Drugs are addictive, escaping is hard, don’t start (Anti-Drug Abuse Campaign 2016) Summary
T
he program started at eight o’clock in the morning after all cadets from College of Maritime Education occupied all the seats. The program started with Invocation followed by National Anthem and CU hymn that was led by Maritime Education Melodic Circle (MEMC). After that is the opening remark by the President of RC West CDO. After the opening remark is the welcome address by the Atty. Casimiro B, Juares Jr. And after that is the start of seminar proper. The seminar proper started with the introduction of the speaker. After that the first speaker started his speech. At first he showed us a short video of a chicken like animation where after the chicken slurped the jelly like food, he felt that he was flying and after that he continues to find that jelly like food because it makes him felt good. The video shows the effects of drugs after we only try it ones, we became addicted
to it and do everything even bad things to get a taste of that dangerous drugs. He also told us that drugs can affect the body in different ways. In fact, some drugs can even change a person’s body and brain in ways that last long after the person has stopped taking drugs, maybe permanently. He even told us that depending on the drugs, it can enter the human body in a number of ways, including injection, inhalation and ingestion. The method of how it enters the body impacts on how the drugs affect the person. For example: injection takes the drugs directly into the blood stream, providing more immediate effects; while ingestion requires the
drugs to pass through the digestive system delaying the effect. He also told us that the most abused drugs directly or indirectly target brain’s reward system by flooding the circuit with dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter present in regions of the brain that regulate movement,
emotion, cognition, motivation, and feelings of pleasure. When drugs enter the brain, they can actually change how the brain performs its jobs. These changes are what lead to compulsive drug use, the hallmark of addiction. The second speaker told us about his experience as a drug user. During his youth he is using drugs for fun. He even has schedule on how often he will take the dangerous drugs. There were even a time that he take drugs every day and did not sleep for one week because he still has energy do things, during that time he didn’t even took a bath before going to school because
he thinks that his body is still clean. And when he played basketball with his friends, his friends was shocked because he jumped so high and didn’t break a sweat during the game and still has a lot of stamina. But after the drug worn out, he feels that his body was so heavy and feels very tired and he even caught a fever. He took a rest for a few days because of that. After he heals, he took drugs again with same amount like last time but he felt has the effect was lacking, he increased the amount of drugs again and again and again to make himself feels good. But after he reach an age of thirty-one, his mind
was awakened that taking drugs makes life shorter and it takes a lot of money so he stopped and changed his life. After the speech of second speaker, the RC West CDO sponsored the raffles. They gave out money worth 500 pesos for the two lucky cadets, one from BS-MT and one for BS-MarE. After they gave out money, they gave other lucky cadets few umbrellas. After the raffles, there is a short intermission number and then the last speaker started her speech. The last speaker’s speech is all about HIV. She told us first the definition of HIV. HIV or Human Immunodeficiency Syndrome is a virus that causes AIDS and is a human condition in which progressive failure of immune system allows life threatening infection and cancers to infect the body. She also told us that HIV can’t be passed through the bite of mosquito. HIV can only be transferred from blood, semen, viginal fluid, pre-ejaculation, breast milk and other fluids secreted by the human body that was affected by HIV. She drugs/PAGE 11

Globe 9-month revenues sustain growth momentum; up 7% at P89.1 Bln Globe Telecom sustained the top line growth momentum for the first nine months of the year with consolidated service revenues of P89.1 billion, up 7% from the P83.4 billion recorded in the same period of 2015. The robust revenue growth was spurred by the gains across data-related product segments, despite the increased competitive intensity. The company’s effective efforts in providing market-relevant data offers, the best of breed solutions to cater to the evolving needs of its customers, backed by the significant improvements in its wireless and wired data networks, have paved the way for its continued success. For the first nine months of 2016, Globe recorded net income of P11.7 billion, down by 17% against the P14.1 billion reported in the same period of 2015, as the gains in EBITDA were offset by increases in depreciation and non-operating charges. Note that non-operating charges included P540 million of Globe Telecom’s share in net losses of joint venture, owing to the acquisition of Vega Telecom Inc., as compared to gains recorded
in the second half of last year from the consolidation of Bayan and the sale of a 51% stake in Yondu, Inc. to Xurpas, Inc. However, on a normalized basis, excluding the impact of the one-time adjustments brought about by the abovementioned transactions, net income would have declined only by 2% year-on-year. The company’s core net income, which excludes the impact of non-recurring charges, foreign exchange gains and mark-to-market charges, stood at P11.7 billion, still lower by 8% year-on-year, as the gains in EBITDA were not able to offset the increase in depreciation in the period. “Notwithstanding the serious turn in the level of competition, we are happy that the company’s overall financial results remained strong and still on-track with our guidance for the year,” said Ernest L. Cu, President and CEO of Globe. “We remain steadfast with the expansion of our data network and capacities, to maximize the use of the additional 700 and 2600 megahertz (MHz) frequencies by investing heavily on LTE to give our customer the best
