I
T was the biggest Strike a Pose so far as the annual Gil Macaibay III summer fashion workshop 2017 edition culminated last Sunday at the spacious Grand Caprice Restaurant ballroom last Sunday in Cagayan de Oro City. More than a hundred enrolees of Strike a Pose 4, the two-day modelling crash course, filled the catwalk-laden floor of the restaurant in Gil Macaibay III designs as well as accessory shoes and bags from Spruce and eyewear from Specs. The models were
already pumped up in the workshop a week ago at 1A Express Hotel with inputs from supermodels Ann Casas and Jobo Roa as well as from Macaibay himself, the Prince of Haute Couture in this side of the country. Macaibay has consistently organized
the Strike a Pose yearly workshop now running for four consecutive years not just to help modelling aspirants in the city but also as a way to reach out to his favourite beneficiaries, the Balay Canossa Foundation and St. Joseph Home for the Aged. Youth rolls out waste segregation drive at the barangay level By MARK FRANCISCO

THE youth in Cagayan de Oro will assist the government in the strict implementation of the Solid Waste Management Act at the barangay level. But for now, the project initiated by the City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office (CLENRO) and a local non-government organization (NGO) will be pilot-tested in two barangays for a year. This early, around 60
volunteers from barangays Lapasan and Patag are already mapping several projects for their one-year calendar in relation to Solid Waste Management Act implementation in their respective villages, mostly educational drives. The youth will be assisted by an organization aptly called Empowering Volunteers and Opportunities (EVO). EVO will babysit the
youth groups and monitor their educational drives on a periodic basis to see their progress throughout the year. During a daylong meeting with the youth volunteers last Saturday, the participants finalized their schedule of activities to be conducted all throughout the duration of the project. PI Foundation once again brings us its most awaited Sinag 2017. For this year, the annual awards will be called BPI Sinag Accelerate. BPI Sinag Accelerate targets social
entrepreneurs whose enterprises are ready to scale up and expand while deepening their impact in community development. The program will put special focus on enterprises catering to agricultural
accommodations, IP communities, Muslim Mindanao and other marginalized communities. Awardees will have access to business boot camps and in-depth monitoring, a minimum of P100,000 to P500,000 in the form of cash grants and access to
industry networks and impact investors. BPI Foundation is looking for entrepreneurs 18 years old and above who are leading a registered social enterprise operating for at least two years which addresses a specific social problem and defined social impact.
The entrepreneur must have the vision to be a nation builder, innovative and entrepreneurial. Online applications which can be downloaded at the BPI Foundation website will be accepted until July 7. Bootcamp dates will be between August 7 to

