ifty four students comprising seven batches were graduated from Cagayan de Oro’s leading culinary school in appropriate rites held 13 November 2016 at one of the city’s leading hotels.

Monster Kitchen Academy (MKA) graduated 21 students in three batches (27, 28 & 29) for its Fundamentals in Baking & Pastry Arts (FBPA) and 33 in four batches (15, 16. 17 & 18) in Fundamentals in Culinary Arts. (FCA). So far, MKA has graduated 367 students from its two major curriculum offerings, most of who come from Cagayan de Oro City (61%). However, enrollment has been steadily climbing for the nearby areas like Bukidnon (11%), Misamis Oriental (8%), Iligan (5%)
and Lanao del Norte (3%). Students have also come from as far north as Pasig City and Cebu, northeast (Iloilo, Negros Occidental), northwest (Misamis Occidental) west (Zamboanga City and Zamboanga Sibugay), south (Davao City), southeast (Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur), southwest (South Cotabato) and east (Pagadian City). In addition, thousands of other students of all ages from all over the country have taken MKA’s short term courses like its 12-day
baking program, 12-day culinary program, 12-day cake decorating program and lifestyle classes. Luckier students have even had the opportunity to hobnob with Celebrity chefs like Penk Ching, Sandy Daza, Jackie Ang Po, Buddy Trinidad & Dan Basilio (of Pastry Alliance of the Phils.) and some other famous chefs like Jill Sandique, and Eugine Raymundo. This is a testament to the performance of MKA graduates in local, regional and national culinary competitions where it has reaped awards that have further
contributed to its increasing reputation as one of the country’s leading culinary institutions. Most recently, MKA (representing Mindanao) won a bronze medal as 2nd runner up in the Chef Wars, the Main Event of the 10th National Food Showdown held 19-21 October 2016 at CAP John Hay Trade & Cultural Center in Baguio City. Little Grebe (Cotabato) Spotted in Cagayan de Oro November 21-27, 2016
Article by: Clement Dampal II (www.bestspotsph.com) A LittLe Grebe (Cotabato) has been spotted in a private swamp in Cagayan de Oro making its first appearance in the city. The Little Grebe (Cotabato) considered to be a Philippine Bird Endemic to Mindanao had made a rare appearance last November 11, 2016 from a private swamp in Cagayan de Oro City which a group of Bird enthusiasts considered it as the first sighting in the city. The first appearance was successfully documented by Ms Aimee Valencia, a member of Mindanao Avian Photographic Society (MAPS) based in Cagayan de Oro City whilst having her usual bird survey. According to her, it is her first encounter of the said water bird in the vicinity and was amazed by the newest discovery. The little grebe also know as dabchick is a member of the grebe family of
water birds. The genus name is from the Ancient Greek takhus which means “fast” and bapto “to sink under”. The Little Grebe cotabato is a small water bird with a pointed bill, rufous-colored neck, cheeks and flanks, and bright yellow gape with the scientific name of Tachybaptus ruficollis cotabato and considered to be one of the 9 (nine) subspecies currently recognized which is separated principally by size and coloration.

It is under the Podicipedidae Family, Podicipediformes Order with a Protonum of Podiceps ruficollis cotabato. The documentation was confirmed as the first record of its kind to be seen in the City by members of the said organization. The information was then hand over by a fellow Birder, Marlon Lapuz together with other Bird Enthusiasts which eventually decided me to visit the vicinity. The private
swamp which we called as the “Swamp” consists of more than a dozen avian species such as the Blackbacked Swamphens, Common Moorhens, Bee-Eaters, Egrets, Javan-Pond Herons, Cinnamon Bitterns, Wandering Whistling Ducks, White-browed Crakes, BrownDoves, Spotted Doves, Zebra Doves, Philippine Coucals, Yellowvented Bulbuls, Chestnut Munias, Eurasian Tree Sparrows, Sunbirds, Swiftlets, White-
collared Kingfishers, Red-keeled Flowerpeckers, and the newest member the Little Grebe Cotabato. The Little Grebe as described is an excellent swimmer and diver which uses the vegetation skillfully as its hiding place. Hence, my first encounter is a tough one. You will surely miss it when the avian started to submerge and will eventually emerge from a distance of 3 to 5 meters as per experience.

Rabor, the Prominent Philippine Zoologist and Conservationist) said, “If all are lovers of nature and wildlife then we won’t have the Red book that lists what and how many species are already threaten or critically endangered in this planet!”

Valdez, attended the hearing on the P2,000 pension increase by the House Committee on Government Enterprises and Privatization chaired by North Cotobato 1stDistrict Representative Jesus Sacdalan on November 15. During the discussions with the committee members, Valdez requested the committee to pass a resolution, instead of a bill, providing for the implementation of the pension increase to avoid the “legal challenge based on the principles of non-impairment of contracts.” The pension fund is obligated to pay the social security benefits of its members and beneficiaries in times of covered financial contingencies such as sickness, maternity, disability, retirement and death. SSS Chief Legal Counsel and Senior Vice President for Legal and Enforcement Group Voltaire P. Agas shares Dean Valdez’s concerns on the “constitutionality” of a bill that would appropriate SSS funds which are private in nature, and which are already obligated to finance the benefits of currently contributing members. “We need to consider its [pension increase] impact from an actuarial and financial perspective as well as sss/PAGE 7

Manager Armand, RD Butch and Sherlyn Doloriel did the honors of lighting up the Christmas Tree after which the CCS Choir regaled us with their Christmas carols. Incidentally, the inspired Christmas decors were done by Seda Centrio’s Housekeeping Depar tment. Fantastic job guys! Altogether a ver y enjoyable evening with good friends, great food and the Yuletide ambience that one can only find in Seda Centrio. Thank you friends, let’s do that again next Christmas! Nelson Alonto-Sarapuddin was successfully reelected last Saturday during the 1st NMR4 Convention and Anniversary, bringing together a total of four celebrations – his reelection as governor, the very first convention for NMR4 and the first anniversary of the chartered region which also serves as the birthday of Sarapuddin on that very same date, November 19.
