jay” (my eldest son).

A round of hugs and kisses welcomed us happily and warmly, followed by a toast for a successful adventure.

It was very timely that the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary visited the home of Jun and Charito. What more could we ever ask, a grace of a presence by no less than our Blessed Mother!

And so, we prayed to thank her and the Good Lord for such a great blessing. Then, we went to a restaurant for a good dinner.

•Early 20th Century Expeditions (1900-1941) – some ten expeditions to Mount Apo and its areas: - Phelps Whitmarsh (an American correspondent) with Lt. C.O. Thomas.

- Warren D. Smith’s (1907-1908) expedition that was attributed to have given the official figure of Mount Apo’s height at 9,690 feet (2594 meters).

•1928 – Gutierrez-Bruns Expedition from the

Cotabato side.

•1939 – The Napan Trail of the 76,900 hectares Reserved Forest and National Park was established and described in detail by Ranger Rufino A. Sabado.

•1941 – The Ateneo de Cagayan Ascent headed

by Fr. Theodore E. Daigler SJ accompanied by three students and some Manobo guides.

•Post World War II Attempts: 1948 – Charles H. Wharton; 1950 – a party of five Americans

(one a woman) ascended by the Cotabato trail; Fr. Franciso Claver SJ climbed the mountain three different times.

•11th April 1958 – First Holy Mass ever celebrated at the summit of Mount Apo by Fr. Miguel A. Bernad SJ, and the second Mass offered by Fr. Rodolfo Malasmas SJ attended by the expedition party that included Thomas Fitzpatrick SJ, Rodolfo Villarica, etc. and some Manobos.

Soekarno Hatta International Airport in Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia is a 3-hour plane ride from Manila. An 8-hour butt crunching locomotive ride from Jakarta’s central train station Gambir to Yogyakarta and finally, an hour from Yogyakarta is Candi Borobodur, Alas! a Buddhist Temple dating from the 8th century surrounded by active volcanoes… and yes, the view is worth your 12-hour sitting time!

Vocabulary: Candi is an Indonesian term for ancient temples or ancient archeological structures, either Buddhist or Hindu mostly built during the 8th to 15th centuries.

Borobodur temple I am a Millionaire… seriously? Well, for lack of a better word, “everybody” is a millionaire in Indonesia just like in other South East Asian Countries. Your allowable travel budget of 24,000.00 Philippine peso is equivalent to 6,206,746.22 MILLION Indonesian Rupiah! If you plan to launder money worth 4 million Pesos, then you are a 1 Billion Money Launderer!

Sadly, as I went to the bank in Jogjakarta, the teller told me that by 2014, “travellers” and locals alike are no longer Millionaires in their country because the Government will cancel the remaining zeros by then. So if I were you, I would travel NOW to experience the life of a Millionaire!

While I was living my Millionaire life in Borobodur, I found out that Yogyakarta or “Jog ja” is the second most visited destination in Indonesia and the rally point of the famous World UNESCO Heritage sites. The 9th Century Old Borobudur, one of the world’s most ancient wonders! Bali Island is the choice for common Tou r ists, but Travellers prefer Borobodur, a one-hour drive from Yogyakarta. An hour drive from Borobodur

is a Hindu Temple, the Prambanan Candi which is the largest Hindu temple in Indonesia.

A v i sit t o Jog ja i s never complete without experiencing the city’s one kilometer stretch main tourist street, the Malioboro Street.

A really straight street where you can find anything and everything from street foods, bars, inns and keeps, batik, jewelry, and horse joyrides or becak (pedicab) ride. I also found out that the handdyed cotton and silk garment known as Batik clothing was acknowledged by UNESCO as Indonesian heritage, which origins are said to be traced from Yogyakarta.

run dubbed as Mapawa Nature and Adventure Park Mountain Trail Marathon will be held this October 27, 2013 at Sitio Malasag, Cugman, Cagayan de Oro City.

This is through the initiative of Three Travellers CDO Inc., a nonprofit organization in partnership with Emmanuel N. Pelaez Ranch Inc. and Mapawa Nature and Adventure Park.

The run will showcase the lush forest and greenery found within the vicinity of Mapawa Nature and Adventure Park and Emmanuel N. Pelaez Ranch.

According to the race organizer, Dr. Riyadh S. Balbontin, this run aims to create environmental awareness and appreciation of the importance of nature among the participants.

In addition, a portion of

the registration fee will be donated to Mapawa Nature and Adventure Park for reforestation maintenance.

There are three categories of the run: the 5K, 21K and 42K. 5K has a registration fee of P400. This include the runner's jersey.

21K's fee is P600 which include jersey, finisher's medal and finisher's shirt.

Registration fee for 42K is P1000. This include jersey, finisher's medal and shirt.

The registration period is until September 27, 2013. Registration centers include Mapawa Booking Office located at second floor KABI building, J. Serina Street, across Madonna and Child Hospital at Carmen, Cagayan de Oro City. It will open for registration from Mondays to
