hundred and eight years after the Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High School’s inauguration on December 15, 1909, the family of one of its original patrons continues its legacy of responsible stewardship to perpetuate the institution’s vision of molding patriotic and responsible citizens.
On the occasion of her birthday last Thursday, 18 May 2017, Ms. Marinela “Girlie” Neri Velez, President of Paterno Velez Foundation & Founder of the Marinela Neri Velez Strings Program, formally turned over a brand new Yamaha JU-109PE upright piano to the MOGCHS administration headed by principal Dr. Pedro Estaño. “I am asking nothing
in return for this except that you take good care of it so that more students in the future can also benefit by learning and practicing on it,” Ms. Velez said during the turnover rites held at the school’s covered court. On hand to show their support for the project were close relatives and friends of Ms. Velez including Sol Marie Ucab, Jaime Muñoz, Jocelyn Velez, Vinny
N. Veloso and Carla Q. Gerali,Yamaha sales specialist. Prior to this, the same patroness of the arts donated 41 string instruments under the Marinela Neri Velez Strings Program to MOGCHS to enable musically inclined and talented students who cannot afford to buy their own instruments to hone their craft and develop their inborn talents further. Originally a 10 year program grant meant to put together a community based strings orchestra from the public and private schools of Cagayan de Oro through a local school, Ms. Velez moved the program to MOGCHS when the first school opted to proceed in different direction,. IDC’s CEO is co-author of book on protecting contemporary architecture Architect Romolo Nati, Chairman and CEO of listed company Italpinas Development Corporation (IDC), is co-author of a book entitled Time Frames, published by Italian editors Ugo Carughi and Massimo Visone. The new publication, according to Visone, focuses on current conservation and protection rules and strategies of more than 100 countries, with particular attention to emerging nations and twentieth-century architecture. The book presents an overview of critical issues and actions undertaken
by different countries related to architectural listings. Time Frames includes topics on identities, heritage, conservation, memories and the economy. Visone mentioned that IDC’s contribution is a perfect synthesis on various architectural topics on the Philippines, particularly about the time rule of protecting contemporary architecture. Renewable energy now being used by Nestle factory May 22-24, 2017

estle Philippines, Inc. is now using renewable energy to power the operations of its manufacturing facility in Lipa, Batangas. Starting February this year, the Nestle factory has switched to using Cleanergy from the MakBan Geothermal Power Plant of AboitizPower subsidiary, AP Renewables, Inc. (APRI). Nestle Philippines Technical Director Peter Winter thanked AboitizPower for making it possible for Nestle to use renewable energy to fuel its Lipa Factory operations. “The partnership between AboitizPower and Nestle Philippines is a testament to the shared commitment of both companies to continually look for better and sustainable solutions to reduce their carbon footprint and protect the environment in a more sustainable

AboitizPower joins Brigada Eskwela 2017 May 22-24, 2017
For the 5th consecutive year, AboitizPower (AP) subsidiary Therma South, Inc. (TSI) participated again in the annual conduct of Brigada Eskwela by the Department of Education (DepEd) last May 15 by mobilizing its team members as volunteers in securing and beautifying the premises of its surrounding schools. For this year, TSI chose Sirawan National High School (SNHS) as its beneficiary. More than 60 volunteers participated in the annual event through the erection of a concrete perimeter fence along the shoreline of the coastal school, as well as cleaning the
school premises. The volunteers were a mix of TSI and AP Corporate team members. Since TSI first participated in Brigada Eskwela back in 2013, this year posted the biggest volunteer turnout. “I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to AboitizPower for their support to us, not only during Brigada Eskwela, but for being our steadfast partner in the development of the younger generation. More (Global) Cyber Attacks Several weeks ago, I mentioned in this corner that the German government plans cyber attack ‘hackback’ ahead of national elections in September. Indeed, there are many cyber attack fears ahead of it. How much more now! Latest example: several British NHS (National Health Sysyem) divisions reported problems with their computer systems on Friday afternoon local time (yesterday May 12, 2017 - while writing this piece!) - while hospitals in London, northwest England and other parts of the country alerted patients to the temporary closures. “We are aware of a major IT secure system attack. All IT systems have been temporarily shut down,” Derbyshire Community Health Services said on Twitter. NHS Merseyside in the north of England reassured its patients via Twitter that it was working to solve the problem. Sure! The NHS later confirmed several hospitals’ computer systems had been hit by the Wanna Decryptor ransomware variant, but that patient data had not been accessed. “This attack was not specifically targeted at the NHS and is affecting organisations from across a range of sectors,” NHS Digital, a division of NHS England that handles information technology issues, said in a statement. Ransomware attacks are becoming more more frequent. British hospitals have been hit by ransomware attacks before, with hackers typically encrypting files and demanding a bitcoin bounty to unlock the files. The malware typically spreads through networks. In 2016 an NHS division canceled operations and diverted major trauma cases when it was hit by a virus. Intel Security reported in 2016 that hospitals were increasingly being targeted by ransomware operations, with one operator earning almost US$121 million (111 million Euro).”A combination of legacy systems with weak security, a lack of employee security awareness, a fragmented workforce, and the pressing need for immediate access to information has led the criminal underground to prey on hospitals,” the report said. In 2016 British leaders unveiled a multibillion-pound
