The 10 messages being promoted in the new NGF are simple statements that give advice on the consumption of foods and food components for which there are public health concerns. In 2012, the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (FNRI-DOST) initiated the revision of the NGF to keep up with the changes in the nutrition situation in the country as well as new information on nutrition and related interventions to address nutrition related health problems. e usually like the” cool breeze” of the air in this season. It’s the “ber” months we say but along this coldness the flu season also sets in. Even if we don’t have snow here we still suffer from the “coldness” if we are not extra careful these days. I’m sure you don’t want to cancel any of your gigs just because of not having your voice, having a severe sore throat, etc . For us singers our throat is our life. If we don’t know how to take good care of it especially in a season like this, then we cannot expect ourselves to be at the top of our game. Prevention is always better than cure but If you’re already sick it’s not game over yet, you just have to learn how to manage it, so here’s some tips for protecting our throats this flu/cold season. 1. Get plenty of rest. Just having too little of rest fatigues your body including your mind. It fatigues your throat and voice too. Listen to your body; you’re the only one who knows it. Learn to take breaks... apply the “power nap”. 2. Drink plenty of fluids. Without water you’ll thirst yourself like a thirsty plant. Avoid caffeinated drinks because it can dehydrate you and also dairy products because they help produce mucus.

Psychosocial Debriefing: A Must Do?
mmediately after Yolanda, we started seeing on Television and hearing in the radio, reading on the dailies, about looting in the area. Delivery trucks bearing relief goods were not spared. Fear then for one’s safety, whether as a resident of the affected places or as a volunteer, is an additional burden. And, according to one television show, a guest explained that, such behaviour can be explained as a reaction to the traumatic event and labelled it as Brief Reactive Pyschosis. Victims of events like that of Yolanda’s, Sendong, Ondoy and the most recent earthquake that affected Bohol, may experience either reactive psychosis or post traumatic stress disorder. The later is brief, sudden in onset and commonly affects those who are in the 20-40 year age group, and may be manifested as disorganized behavior, hallucinations or illusions. That must be the reason why they attributed the un-acceptable actions of the looters (which make us wonder, if this is a good enough reason?). In PTSD, children and even the older age group may experience it, and is not an exclusive experience of the directly affected person, but may also affect an observer of the traumatic event. There is that feeling of hopelessness and helplessness.
The time frame likewise is more prolonged as it can last even for a year! Thus, we hear “psychosocial debriefing “, being integrated in the rehabilitation programs. It is quite a popular intervention program intended to help the victims, including those who witnessed the catastrophic event. The goal of which is to provide emotional and psychological support, in order to prevent the development of PTSD and other mental and psychological problems. In the particular instance of YOLANDA, it left in its path victims who not only lost their family, but also their homes, livelihood and may even be suffering from physical disabilities. I could truly feel for them, having been through one crisis after another, losing so much too in this borrowed life. Debriefing simply means retelling one’s experience, hoping that the mere sharing of the event/s can help sort out and give meaning towards it. The question then, is, how soon should it be given, how frequent and who should conduct it? According to the World Health Organization, a single session debriefing is not advisable, more so if conducted early after one’s exposure to the trauma. It would be best to allow other social and mental health
interventions set in place to address the issues. In my readings, there is quite a variance in terms of results as well as agreement/disagreement of experts on the subject of single psychosocial debriefing. But, one thing I have observed in our setting, where the participants are children, it might help them, if for a given period of time, not just one single session, they are allowed to express their fears and anxieties. And, whether the experts say that there is no known success rate as yet in integrating this program to our countrymen, the very act by which they can express and relate their experience, individually and as group can do wonders really. More so, if we don’t just listen to them, but, we also give them a hug and a pat on the shoulder. The physical needs like food, water, clothing and shelter should be addressed as soon as it happens. Once, it is already more or less stable, then, the feeding of the mind and soul, must also take place. Whether one is afflicted with a physical malady or is a victim of a traumatic event, the approach should be holistic: it is not just in providing one’s basic needs to survive but, one’s emotional, mental, social and spiritual needs are as important in getting the much needed attention…