experience in terms of the speed and reliability of our internet services.” Mr. Cu added. Globe Telecom’s mobile revenues slightly grew by 1% year-on-year, reaching P68.3 billion for the first nine months of 2016 from the P67.5 billion reported a year ago, given the continued shift towards digital lifestyles from the core services of voice and SMS. TM, the company’s mass-market brand, posted a 3% growth year-on-year while Globe Postpaid showed a 2% improvement from the same period of 2015. This, however, was partly offset by the slight decline in Globe Prepaid revenues by 1%. At the end of September 2016, the company’s mobile subscriber base reached 65.4 million, up a robust 23% from the 53.1 million subscribers reported in the same period of 2015, still driven by the strong prepaid gross acquisitions during the period. From a product perspective, mobile data remains to be the top contributor for mobile revenue growth, which rose to P25.2 billion for the nine

Mark Zuckerberg and several other senior Facebook staff are facing charges of abetting crimes like Holocaust denial. German authorities believe the social media giant is not doing enough to censor the offensive posts. The Munich court has opened a lawsuit against Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, German media reported last Friday. News outlet “Der Spiegel” wrote on its website, before the main weekly magazine’s Saturday release, that it had obtained court documents charging the social media mogul with incitement to hatred. Zuckerberg is reportedly being charged alongside Facebook CEO Sheryl Sandberg, chief
Europe lobbyist Richard Allan, and his Berlin counterpart Eva-Maria Kirschsieper. According to the “Spiegel”, the complaint comes from the Würzburg-based attorney Chan-jo Jun. In the suit, he accuses Facebook of tolerating appeals for murder, threats of violence, and Holocaust denial, among other things. Laws regulating hate speech in Germany are extremely tight, with most Nazi symbolism and racist propaganda strictly forbidden, a legacy of Germany’s role in World War II. Although Facebook is obliged to remove illegal content from its site, it has repeatedly garnered hefty criticism for the time it takes to do so. German Justice Minister Heiko Maas has made hate speech on social media something of a pet project, threatening Twitter and Facebook specifically with being “too slow” in removing offending posts. Maas has pushed a new initiative in Brussels to create EU-wide laws
that would hand out stricter penalties for racist or xenophobic content. Spreading racist ideology can come at a hefty price in Germany. Last month, a man in Würzburg became the latest to see jail time over an online post advocating racial hatred. The posts in question advocated violence against Jews, foreigners, and refugees. Although the defendant expressed remorse, he was handed a prison sentence of two years and three months. We all know: Facebook has often said it stands unequivocally against hate speech, and would work in the future to ensure a swifter removal of related posts. But what did really happened? Last December 2015, Facebook, Twitter and Google pledged to remove offensive posts in Germany within 24 hours. Users say their requests to take down hate speech often go unheeded. “In Europe we’re currently discussing the audiovisual directive,” Maas said in a veiled warning. It would

OR 35 kids at the Mt. Apo Elementary School at Sibulan City Side in Davao City, school just became more interesting now that they get their lessons inside brightly painted, brand new classrooms. AboitizPower subsidiary Hedcor and Aboitiz Foundation, Inc., in partnership with AGAPP (Aklat , Gabay, Aruga tungo sa pag-angat at Pagasa) Foundation, recently turned over the one-storey, twoclassroom Silid Pangarap building—painted in bright green, yellow and red—to school officials to mainly benefit Bagobo-Tagabawa kindergarten pupils. The new school building also houses a library that is equipped
with books, educational toys and posters. The school’s sole kindergarten teacher, Jessica Almiñana, said that they did not have a classroom for kindergarten so she had to share a room with the Grade 2 class. She thanked Hedcor for donating the Silid Pangarap, which she described as a “blessing to their community.” “The kids joined me as I arranged the donated books inside the classroom and I could really see the joy and excitement in their eyes. This classroom will surely inspire them and me as well,” expressed Almiñana. CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- With the theme, "Isulong: Kalidad na Edukasyon Para sa Lahat ng Bata," the Regional Council for the Welfare of Children (RCWC) kicks off the 24th National Children’s Month celebration with a motorcade, turnover of pencils for the One Million Lapis project and medical mission on November 7 at Kiosko Kagawasan, Cagayan de Oro City. To help children focus on their studies and maximize the efforts of the government to ensure quality education, Cagayan de Oro City Social Welfare and Development (CSWD) Officer Teddy Sabuga-a says that it is important to take care of the children's health. Hence, he urges mothers to provide the best nutrition to their children especially in their first two growing years stressing that the inability to nurture the child in such time of their life would result to fragile growth. Sincethisstageisirreversible, Sabuga-a said that mothers should be breastfeeding their infants from 0-2 years.
