he Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) is still open for the submission of nominees for 6th RAFI Triennial Awards.

The submission of nominees has been extended till May 31st to cater more nominees for a comprehensive search for dedicated individuals and institutions in serving the public.

Held every three years, the RAFI Triennial Awards gives recognition to individuals and institutions that made exemplary service to the community and changed the lives of the many.

The Don Ramon Aboitiz Award for Exemplary Individual is for every Filipino citizen, aged 30 above, who showed real dedication in public service.

The Don Eduardo Aboitiz Award for Outstanding Institution is for government, nongovernment, civic or people’s organizations, which have been established for three years, who are comprehensive and brought responsible development to the community.

The nominees will undergo an extensive screening process, which will start when individuals and institutions are slated for nomination. Self-nomination is discouraged.

A search committee composed of representatives from the media, academia, business groups, and people’s organizations or non-government organizations, leads the short listing of nominees and selection of finalists, before the RAFI Board of Trustees selects the awardees.

Winners of each award category will be given a trophy, cash prize of not less than PHP 400, 000 and the opportunity to travel in the Visayas and Mindanao to share their expertise and involvement to various groups.

“They will become one of our speakers and would go around in Visayas and Mindanao to speak about their experiences and inspire other people.” Jocelyn Gerra, Culture & Heritage Executive Director for RAFI, said.

The NCC named Cagayan de Oro City the most competitive in the city for 2013 based on survey results submitted in 2012.

Creatures of Habit

T

hink a minute…

You’ve probably heard the expression “A leopard can’t change its spots.” This, of course, is true of leopards.

But is it true of people? Can people change? Are we humans just creatures of habit? Do we not have any control over our actions and habits?

One guy said, “Bad habits are like a comfortable bed: they’re easy to get into, but hard to get out of.” Someone else said: “The chains of habits are too small to feel until they’re too strong to break.” So ‘breaking the mold’ of our bad habits takes effort, yet one of the greatest freedoms in life is the freedom from bad habits.

Habits are like the roads we take through life everyday. The problem is that not every road takes us where we need to go.

Actually, our routes through life often become our ruts in life.

We end up stuck in them and find it hard to dig ourselves out.

That’s why we must change our bad habits as soon as possible before they become our ‘second

nature’. You see, our habits become our character and our character becomes our life. As one wise person said: “First we make our habits, then our habits make us.”

But we humans don’t like to change, do we? So we come up with excuses, like: “I can’t be different; that’s just the way I am.” Or we say: “I was born this way.” And the good ol’ saying: “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” But that’s just it: we’re not dogs or animals. In fact, we’re the only creatures who have the freedom and power to change and choose the kind of person we become.

So what habits do you need to start changing today? You know, there’s one bad habit you need to change first, that will help you change all your other habits.

It’s the habit of living your own way, instead of your Maker ’s way. He’s the only one who knows the road to the best, most satisfying life for you. So today, won’t you ask Jesus Christ to forgive you, and to take full charge of your habits and life?

Wishing for Rain

D

on't get me wrong, I love bright and sunny days but experiencing this very hot season has made me think of begging the heavens for just a day of rain or two.

To be soaked in raint is recommended for my sanity and for the sake of the plants and soil that seems to hang on for dear life with this too much hot and humid weather.

This kind of weather is good in staying indoors, turning on the airconditioner in full blast or a nonstop electric fan but it seems it's not going to happen as well!

The electric companies are not on our side on this one.

They implement power interruptions on days that we need cooling the most.

Oh well, at least this time we do not find their moves dubious since it's not election season!

A little bit of rain would really all do us good. People are getting antsy and literally hotheaded lately!

Going to the malls to cool off is an option but traveling to and fro is a not so comfortable experience.

So the option is to just stay put

and wait until the sun comes down.

Actually, I am writing this article drenched in sweat, gulping loads of cold water and trying to concentrate while enduring a hot roof above my head.

This is perhaps the ironic thing about being human.

When it is hot, we want it to be cold and when the rains decide to come, we beg for sunshine.

Life is indeed complicated and we add to its complexity without even knowing it.

To cool down we turn on so much electricity which consumes so much energy, an energy which causes problems that make the world even hotter than it used to be.

I wonder if this modern cycle will ever be reversed.

If it will, then that's going to be good news for you and me and the young ones.

Going back to my wish for rain, I really hope it will be soon and really just enough to quench the dry earth.

For sure, that's going to be a truly cool break from this dry spell!

irls and women struggle constantly, fighting a battle deep within themselves because of ideals ingrained into them.

The truth is that beauty comes from your "imperfections" and "flaws." Those are the features that make you unique because we weren't meant to be the cookie cutter versions of the next female in line.

Beauty hurts because we try to mold ourselves to what we were taught is beautiful instead of embracing all of who we are and knowing that that is beautiful.

It’s always been the case; women constantly want to look like girls on covers of magazines, or models on the runway that look too skinny to be healthy.

The world pressures real women to look like generic Barbies by altering what they already have, altering the things that make them real.

