And what better occasion to launch the initiative dubbed GabayKristo in Northern

Mindanao than the centenary of the birth of Misamis Oriental’s most illustrious statesman,

Brief Biography of Emmanuel N. Pelaez Born on November 30, 1915 in Medina, Misamis Oriental to Gregorio Pelaez and Felipa Neri, Emmanuel “Maning” N. Pelaez was educated at the Cagayan de Oro Elementary School where he graduated valedictorian. He finished his high school at the Ateneo de Manila High School and got his Associate in Arts at the UP Cebu Junior College.

Pelaez earned his law degree in 1938 at the University of Manila and topped the Bar examinations in the same year. He worked in various capacities at the Philippine Senate and practiced law with two firms before becoming Special Prosecutor of the People’s Court, eventually being elected Congressman of the lone district of Misamis in1949.

During his term in 1949-1953, he was named one of the Ten Outstanding Congressmen by the Congressional Press Club, one of the Ten Most Useful Congressmen by the Philippine Free Press, and one of the two Most Outstanding Congressmen by the League of Women Voters of the Philippines.

From 1953-1960 he served as a Senator and was unanimously cited Most Outstanding Senator by the Senate Press Club and the League of Women Voters of the Philippines.

He was elected Vice President in 1961, and was appointed Foreign Affairs Secretary by then President Diosdado Macapagal but resigned in 1963 after a dispute with the Macapagal administration.

Nevertheless, his performance earned him Man of the Year honors by the Examiner and the Most Outstanding Alumnus during the Golden Jubilee Celebration of the University of Manila.

Pelaez was again elected as Congressman in 1965, and two years later, as Senator, a post he held until the September 1972 proclamation of martial law. Although he reverted to private life after an attempted

assassination and to devote more time to his family and law practice, he nevertheless continued to take an active interest in public affairs.

In 1973, President Marcos designated him as a member of the Philippine panel in the military bases negotiations with the United States.

This was his second time to serve the panel, the first being in 1956 when he was the spokesman of the panel in the RP-US military bases negotiations.

He served later as Philippine Ambassador to the United States under the administration of President Corazon C. Aquino, who also named him Head of the Rural Electrification Commission, which earned him the moniker "Father of Rural Electrification He immersed himself actively in various civic, professional and religious societies: as Chairman of the Cadang-Cadang Research Foundation of the Philippines, Inc., the first Filipino scientific research foundation jointly financed by the government and the private sector for the eradication of cadangcadang which had threatened to wipe out the coconut industry; headed the Philippine Coconut Planters Association, MindanaoSulu-Palawan Association and the Philippine National Red Cross Fund Drive in Mindanao (1958).

Pelaez married Edith Fabella with whom he had nine children: Emmanuel Jr., Ernesto, Elena, Esperanza, Eloisa, Eduardo, Enrique, Edmundo and Elvira.

The failed assassination attempt prompted Pelaez to end his political career and devote his life to Bible studies. He served twice as President of the Philippine Bible Society and Chairman of its Board of Directors, and was later made Honorary President for life by the organization.

He passed away on July 27, 2003 at the Asian Hospital and Medical Center in Muntinlupa City.

Christian voters are encouraged to undertake a Christ-centered discernment to arrive at their personal choices for President, Vice President and Senator using the Gabay-Kristo as their guide.

“This is the first time in history that you have Catholics, Protestants, and Evangelicals, coming together on a united front,” said lawyer Spanky Meer of the Catholic group Ligaya ng Panginoon (Joy of the Lord).

The Emmanuel Pelaez Foundation aims to perpetuate the legacy of the late statesman by sponsoring the Emmanuel Pelaez Leadership and campaigns programs.

“The people are best served by passionate individuals who fight for their principles,”said his son, the late Ernesto Pelaez during the 2008 launch of his father’s biography “What’s Happening to Our Country? The Life and Times of Emmanuel Pelaez.”

In a telling incident retold in the book, journalist-historian Nelson Navarro relates how the late statesman chose to abide by a “gentleman’s agreement” with the late Ferdinand Marcos on a ‘clean and honest’ campaign for the Nationalista Party’s nomination during its November 1964 convention. As Diosdado Macapagal’s former Vice President, Pelaez was then the NP’s preferred candidate for president.

“What kind of a president would I make if I were to indulge in such activities?” Maning indignantly replied when his counselors advised him to match Marcos’ dirty tricks to buy votes.

“I’d rather be right than be president!”

The country lost its golden chance when Marcos bought his way to the nomination and eventually the dictatorship that eventually made the Philippines “The Sick Man of Asia.”

