Ryan Cayabyab promotes Akapela Open and Philpop to Oro Studes

aestro Ryan Cayabyan was in Cagayan de Oro recently to drum up local participants for the 1st Akapela Open and 3rd Philippine Popular Music Festival, better known as Philpop.

Mr. Cayabyab has created chart-topping OPM pop songs and has contributed his craft to notable theater musicals, movie scores, full-length ballets. He has also created choral and orchestral pieces. Currently he is the Executive Director of the Philpop Musicfest Foundation, the group behind the Philippine Popular Music Festival, a songwriting competition for amateur and professional Filipino composers that seeks to help elevate the Philippine Music industry.

Three local choral ensembles and hundreds of other students joined the seminar-workshop “Troubleshooting for A Capella, Arranging and Performance” which was conducted free of charge at the Conference Hall of Capitol University last Sept.

It is a project spearheaded

by The Music School of Ryan Cayabyab in cooperation with the PLDT Smart Foundation and One Meralco Foundation.

Mr. Cayabyab, who is fondly known as “Mr. C” to his friends and admirers, said the 1st Akapela Open aims to promote contemporary a capella singing and the appreciation for vocal harmony performance.

“We want to provide a venue for new arrangements of Philippine and international contemporary vocal music as well as provide growth experiences for singers and arrangers. In this way, we can cultivate a community of contemporary a cappella singers.”

The 1st Akapela Open has four levels of competition including the uploading of videos, live auditions, semi-finals and the finals on October 30 at the Meralco Theatre in Manila. The contest is open to a cappella singing ensembles whose members are aged eighteen (18) years old and above with a minimum of three (3) to a maximum of twelve (12) singers. TXS kicks off 3rd season with tragedy and mystery

S

hocking the audience with an unexpected display of chills and thrills, The Xavier Stage (TXS) opened its third Theatre Season entitled “Realizing Shakespeare” on September 4, 2013 at the XU Little Theater.

The theatre company’s third set of productions for this academic year will feature three adaptations of iconic playwright William Shakespeare’s works: “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “Titus Andronicus,” and “Hamlet.”

Though Shakespeare fans may expect completely faithful versions in the playwright’s trademark language, the productions will be unique interpretations of the original plays.

“A Midsummer Night’s Dream” will be based on the adaptation by the Sining Kambayoka Ensemble of MSU Marawi. It will be performed in Cebuano and set in pre-Islamic Maranao, fusing the local lore among the Maranao and the exciting plot of Shakespeare. It will premiere on September 21 and run until September 27 at the XU Little Theater.

“Titus Andronicus” and “Hamlet” will be presented in Filipino as adapted by Layeta Bucoy and will involve politics; the former on political clan wars, the latter on political dynasties. “Titus Andronicus” will be staged on December 4 to 7 while “Hamlet” will be presented on February 24 to 28, 2014.

“We chose Shakespeare because of timeless themes that have truths even in our world today,” explains Mr. Hobart Savior, Creative Director of TXS and Director of the Xavier Center for Culture and the Arts.

“His plays defined the immortal tragedies and the perfect philosophy of life, [as well as] its ironies and collocations… The Xavier Stage would like to embark on engaging with theatre as a craft through the paradigms of Shakespeare, who somehow alluded and presented man and his life through tragedies and comedies of errors.”

TXS is a repertory theatre company of the University that mounts educational productions and promotes Filipino culture and the arts in contribution to the development of Philippine theatre.

It is a take-off from the previous “My City My SM” campaign, which promotes tourism and “My City, My SM, My Cuisine,” which highlights culinary specialties in its host cities.

The project helps promote the best of the best crafts, as well as OTOP program in SM’s host cities, preserve dying crafts through workshops and contests, and provide opportunities for livelihood.

The “Selfiesteem” Inspiration continues

S

elfies are so in today that the term is now part of the Oxford Dictionary Online and is defined as "a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website." So who’s not guilty of a selfie? I myself have taken a few and posted it online but realized I might be sharing one too many.

These days, we do not necessarily need another person to help us take portraits, we can do it ourselves.

But then again, posting too much selfies on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram is sometimes frowned upon and considered to be caused by low morale and a dire need for appreciation by peers and online friends.

