Jeronil “El Diamanté” Tonasan Borres, who now calls Villa Grande, Lumbia, Cagayan de Oro City home, defeated IBF World Youth Flyweight Champion Robert “El Rapido” Tinambacan Onggocan by majority decision to annex the Asian Boxing Federation (ABF) Flyweight crown.

It was one of the five title fights featured during the 55th Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation

Borres, who fights for Highland Boxing Gym, now sports a 7-3-1 win-loss-draw record with 5 KOs. Onggocan, who was born in Dapitan City but is now based in Biñan City, Laguna, was coming off a controversial 10-round decision loss to German Mirco Martin

last August 12 (Sunday, August 13, Manila time) in Saarbrücken, Germany.

The win was a good bounce back from Borres who was coming from three straight losses going into the ABF title fight.

He had previously lost a heart breaking split decision loss to Korean Joo Hyun Jung last February 2, 2017 at the Bomnae Gymnasium in Chuncheon, South Korea for the vacant WBC Eurasia Pacific Boxing Flyweight title.

DOST-X turns over check for Alubijid empowerment November 19-25, 2017

SSS disburses P127-B benefits as of end-Q3 2017 State-run Social Security System (SSS) said Friday it released more than P127 billion in member benefits as of the end of the third quarter of 2017.

SSS President and Chief Executive Officer Emmanuel F. Dooc said benefit payments increased by 30.31 percent, to P127.78 billion as of the endSeptember 2017 from the P98.06 billion recorded in the same period in 2016.

“The increase in benefit payouts was higher due to the release of the P1,000 additional benefit amounting to P24.03 billion from January to October 2017 and the 3rd tranche of pension adjustments arising from the unlumping of 1985 to 1989 contributions amounting to P72.43 million,” Dooc explained.

The third tranche of pension adjustments for retirees, death and disability pensioners prior to May 24,1997 or the implementation of the Republic Act 8282 or the Social Security Law of 1997 was credited to accounts of

qualified pensioners on June 29, 2017.

The first and second tranche of pension adjustments for retirees, death and disability pensioners, after the implementation of RA 8282, were already released last year.

Broken down, payments for retirement benefit increased by 26.75 percent, to P73.65 billion; followed by death benefit payouts with a 43.51-percent increase, to P40.17 billion; and disability benefit payments with a 9.24 percent-increase, to P4.52 billion.

Disability, funeral, and sickness benefit expenditures also increased by 42.8 percent, to P4.64 billion; 6.09 percent, to P2.85 billion; and 8.47 percent, to P1.95 billion, respectively.

Medical and rehabilitation services, on the other hand, posted a 13.47-percent and 20.36-percent drop, to P9.7 million and P1.1 million, respectively.

On November 6, 2017, a Ceremonial Check Turn-Over and Program Orientation was conducted at the Alubijid Municipal Hall during their Monday convocation.

The check turnover is in line with the approved Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) program assistance, via a project entitled “Enhancement of Community Health, Nutrition, Education and Upgrading of Food Processing Facility” in the amount of Php 665,440.00.

The project, which is led by the Department of Science and Technology – Region 10 (DOST-X), targets various communities in Alubijid.

with Alubijid Mayor Hon. Alvin Giovanni A. Labis as the over-all Head of the Municipal CEST Implementation Team and Ms. Jesselita Armecin as the Municipal CEST Focal Person.

CEST is a program of the DOST aiming to empower the poorest and most depressed communities through science and technology

A world without fossil fuels?

As of November 17 news go: “President Duterte has changed heart and now gave the Department of Energy the green light to consider plans to reactivate the mothballed Bataan Nuclear Power Plant.

Allow me to ask: Is it possible to fulfill all our global energy needs with renewables only? And which technologies work best to help us transition to a world without fossil fuels? Scientists give answers at COP23, which is still ongoing in Bonn/Germany at this moment.

“A full decarbonization of the electricity system by 2050 is possible for lower system cost than today based on available technology,” said Christian Breyer, who heads a team of international researchers at Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) in Finland.

Breyer and his team looked at data from all over the world, such as energy consumption, demographic development and weather. They also analyzed which technologies are expected to be the cheapest in the next three decades.

“Energy transition is no longer a question of technical feasibility or economic viability, but of political will,” Breyer added. Breyer’s team and NGO Energy Watch Group (EWG) presented their findings at COP23 in Bonn.

And I learned: falling costs give rise to solar power. Why? Due to rapidly falling costs, solar photovoltaic (solar PV) and battery storage are the main drivers of securing the global energy supply.

Solar PV’s share of total power supply is expected to rise from 37 percent in 2030 to almost 70 percent by 2050, the study said.

Wind energy would make up 18 percent, hydropower 8 percent and bioenergy 2 percent of the total global energy mix by 2050, according to the scientists’ estimates.

The energy mix would of course look slightly different in areas with a lot of wind and fewer hours of sunshine, such as in Europe’s and Asia’s northern regions.

This undertaking aims to assist farmer-groups in securing a GAP certification, which is an assurance that food or food control systems conform to requirements such as food safety, quality produce, environmental protection, and workers’ health, welfare and safety. By having an ICS, it will bind members of a cooperative or association to ensure compliance to production standards. Also joining the participants are its resource speakers from the Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Standards John Vincent Tecson and Rhitzel Palma with DA-10 officials RTD Carmelita T. Bajarla, MBA and Juliet B. Araos, regulatory division chief along with her staff.