national cybersecurity H ave M y Say strategy that included new police units to target organized online gangs and even retaliation for major attacks. Already 2016, hackers hold German hospital data hostage. Several hospitals in Germany have come under attack by ransomware, a Klaus Doring type of virus that locks files and demands cash to free data it maliciously encrypted. According to present knowledge, it was an attachment in an email that allowed the virus to enter the system. It will take weeks until all systems are up and running again. First thing, one might notice the system isn’t running smoothly anymore. Error messages are popping up, and the system is suspiciously slow. Hospitals have fallen victim to ransomware - a type of malware that makes data inaccessible to its rightful owner. Hackers then demand ransom payments in exchange for a key that unlocks the files. Ransom payments happened also in Hollywood. Blackmailing hospitals into paying ransom has also been reported in other parts of the world, most notably in the US state of California where a Hollywood hospital paid about $17,000 (15,000 EURO) in the digital currency bitcoins to hackers this month. Import is to have regular backups, so that isn’t it a problem. If the virus encrypted data is being backed up, one just restore the backup files. Fact is, each one of us and our surroundings are being watched by Big Brother... . aced with the dire need for the international cooperation on policymaking in areas of security and education by governments to counter extremism accompanied by violence and conflict, a global campaign for a culture of peace is projected by international NGOs to raise public awareness on coexistence, tolerance, and mutual understanding, and encourage civic participation. Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL), an international NGO under the United Nations Department of Public Information (UN DPI), holds a campaign for peacebuilding titled
“Walk&Talk to Prevent Violent Extremism” in many cities around the world with its international association NGOs. On May 23rd, celebrating the 4th Annual Commemoration of the Declaration of World Peace, the 11 tribes of Davao, students, women and youth will walk for peace in the streets of Davao City’s People’s Park in Cotabato City and Davao City to strengthen cooperation in respond to the threat of terrorism and the spreading poison of violent extremism. MORE than 12,000 children enrolled in public schools in Cagayan de Oro City are malnourished. Mary Ann Allera of the Cagayan de Oro City Schools Division disclosed this Tuesday in the Gawad Kalinga-initiated End Hunger Summit held at Xavier University, prompting Sen. Paolo Benigno Aquino IV to urge councilors in the city to pass resolutions or ordinances institutionalizing a citywide feeding program. Allera said the figure represents 12 percent of the total population of students enrolled in the 107 public elementary schools in the city which is around 98,000. Aquino, who was guest speaker in the oneday event, said highly urbanized cities like Cagayan de Oro are more prone to hunger than less urbanized ones because of the steep migration rate here from the rural areas. The program, which was also joined by Mayor Oscar Moreno before he embarked on an official trip to Thailand, was also a means to institutionalize Gawad Kalinga’s Kusina ng Kalinga and integrate it into a planned city-wide feeding program. Today, Kusina ng Kalinga maintains only 17 kitchens nationwide so far, one of which is located in PN Roa
Elementary School in Cagayan de Oro City. The non-government organization plans to erect 20 more kitchens within 2018, according to Gawad Kalinga executive director Luis Oquiñena. For the existing Kusina in Cagayan de Oro, Oquiñena is exploring means on how to make it a city-wide feeding program. At the PN Roa Elementary School Kusina ng Kallinga, cooks and an in-house nutritionist prepare daily lunch meals for the children, supplementing the government’s own schoolbased feeding program. The PN Roa-based Kusina is a hub feeding also the schoolchildren from the nearby barangays of Pagatpat, Iponan, Bulua, Macasandig, Taguanao, Indahag, Camaman-an and Nazareth. Oquiñena welcomed Aquino’s proposal for local-based legislation, saying the expansion of Kusina ng Kalinga to cover all public elementary schools in the city will accomplish its aim “to end hunger among Filipino children.” “We believe that this summit is a stepping stone for future legislation. Kusina ng Kalinga’s simple intervention as one nutritious meal a day can directly affect a child’s capacity to learn more, do more and be more,” Aquino said.

Further, the peace walk events in cities around the world, including Cotabato City and Davao City in the Philippines are planned to promote a peaceful environment in local communities
with voluntary participation by citizens beyond differences in nationality, ethnicity, religion, age, and gender. This global campaign has been hosted by HWPL and international NGOs since 2013 when
the Declaration of World Peace was declared and 30,000 citizens joined the peace walk. International youth have taken the leading role in developing peace walks as a peace project worldwide. HWPL
has initiated projects in 120 countries for conf lict resolution and peacebuilding, which includes legislation that promotes peace, interfaith dialogues, youth empowerment, and peace education.

