He finished his high school and college education at Ateneo de Zamboanga University where he graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication.

His journey to success begins at age 17 when in the summer of 2004, he travelled to Northern Illinois University, Illinois, USA as an exchange scholar from Mindanao. This was under the Philippine Youth Leadership Program funded by the US State Department. student leaders from the top universities and colleges all over the country. Accordingly, one has to be nominated first by the School Head in order to qualify. It was at this time, that Kenny entertained the idea of being based in a highly urbanized area like Makati. “During the final i nte r v i e w, I re me mb e r looking out the window with the view of the financial district and telling a friend that I will not work outside Zamboanga after college unless it was going to be in Makati,” he said. This seemed like a premonition because as soon as he graduated from college, one of the first job offers he got was to be part of a management training program of a prestigious universal bank. “Their Head Office was along Ayala Avenue and I felt that it was the best decision to accept their offer”. Ke n ny h u r d l e d t h e seven long, rigid and arduous months during the training program. His classmates included brilliant fresh graduates from top universities, the University of the Philippines (UP), University of Santo Tomas (UST) and San Beda College as well as internal employees who were due for promotion. “I had to wake up really early and study because I had no financial or accounting background unless most of my classmates. The other challenge was to commute from Paranaque, where I stayed with our relatives, to Makati. I was on my own, for the first time. It was scary and uncertain but I just thought that I had to try my best to finish the program.” Hi s h a rd w or k a n d determination paid off. He passed the program

along with 24 others and was promoted to Assistant Manager at 20 years old. He stayed in Makati where his assignment was until he returned to his hometown in 2010 until 2012. According to him, he wanted to spend time with his parents as a young adult in order to try to give back what is due to his loved ones. A f te r a ye ar i n h i s hometown, a savings bank saw his potential and offered him a Branch Manager position. From his first employer, he moved to this new company and became their youngest Branch Manager. He was only 24 years old when he opened the bank’s newest branch in Zamboanga. “It was very challenging. Managing a branch is indeed difficult than my previous stints. But I learned much. I had to look out for people, from my new accounts personnel to the security staff. It is always a collaboration and team effort when you are in the branch.” Eventually, he decided to move back to Manila to stand on his own feet and pursue his big dreams. “I knew from the start that I was not going to stay in my hometown when I decided to return. When the time felt right and an opportunity came along, I grabbed it”. Kenny returned to Manila to do business development for retail banking. “I have always been the type who loves to explore and I don’t mind getting out of my comfort zone. I thrive in unfamiliar places. I think I am an eternal optimist that is why it is easy for me to adjust. On top of that, I am goal-oriented. I just believe that somehow, I will overcome the challenges and be triumphant!” His daring quality seemed to be the perfect ingredient for his current position. Last year, at the age of 27, he was

offered a senior position in United Coconut Planters Bank (UCPB) to be one of their and Assistant Vice President and one of the R el at ionship Managers for Corporate Banking in Mindanao. “I am the person to approach to if companies, specifically small and medium enterprises, have working capital or financing requirements.” Kenny added that it was actually the job itself that convinced him to accept the offer and move back to Mindanao. “You reach a certain age and feel that you have found your niche. I have been exposed to diverse departments in the banking industr y and have been assigned a series of different jobs. Account management for the middle market or the small and medium enterprises was the most fulfilling stint I had. That is why I felt at home when I took the offer and started doing it again.” Kenny loves to travel, and he has been to Asia and these travels helped

him in his f lourishing career in terms of having a perspective. He especially enjoyed Balinese and in his intimate encounters with the elephants in a sanctuary in Chiang Mai. “We fed and bathed them!” He also enjoys travelling with the Philippines. One of his most unforgettable experiences was swimming and interacting with the whale sharks at Donsol in Sorsogon. He frequents to Bacolod for its gastronomic cuisines. H also loves adrenalin rushing outdoor adventure. “My newest interest is Flying Trapeze. But I don’t do it as often as I want to.” He disclosed of the hobby-sport that is currently available in Bonifacio Global City. When asked if there is a disadvantage to being young senior officer, he quipped, “Yes, of course. We constantly need to prove ourselves because normally we equate age with maturity. But for me experience is the best teacher and the good thing about it is it does not discriminate age.” MABUHAY KA KENNY!

Smart leads contenders in Telecom Asia Awards

Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) has emerged as the top contender at the 18th Telecom Asia Awards, where 37 telecommunications companies from 12 Asia Pacific countries are vying for 15 citations. Smart is tied with Australia’s Telstra for the most nominations, with seven each. The Telecom Asia Awards is the region’s longestrunning telecom industry awards, organized annually by Telecom Asia, the region’s largest telecom publishing group. Smart is a finalist for Best Emerging Market Operator, for launching the Free Internet promo last year to provide 30 MB of free mobile data per day to 70 million Smart, Sun Cellular, and Talk ‘N Text subscribers. This move empowered Filipinos to use a suite of relevant digital services, like the homegrown music application SPINNR; GameX, the online store for prepaid game codes and gift cards which is nominated for Best Mobile Payment Service; and the video streaming app Viewstream, which is shortlisted for Most Innovative

Video Service Project. What makes these services doubly relevant and convenient is that they can be availed of without a credit card. Service costs can be charged against the users’ prepaid load or postpaid bill. Meanwhile, Smart’s president and chief executive officer Napoleon L. Nazareno is in the running for Telecom CEO of the Year, a distinction he already received in 2012. The partnership between Smart e-Money, Inc. (SMI) and Land Bank of the Philippines (LANDBANK) is nominated for the Most Innovative Partnership award. The two successfully rolled out the mobile cash transfer program for survivors of Supertyphoon Yolanda. This was a payment fulfillment facility for the cash-forwork disaster relief intervention of the United Nations Development Programme. SMI and LANDBANK also launched the Mobile Loan Saver program which enables government employees to secure a bank loan using their mobile phone.