Maning loved to relate how his concept of public service took shape under the guidance of a young Jesuit priest during his formative years which renowned painter Anita MagsaysayHo immortalized in her painting “The Washing of the Feet.” (see related story on page 3) While still in high school at the Ateneo de Intramuros, he came under the tutelage of a young Jesuit from the U.S., Fr. John Patrick Delaney, S.J. who told them: "If you are after personal advantage, if you are seeking personal and material success, then public service is not the career for you. Public service is an apostleship of sacrifice and service.

You must use it to give of yourself unsparingly in the service of your people, not to make something for yourself."

"If I had my way," Fr, Delaney said, "I would put in the office of every public official the picture of Christ washing the feet of the apostles to remind them that even God went down on his knees to serve his fellowmen.

This must be the symbol of service for all public officials."

Born November 30, 2015, he served multiple terms as congressman and senator, reaching his pinnacle as Vice President in 1961-1965, when the Philippines became one of the most respected and economically vigorous countries in Asia. He also served later as Agriculture Secretary and Philippine Ambassador to the United States.

Following a Monday Morning memorial mass at the Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, the Emmanuel Pelaez Foundation and Brotherhood of Christian Businessmen and Professionals (BCBP) will host an Integrity Forum to launch the Gabay-Kristo (Christ-Guide) advocated by the Pilipino Movement for Transformational Politics (PMTL).

Public Service Immortalized by 3 True Christian Servants We are republishing this article in commemoration of the 100th birth anniversary of the late Vice President Emmanuel “Maning” Pelaez on November 30, 2015

n the place of honor on the living room wall of the Pelaez residence in Ayala Alabang hangs a painting entitled “The Washing of the Feet” by the renowned painter Anita Magsaysay-Ho. The late vice president and ambassador to the U.S. Emmanuel “Maning” Pelaez liked telling his guests the story about how the painting came to be.

In an article published April 17, 1960 in “The Citizen”, the late statesman tells about how the painting was directly related to his concept of public service which took shape under the guidance of a young Jesuit priest during his formative years.

When Mr. Pelaez was still in high school at the Ateneo de Intramuros (the campus moved to Padre Faura in 1932 after the Intramuros campus was razed by fire), American Jesuits had taken over its administration and he came under the tutelage of a young Jesuit from the U.S., Fr. John Patrick Delaney, S.J. “I remember many things about Father

Years later, Mrs. Anita Magsaysay-Ho, the distinguished Filipina painter, noted the print of the Washing of the Feet hanging on my office wall. When she asked me about it, I told her the story of Fr. Delaney and how the picture had come to symbolize my personal concept of public service.

Mrs. Magsaysay-Ho was so fascinated by the idea of having the spirit of the Washing of the Feet hover over public officials as they discharge their functions that she later executed her own version of the Washing of the Feet and presented it to me as a gift.

“To me, it is more than a gift of a friend-it symbolizes my ideal of public service; it is a constant reminder that a public servant cannot be true to his office unless he imbues it with a Christlike spirit of service to his fellowmen.”

The Pelaez family plans to distribute prints of “The Washing of the Feet” to all LGU heads all over the country.

“In this way, we can share Papa’s legacy of his concept of public service for all public servants as inspired by Fr. Delaney and brought to life in Mrs. Magsaysay Ho’s painting, in the way Fr. Delaney wanted it to be.”

A priest who believed in teaching honesty and integrity, a public servant who believed and lived it, and an artist inspired to pass it on as a legacy to future generations, all coming together to bring hope that true public service is an attainable ideal in the

Philippine bureaucracy.

Fr. James Reuter, S.J. relates a story told by one of Fr. Delaney’s students about their first exam as high school freshmen: Father Delaney said: “Gentlemen, I am leaving you alone to take this exam. You will now learn whether or not you have character.”

And he left the classroom!

Challenged that way, the boys were all honest. No one cheated.

But they all got low marks! But when they went to Father Delaney and pleaded with him to let them retake the exam because not one of them cheated, he replied: “No. The marks stay as they are.

That is the second lesson you have to learn: whenever you are honest, you have to pay for it.”

Born in Manila in 1914, Ms. Magsaysay-Ho gained international acclaim when her 1956 master piece In the Marketplace fetched US$669,250 at an auction in Christie’s Singapore in 1999. She was recognized by National Artist Victorio Edades as one of the “13 Moderns” of the country and vindicated that accolade by winning the Art Association of the Philippines annual competitions with The Cooks (1952) and Two Women (1960).

