Six Mindanao Dragon Boat Teams to Compete in CDO

F

or the first time in this side of Mindanao, six dragon boat teams will come together in a race cum advocacy event at the Cagayan River on December 6 as part of the sports and environmental campaign of Liceo de Cagayan University.

Three teams from Davao will participate in the event together with teams from Iligan City, Butuan City and Liceo U’s very own Dragonoids, the official dragon boat team of the university and the first team in Cagayan de Oro. The race allows the teams to come together for a mission to promote the sports in Mindanao as well as help the Dragonoids in their campaign to save and preserve Cagayan River.

Each participating paddler will be donating one seedling each that will be part of a tree planting activity of

the Liceo U team in January 2015.

Barely three months old, will the Dragonoids emerge victorious in their first competition?

Find out as the CDO team will make history together with the teams from the rest of Mindanao.

A Legend Returns to Cagayan de Oro: ALAVAR’s SEAFOODS & GRILL

A

lmost twenty years after it first opened its doors to the public in Cagayan de Oro, a legendary restaurant from Zamboanga City has returned to the City of Golden Friendship.

Alavar’s Seafood and Grill has returned, albeit with anot her slig htly different name, but nevertheless with the signature Alavar Sauce and Bagoong still enhancing its simple yet delectable menu of the bounties of the sea.

Originally started in their residence in Guiwan, Zamboanga City by siblings Miguel “Jun” and Teresita “Tessie” Alavar in 1975, it was originally named “Barrio Fiesta” and did not yet carry its signature seafood menu.

In 1978, still sporting its original name, it moved to a newer and swankier venue at the Catis’ residence along Zamboanga’s iconic CawaCawa Boulevard and it was here that the Alavar Seafood House had its first incarnation, along with its signature seafood menu spiced by Alavar Sauce and Bagoong Gata.

In 1983, Tessie moved to Cebu where she opened a new restaurant dubbed “Alavar’s Seafood & Grill” which carried a crab icon as differentiated from the Jun Alavar branch of the budding chain which displayed the fish icon and “Alavar Seafood House” name.

Jun set up two branches in Manila along Jupiter Street, Makti and West Triangle along Timog Avenue in Quezon City managed by his children Marissa, Bebet, Cocoy, Menchit and Dondon while Tessie and daughters Marites Sangciangko-Uy and Ria Ledesma set up shop first in Archbishop Reyes Street, later moving to Gorordo Avenue and thence to Lahug.

In 1994, Jun’s daughter Cocoy Alvarez and her husband Vincent set up the first incarnation of the “Alavar Seafood House” along Don A. Velez St. (now the site of the Generic Pharmacy bodega) near G en. A. Luna st re et.

Meantime, Menchit set up another branch in Davao City just across Victoria Plaza.

Menchit and Cocoy were b ot h f r iends in Zamboanga from way back, we all went to Ateneo de Zamboanga University and me and my family often enjoyed a taste of home practically next door to our then apartment along A. Luna St. Our favorite was “Alavar Seafood Rice”

for only P50 which served you a plate full of rice a la Arroz Valenciana with squid, fish and other bits of seafood.

I also managed to drop

by Menchit’s place in Davao when I was visiting and had some grand times there with our compoblanos Edmond and Jackie Bernardo.

However, the Velez restaurant closed shop after two years when the couple moved to the U.S. and the Davao branch followed suit when Menchit also left for the US. Our family had to content ourselves with Alavar’s Bagoong Gata w h i c h w e c ou l d bu y from compoblano Manny Aliñaon’s “La Ilongga” restaurant and the occasional Alavar Sauce I managed to buy from “Alavar’s Seafood House” in Tetuan (now managed by my college classmate Marissa “Bibing” Alfaro) in one of my rare trips “back home.”

Meantime, Tessie and Ria moved to Iligan in the 1990s and opened another restaurant there which operated until a few years ago when Tess decided to close shop and join Ria in Cagayan de Oro who is now the mall manager of Limketkai Mall.

For tunately for us compoblanos and addicts of the Alavar Sauce and Bagoong Gata, another opportunity offered itself when a space in Buena Oro, Aluba, Macasandig belonging to a friend of Tessie now residing in the US became available.

In September 8 this year, the latest incarnation of Alavar’s Seafood and Grill opened to the public.

So what makes the Alavar marquee so special?

