WANDER to the uptown part of Cagayan de Oro and you’ll find a cozy spot for vegetarians and vegans alike.

Buen Provecho, which is Spanish for “enjoy eating” is exactly like that. It encourages you to eat more yet remain weighing less. Why? Because this resto inside Lane 101, Masterson Ave. serves only veggies.

But no they’re not your regular green-

colored looking stuff. For this is the only restaurant in uptown Cagayan de Oro to serve faux meat.

Faux meat, which looks oh seemingly real minus the guilt of course, is being meticulously prepared by Buen Provecho Café’s inhouse chef who trained in Cavite just for the purpose.

Buen Provecho is a product of hardwork by wellness practitioner Dr.

Rod Tabingo.

Tabingo said he was enticed to put up his own restaurant business to “walk the talk” so to speak after his string of wellness lecture series garnered a following.

“We are holding

wellness discussions and sessions every Saturday afternoon at the function room of Buen Provecho Café. For the participants, they will be able to appreciate more how important wellness is to them once they have tasted the food that we serve,” Tabingo said.

We, a group of Muslims and Christians and members of civil society from Mindanao, have answered the invitation of the Sant’Egidio Community to come together in Rome to dialogue on peace in Mindanao.

We were graced by the active presence of His Eminence Orlando B. Cardinal Quevedo, O.M.I., Archbishop of Cotabato, and of His Excellency, AlHajj Murad Ebrahim, Chairman of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

They had attended the International meeting on “Paths of Peace,” organized in MunsterOsnabruck, Germany, by Sant’Egidio Community.

Our hearts cry for peace. We felt the sufferings of the displaced people of Marawi and the whole region, particularly the ongoing ordeal of innocent hostages inside the city. We experienced helplessness as well as righteous indignation while the weapons of destruction daily increase the death toll of combatants and civilians.

Marawi dramatizes for us three interconnected challenges to peace in Mindanao: violent extremism and terrorism; the uncertainties of the implementation of the political peace process; and the crucial role of religious leaders and communities in the rebuilding and development of Marawi.

In this light, we make the following declarations: 1. The conf lict in Marawi is not a religious war; it is a war against terrorism and violent extremism.

The many stories of mutual assistance between Muslims and Christians attest to the rejection of this evil. These stories of solidarity likewise attest to the Filipinos’ sense of sharing a common humanity with anyone in need, regardless of creed or community.

2. Islam and Christianity are religions of peace. We call for the inclusion of peace education at all levels in our schools, madaris and communities. We need to build a Culture of Peace based on personal integrity, respect for human rights, intercultural dialogue, care for the environment, peaceful coexistence and eradication of poverty.

We recall the words of Andrea Riccardi, founder of Sant’Egidio that “War

is the Mother of all Poverty.”

3. Inter-faith and intra-faith dialogue should be promoted as a means of understanding and appreciating other cultures and religions and enhancing cooperation. This dialogue must move from the highest level to the grassroots levels of society. Dialogue starts with self-examination to remove biases and prejudices.

4. We welcome the current efforts at writing a more inclusive history of Mindanao that explores the root causes of conf lict and depicts significant events and personalities from Muslim and indigenous people communities.

5. We commit ourselves to reach out to our youth, who will be the future leaders of our Mindanao communities. They have so much to contribute towards building our communities with a renewed vision of Mindanao as our shared homeland.

6. We appeal to our legislators and government officials to prioritize and expedite the passage of the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL). This has been delayed since the signing of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB) in March 2014. An approved BBL should provide a positive alternative to violent extremism.

7. We fully endorse the call of Duyog Marawi (“Accompany Marawi”), spearheaded by the Prelature of St. Mary in Marawi together with local government units and civil society organizations. The united efforts of volunteers of different faiths are the best example of working and living together in peace and solidarity.

As religious leaders and representatives of civil society we commit ourselves to this declaration.

We express our profound gratitude to the Community of Sant’Egidio for initiating this informal dialogue on the peace process in Mindanao and we ask the same Community to carry on this conversation with all those who seek peace.

May the Compassion and Mercy of Almighty God, that we are asked to share with others, be our light and hope in these moments of crisis.

Almost on the way to the airport for a longer stay in Manila, I get this in mind: we hardly count our blessings.

We enjoy counting our crosses.

Instead of gains, we count our losses.

We don’t have to do all that counting computers do it for us. Information is easily had.

Just remember this: Opportunity doesn’t just knock - it jiglles the doorknob, and “your friend” - the worrier, is with you day and night, at every corner, following your every step. Complaining and grumbling are good excuses, aren’t they? We have time and opportuntities to do almst anything. So why haven’t we done it?

We have the freedom of bondage or restraint, every one of us in his or her very special way - but, we’re still our old inferior selves.

The whole world is an awful place filled with dreadful and horrible negativsm. Yes, I confess, I am also surrounded by many worriers who put their fears into me! Politicians, i.e., many times love to search for some grave alarm that will cause individuals to abondon their separate

concerns and act Have My Say in concert, so that politicians can wield the baton. Calls to fatal struggles and fights are forever being surrounded.