Others find it necessary to get the approval of others to make themselves feel valued and then dive into frustration if what they posted did not illicit the kind of reaction they expected.

Some have gone to lengths of posting selfies from the moment they wake up to the time they are about to doze off.

It is okay and cute for a while but it can flood newsfeeds with nothing much but similar faces and becomes a bit bothersome.

I personally have nothing much against selfies but there must be selfcontrol on the kind of pics posted and how these might send the wrong signals to people on the net. Also, provocative selfies the kind where upper torsos are bare and supposedly

private parts are almost revealed are in the risks of being copied and posted elsewhere.

You don’t want to see a photo of you on an adult site without permission, right? Instances are no longer rare where people cry foul upon learning that their pics are posted without permission and used to scam other people through fake user accounts.

Selfies are intended to let us capture moments when there’s no one else to take the photo for us but it does not mean we abuse this mode of picture taking to the point of madness.

I think it would be best that the subject of our digital photographs are a varied mix of the people around us and the moments that mean so much to us.

A Facebook album or Instagram posts look so much greater if it comes with a lot of elements - Stuff that you can share to the whole world and not necessarily your face but photos that speak so much of your personalities and interests.

Then there’s this growing online ridicule about men taking selfies. They brand them as narcissistic and utterly obsessed with their own looks.

They are the new Johnny Bravos.

The kind of guys who are so full of themselves and nothing more.

These selfie critics think that this picture-taking style is only for women.

I guess there are no rules that dictate such biases but if you ask me, men or women should just chill and take selfies moderately. We don’t need the virtual world’s “likes” to make us feel better about ourselves.

I

t was not so long ago when I started trying to compose a song, of which it turned out to be a school jingle. I remember the feeling of being amazed because I can actually compose a song.

This is one of the main reasons why I wanted to improve my skills in music technically.

Aside from enrolling myself in an online school for music, I am also privileged to join seminars and workshops relating to the field and attitude training.

Few days ago I was one of the participants of the Ryan Cayabyab Workshop for Two days.

Day one was all about Acapella Singing as a group. The ideas that he shared were not new to me but he gave a fresh view on some of the technicalities in singing like putting colour in music.

As singers we are also like painters that we need to put colour on our songs. How? Through the way we deliver each line of a song.

Putting a “counterpoint” aside from the harmony is also a good option to add flavour for acapella singing.

When day Two came, I was more excited to hear from him speaking on another topic that is “song writing”.

Though at first I was in a dilemma since I’ll be absent again from work, but my inner hunger to

learn more won me over.

True enough it was worth it, I didn’t only learn from the maestro but likewise inspired by him and the other composers that were with him who were actually the finalists of Philpop Music Festival 2013.

The seminar workshop was so engaging and at the same time fun.

When we were asked to do an activity to compose some of the answers were just hilarious somewhat like “ang nanay ko ay tao – bumili ng aso sa kanto – ako ay gwapo”... the speaker kept on laughing and even the audience laughed more.

Aside from the fun the other composers also sang their compositions and somewhat gave an inspiration by telling us the stories behind their songs and how they became the composer that they are now.

Truly it was an encouraging Two day seminar workshop with the maestro, but perhaps it all boils down to practice and discipline for without such, talent is really never enough.

A mediocre teacher tells, a good teacher explains, a great teacher illustrates but an excellent teacher inspires. Thank you Mr. C and more power to PCDA (Philippine Choral Directors Association) and Philpop!

Arts, Culture and Crafts… alive and well in CdeO

In the past two weeks, I have been treated to arts, culture and crafts.

The My City, My SM, My Crafts launch in September 9, showcased the best of the best in the crafts industry here in CdeO and Misamis Oriental.

The Maestro Ryan Cayabyab came over to give Kagay-anon musicians and students a workshop on songwriting and launched Akapela Open and Philpop to us.

The Xavier Stage kicks off their 3rd season with an adaptation of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”.

The best part of course involved learning from all these experiences.

In the coming months, CdeO will have a glimpse of various cultures and their arts. In October, CineEuropa will once again fill the Rodelsa Hall with European films and give us a look-

see of their cultures and the craft of filmmaking.