Plurality: Cagayan de Oro City’s Performing Arts
C
agayan de Oro City has many performing arts companies that produce regular seasons of performances. These companies are school and university based while others are from the communities. These companies serve as cultural and artistic nurturers of young individuals who are gifted with talents. And most of these companies aspire to promote Filipino Art and Culture. In Cagayan de Oro City, we have the Liceo de Cagayan University Folkloric Dance Troupe, Next Moves, G-Clef Society and of course their growing music degree program. The Liceo Folkloric Dance Troupe has performed to various countries such as Brunei, Vietnam, Singapore and Russia. Next Moves has also won various national dance competitions such as Globe Telecom Campus Connect Super Showdown. These cultural programs of Liceo have been sustained as their administration puts it as part priority of their academics and holistic human development. Their Rodelsa Hall is an exemplification of their commitment to artistic excellence. The said hall caters not only to Liceo’s performing arts productions but also caters to other productions by companies in the community. Liceo’s Cultural Office is headed by the world acclaimed pianist Rudolf Pelaez Golez, and their Cultural Officer Mr. Owen Jaen (also a BWM columnist). In Capitol University are the award-winning Capitol University Glee Club and Capitol University Dance Troupe. These groups have extensive choral and dance programs. Their cultural office through the leadership of Mr. Joseph Espadilla and glee club helped the CCP Outreach organize the Madz et al – a choral clinic or training to choral groups in Northern Mindanao (leg). Their cultural dance troupe has been trained by the world renowned Douglas Nieras and has echoed the trainings to other dance groups in the community. Capitol University hosted a number of productions such as PILAK, silver anniversary of the CCP outreach and Ballet Philippines Shoes. At present, their cultural office is composed of Ritchie Asibal (Choral), Ms Lara, Ms. Wenna Damulo, Mr. George Caronia (Dance), Mr. Charlo Yare (Dance) and Mr. Nick Aca (Visual). Xavier Center for Culture and the Arts (XCCA) has Xavier University Cultural Dance Troupe,
Xavier University Glee Club, Xavier Philharmonia, The Xavier Stage and Dulaang Atenista. These groups have regular trainings to their artists. Their productions and programs are recognized as part of the sociocultural formation of the university. The companies are moving forward with their artistic forms, pedagogy and audience development following the formation framework of XU as prescribed by the Office of Mission and Ministry. Majority of the performing companies have represented XU and Cagayan de Oro to various festivals and competitions. Dulaang Atenista and The Xavier Stage were featured to Tanghal – University Theatre Festival, and just recently the XU Glee Club participated in A cappella Singing Competition (Ryan Cayabyab) in Manila. The companies also conduct concerts and performances to help raise funds for the survivors of typhoon Yolanda. Just this November 21-23, Dulaang Atenista just celebrated its silver anniversary through the first ever Ateneo Theater Festival. Mindanao University of Science and Technology’s Cultural Office is led by Dr Glenn Reyes. The university has Gintong Amihan Dance Troupe, Circuldo de Entablado and Glee Club. Their companies have regular performances and have been performing in various parts of Mindanao. They had national tours too. Along with Dr Reyes are Mr. Marc John Bacayo, Mr. Leo Palmones and Mr. Raul Prima. Dr Glenn Reyes is also the Executive Director of the community based dance company Kagay-an Performing Arts, and Raul Prima is the Artistic Director. There are also community companies such as Mozart Pastrano’s PASUNDAYAG Theater Company, STAND, Grace and Pointes and Bugo Sinakulo initiatives. Our Department of Tourism-X has also programs on dance and rondalla through the Kagay-an Repertory. Also, Cagayan de Oro City Tourism Council’s Culture and Arts committee headed by Dr Rafaelita Pelaez has programs on the development of culture and arts in the city. One of which is the weekly performances in the Rodelsa Circle, titled Arts Hub. Lastly, CDO’s neighbor is Iligan City whose Integrated Performing Arts Guild- resident theater company of the MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology is staging Steven Patrick

Christmas is just a few weeks away and by a simple and heartfelt gesture of sharing a brand new t-shirt and a personalized greeting card, I believe we will plant seeds of hope in hundreds of children across the Visayas. The Sanina Project is a labor of love, a mission to help rebuild lives and in return create a positive transformation on the people that become part of the project. Right now, we are in the production stage and we hope there will be more people who will pledge assistance and rally for this advocacy to sail smoothly. The Sanina project will not stop once we have given the shirts, we will continue as long as there are people who are willing to help and there are children that needs cheering up. We in the team know that challenges will come our way and the journey is uphill but we know this can be done with everyone’s sincere help and compassion. The road to help rebuild lives has just begun. Kaya Nato Ni!