Globe partners with teacher training Cebu Pacific to innovators for Global Filipino Schools program add 9 planes
Globe Telecom is collaborating with renowned teaching innovators in the country to kick off a series of teacher training workshops on 21st Century teaching methodologies and concepts to public school teachers in cooperation with the Department of Education (DepEd). The three teaching innovators—“Mano Amiga,” “Habi Education Lab” and “Affordable Private Education Center (APEC) Schools”—were chosen based on their excellent, innovative, and creative methods and approaches to learning. Mano Amiga Academy, Inc. is a nonprofit learning institution that provides low-income communities access to international quality education, sustainable livelihood and community development while Habi Education Lab is a design and research group that works to empower schools and educators on learning through capacitybuilding workshops and collaborative research projects. Among the topics to be introduced by the chosen teaching institutions during the intensive fiveday workshop are the integration of ICT in the classroom, design thinking and 21st Century learning approaches. The first of the three workshops will be conducted at the Globe Telecom training area in Bonifacio Global City in Taguig City. The objective is to transform 120 teachers from various provinces in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao and make them DepEd trainers and experts adept at providing 21st Century learning. They will
then be responsible for cascading what they learned during the workshops to the other public schools within their own divisions. This is in consonance with the GFS program’s goal of establishing teacher training hubs on 21st Century learning through public school partnerships. “We certainly look forward to sharing with the public sector our best practices in Mano Amiga. Being part of the GFS program is also an amazing opportunity for us to gain insights from the diverse participants who will come from different parts of the country. CEBU PACIFIC is using its P24-billion capital expenditure this year to add nine aircraft to its existing fleet. In an e-mail, the Gokongwei-led airline said this year’s capex will be used to acquire nine aircraft, of which four have already been delivered so far. “Cebu Pacific needs to expand its fleet to meet increasing demand for air travel and to mount new routes. Between 2017 and 2021, CEB expects deliver y of one more brand-new Airbus A330, 32 Airbus A321neo, and 11 ATR 72-600 aircraft,” it added. The Cebu Pacific group currently operates a fleet of 60 aircraft -- four Airbus A319; 36 Airbus A320; seven Airbus A330; eight ATR 72-500 and five ATR 72-600. The ATRs are used by wholly-owned subsidiar y Cebgo for inter-island routes. Meanwhile, the budget carrier on Monday said it is mounting five new routes to its interregional network, connecting more islands from Mindanao to Visayas to the rest of the archipelago. Cebu Pacific’s announcement comes barely a week after President Rodrigo R. Duterte placed Mindanao under Martial Law to prevent the spread of extremism in the
region after security forces clashed with the Islamic Statelinked Maute group in Marawi City, Lanao del Sur. Starting July 26, Cebu Pacific and Cebgo will fly three times weekly (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) between Cebu and Masbate, Davao and Dumaguete, and Zamboanga and Cotabato. Cebgo will also begin flying four times a week (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Saturday) between Cagayan de Oro and Zamboanga, and Davao and Tacloban on July 27. “Cebu Pacific is very pleased to continue to help promote domestic and international tourism and a logistics enabler to move goods across the country. Each tablet is preloaded with Batibot, the first mobile application in Filipino that is aligned with the kindergarten curriculum of the Department of Education. Do you trust elder people? Born in 1953, I started my life at a period when more babies have been entering the German population than never before. World War II, more or less the end of the world - as my late grandmother mostly describes that time - has ended eight years ago. It was not the end of everything. The world economic crises changed into another economical world wonder. During the Sixties, we looked upon the youth culture of Woodstock as a symbol - of the power of music, the pursuit of self expression, the values of peace, love and community, and the rejection of “the establishment” - even in the midst of torrential rain and an aftermath of foot-deep mud. I enjoyed our flower power peace generation with long hair. Yes, I confess, many times, I was really very cynical about my parent’s values. I really rejected anything that suggested tradition. By the way, that’s one thing, which can be observed also in the Philippines since a couple of years. I observed such changes since my first visit in the Philippines in 1976. Nowadays, I feel happy, if my nieces and nephews start listening again my ideas and ask my advise. The slogan “Never trust someone above 30” had to be abandoned since I crossed that divide myself. Now, hopefully at the second half of my present life, “30” looks impossible young. And let’s be honest to ourselves: Aren’t we facing the same realities our parents did: Raising families, needs to pay for school et cetera et cetera? We have held fiercely to freethinking and the not traditional ways
our parents - shaped H ave M y Say by the “Depression”, World War II and much more - never got the luxury to feel. Those of us who have made good money, hold fewer illusions that a big house and a Mercedes Klaus Doring (or any other brand!) in the garage are likely to bring happiness. But guys, what seems most precious to us nowadays is not career or success, but time and the freedom to do the things we love to do that hold meaning. Earnings through a job we don’t like might be painful; but isn’t it much more painful to wait for nothing while being fed by a friend? Failed marriages, difficult mid-life attempts, something that might pass away a family - yes, I think, we know the rarity of solid and long living relationships with a partner, with children or with a hard to find friend. We may even dare to speak the language that 30 or 40 or even 50 years ago would have seemed uncool. SPES participants spend summer in civic engagements By Gimar A. Reyes

he participants of the Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES) spent their summer with a different purpose. From April 22 to May 16 this year, 120 SPES beneficiaries engaged in community work that focused in youth survey on civic engagement, including a literacy training for education majors and democratic leadership development for student government officers. In collaboration with the Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan’s School of Education through its Night School Program, in partnership with Local School Board of
the City of Cagayan de Oro, Oro Youth Development Council (OYDC), co-funded by the local government unit of CDO, and Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), this program embraced the concept of ServiceLearning which combines academic theory with practical real-life experience to foster a broader understanding of the course and its purpose in the society. “We are glad to welcome and help these SPES participants spending their summer differently,” said Regional Center of Expertise (RCE) director Marivic Trinidad. “We hope that
we imparted social relevance in the service that you’ve made. You will have a point to have a common ground to make a difference, something you can share with others,” she added. OYDC was responsible in providing three tracks of engagement for the SPES participants. Under the literacy track, 14 education students served at the XU Night School Program. They helped in the creation of traditional and digital instructional materials to aid learning and prepare students for the Alternative Learning System (ALS) acceleration exam, and in the long run, pave a way for their formal education. They also conducted

an outreach-tutorial activity with the learners as part of the practical application. Kim Logronio, junior education student, shared her experience: “It was fulfilling to know that you do not only serve to earn money but you also learn meaningful experiences with the new people that you meet along the journey. I’m blessed to be part in this program and even looking forward to joining again next year.” A joint undertaking of the LGU and DOLE, SPES is an annual program that
provides students with the opportunity to earn and learn during their free summer months. They are encouraged to use their earnings to support their educational pursuits. SPES started with a Basic Orientation Seminar (BOS) on April 21-22 where the participants was introduced to their area work and the basic skills needed from them to achieve the goals of the program. The area work was slated from April 24 to May 11. A talk on the Filipino millennials and responsible digital citizenship
was also given by multimedia writer Stephen Pedroza at the XU American Library on May 5. Moving forward, the local government unit of CDO and other institutions involved hope that this batch of SPES participants will ripple a different kind of summer of service for other youth. They envision a more proactive way of engaging students in their learning experience which allowed them to not only earn financially but also learn through the practical experience of serving the community.