The famous Alavar sauce and Bagoong Gata, that’s what! Used generously with its signature crustaceans like crabs, shrimps and the flagship curacha (spanner crab) from Zamboanga, these are best eaten ‘manomano’ (kamayan) to savor the nuances of flavor the interaction of crab, shrimp and curacha meat with the sauce brings forth.

At present, curacha (depending on the price from Zamboanga and the weight) would cost you PhP480 for 500 grams which is good for four people. Shrimps and crabs are sourced locally and cost P360-380/500 gms.

Spiced with the Alavar Sauce and Bagoong Gata, these cr ustaceans are magically transformed to an otherworldly experience which brings back patrons

back again and again for another bite.

Also highly re commende d are t he baked clams or tahong whose delicate flavors are brought out when enhanced with garlic and the famous Alavar B ago ong Gata.

Other appetizers include green mango with Alavar Bagoong, kinilaw and crispy shrimps.

For those Bisdaks who cannot start any meal without soup, try their clam and pochero soups.

Other specialties include crispy pata, tangigue (ala pobre, grilled or fried); boneless bangus (ala pobre, grilled), squid inihaw, pork inihaw, pork spareribs and lechon kawali.

The spartan menu also lists Adobong Kangkong and Bicol Express while giving the diner a choice of plain, garlic or the iconic

Alavar Rice.

For those who wish to extend their gustatory experience to their kitchens, you can buy Alavar Sauce in half kilo packs for only P175 and Alavar Bagoong Gata for only P90 per bottle. For those who find Macasandig a tad far, these two items can also be bought at the Pasalubong Center at the East Wing of Limketkai Mall.

Already, Tessie’s old customers from Iligan have gotten wind of the new establishment and are coming all the way from there to once more experience the incomparable taste of the crustaceans.

SM TURNS OVER 200 NEW HOUSES FOR YOLANDA SURVIVORS IN BOGO, CEBU

J

ust in time for the first anniversary super typhoon Yolanda, SM Foundation through the SM Cares Housing Program gave hope to typhoon victims by turning over 200 homes at the SM Cares Village in Barangay Polambato, Bogo City in northern Cebu.

The 200 houses is the first of the 1,000 disaster resilient homes that will be given for free to chosen beneficiary survivors of super typhoon Yolanda.

Another 200 homes will be built in Çoncepcion, Iloilo, as well as 400 in New Kawayan, Tacloban City. SM Foundation is also set to break ground for another SM Cares Village with 200 houses in Ormoc City.

Presidential Assistant for Rehabilitation and Recovery (PARR)’s Secretary Panfilo Lacson, United Nations Chief of International Strategy for Disaster Reduction Asia and Pacific Margareta Whalstrom, Cebu Governor Hilario Davide III, and Bogo Mayor Celestino Martinez, Jr. led the ribbon cutting ceremony and unveiling of the donor’s wall and village marker together with SM Prime Holdings President Hans T. Sy and SM Foundation Executive Director Debbie Sy, and members of the Fernan family who donated the lot.

Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Trustee Fr. Ernesto Javier led the blessing of the houses.

Keys and certificates were then distributed to the families to officially identify them as beneficiaries of the program.

“These houses send the message that indeed, there is light at the end of the tunnel,” said Mayor Celestino Martinez.

“These homes provide a start for these families- a new beginning.” He also thanked the Sy family, the Fernan family who donated the land, and “all those who worked hard to make this dream come true for the beneficiaries of the project.”

Governor Davide thanked the SM Group for partnering with the local government unit in giving not just houses, but a village to the community. “Now I can say that Bogo City has risen. Life goes on and we are determined to bring the northern part of Cebu to full recovery.”

Secretary Panfilo Lacson, on the other hand, was happy to note that, “SM followed the standards with the structure of these houses, and we are classifying these housing units as permanent shelters because they followed the 250 km per hour wind resistance.

Each of the 20 x 23 square meter houses is designed to exceed the requirements of the Building Code and mandated standards, each house can withstand the winds and strength of a Category 5 super typhoon without any major material damages.

The village has utilities, basic amenities like streetlights, community center and basketball court. In addition to its disaster resiliency features, the houses will also have heat resistant painted roofing to help

The turnover ceremonies brought a lot of joy to the beneficiaries. Ernesto Orque, who works in a fishpond, luckily saved all his ten children but lost his wife during the typhoon. They lost their home, too and for a year lived with friends and neighbors. Ernesto thanked SM for “providing my family a new shelter and a new hope to pick up the missing pieces of our lives Eufrecina Tepait and her family lived in a shanty and lost hope after the typhoon badly damaged their house. After we learned that we are one of the beneficiaries of the housing project, our hearts leaped with joy,” said Eufrecina.