Klaus Doring But at this moment, I am counting my blessings and thank our Almighty God for everything.

Well, when will we start counting our courage and not our fears, or enjoy instead our woes? Worrying itself is pointless. Of course, no society has achieved perfectly rules of law, never-ending education or unique responsible governments. Let’s seek out the worries but avoid the worriers, because they try to avoid liberty.

Cebu Pacific invests in DPLs for Persons with Reduced Mobility T

he Philippines’ leading carrier, Cebu Pacific (PSE: CEB), is set to roll-out Disabled Passenger Lifts

(DPLs) in key airports nationwide.

The DPLs would allow Persons with Reduced Mobility (PRMs) an easier and more

comfortable boarding experience on Cebu Pacific flights.

CEB is the first airline to invest in its own DPLs, in line with its thrust

to improve passenger experience. Although CEB has invested over PHP100 Million for the procurement and installation of 35 brand-new DPLs, they are available free of charge for Cebu Pacific passengers with reduced mobility. Aside from PWDs, these include pregnant and elderly passengers who may have difficulty climbing stairs to board their flights.

The first DPL was installed at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 in March 2017 for testing and evaluation. Since July 2017, the DPL has been used to lift PWDs, pregnant and elderly passengers on a limited number of CEB flights.

Airport Services of Cebu Pacific, said the rest of the DPL units would be deployed starting 2018.

Six more units would be placed at the NAIA Terminal 3, with the rest to other CEB hubs across the country: Clark, Kalibo, Iloilo, Cebu and Davao; as well as hightraffic airports across the country where CEB operates flight using Airbus aircraft. Target completion is by June 2018.

“We are looking at initiatives to improve the passenger experience for every Juan. For our PWD passengers and those with reduced mobility, we recognize that the experience of being lifted manually can be uncomfortable. Investing in the DPLs will allow us to board and deplane

passengers with reduced mobility safely, with minimal discomfort,” said Shau.

In 2016 alone, over 43,000 passengers availed of wheelchair assistance from the check-in counter. Of this number, more than 14,000 were wheeled from the checkin counter and carried to their seats in the aircraft.

The DPL was introduced in 1998 by international aircraft service provider Airport Maintenance Services– Ground Service Equipment to give airports a safe, comfortable and dignified way to get PRMs on and off aircraft.

Overall championship title in the elementary level, however, was shared between Cagayan de Oro City Central School and East City Central School in English and Filipino, respectively, Carrasco said.

Cagayan de Oro College-Phinma and Saint Mary’s Academy of Carmen took the first and second runnerup overall rankings in English while Lumbia National School and Xavier University High School grabbed the first and second runner-up spots in Filipino.

In the elementary level, East CCS was first runner-up in English, Cagayan de Oro City CS also took the same ranking in Filipino, while host Bulua Central School was second runner-up for both English and Filipino.

Meanwhile, School Paper Advisers Association president for secondary schools Estormeo Serena, who is also one of the coaches of Gusa RSHS, said they won the overall championship title for the seventh.

“We’re lucky to be the overall champion again, “ Serena said, admitting they retained the title because of their school’s performance in group contests, winning all except radio broadcasting in Filipino.

Aside from radio broadcasting, contested upon during the two-day DSPC (Sept. 29 and 30) were group contests on collaborative publishing, school publications, and

Earlier, district level contests were held separately in 10 schools for writing editorial, feature, news and science as well as in editorial cartooning.

“The top seven performers per district were brought for judging again in the division level,” Carrasco said, adding that by doing so the best outputs could emerge aside from trimming down the participants in the DSPC. Champions in group contest events and the top three in individual contest events will represent the division in the Regional Schools Press Conference at Liceo de Cagayan University, Cagayan de Oro on Oct. 23-25, this year.

Cagayan de Oro City Schools Division, one of Northern Mindanao’s biggest divisions, has 109 elementary and secondary public schools, aside from about 30 privately-owned ones.

Exploring Misamis Oriental on the 10th Scott Kelby Worldwide Photowalk

ow on its 10th year which was started by the American Photographer, Designer, and Author himself Scott Kelby, the Scott Kelby Worldwide Photo Walk has grown immensely in size and popularity since the inaugural walk in 2007. Last year, over 196 countries, and 4,416 cities with a total of approximately 25,000 photographers participated the 9th Scott Kelby Worldwide Photowalk exploring the corners of the world through photography and social community. In Cagayan de Oro-Northern Mindanao Leg, there were 58 hobbyists, students, and professionals who converged the annual event.

This year, Cagayan de Oro located in the Northern part of Mindanao, Philippines will once again join the world’s

most anticipated global and social photography event, the 10th Scott Kelby Worldwide Photo Walk happening on October 07, 2017 together with thousands of cities all over the world. The Cagayan de Oro-Northern Mindanao Leg will be led by Clement Dampal II, a CDO-based Diversified Lensman, who also happened to be the Official Photo Walk Leader last 2015, and 2016 editions.
