Heirs of Pastor P. Ilogon, Sr. unveiled the signage for the Pastor P. Ilogon, Sr. Avenue in a simple program held Wednesday morning at the junction of the 15 x 750 meter road with the Iligan-Cagayan-Butuan Highway.

‘I Am Mindanao’ holds 6th mobile exhibit With its goal to increase the awareness and engagement of young people, particularly the junior high school students, in peacerelated activities, “I Am Mindanao” movement joined the “Oneday Peace Activity” spearheaded by the students and faculty of Assumption Montessori School (AMS) and Holy Trinity Montessori School (HTMS), and held its 6th mobile exhibit at the AMS campus in Balulang on November 11.

“While this activity is called a “One-Day Peace Activity,” I hope everyone would realize that peace is something that should be practiced every day,” Engr Jory Alfaro, director of the two schools, said in his opening remarks as he thanked the “I Am Mindanao” team for partnering with them and help make the event a reality.

During the program, select students were also asked to share their experience getting along with their

classmates who come from different religions and background. One student named Ibrahim, an internally-displaced person (IDP) from Marawi who transferred to AMS because of the siege, expressed his gratitude to everyone in his school for warmly welcoming him in his new environment.

One highlight of the peace activity was the launching of the “Make Marawi Smile” project initiated by the students and alumni of AMS and HTMS, which aims to raise 300 hygiene kits for the kids in Marawi.

HTMS alumna Jezreel Gaza Aguisanda said, “We want to give back, at least gamay lang namo nga ma-help bitaw in our own little ways of participation.”

The event also included a turnover ceremony where “I Am Mindanao” team turned over information and education materials, such as posters, pamphlets, and flyers about peace to the two schools.

The first five exhibits were held at Mary Mount Academy, St Mary’s Academy of Carmen, Carmen National High School, Bulua National High School, and Macabalan National High School, respectively.

“I Am Mindanao” is a social advocacy aiming to: (1) Educate the youth about peace and violent extremism; (2) Strengthen their pride as Mindanaoan; and (3) Empower them to take part in countering violent extremism.

It is composed of Development Communication students of Xavier University Ateneo de Cagayan.

Last July, the team was among the top 4 campaigns in countering violent extremism in the Peer-to-Peer Facebook Global Digital Challenge participated by 114 universities around the world.

Nurses and midwives seeking work in the UK can now take OET

Nurses and midwives who want to work in the UK will now be able to take OET to prove English language proficiency. The UK’s Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has announced it will formally recognize OET for registration from 1 November 2017.

Sujata Stead, OET CEO said “We are delighted that the NMC now accepts OET for registration. The NMC join a range of boards and councils from Australia, New Zealand, Dubai and Singapore who use OET to ensure nurses have the right level of English language skills to communicate effectively at work.”

Overseas-trained nurses and midwives who are required to take an English language test to gain registration with the NMC need to achieve Grade B across all four OET subtests.

The NMC will only

accept results from the February 2016 test administration onwards.

It is possible for nurses and midwives to submit results from two test administrations to the NMC if they comply with strict requirements.

SM Beauty 3 Day Sale SSS to implement real-time posting of contribution payments Social Security System (SSS) is set to implement the electronic Collection System (e-CS) to enable the real-time posting of contribution payments from SSS branch tellering facilities and other payment channels by first quarter of next year.

SSS President and Chief Executive Officer Emmanuel F. Dooc said that real-time posting of contributions will allow faster processing of claims to help members and their beneficiaries receive their benefits and loan proceeds on time.

All SSS benefits and loans are based on contributions of members and their employers. Thus, it is important that these payments are recorded correctly and promptly.

Otherwise, they may not immediately qualify for certain benefits and loans.

“For instance, to avail of a sickness benefit, a member must have at least three posted contributions in the last 12 months immediately before his semester of sickness or injury. If any of his required contributions is not posted, he cannot apply yet for a sickness benefit,” explained Dooc.

Dooc said that the pilot phase of the project will aim for near real-time processing of contribution payments from SSS branch tellering facilities within this year. This means that contributions will be posted within 24 hours from the time of payment. The pension fund has 279 branches nationwide, 96 of which accepts payments. It also has 81 accredited partnerbanks and 10 non-bank collection partners. As of August 2017, the SSS collected P106 billion in contributions from its various payment facilities.