For her part, Department of Social Welfare and Development-10 (DSWD) Assistant Regional Director for Operations Aldersey M. Dela Cruz says that education starts at home with the family and it is just continued in schools. Thus, the value of education must be cultivated in homes to sharpen the children's potential and talent that will further aid in their physical, social, psychological and emotional development. About 51,000 pencils were also turned over by the RCWC to the Department of Education (DepEd) during the celebration as part of the One Million Lapis campaign that aims to promote the child’s right to (write as basic right) education especially for children whose situations have impeded their chances to go to school. LAND Transportation Office (LTO) 10 director Oscar Salcedo said that he opted to accept his current post that was offered to him by the Duterte administration to ensure the elimination of corruption in the agency, at least at the local level. Speaking during the 10th regional convention of the Fraternal Order of Eagles (Philippine Eagles) last October 29, Salcedo said he was hesitant at first to accept the job. It can be recalled that Cagayanons were genuinely surprised to learn that the soft-spoken and meek Salcedo, whose family owns award-winning Merry Child School, was appointed by the President to head the LTO regional office here. Salcedo, who never held a government post before and therefore had no Civil Executive Service Officer (CESO) eligibility, was able to skirt past regulations after the Civil Service Commission
(CSC) loosened its rules and accommodated worthy persons from the private sector to occupy supervisory jobs. “Even though I did not come from the government, I will do my best to be of service to our constituents – the motoring public. We must overhaul the image of LTO as a corrupt agency in a no-nonsense drive,” Salcedo said, impressing all the Kuyas in attendance who filled Philtown Hotel’s
ballroom in Cagayan de Oro City to the brim. During the event, 45 new Kuyas were also inducted. In his tenure, Eagles NMR1 Governor Dondon Allorin steered the region in topping the most number of recruits among other regions in the country. It was also being recognized by the Eagles national leadership as being number one in community service.
NMR1 was also able to execute various medical and dental missions, outreaches, chartering of new clubs, Operation Linis last elections, joined in the Brigada Eskwela bayanihan, feeding programs and blood donation campaigns. In particular, Allorin is urging all the Kuyas, Ates and Bunsos in NMR1 to join in Dugong Bombo this November 12 at Limketkai Atrium in Cagayan de Oro City.

Young adults comprise majority of investors in SSS voluntary provident fund Ne a r l y t wo -t h i rd s of investors in the Socia l Security System’s (SSS) voluntary provident fund created for local members are young adults of up to age 35, based on enrollment data of the SSS Personal Equity and Savings Option (PESO) Fund as of end of September 2016. SSS Off icer-inCharge of the Voluntary Provident Fund Department Marichelle L. Reyes said t hat 2 , 353 out of t he 3,649 total PESO Fund enrollees are young adults mainly belonging to the “millennial” generation, while the rest are members aged 36 to 54. “PESO Fund aims to give members an extra layer of protection through a safe and secure savings facility for retirement and other needs. It is heartening to see a growing number of members tak ing the initiative to prepare for their future early in their working years,” she said. Employees comprised a large share of PESO Fund enrol l ment w it h 3,116 members or 85 percent, fol lowed by volu nta r y
members with 321 enrollees or nine percent. Other enrol lees include selfemployed i nd iv idua ls, household helpers and overseas Filipino workers
(OFWs). “Slightly more female SSS members have joined the program so far with 57 percent as compared with only 43 percent for the
male enrollees. We urge all members, regardless of gender, to invest in their f ut u re si nce f i na ncia l emergencies can happen to anyone,” she said.
Launched last year, the PESO Fund is a voluntary provident fund offered exclusively to active SSS members here and abroad. The program gives members