After the program, donors were able to meet with the different beneficiaries who were all survivors of the super typhoon.

Families thanked the donors for the early Christmas gift they received.

Among the very generous donors present were Ramon Aboitiz Foundation President Robert Aboitiz, Rotary International Past District Governor Ed Chiongbian, and Bernie and Alice Liu of Golden ABC. Also

present were FCB Manila’s Nikki Diyco, Jun Young Bang and Tony Park of Tony and Jackey Beauty Salon; as well as executives from the SM Store, Watsons, SM Appliance Center. Also present were USEC Presidential Assistant for Rehabilitation and Recovery Danny Antonio and SM Supermalls President Annie Garcia.

The village’s streets are named after the major donors –Fernan Street, Acre Aircon Street, All Around Street, Asya Design Street, SM Appliance Street, Watsons Street, Boysen Street, Rotary International Street, and Paul Harris Street.

British model David Gandy, also a donor, had the street named after his grandmother Doreen.

The SM Cares Housing project is fully privately-funded

by SM, its business partners, stakeholders and by the communities it serves.

A famous blind woman once said: “It’s better to be blind and see with your heart, than to have two good eyes and not see yourself as you truly are.”

As the well-known saying goes, “No one is as blind as those who will not see.” A famous philosopher said that one of the most important priorities in life is to ‘know thyself ’, because when we’re blind to ourselves, we believe that our way is always right.

Like the husband who said: “When I married her I knew she was Miss Right, but I didn’t know her first name was Always!”

Many of us are like that wife. We think we see everyone else so clearly, but what about ourselves? We can’t see what we need to correct and change in our own character, so we never reach our potential and live our life to the fullest.

We handle our marriage and other relationships,

raise our children, and go through life never seeing ourselves as we really are. So we develop wrong thinking and bad attitudes that hurt our family members and others. Sometimes we might even believe the lie that we cannot change because that’s just the kind of person we’ll always be. But our blindness, and sometimes pride, doesn’t really want to see and admit our faults. We might we even blame others for our problems and personality.

You see, until we honestly admit that we don’t have a healthy character, we’ll never know we need a doctor to get healed. We need someone else with perfect, clear vision to show us what we don’t see in ourselves. Jesus Christ came to do that for us. He will start changing your heart and help you to humbly admit when you’re wrong. He’ll show you how to better treat your wife or husband and children.

Following this, European leaders have put all their energy to build peace in Europe, starting with the European Economic Community in 1957 with six countries leading progressively to the European Union with 28 member states today.The 2012 Nobel Peace Priza has b een awarded to the EU also for its important role in promoting peace around the world. Building peace is at the heart of the European project, it is in its DNA, and based on that experience, the EU has set itself the goal of promoting peace in other parts of the world - an d t h i s i s i n d e e d remarkable - including the Philippines. In the Philippines, the Eu and its member states have supported the Mindanao peace progress through

all available means from the political level, support to meditation, pr a c t i c a l c on f i d e n c e bui lding me asures at the grassroots level to financial support of the victims of the conflict.

As a m e mb e r of t h e International Monitoring Team, the EU has ensured respect of human rights and protected civilians threatened by violence.

During several meetings in the German Embassy, I learned, that the EU will ensure its continued commitment for a smooth and inclusive transition period until the creation of the autonomous region of the Bangsamoro and the election of its government - forseen for 2016.

Indeed, the EU and its member states have b een pres ent in Mindanao already for a long time. To reiterate their commitments, the EU Heads of Missions to the Philippines have organised regular visits to the region to signal EU

continued support for the Mindanao Peace Process and the development of the region.

Camiguin ticks up climate change advocacy efforts MAMBAJAO, Camiguin – Responding to the call to act and adopt, the local government here is pushing to bring the climate change advocacy campaign down to the barangays.

The commitment was pitched following the Environmental Symposium on Climate Change on November 20, at the convention center hosted by the provincial government in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and Philippine Information Agency (PIA), pooling all municipal disaster risk reduction and management officers (MDRRMOs) and government information officers (GIOs) in the province.