“About 66 percent of our contribution collections are remitted through other payment channels aside from our tellering facilities, so we will make sure that our collection partners

are in sync with our system to implement real-time posting of contributions,” Dooc said.

More than 34 percent of the remittances came from SSS branches amounting to P 36 billion. About 38 percent or P39.8 billion are paid through our ePayment partners like the Electronic Data Interchange facilities, overseas collection partners, Bayad Center, SM Payment Centers, and Auto-debit Arrangement program partners.

The Social Security Commission, the policymaking body of the pension fund, approved the policy amendments, system and procedural enhancements, and resource requirements for the implementation of the e-CS to support continuous process improvements at the SSS. “The Commission’s priority is to enhance the contribution collection process. Not only will it improve the turn-around time for processing benefits, but it will also provide a detailed, accurate, and on-time data on our contribution collection efficiency,” said SSC Chairman Amado Valdez.

Valdez noted that there has been a significant increase in number of unposted member loan collections from P1.135 billion in 2016 to P817 million as of March 31, 2017.

“Although we have managed to improve posting of member loan payments, we are still not happy with it so we are pushing for process enhancements like realtime posting,” he added.

Among the requirements for this process enhancement is for all employers and individual members, namely self-employed, voluntary and OFW members to register in the My.SSS facility at the SSS website.

DENR, JICA join hands to strengthen LGU capacity for improved solid waste management

T

he Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed early this week the Record of Discussions (R/D) for the project aimed at strengthening the capacity of local government units (LGUs) in solid waste management (SWM) using the latest technologies.

The R/D for “The Project for Capacity Development on Improving Solid Waste Management through Advanced/Innovative

Technologies” was signed by DENR Secretary Roy A. Cimatu and JICA Philippines chief representative Susumu Ito in simple rites held at the DENR central office in Quezon City.

Cimatu described the DENR partnership with the Japanese government as “timely and relevant in addressing the issue of solid waste management in the country.”

“It (the project) will help improve the country’s SWM system, particularly the safety closure/ rehabilitation of landfill,

recycling, composting, waste segregation and operation of material recovery facilities (MRF),” he added.

The purpose of the R/D was to establish a mutual agreement for the detailed plan and implementation of the capacity development project, which is expected to run for the next three years. The cities of Quezon, Cebu and Davao have been chosen as pilot sites for the project.

As the agency responsible for the implementation of the project, the DENR has agreed to coordinate

with other relevant organizations and ensure that the project’s self-reliant operation is sustained during and after the implementation period.

Soon after he assumed the DENR post, Cimatu declared that strict enforcement of laws on clean air, clean water and solid waste management will be on top of his priorities.

For his part, Ito said the capacity-building project was the “first step” in addressing the waste management issues in the Philippines.

“The signing of today’s record of discussions of this capacity development project signals a complete first step in helping the Philippines implement management solutions using advanced technologies,” Ito stressed.

He also said that through the cooperation, JICA will be able to share with the Philippines “our experiences and know-how on waste management.”

A charcoal

briquette is a compacted mass of fuel material made from a mix of charcoal fines and a binder, and molded under pressure. It is less messy than ordinar y charcoal and easier to handle because it is compact and uniform in size. Also, it easily ignites, burns more slowly, gives more intense heat per unit volume, and is almost smokeless when burning.

“The bana grass briquette is a most welcome development,” says DOST-FPRDI’s Engr. Belen Bisana, “as the use of eco-friendly charcoal can help relieve pressure on the countr y’s mangroves. During the past decade, the heavy dependence on wood charcoal by lechon businesses all over the

countr y has been blamed for the depletion of our mangrove forests.”

During DOSTFPRDI’s recent techno-demo at Mackay, officers from Mang Inasal Philippines, Inc. were on hand to obser ve how the bana grass briquettes are made. According to Mackay’s Mr. Joseph Issifu, aside from Mang Inasal, they have on-going talks with two other top roasting companies who are interested in their product.

ROLLER COASTER LIFE Yes, nowadays, for many of us life is indeed an emotional roller coaster. All over the world.

Political instability, wars, terror attacks, climate change with extreme natural disasters, questionable global economical situations, illnesses or diseases... .

A day starts with traffic jam and continues with terrible conditions at the workplace.

