Xavier University International Studies students conduct Reading on Wheels O
Story by MARK FRANCISCO
UTSIDE the halls of Xavier University, just a few meters across the street actually at Magsaysay Park in what used to be Park Cafe, you will see Xavier University students mingling with street kids every Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
Nope they’re not merely playing with the kids. They are there actually to conduct reading sessions with the kids. It’s not really an academic tutorial, it’s more of molding character to the children, some of them unfortunate enough to lose their parents and family at such a young age and left to fend for themselves in what usually is a harsh urban environment for them. “We have high hope for these children. We hope that one day, they will be given a second chance at opportunities life is offering and become responsible adults,” Geffel Rodrigora, president of Ateneo
Diplomatic Corps, said. “While other groups take care of their academic upliftment by institutionalizing informal tutorials, we are taking care of their values formation.” Ateneo Diplomatic Corps is instrumental in realizing Reading on Wheels, a conceptualization by one visionary Xavier University International Studies alumnus who is now based in Germany. While staying in that country as a graduate enrollee of the Willy Brandt School in Erfurt, Jessie Jhon Magkilat came across a call for entries in the Commitment Award. The competition aims to

give recognition to social initiatives conceptualized by the students. Magkilat and his Canadian partner Hannah Yan-Wai Saley decided to enter their Reading on Wheels project which aims at improving street children’s life by bringing the joy of reading to children in the streets of Cagayan de Oro from little trollies or kariton. Magkilat, who was finishing his master’s degree in public policy at the time, defended
his Reading on Wheels project before the Commitment Award 2015 jurors, saying that “it is an opportunity to build trust with the street children and meet them at a place they are familiar with. The target group will be between ages five to 12 and hope to use Reading on Wheels as an avenue to create a childhood that these children have never experienced. The purpose is not to directly teach a child how to read and Reading/PAGE 11