Farmer-groups train on installation of Internal Control System on GAP

F

ortifying its assistance of having their farms be Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) certified, a Training on the Installation of Internal Control System (ICS) on GAP was participated in by members from different farmer-cooperatives and -associations throughout Region 10 held on November 15-17, 2017, here in the city.

GAP is a code that primarily aims at ensuring food safety and assuring produce quality while also having regard for environmental protection and workers’ health, welfare and safety.

In her message, Carmelita T. Bajarla, MBA, regional

technical director of the Department of Agriculture – Regional Field Office 10 (DA-RFO 10) said that the adoption of this Code is timely with consumer demands that are geared towards patronizing products that have undergone certifications.

“As consumers are now health conscious, GAP enhances the safety and quality of our produce with the systems in place,” she remarked.

Recognizing the opportunity, John Vincent Tecson, science research specialist from the Bureau of Fisheries and Product Standards (BAFS), on the other hand, emphasized that in order to easier facilitate the process

of GAP certification, there is a need for an installation of an ICS. “This will serve as a central body within a farmer’s group that will ensure the compliance of all smallholder farmers to a production standard,” he explained.

Likewise, Tecson underscored that before a farmer’s group subjects itself to an external inspection body, that is, the Bureau of Plant Industry, an evaluation in the effectiveness of the ICS shall take place, following the certification as a whole.

“A substantial part of the inspection work is carried out by internal inspectors in the framework of the internal control system set up by the

group,” he said.

Accordingly, Tecson detailed the criteria, including but not limited to, similar production methods and inputs on all farm plots in a group, capacity building among members on set standards and the group’s system plan, among others.

All these, should be consolidated by a group through crafting their respective ICS manual, which will include farm production rules, farm registration, internal inspection, internal approval/sanctions, market system and product handling, he specified.

“The final ICS manual can initially be a fairly simple document. What is more

important, however, is that procedures and forms are actually implemented and understood by all,” Tecson concluded.

Overall, the training module consists of the following topics: Introduction to GAP and Smallholder Group Certification, Basic Farm Files, Risk Assessment, Internal GAP Standards, ICS Organization, Internal Inspection, Approval and Sanction, ICS documentation, and Buying and Selling Products.

Under the leadership of OIC-Regional Director Carlene C. Collado, DA10 through its Regulatory Division spearheaded the said activity.

BPO revenues are expected to outpace remittances from overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) by 2018, thanks in part to the rise of New Wave Cities.

The Philippines has been the world leader in the BPO industry since 2010, surpassing India in the global ranking. As of 2015, there were already 1.2 million Filipinos employed in the BPO sector compared to an estimated 2.4 million OFWs working anytime during the period April to September, 2015. In 2014, the country’s BPO $18.9B BPO earnings were still overshadowed by the $24.6B OFW remittances in 2014, comprising almost 10 percent of the country’s GDP. But revenues from the BPO sector would very likely to outpace remittances from OFWs by 2018,Joey Cuyegkeng, ING Bank Manila senior economist, said during a recent press conference on the bank’s global economic outlook.

at an average of 9 percent yearly toward 2022.

According to the 2022 Roadmap of the IT-Business Processing Association of the Philippines (iBPAP), the BPO sector is expected to generate $40 billion in revenues, 7.6 million direct and indirect jobs, 500,000 jobs outside of the National Capital Region, and cover 15 percent of the total global outsourcing market by the end of 2022.

OFW remittances may generate the projected $66.7 billion by 2022, but Cuyegkeng said the 9 percent growth of the BPO sector is double the pace of the projected 4 percent yearly growth in OFW remittances from 2017 to 2022.

ING Bank expects the Philippines to maintain above 6 percent GDP growth driven by domestic consumption, contributions from OFW remittances and the BPO sector, and the accelerated infrastructure projects of the Duterte administration.

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said recent that the Philippine economy grew by 6.8 percent in 2016, the fastest since 2013, with manufacturing, trade, and real estate activities as the main drivers of growth in the fourth quarter.

Chevron joins forces with host community in coastal cleanup for endangered Olive-Ridley sea turtles Employees of Chevron Philippines Inc. (CPI), marketer of Caltex fuels and lubricants, teamed up with over 200 townsfolk and local government officials of San Pascual, Batangas to fill more than 400 trash bags which amounted to 1.47 tons of rubbish during the coastal cleanup or day four of CPI’s annual Volunteer Week activity.

CPI, which maintains a terminal nearby, coincides the annual cleanup during the breeding season of the vulnerable Olive-Ridley sea turtles. Because of the coastal cleanup which started in 2007 and regular patrols of

CPI security, turtle sightings along the beach have increased steadily over the years and CPI has notified the Department of Environment and Natural ResourcesProtected Areas and Wildlife Bureau (DENR-PAWB) which has officially declared the area an Olive-Ridley Sea Turtle Nesting Ground in 2014.

The DENR-PAWB also trained the personnel of Chevron’s Batangas Terminal in a sea turtle encounter seminar. This resulted in an increase in survival rates of newly-hatched OliveRidley turtles along the coastline. With the ongoing cleanup and

regular patrols of CPI, even whale sharks were sighted feeding around the maritime area along Chevron Batangas Terminal.

This year’s coastal clean-up is made even more special as it marks the tenth year CPI has been holding the Volunteer Week.

Aside from CPI employees, the volunteers were comprised of teachers from San Pascual Central School, San Pascual Baylon Parish, barangay officials, and members of the municipal government.

Caltex retailers were also part of the cleanup, as well as employees of Chevron Holdings Inc. (CHI), which provides

office support to various Chevron offices worldwide.

The shoreline along Chevron Batangas Terminal is also San Pascual’s only coastline.