The crab mentality seems to become nothing unusual now. In any case: everyone for himself.

Each one by himself/herself/itself alone is quite nice, but together...? We have a problem? So what! It’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

Well, sweet words might be easy to say; nice things are easy to buy; but good people are different to find. Life ends, when you stop dreaming; hope ends, when you stop believing; friendship stops, when you stop sharing. A good friend of mine sent me this quotation. I commented back: So very true and very well said!

Our life is borrowed - from God. No rental charges are collected from us. Many of us have forgotten this and live life at his fullest. Our life is equal to a book from a library that lends one. But how insatiable and unbearable are we in disdainful acting towards life and therefore to ourselves?

Life seems to be nothing, just being ready to riddle one with bullets. Life seems to be nothing, just being broken through the indifference and unreliable and immoral behavior. Life seems to be nothing for those people who don’t understand cries from the heart of other people around them - cries for their hearts and families, for justice and for many other things.

Life with all its ups and downs, is just a

loan, but for many of Have My Say our fellow creatures it just seems to be nonsense to be littered like dump. And, if people try to survive, especially during these days, and if they just experienced (once more!) indifference, Klaus Doring arrogance, ignorance or cheating by whomever - they will give up!

I can assure you that every one of us can at first help in prayers and, in reading the bible.

“Proverbs” is the probably most down-to-earth book in the bible. Its teachings prepare you for the daily life, the street and the market place, but not for the schoolroom. The book offers warm pieces of advice you get; practical guidance for making your way on earth.

Proverbs covers any kinds of questions you might have right now. Anybody can relate to the generalities of Proverbs, because this book simply tells how life works most of the time.

While writing this piece, I observed that more and more people struggle through life: tired, hopeless, experiencing their rockbottoms, believing in fallacious “people” around them. I also observed a lot of people living a thief life, as if it it has been giving them without limitation.

IDC began in Cagayan de Oro and is proud of its Kagay-anon roots.

as what other success stories would share, it had also gone through hard times, and overcoming challenges with industry partners was one of its key ingredients of success.

Selling the first condo when house and lot was still a trend in this city caused frustrations to some sellers. Ms. Reprisima Guerrero, a top seller of Primavera, said, “Vertical developments received unfavorable views from our target market because of their misconceptions about condo living. Clients would tell us things like condominiums are too tall and expensive, it is not what they preferred to buy, instead they kept on looking for house and lot”. But not until such time that people from the local realized the edge of IDC’s condominiums over typical buildings or house and lot. According to Manny de Lara, a licensed broker, the green design

of Primavera projects is the company’s edge. “To the eyes of the residents, it is a different type of living. It is more favorable to the people who are always on the go”. Shim Suan, a licensed broker and accredited seller, also shared his experience in selling IDC’s project: “I had a client before who asked me why he needs to live in a condo. After realizing that the project introduces green features: natural ventilation and solar panels, he got the eagerness to buy the product. Primavera is less expensive to live in, wellventilated, and different from other condos”.

While the company was at first criticized for investing a condominium development in Cagayan de Oro City, far from the central district of Metro Manila, it seems that its confidence and persistence paid off in the long run. For Mr. & Mrs. Carretas, who were

pioneer sellers of IDC, they could say now that Cagayan de Oro sees the number of condominiums is increasing over time because people nowadays opt for condo living as their investment, too.

At the same time, Ms. Christine Tenchavez, a broker of IDC, shared, “I feel honored being part of the growth of Italpinas Development Corporation. Seeing my satisfied clients at Primavera Residences is very rewarding.

In the case of employers, they can add newly hired employees and indicate separated employees. For individual members, they can change the applicable period if they want to make advance payments for a year, and change the amount of contribution if their monthly earnings have increased or decreased.

Upon validation and confirmation of the e-CL or SOA, the e-CS shall automatically generate a Payment Reference Number (PRN) that will be used mandatorily by the employer or member in paying SSS contributions at any accredited payment facility.

All bank and nonbank collection partners are required to shift to the e-CS using PRN as basis for payment acceptance.

“All SSS branch tellering facilities and non-bank payment partners will implement real-time posting of SSS contribution payments starting January 16, 2018. All commercial and universal banks are required to convert their current manual

processing of SSS contribution collections and report submission into the e-CS with PRN