exposure to household pets during the first year of a baby's life can actually influence the child's immune development. Having pets are also great for older children. "Pets provide an impetus for running and practicing motor skills," says Sheryl Dickstein, Ph.D., Director of Humane Education for the ASPCA. Walking the dog, running around the yard, or throwing a ball could provide great exercise for both the dog and the child, allowing the kid to become accustomed to a less sedentary lifestyle. In this age of endless TV, video games, and iPads, going out of the house to spend time with a pet has enormous benefits to a kid's physical health. 2. Children with pets are more responsible. Caring for a pet can be a great vehicle in which parents can teach their child about responsibility. Little tasks like feeding, grooming, or pouring water into the pet's bowl are great ways to teach a kid to be responsible while also helping develop small motor skills. Parents must remember though that the responsibility given to a child should be ageappropriate. For example, by age 3, a child can help fill the food bowls; by age five, he can already help with little grooming tasks and in cleaning the pet's living area; by age ten, he can begin walking the dog; and in his teen years, he can already take full responsibility for the pet. 3. Children with pets are emotionally balanced. Being able to take care of a pet not only improves the child's nurturing skills, but also gives him a boost of self-confidence at an early age. Because pets, especially dogs, would accept the child totally and unquestionably, the unconditional warmth and affection provided by the pet can be both reassuring and soothing. Several studies have shown that this enables the child to become more affectionate and emotionally receptive. Pets can also provide comfort when the kid is upset, and makes him more socially adaptable. 4. Pets help a child's cognitive development. Spending time with a pet can pique a child's curiosity and encourage him to read up about the pet's behavior. This could naturally lead to researching about the pet's special needs and different characteristics, especially in the case of different dog breeds or unusual pets. Pets are amazing creatures that could help you mold your child into an affectionate, well-rounded individual. But always remember to do your research first before adopting a pet. Take into consideration the different breeds of dogs and their temperaments, as well as how they relate to small children. Study the dog's or cat's behavior first before you allow it to interact with your child, and each interaction with your little ones should always be supervised. All these may seem like hard work, but remember, the benefits will far outweigh your efforts in the end.

n December 2-7, 2013, The Xavier Stage, a repertory theater company of Xavier University will restage its play, Sining Kambayoka Ensemble’s Usa ka Damgo, an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s A Mid Summer Night’s Dream using the local language directed by Mr. Hobart Savior. The restaging of this timeless play is a concrete expression of the university to generate funds and to provide pertinent assistance to the survivors of typhoon Yolanda in the various affected areas in the Visayas through arts and culture. It is the belief of this institution, especially of the Xavier Center for Culture and the Arts, that art has the capacity to heal and to uplift the very strong spirit of the Filipino people. Moreover, the development of art as an instrument of human expression strengthens Filipino’s resilience to stand as one and face the challenges that besets the current situation. In this play, where the Mindanaoan Culture is being highlighted, the institution sends its message of Mindanao’s genuine and sincere solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the Visayas who have been terribly affected by the onslaught of the said typhoon. The artistry which is very

evident in its imagery and direction will allow the audience to be made more aware of the rich Filipino culture, the beauty of the human spirit and the hope that is persistent in our very existence. This play hopes to ignite and awaken the artists within every witnessing individual and allow them to embrace even more their love for their nation even in times that it crumbles. As such it is the theater company’s desire that the audience through the riveting performance, will not just find entertainment, but rather search the much needed inspiration to participate in worthy causes towards the alleviation of the precipitates of Yolanda’s havoc and even to various challenges of our nation. True to the nature, mission and vision of the Xavier Stage, this play is our way of participating in the wide array of providing relevant and concrete support to the Visayas through arts and culture. It is our desire that this play will bring the sensibilities of the audience to a better appreciation of life and to new levels of optimism. Experience the mesmerizing world of Usa ka Damgo and join us in this crusade of providing assistance and the rebuilding of the Visayas.

Exciting promotional events and activities region wide has been lined up this 2013
and in the coming years as part of the nationwide NGF Promotion and campaign designed to create awareness and promote behavior change in dietary practice of our general public. The goal of the wide dissemination of the 10 NGF is to improve the region’s nutritional status as these impacts on productivity and quality of life of our population, through adoption of desirable dietary practices and healthy lifestyle. Governor Bambi Emano in the same vein has committed to end hunger and malnutrition in the province tapping the full support of its Provincial/ City/Municipal/Barangay Nutrition Committees (P/C/M/BNCs). “This day is a very good take off point for the PNC of Misamis Oriental under the leadership of Gov. Bambi Emano in our journey to end hunger and malnutrition in the province. The pledge to end hunger and malnutrition is a nation-wide advocacy of our national government. The LGU effort becomes more strategic efficient and effective if the governor himself personally commits to lead in cascading this advocacy campaign down to its municipal and barangay levels. We are excited that the governor himself is strongly advocating the promotion of the New Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos” Tondares concludes. “Food is a basic human need and is a right. The continuing problem of hunger and malnutrition deprives people of their basic human right and this is morally unacceptable.” The National Nutrition Council strongly advocates that Investing in Nutrition is Good Governance. The manual on the Guide for Local Chief Executives in Solving Hunger and Malnutrition highlights this advocacy. In region X, a number of LGUs has heeded to this call as evidence by increased LGU investing in Nutrition.