On a local note, December will be the deadline for the submission of entries to the 6th CineMagis Digital Short Film Festival in Northern Mindanao and January of 2014 will be the festival proper.

Our local art scene has never failed to showcase CdeO in various forms of visual, musical, and literary brilliance, either through exhibits or the pork barrel rallies.

One thing is for sure Arts, Culture and Crafts are alive and well in CdeO. Live Life, Passionately!

There are instances where the endorsers of the products are medical doctors, and I would say, that there is nothing wrong with that. Provided that, they forget not their Hippocratic oath “ primum non nocere “ ( FIRST, DO NO HARM ).

It is good practice for our friends in the field, that, before accepting any products that they will be endorsing, that they must go back to the basics: the products must have undergone rigorous scientific testing, which means clinical trials and extensive laboratory testing has been performed, in order for the study design to be conclusive.

A Doctor endorser is very powerful in convincing people to taking in the supplements and other products, thus, it makes the endorser more conscious in his/her statements regarding the product.

It is also to the patient’s good; if, he/she is advised to continue on with their current medications and not to miss his/her follow up with his/her

I would always remember one beloved professor in medical school where he would share with us, upcoming physicians, to respect the wishes of our patients.

With respect comes the responsibility to give the different options and explaining their benefits and disadvantages.

My suggestions to the user on one hand are very simple. Use only products that have a proven efficacy like vitamins, iron, iodine and fish oils. Beware of marketing products as “CURE “more so if it is endorsed as a “MIRACLE CURE “. Learn to

think for yourself.

It doesn’t mean that, if it worked for your neighbor or friend that it will be good for you too.

More so, if you have an underlying illness. It is to your best interest to do your own research on the product as well as its components.

Discussing it with your attending Doctor, will help you and your Doctor to check if the supplement you want to take or is already taking in, has no adverse reactions with your current medications, as there is such a thing as adverse drug interactions.

And, whether endorser, producer, consumer or even as the attending physician, a wholistic approach to health is never moot and academic.

This approach is timeless and will always withstand the tests of time.

Eating right, exercise, abstinence from unhealthy practices like smoking and drinking alcoholic beverages, managing the day to day stresses and yes, feeding one’s soul, will help you in keeping that health and young looking face, more than all the supplements available in this world.

For after all, supplements are supposed to be just…. To add on or enhance, not to replace.

6. TURN TO YOUR SUPPORT SYSTEM. No matter how alone we sometimes feel, we never are. Enrich your spiritual life and find comfort in knowing that there is a Higher Power that you can turn to for help and guidance. And of course, there's your family and friends to always back you up no matter what.

Sounds ultimately sad and dreary, I know. But honestly, it wasn’t. Being single is all the time you need to do so many things! Such as: 1. DATE. You’re free as a bird, you can scope the menscape (or womenscape) and choose, choose, choose! The selection process can be quite a grueling task though, with all the jerks that seem to run loose everywhere. So pick carefully.

There’s no need to rush.

You need not settle with the least douchebag of them all. There’s bound to be one who is just right.

And he or she is worth the wait, and will be everything you ever wanted.

That person will find you sooner or later. But while waiting, you can look around, meet people and have pure clean fun.

2. IMPROVE. There’s so much free time when you’re single, no doubt about that. You can fill those hours with endless pursuits. Enrich your mind: READ voraciously.

Watch meaningful movies. Check out theaters and plays. Take classes.

Get an MBA or something. Try a new hobby. Travel! The options are absolutely endless. But for Pete’s sake, don’t limit yourself to just Facebook and TV because your brain cells might eventually commit suicide due to neglect. Feed your brains, discover your hidden talents, be someone you could be proud of.

Be someone ANYONE could be proud of.

3. REFLECT. Alone time gives you plenty of opportunities to think

Get to know yourself more and find out exactly what you want out of life and love. By the time The One finally shows up, you’ll know how to handle it and turn it into the fantastic relationship that you’ve been waiting for for ages. When you’re single, you have all the time to take care of your health and your looks. Grab that chance to live a healthy lifestyle and strive to bring that habit into your future relationship.

5. HAVE FUN. Surround yourself with positive, upbeat and wonderful people who will pick you up instead of pulling you down. Choose the company you keep and find the ones you could open up your heart and soul to, without worrying if you’ll come across as a pathetic loser.