Society has driven women to extremes, nose jobs, lip jobs, Botox, breast enhancements, and whitening.

They tend to think that if they alter or enhance something about themselves, they’ll look prettier.

Pretty is the notion that we collectively think of as the universal “OK” or a standard that women and girls should look like.

Countless women torture themselves and make themselves

feel bad because they do not fit a size zero.

They want to be 5’5, with brown eyes, big breasts, small waists, and nice thighs.

And because they only see themselves through society’s eyes, they try and they cry because they’ll never look like girls in the magazines and they’ll never have that hourglass figure that they pine for all their lives.

So many lives are lost to eating disorders because girls feel bad about their bodies.

This is all because society thinks that these girls are too fat, too ugly, or not white enough.

What girls and women need to do is accept themselves, flaws and all because it’s the little things that make them unique individuals who are strong because they’ve gone through so much.

Society should not be able to control what beauty looks like because beauty comes from within and from the flaws a person possesses.

Beauty is how they take these flaws and turn them into strengths by accepting that this is how they were born, this is how they were made to be and not in any way meant to be altered.

Real girls aren’t perfect, they aren’t a size zero, they are all different and unique in their own special ways which is how they stand out from one another.

All their imperfections make them real, and believable.

Perfect should be a celebration of all the weird and all the flaws that one possesses because once society stops focusing on these flaws and appreciate women as unique individuals, all kinds of perfect start emerging from the mosh pit of flaws, weird quirks, and imperfections.

Beauty is complex and multifaceted.

But the great shame about how we talk about beauty is that we often see it only in terms of the physical – that which meets the eye. But I think when most of us “feel” most beautiful, is when we’re confident, when we’re happy, when we’re doing something that is kind and compassionate and loving; something that doesn’t necessarily have to do with our appearance.

At the end of the day, it’s not anyone else’s responsibility to make you feel beautiful; it’s yours.

And despite all the science, all the social constructions, all the rhetoric, all the marketing, all the magazines, I think feeling beautiful comes down to believing that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts; that you – all of you – is much greater than any imperfections that you may have.

And that’s something beautiful that we can all work on.

Menarini launches “Commit to Control PE” advocacy for Filipino couples

enarini, the world’s largest Italian biopharmaceutical company in the world, launched the “Commit to Control PE” advocacy for couples recently at the Marquee Hall of Edsa Shangri-La Manila. With the aim to educate Filipino couples on the issue of premature ejaculation (PE), Menarini invited celebrity couples and medical practitioners to discuss the issue and provide significant insights and suggestions on how to deal and overcome the disorder.

According to Dr. Cai de Quiroz, medical director of Menarini, one in three men suffer from PE and that 20% of relationships and marriages break down because of it. Perceived causes of PE among Filipino men include stress (47%), unhealthy lifestyle (40%), fatigue

(38%), and anxiety (38%).

Because the issue has always been kept under the sheets, so to speak, Menarini believes that there is a need to discuss the topic of PE especially that 83% of Filipino men and 82% of Filipino women agree that mutual sexual satisfaction plays a very important role in a successful relationship.

Cagayan de Oro City -- What gets measured, gets managed. The Geodetic Engineers of the Philippines, Regional Division 10 held their 39th Regional Convention and Technical Symposium at Grand Caprice, Limketkai Center, this city, May 2 and 3, 2014.

The Geodetic Engineers delegates came from Camiguin Island, Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental, Bukidnon, Lanao del Norte and other parts of the region.

Geodesy or Geodetics, a branch of applied mathematics and earth sciences, is the scientific discipline that deals with the measurement and representation of the Earth, including its gravitational field.

This convention is an annual gathering for the Geodetic Engineers of the Philippines and a mandatory activity based on their constitution and bylaws.

Aside from the fact that this convention is a mandate, this

event also serves as an avenue for the Geodetic Engineers to hold their election, for fellowship and camaraderie, also to broaden their knowledge about their profession.

With this year’s theme: “Shifting to High Gear towards Integrity and Excellence in the Geodetic Engineering Profession”, the Geodetic Engineers’ goal is to become effective and powerful engineers in our society, to be able to provide a reliable solutions to any problem that will arise in the future, especially disasters.

Mitigating disasters is one of the major topics during the said convention. With their new strategies, methods and technologies for survey that they presented during the convention, geodetic engineers hope that they can help people be aware and perhaps prevented upcoming disasters.

One of their methods for this plan is the so called Mapping,

a representation of information using spatial relationships within the graphic to represent some relationships within the data.

In the contemporary sense of data visualization, it includes metaphorical extensions of geographical map agreements and literacies to other kinds of data, as well as innovative ways of visualizing data not clearly related to the geographical archetype.

In a much simpler sense, Mapping means organizing or systematizing information.

Through mapping, Geodetic Engineers will be alert if there’s an upcoming earthquake, climate zones or any other problems geographically and through that they will be able to broadcast to the public the result or their mapping method.

This annual convention hopes to be an effective avenue for our very own Filipino Geodetic Engineers to become globally effective and steadfast.