Although she can no longer be nominated as a National Artist since she is now a Canadian citizen, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts says she can still be nominated as such if she opts for dual citizenship.

Apple Tree Resort and Hotel Official Statement The New Zealand representative of the Mister and Miss Pancontinental 2015 International Pageant, Nicole Harding, made a hasty exit from the pageant. In light of the controversy surrounding her exit and due to our involvement in the pageant, ATRH is releasing this official statement.

We signed into agreement with the event organizer, Blue Circle Events and Management Inc., to accommodate them on November 22-25, 2015 granting that we can only offer the available rooms due to prior guaranteed bookings.

Nonetheless, we agreed to host the pageant's Swimwear Competition on November 24, 2015.

At the time of their arrival on the 22nd, the group came from an overnight stay in a bed & breakfast hotel along Corrales Ext., Cagayan de Oro City as mentioned by the Organizers.

We warmly welcomed the group, composed of the contestants accompanied by their country directors, and working committee of the pageant, in the evening of November 22, 2015 (Sunday).

In Apple Tree Resort and Hotel (ATRH), the group conducted rehearsals and blocking for the pageant in the evening of November 23, 2015 (Monday). On November 24, 2015 (Tuesday) the Photo Session commenced and was followed by the Swimwear Competition at 10:30 AM and the Resorts Wear Competition, at 6:00 PM. All members of the group were billeted in ATRH's Lanai and Deluxe Superior Rooms. Both room categories have a spacious room size of 26 square meters and more-than-adequate furnishings.

All of the group's activities within ATRH, including rehearsals and blocking, Photo Session and Resorts Wear Competition, were coordinated, well-assisted and well-staged.

Throughout their stay, the group was given the excellent attention and service that ATRH is known for.

While the competition went smoothly, pre-production was allegedly not as smooth.

Up until November 22, the final date of the competition was left unconfirmed by the event's Cagayanbased organizer, Lourdes Stanley.

Ms. Stanley gave a November 23 date while Project Manager Cheryl Macale gave November 24 for the Swim wear Competition.

Our constant follow-up to Ms. Stanley ended with her promise to see us on the eve of November 22.

Unfortunately, she didn't come.

The pageant's Manila-based Host Country Organizer Mylene Miranda arrived to intervene early in the evening of the 22nd. It was through her that we finally received the details promised to us by Ms. Stanley.

We would later find out that this and other inconsistencies were due to a "disconnect" between Ms. Miranda and Ms. Stanley.

While we cannot comment on anyone else's behalf, we wish Ms. Miranda well in seeking light for the alleged anomalies caused by her local counterparts.

For the sake of local tourism and Cagayan de Oro's credibility, we have faith that the local government and tourism sector will investigate and clear this issue.

Music and Religion Music and religion belong together like fish and the ocean, light and life, the voice and the ear. In the entire universe, we humans are probably the only beings capable of creating and hearing music.

The ability to hear is one of the specific gifts that our Creator gave us. Our more and more fragile blue planet is surrounded by a thin layer of gases only a few kilometers high. Only this atmosphere is the reason why sound waves can spread through the air.

Everything behind this atmosphere is ruled by the sheer endless vacuum of outer space, where galaxies and stars explode

and implode in impenetrable silence.

I always thought about it while being on air with several radio music programs in the Philippines during the last 15 years.

According to the biblical narrative, the world began when God broke through this deadly quiet: “And God said: Let there be light!”

(Genesis 1:1). God spoke - and light and life resulted from His audible voice. Because life was created by the word, it depends on the word. That is why it is in the nature of every person to listen.

Like a parabolic mirror, our souls are created

to listen to the eternal space of the hereafter, to try and sense whether a word, a sound or a voice is trying to reach us from there, in order to fill us with meaning.

I love music. I can’t live without.

Hold on, this is not one of my earlier columns in this paper. But from time to time, I need to express myself if it comes to this topic. And, I know, that Filipinos love big tunes with great words and beautiful melodies, especially, when it comes to classical music. Classical music as in Ludwig van Beethoven, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Frederic Chopin, or especially now, during the season

The GABAYKRISTO contains 20 criteria for choosing Christian leaders formulated by the PMTL which are grouped into 4 major areas: Karakter at Karangalan, Kakayanan at Abilidad, Katapatan sa Diyos at sa Kapwa, and Katotohanan sa Pamumuno at Pamunoan.

Each criterion will be ranked on a scale of 1 to 5, (with 1 being the lowest and 5 the highest).