7. HELP OTHERS. Giving back to the community can be done anytime – whether you are single or attached, young or old, married or unmarried.

But when you're single, you have decidedly more time to pursue these activities.

It could be helping out build homes and shelters for the less fortunate, saving the environment, tutoring street kids, or whatever advocacy tugs at your heartstrings. Do your share in making the world a little bit better. In the process, you'll make yourself a lot better too.

8. WORK ON YOUR GOALS. Your ambitions take a lot of effort, time, and focus. Fortunately, there's plenty of that when you're not yet busy going out on dates or devising ways to make your BF/GF/husband/ wife happy. But remember to always balance your time between 'living your life' and 'making a living'.

9. LOVE YOURSELF. If you don’t, how can you honestly expect people to love you? Be good to yourself, cut yourself some slack. Be happy, be positive, and exude that zest for life that would make people gravitate towards you.

Remember: You are what you think and feel you are. If you think you’re irresistible then you’re absolutely right!

Being single is being free. Free to be you, free to do whatever it is you have to do. Seize that chance. Milk that opportunity. When the time comes that you’ll find yourself half of a solid duo, wouldn’t it be great to not miss out or regret anything? Your future partner will thank you for it.

he Cagayan de Oro city government booth won first place, in the city category, during the recently held Philippine Travel Mart at SM Mall of Asia on September 6-8, 2013.

The booth, focusing the city’s white water rafting adventure as the country’s water rafting capital, drew attention as tourism destination in the country besting 100 other booths nationwide.

It also showcased Mapawa Nature Park’s river trek and canyoneering adventure package which concept and design was executed

Second of Three Parts

May 21, 2013 The Second Day: Getting to the Peak The Ascent It was 5:30 early morning that we began to rise up, and the shameful episode of last night was still the main topic of conversation, with laughter and accusations about who the shameless culprit was.

No one would dare to admit.

However, the “suspect” was obvious, because it showed in the innocent-looking smile on his face. After breakfast and packing, we gathered for a moment of prayer – to give thanks to the Good Lord, to ask for His protection from harm and trouble, and to seek for His help, guidance and graces that we could make this adventure to the end without any problem. We also invoked the help of our Holy Mother Mary and the angels and saints for their support and guidance.

We were blessed with pleasant sunny weather that combined with the cool mountain air as we resumed our hike clumbering up the wooded trails. We reached the open hilly terrain of volcanic rocks and boulders, no trees, and the whole place opened up brightly -- the vast blue sky above us with patches of white clouds hanging over and passing slowly by with their shadows moving along the picturesque verdant hills.

We could feel the touch of the fresh wholesome air getting cooler.

We were at the “foot” of Mount Apo. Looking up at about 80-degree angle, we could see Apo’s head – so near and yet still so far to reach. Not

far from where we rested on top of boulders we observed the solfataras (sulfur vents) continually spewing sulfuric smoke. We had to cover our mouth and noses to avoid breathing-in the unpleasnt fumes that made us cough. It was a good thing the breeze was blowing the fumes away from us. Recalling the incident of last night, if the sulfuric fumes were unpleasantly making us cough, the “sound of silence” was giddying.

We loitered for awhile to admire the gorgeous view, then we resumed our climb, hopping from one boulder to the other, crawling and sliding on our buttocks, securing every step of the way up until we reached a small plain that gave us a brief break from the rocky terrain. We made slow but steady progress in our ascent, making it to the “knees” of Mount Apo. Lo and behold, just ahead of us we saw a vertical cliff (about 87-degree steep). Kookie said: “We are going there. We will climb that to get to the peak of Apo.” We were speechless for a moment totally surprised and terrified! The cliff looked very scary. We looked at each other and deep within me (the others too) felt like whatever bravery we still possessed started to melt down like ice in a heated pan.