ASEAN Scholarships Opening of Applications in the Philippines

The New Zealand Government through the New Zealand Aid Programme offers scholarships for eligible postgraduate students from the Philippines to undertake development-related studies at a tertiary institution in New Zealand. An indicative allocation of 18 scholarships is made available for Filipinos who wish to obtain a postgraduate degree (i.e. postgraduate diplomas, masters degrees or doctorates) in New Zealand commencing in 2016. New Zealand ASEAN Scholarships empower individuals with the knowledge, skills, and qualifications to contribute to economic, social, and political development within the Philippines. The scholarships aim to contribute to the achievement of Philippine human resource development objectives, particularly in areas where New Zealand has recognized expertise. Priority themes for this year are agriculture development, renewable energy, disaster risk management, public sector management and private sector development. Applications are welcome from the public, private and civil society sectors. Deadline for application for the 2016 school year is 31 July 2015. The Bato Balani Foundation Inc. with its commitment of uplifting the quality of education in the country is assisting the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) through the New Zealand Embassy in searching for Filipinos who will most benefit from the opportunity to study in New Zealand and will contribute to the development of the Philippines on their return. I really appreciated when, just recently, Capitol University in Cagayan de Oro asked me to join a brilliant and for them overdue initiative to enhance ties between the University (academe) and the industry (employers) by forming a University’s Advisory Council. Representatives and stakeholders from the private and public sector met with the deans of the faculties for an exchange of views and confrontation of mutual expectations. I met people from banking, real estate development, business process outsourcing, IT, police, the city’s engineering office and many other industries. While the

Here is the next chapter: Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis has criticized the Eurogroup for being unwilling to adapt to new situations. He also insisted a new bailout would be unnecessary if creditors were willing to restructure Greece’s debt. Wow. Again strong words! Negotiations between Athens and its international creditors are moving closer to a deal, according to the yesterday’s Sunday edition of the German Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung daily. Although it seemed unlikely that an agreement could be struck before Greece

And not only me! Varoufakis also dismissed reports that his fellow EU finance

ministers insulted him with epithets like “gambler” and “amateur” at a tense summit in Riga on April 24. “Those would have surely been heavy offenses if they had been expressed. But they were not,” he told the paper. Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras was forced to reshuffle the negotiating team after relations between Varoufakis and his peers deteriorated following the Riga meeting. Technical experts from the Eurogroup and Greece have been in talks all weekend in an effort to resolve differences in order to unlock the remaining EU-IMF bailout money. With the success of the Skim-Boarding Competition during the 2nd Kabaybayonan Music and Sports Festival last April 10, 2015 held at the Apple Tree Resort and Hotel and the request of the majority, another competition was formulated and be realized this summer season. The event coined as “SHORE BREAKS” was created in order to promote the sport to Northern Mindanao and provides opportunities to the youth to actively engage in programs and activities which upholds the quality of life. It also create and develop an understanding of the importance of sport in the pursuit of a healthy and active lifestyle and to persevere in order to achieve success. According to Ms Bjanesha M. Emphasis, the General Manager of the said Resort Hotel, “the event is set to be an annual celebration of the sport and/or twice a year eyeing for

the month of May and October.” She added, “We decided to do so in order to provide a sense of community and allows the sport to progress in ways that never seen before”. Skim-boarding (or skimming) is board-sport similar to surfing which takes place near the shore and uses a skimboard in order to glide across the water’s surface to meet an incoming, breaking wave, shorebreak, and ride it back to shore. Skim-boarding has a rich history. What started over 60 years ago at Laguna Beach, Southern California on round wood boards by the Laguna lifeguards has evolved into a highly competitive water sport. Accordingly, most people know skim-boarding as “that thing you do on the sand,” and while this is true, skimboarding has become so much more than that. Skim-boarding has developed since then to ride waves much like surfing, performing aerial maneuvers and pulling into the barrel of the wave. Philippines and abroad. How to mould students into a successful adult has always been a delicate task for the academe with parents, religion and even politics wanting to have their say. I was not surprised at all to learn about the comments of the representatives of the Advisory Council. Apart from requesting a “basic competence” from the academe, topping the list of desired skills by the industries there was “good communication skills” followed by “positive attitude” and “determination”. It ultimately all revolves around a proper psychological preparation and an effective personality development. Too often these things are not addressed at all in college or university but offered instead in costly

extracurricular seminars of which I have had the privilege to attend a few, hold lectures and develop programs for. On the other hand a great example of partnership and active communication between academe and industry is Primavera’s successful recruitment of a few former students from Capitol University that today make great employees, have contributed to strengthen the company and are an asset to the overall organisation. Definitely there should be more communication between Universities, Colleges and the various industries or employers. When I personally choose a new recruit I disregard the person’s academic background and I try to focus on the applicant’s psychological preparation, the capability of withstanding pressure, his/her communication skills, his/her personality strength and the willingness to learn and sacrifice. Often I notice some discrepancies between their dreams or life goals and their chosen academic paths. The reason behind maybe is that too often it is the parents who choose the student’s academic paths leading to lots of frustration and wasted years.