IT was surely a blast of two days and nights of partying at Apple Tree Resort and Hotel this third weekend of May. Aptly dubbed as Endless Summer, it was seemingly an endless array of festivities as the morning of May 20 kicked off with the annual beach volley competition. There were a total of five volleyball teams in play during the twoday tourney – Solido 1, CU, Titans, Opol and Solido 2 – with two players of mixed gender in each team. In the end, the real-life athletic love duo of Marvin Villanueva and Brithanney Antiquina of Titans won as champions of the year. Then there was the much awaited third edition of Shore Breaks – the annual skimboarding competition every summer at Apple Tree. ord Philippines has appointed Rodel Gallega as vice president, Marketing and Sales, effective May 1. Gallega, who was vice president, Finance, for the previous five years, will continue to report to Lance Mosley, managing director, Ford Philippines. Gallega began his career with Ford in 1998, and has served in a variety of roles with increasing responsibility since joining the company. These include positions in both local Philippine operations, as well as overseas postings in Ford’s regional offices in Thailand (ASEAN headquarters), Indonesia and Ford’s Asia Pacific headquarters based in Shanghai, China. Gallega is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a member of the Financial Executives of the Philippines (FINEX), a local organization of finance professionals and practitioners. He earned a master’s degree in Business Administration from the Ateneo de Manila University and bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the Philippine School of Business Administration.
Suzuki Motor Corporation’s Indian subsidiary Maruti Suzuki India Limited has launched the allnew Dzire compact sedan in India on 16 May, 2017. Dzire is one of the main models of Maruti Suzuki. It is India’s largest selling sedan with accumulated sales of approximately 1.4 million units in India. The all-new Dzire shares the same new HEARTECT platform as those adopted for the allnew Swift, which is being sold in Japan, Europe, and other countries from 2017. Thanks to its lightweight and high-rigidity body, it strikes a balance between running performance and fuel-efficiency, while meeting safety regulations that are scheduled to be introduced in India. Huge windows also offer excellent all-around visibility and the tall driver’s seat gives you a commanding view of the road ahead. The ride is just a tad firm but not to the point of
discomfort. Though it only has three doors (two in front, one at the back), the Jimny accommodates 4 passengers (including the driver). The cabin might feel a bit snug if you regularly ride with full-sized adults but kids will be perfectly happy at the back. Even with all seats occupied, you still have 113 liters of cargo space at the back. The Jimny has been around for quite a while and it is evident with the rather dated feel of the interior. BYD tops global electric vehicle sales charts for two consecutive years THE Shenzhen-based new energy technology company BYD has become the highest selling manufacturer of new energy vehicles in 2016 for two consecutive years. According to figures compiled by EV Sales, a website that tracks the global market for new energy vehicles, BYD’s global sales of 100,183 units represented a 70 percent increase from the previous year. BYD Tang a powerful hybrid electric SUV first unveiled at the Beijing Motor Show in 2014 was the third best -selling model around the world, followed by the BYD Qin and BYD e6 which clinched the ninth and 10th place, respectively. “These results are very encouraging for us as we have invested heavily in researching and developing new energy
technology for cars, buses and monorails among others,” said BYD’s Li Yunfei, deputy general manager of Branding and PR Division. “We believe new energy is one way we can deal with climate change and that is why we want to use our ‘Cool the Earth by 1 Degree’ campaign to increase public awareness of climate change and the many ways renewable energy can be generated, stored and used.” Data tallied by EV Sales shows Chinese manufacturers of new energy vehicles are making advancements overseas. The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) is allocating Php143 million in emergency loans for its active members and old-age pensioners in Jolo, Sulu and Concepcion, Misamis Occidental, which are affected by flashfloods and agricultural damages resulting from heavy rains. The application deadline for Jolo is June 3 and for Concepcion, June 9. A total of 5,051 active members who are working or residing in the calamity-declared areas, are not on leave
of absence without pay, have no arrears in paying premium contributions, and have no unpaid loans for more than six months are qualified to apply for the loan. First-time borrowers may apply for a Php20,000 loan. Those with existing emergency loan may borrow up to Php40,000, from which the outstanding balance will be deducted. Active members may apply through any GSIS Wireless Automated Processing System (GWAPS) kiosks located in all GSIS branch and extension offices; provincial capitols;
city halls; selected municipal offices; large government agencies such as the Department of Education; Robinsons Malls; and selected SM City branches in North EDSA, Manila, Pampanga, Cebu, and SM Aura in Taguig. The 441 old-age pensioners who may avail of the Php20,000 loan must personally apply at the nearest GSIS office. Pensioners who have become active members after reentering government service may apply for the loan only once. The emergency loan is payable in 36 equal monthly instalments at