In thought we were asking ourselves – “It looks impossible and suicidal with no safety ropes and crash helmets, can we do it?” Kookie assured us saying: “It looks difficult, but there is a narrow trail

going up. You can do it. Just be extra careful particularly with loose rocks.” Even with that we could not get rid of our fears. But, there was no backing out. We swallowed our fears and began our assault towards the objective. We took the cliff very cautiously, securing every single step up the narrow zigzagging trail, holding firmly to anything firm, balancing our bodies with great care, and putting extra focus on loose pebbles, rocks, roots, whatever that could cause slips. Anything that fell would endanger the climbers below. I prayed a

lot on my way up. We got to the top alright! Incredible, thank God! At the top plateau was a shallow pond called “Dead Lake”. Paolo’s altimter registered 2600 meters at this point.

There we laid down our packs and took a break to catch some breath.

After a few minutes, we resumed our assault and we reached the peak, called “Davao Peak” (the altimeter reading was 2750 meters). This was one of a few highest peaks of Mount Apo (we were told).

This was the Apo that dared to challenge us – “I am here,

come, reach me!” We arrived at the peak at 1:00 o’clock p.m., a good four-hour-twentyminute trek from the time we began at 8:40 a.m. Kookie remarked that our pace was fast compared to other climbers he had previously guided.

Well, that was a compliment that made our heads swell somewhat after just going through the difficult, tiring, scary experience.

The Davao Peak was just a small space of flat terrain perhaps no more than 100 square meters bounded by the surrounding ledges. The view at the peak was panoramic,

The Descent towards “Lake Venado” – Camp 2 After that good lunch, the younger climbers (Nom-nom, Paolo, Francis, and Victor), noticing that the sky had cleared of clouds, made an extra climb up to “GenSan Peak” (2770 meters) to see the magnificent view from that vantage point. Meantime, the elderly (Mike, Lito and me, B-boy joining) began our trek down. It was a slow difficult descent along steep gorges, gullies, slippery trails of grasses, mud, rocks, roots, rotting leaves, decaying branches and fallen trees.

Our walking staffs were a

great help, like our third leg or extended hand. Even with that, we all had some falls and slips, at times flat down on our bottoms, and in some places with bottomsup. One consolation in our descent was hiking under the cool forest cover shielding us from the bright hot sun.

We r e a c h e d “ L a k e Venado” (our Camp 2) at 5:40 p.m. with great relief, in good time (just before dark) and in pleasant weather. The cool air prevailed. The whole day’s journey from Camp 1 to the peak and down to Camp 2 took nine (9) hours.

We took some pictures before descending to an open flat terrain to have our lunch at 1:45 p.m. Again, Kookie prepared a delicious lunch for us (fried gizzards, sautéed noodles mixed with vegetables, and rice). Nearby, atop a huge boulder, was a grotto of the Immaculate Conception and the Infant Jesus, and a cross above.

Not far from the grotto was a small flowing spring, cool, clean and refreshing to drink.

But, we were happy and grateful for having reached our objective without harm or accident and in pretty good condition.

We set up our tents, unpacked and settled down.

It was time to relax and have some fun to relish our accomplishment. We helped ourselves to tanduay rhum, orange juice, some fried bananas, hot coffee and tea as we chatted and shared some jokes and laughs until 7:00 p.m. We looked forward to a good dinner, and good dinner we had (hot beef soup

spiced with chilli, ginger and lemon grass, beef adobo and rice). Everyone was all-praise for Kookie’s very tasty meal. More drinking and chatting continued until about 9:30 p.m. when most of us had to call it a day.

It was a restless night for me, my mind preoccupied with frightening images of that vertical cliff climb. I imagined myself having slipped and crashed down to the rocky ground below.

I was unable to sleep well that second night in Camp 2.

As in Camp 1, the weather was very cold that evening (easily below 15 degree C).

Multi-Awarded Photographer Visits CdeO Photos and Text by Roselyn Paglinawan

M

ulti-awarded photographer Chito Vecina came to visit the (City of Golden Friendship), Cagayan de Oro with Kyle Stanley an American photographer from Minneapolis Minnesota on August 21.

Vecina the founder and the President of Travel Foto Expo Explorer originally called ‘Travel Light,’ working closely with Stanley as one of the Foto Expo speakers enthusiastically took the long ride from Davao to Cagayan de Oro to explore the Kagay-anons’ pride.

Arriving in Cagayan de Oro River (Cagayan River) that used to be called Kalambaguasasahan River, they had set up a photo shoot with both male and female model and experienced the wild, heart-stopping Whitewater Rafting.