The GABAYKRISTO has 100 points as the highest possible score and 20 as the lowest.

PMTL voters are encouraged to undertake a Christ-centered discernment to arrive at their personal choices for President, Vice President and Senator using the GABAYKRISTO as their guide.

"If we are able to make all our Christian brethren use the GABAYKRISTO in selecting our nation's leaders in 2016, we can stand tall knowing that we have been able to achieve our objectives," Bishop Abante said.

Democracy at stake In his keynote address during the launch, former

Supreme Court Chief Justice Reynato Puno stressed the need for change in our political systems and electoral process.

"It is the future of democracy that is on the line in every election.

In truth, it is not the unsuccessful candidate who is the greatest loser in a manipulated and fraudulent election, but we, the people, whose right to vote is desecrated," he added.

“Let us fight for the sanctity of our right to vote, lest our treasured democracy becomes simply a tyranny of the powerful which manipulates the majority,” Puno urged.

The PMTL will now focus on the inviting more Christian communities and organizing The People's Choice National Convention.

BOREROS and VICTORIA B.MAKIPUTIN, both of legal age, Filipino and residents of Alta Tierra in Napolan, and Dao, respectively, all in Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur, where they may be served with summons and other court processes; 2. In paragraph 10 of the Promissory Note [copies made Annexes “B” and “B-1” hereof ], the Plaintiff and Defendants have expressly agreed that any action to enforce payment of any sums due under this Note shall exclusively be brought in the proper court within National Capital Judicial Region or in any place where Radiowealth Finance Company, Inc. has a branch/office, as its sole option. Pursuant thereto, the Plaintiff has opted to file the instant case in the Regional Trial Court of Misamis Oriental stationed in Cagayan de Oro City; 3. On February 28, 2015, for value received, the Defendants executed and delivered to herein Plaintiff at its Pagadian Branch, a Promissory Note in the sum of Six Hundred Thousand Forty Eight Pesos [₱600,048.00] payable on installments according to the schedule of payments indicated in said Promissory Note [Annex “B”, infra] and Disclosure Statement of Loan/Credit Transaction, copy made Annex “C” hereof; 4. To secure payment of the Promissory Note, the Defendants executed in favor of the Plaintiff, a Chattel Mortgage duly registered in the proper Register of Deeds and Land Transportation Office involving a motor vehicle particularly described as follows:

The copies of the Chattel Mortgage, Cer tificate of Registration and Official Receipt of owner, made Annexes “D” and “D-1”, “E” and “F” hereof, respectively; 5. The Defendants have been in arrears for five and a half [5 ½] months of their monthly amor tization as of March 13, 2015, thereby leaving an account balance of Three Hundred Eighty Four Thousand Two Hundred Nineteen [₱384,219.00] Philippine Currency as may be shown in Customer’s Visit Card, copy made Annex “G” hereof; 6. The Plaintiff sent three [3] Demand Letters [copies made Annexes “H”, “I” and “J”] dated December 15,2014, December 22,2014 and February 2,2015 upon Defendant Alma B. Boreros who refused to accept and receive the same. On February 2, 2015, Plaintiff also sent a Demand Letter [copy made Annexes “k” and “k-1”] to Defendant Victoria B. Makiputin as co-maker and the same was received by her brother Eddie S. Bargayo on March 24, 2015. And despite all these, the Defendants failed to settle their account balance with the Plaintiff prompting the latter to seek the aid of the Honorable Court; 7. Plaintiff hereby applies for an Order of the Honorable Court for the immediate delivery of the above-described motor vehicle from the Defendants pending termination of this case on the merits. For this purpose, there are attached an Affidavit and the Replevin Bond [copies made Annexes “L” and “M” respectively hereof ] which is double the value of the motor vehicle to answer for the damages and cost that the Defendants may suffer, if the Writ of Replevin prayed for was not properly issued;

To institute the present action, the Plaintiff has contracted the services of counsel in the agreed sum equivalent to 20% of the account due and demandable [par 9, PN, Annex B-1 infra] and ₱ 1,500.00 per court appearance; WHEREFORE, the Plaintiff prays that pending trial on the merits, an Order be issued directing the said Defendants and/or their Agents to deliver said motor vehicle to Plaintiff and to authorize the Sheriff to take possession of and dispose the same in accordance with law. In the event however, that said motor vehicle cannot be recovered, the said Defendants be ordered to pay the sum of ₱384,219.00 representing the unpaid balance plus 20% thereof as and by way of attorney’s fee, ₱1,500.00 per court appearance, the litigation and incidental expenses and cost of the suit.
