Like their most

illustrious alumna Pia Wurtzbach, the reigning Miss Universe, this reply most probably sealed it for the winner of the competition which had “Education with a heart” as its theme.

The pageant held last Friday, 14 October 2016 at the air-conditioned (thank God!) Corpus Christi Gym at its Macasandig Campus selected winners from the grade schools and high schools of

its two campuses in Macasandig and Pueblo de Oro. Joining Tia in her court for Miss CCS Grade School (Macasandig Campus) 2016 are Cleeshave Jhames Revamonte Baviera (First Princess); Kristine Joy Imperio Hengania (Second Princess), and Ashley Jea Batausa Llubit (Third Princess).

Besides being chosen Miss CCS Grade School (Macasandig) 2016, Tia

JICA to donate 4,200 e-learning materials in CDO

The idea of close family ties is widespread among Filipinos as evidenced in their habits and practices. CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has bankrolled a project to donate 4,200 computer tablets, books and other e-learning materials in Cagayan de Oro City schools spread over the next three years.

Under a memorandum of agreement inked last Monday (October 17, 2016), Jica will finance the project while suppliers Keirinkan Company and KJS Company Ltd. will provide the materials. Keirinkan Company is a known book publisher in Japan while KJS Company Ltd. will develop the content to be embedded in the computer tablets and books.

There will be four initial recipients of the project, one of them privately-owned. They are the Jesuit-run Xavier University High School and the governmentowned Regional Science High School, Bulua National High School and Macabalan National High

Hedcor Hydro Construction attains safety milestone October 17-23, 2016

T

HE ongoing construction of the 68.8MW Manolo Fortich Hydropower Project of Hedcor in Bukidnon Province has attained 3.7 million man-hours with no time lost on incidents resulting in injuries on personnel.

Hedcor’s president and COO Rene Ronquillo said, “A safe working environment can only be achieved if there is a collective effort from our team. And, this is now the result. Our team has shown a strong regard to our commitments to health, environment, and safety.”

AboitizPower subsidiary Hedcor considers the development a major achievement, considering that the project site covers 74 hectares and involves a workforce of about 2,000.

Ronquillo said the project is now 63-percent complete.

The first of the two

cascading run-of-river hydropower plants is contracted to JV Angeles Construction while the second power plant is contracted to Sta Clara International Corporation.

Hedcor commenced the construction in May 2015. The hydropower generation facility is expected to be commissioned by the third quarter of 2017.

The 68.8-MW Manolo Fortich Hydropower Project in Bukidnon will provide additional clean and renewable energy to the Mindanao grid.

Recently, Mindanao cooperatives like Zamboanga del Sur Electric Cooperatives 1 and 2, Zamboanga del Norte Electric Cooperative, Misamis Occidental I Electric Cooperative and Siargao Electric Cooperative signed renewable energy supply agreements with Hedcor.

The world’s largest phone maker this week said it was also expanding a U.S. recall of the fireprone model to a total of 1.9 million Note 7 phones, including the 1 million Galaxy Note 7s it recalled on September 15.

Product Safety Commission said on Thursday the Note 7’s battery “can overheat and catch fire, posing serious fire and burn hazard to consumers.” It added that Samsung had received 96 reports of batteries in Note 7 phones overheating in the United States, including 23 new reports since the September 15 recall announcement.

Passengers who are currently traveling with Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phones should contact Samsung or their wireless carrier immediately to obtain information about how to return their phones and arrange for a refund or a replacement phone, the department said.

Samsung has recalled more than 2.5 million of the smartphones, citing a battery manufacturing error. The South Korean company

Q&A with Lezette Albarote Triathlete Member, Team Herbalife Philippines

1. After being awarded as the Fastest Filipina Age Grouper for 2016 at the recent Cobra 70.3 Ironman in Cebu, what’s next for Lezette Albarote?

- Cebu 70.3 Ironman races are always special to me, because this is where I started to believe that I can compete. It also means extra pressure to perform and hope for a podium finish.

Becoming a winner also demands that you develop the ability to handle pressure.

Triathlon is very challenging. It’s an endurance sport as much as it is a mental sport. The strongest doesn’t always win the race. It’s the most clever who wins the race. Mental skills such as the ability to deal with setbacks and adversities during the race are important factors to win.

I am looking at joining races abroad, too. I would like to compete with the best in the world. The level of efficiency, strength and competitiveness of foreign athletes are far better than what we have here in the local triathlon scene. I would like to be able to challenge myself and conquer international races.

I intend to join triathlon races until I’m 80 years old.

More than a sport, it’s already part of my lifestyle.

2. How did you prepare for the race?

- Races like these are considered A race

for the year. All your trainings are directed to this one race of the season; preparation extends to months; loading your mileage of swim bike and run.

REYNA ELENA:

Daughter brings back Mom’s Award-Winning Play The daughter of one of Cagayan de Oro’s award winning playwright is bringing back her mother’s award-winning stage play.

Maia Poblete, daughter of Ma. Soledad Chic Reyes Nery-Fortich, will be staging the fulllength play Reyna Elena which won 2nd place in the 1983 Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature when she was but a 3rd year high school student.

Originally, play was a project for a playwriting workshop facilitated by Kagay-anon director and writer Nestor U. Torre.

“The staging of Reyna Elena is my tribute to mommy. It is my way of thanking her for everything she taught my sister and I,” writes Maia in her blog Maiascribbles.

“It is the best way to acknowledge the person that she was; not only to me, my sister, my husband, my niece, and my dad; but to the many others who she helped in one way or another as well.”

Maia has been staging benefit one act plays but it would be her first time since 2005 to direct and stage a full-length play “The reason why I admired/admire my mom is because she didn’t let her disability stop her from fulfilling her goals.

About Chic Fortich

Ma. Soledad Chic Reyes Nery-Fortich was the youngest of six siblings.

Her father, Vicente Nery was a musician.

She suffered from two eye diseases: Retinitis Pigmentosa and Optic Atrophy. RP is a genetic disease, which caused her to slowly lose her eyesight. When she passed in 2006, she was already 98% blind.

Chic was a prolific writer and had a regular column Outtasight! in the Philippine Daily Inquirer featuring every day stories about her experiences as a blind person. She also wrote Tagalog and English novels under different pseudonyms; like Sol Reyes.

Besides Reyna Elena, Chic was also the writer, lyricist, and director of the original Binisaya musical Ay Kasing Kasing Ko, staged at the Manila Metropolitan Theater Dalubdulaan in 1987; and the XU Little Theater in 1989. She co-wrote

Labaw sa Bulawan: A Musical Tribute to Visayan Songs and Songwriters,” a musical variety show directed by Nestor U. Torre staged at the City Tourism Hall and Grand Caprice in the early 1990s;, and wrote and directed

Salangsang, which was staged at SM City CDO in the early 2000s.

Chic Fortich was recognized by ABS-CBN and the City Historical and Cultural Commission as this year’s Tsada Awards Awardee for Literature.

The event also wanted to uplift the spirit of the students in time for the finals week.

Importance of mental health The XU psycholog y com mu n it y a l s o vows to celebrate the World Mental Health Day annually at Xavier every October 10 to spread the awareness, give hope, and ripple positivity.

Mental health is defined as "a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community."

T h e Wo r l d H e a l t h O r ga n i z at ion ( W HO) underscored the importance of mental health by including it in their definition of health as "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."