The fun and adventure continued as they met and get to know with Kagay-anon culture, the friendliness and the cooking style they came to admire.

Stanley also shared, he did a free photo-shoot for N hotel and the picture will soon be used as the billboard advertising in Lumbia Airport.

Sneak Peek – Foto-grapher’s Echo Early afternoon on August 22, I received an invitation for a prenup photo shoot in the Missy BonBon Breadshop Restaurant near Limketkai Mall.

Unprepared, but still manage to grab my DSLR camera (Digital single-lens reflex) placed it on my back pack and off I go.

Whew! I was nervous and I could only smile at them. They paused for a minute to give me a warmed welcome and let me take photos of the bride and the promising groom to be.

The emotions were vivid on their faces, who would not want to capture the magical moments of the couple who I expected to be married soon?

Of course no one dares to miss this chance! I found myself taking candid shots proudly learned from my photojournalism professor in college, Mr. Shaun Alejandrae Yap Uy. I even got to try their expensive, long lenses. I was just there, mingling with new set of friends, unknowingly I was spending time with one of the best photographers in the world.

Honored, I was shaking hands with the multi-awarded photographer, Chito Vicena from Makati City, a journalism graduate who dedicated

35 years in photography until the present.

Humble, down to earth person, but who actually photographed the past five Philippine presidents and other prominent personalities.

Vecina also earned many awards as a staff of the Philippine Daily Inquirer won awards from the 2 leading international competitions.

His previous photographs were published in New York Times, Newsweek, Washington post, San Francisco Chronicle, Asiaweek and Canada’s Sposa wedding magazine.

In 33 years as a photo-journalist, he worked for international news agencies including Reuters, Agence France Presse, and Philippines Newspapers and recently doing a travel, wedding photography and as an event organizer.

Vecina has also shared a secret of his triumph in photography. He took extra-ordinary photos which I saw myself that didn’t even need editing at all using a D1000 camera.

“Keep on learning and learned the new technology in photography said Vecina in a sincere tone of voice during my actual interview with him.”

Out of breath? Meet the Minnesotans hometown prince, Kyle Stanley who joined military when he was 18 serving his country and using his skills and passion in photography to captured heartmelting images, candid shots.

Stanley came from blood line of artistic family with his grandfather creative side collecting arts and blessed in the ability of pencil drawing.

He is an artistic photographer focusing in wedding, fashion, Architecture, landscape and sports photography once provided free training to some of the US photographers.

On 2006 he fell in love with the Filipino culture and came to Philippines, living in Cavite where now he called home.

Coming to Cagayan de Oro has added to his unforgettable adventures in life and not only the wild, energetic welcome of whitewater rafting but the Kagay-anon itself and the food.

“Tasty, I like the food a lot

especially Sinuglaw. It was so nice.” exclaimed Stanley, expressing his great encounter with Kagay-anon and the food which I found genuine.

In fact, Sinuglaw is allegedly considered as one of the Visayan and Mindanao’s mouthwatering appetizer mixed with grilled pork (Sinugba) and fresh tuna (Kinilaw).

Stanley also added he spent 3 years taking photo-shoot with international rally cars and liked to capture images to express himself that people may smile or it may brighten their day.

Wild Road, the Bridge and the Bride Widely awaked, heading to the newly built Carmen Bridge, our next destination that made my heart dancing not of joy but of tension with the huge truck’s crossing the bridge.

Who would think I got the trembling moment? Laughing, I could only nod my head after they asked me to get on the other side of the road to take my shots.

Brave enough, the bride and the groom stood on the center of the

bridge with cars, truck motor cycle passing beside them.

They became an instant celebrities, people in their moving vehicles screaming and waving their hands out of excitement congratulating them.

Thrilled passersby have asked me if they are soon to be married and I was out of words with a huge smile on my face.

For a minute, I thought to myself that this is the moment every woman’s waiting for to celebrate their last day of being single and sharing it with the man they love.

Yay, it was quiet dramatic! Just when I found out it was just a photoshoot with the male and female model acting out as a couple to make a realistic photos.

Quiet a funny realization, but then nothing beats the sunset and our bonding, and the day end-up with many laughters with me looking at their photos with amazement!
