STEAG ENVIRONMENTAL YOUTH CAMP: Fifty (50) youth leaders in Misamis Oriental marked this year’s earth-day commemoration by participating in a two-day Mapawa Environmental Youth Camp held recently at the Mapawa Nature Park in Brgy. Cugman, this city. Now on its 10th year, the annual event seeks to instil the value of environmental responsibility especially among the youth amidst mounting concerns of environmental degradation. More than 500 young leaders in Northern Mindanao have participated in the program since 2004. Mapawa is also the site of Steag’s 1,200 hectare reforestation and carbon sink project. Jointly organized by the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) and energy-firm STEAG State Power Inc. (SPI), the annual event is part of a continuing advocacy to help protect mother earth.

Creatures of Habit
T
hink a minute… You’ve probably heard the expression “A leopard can’t change its spots.” This, of course, is true of leopards. But is it true of people? Can people change? Are we humans just creatures of habit? Do we not have any control over our actions and habits? One guy said, “Bad habits are like a comfortable bed: they’re easy to get into, but hard to get out of.” Someone else said: “The chains of habits are too small to feel until they’re too strong to break.” So ‘breaking the mold’ of our bad habits takes effort, yet one of the greatest freedoms in life is the freedom from bad habits. Habits are like the roads we take through life everyday. The problem is that not every road takes us where we need to go. Actually, our routes through life often become our ruts in life. We end up stuck in them and find it hard to dig ourselves out. That’s why we must change our bad habits as soon as possible before they become our ‘second
nature’. You see, our habits become our character and our character becomes our life. As one wise person said: “First we make our habits, then our habits make us.” But we humans don’t like to change, do we? So we come up with excuses, like: “I can’t be different; that’s just the way I am.” Or we say: “I was born this way.” And the good ol’ saying: “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” But that’s just it: we’re not dogs or animals. In fact, we’re the only creatures who have the freedom and power to change and choose the kind of person we become. So what habits do you need to start changing today? You know, there’s one bad habit you need to change first, that will help you change all your other habits. It’s the habit of living your own way, instead of your Maker ’s way. He’s the only one who knows the road to the best, most satisfying life for you. So today, won’t you ask Jesus Christ to forgive you, and to take full charge of your habits and life? Just Think a Minute…
Wishing for Rain
D
on't get me wrong, I love bright and sunny days but experiencing this very hot season has made me think of begging the heavens for just a day of rain or two. To be soaked in raint is recommended for my sanity and for the sake of the plants and soil that seems to hang on for dear life with this too much hot and humid weather. This kind of weather is good in staying indoors, turning on the airconditioner in full blast or a nonstop electric fan but it seems it's not going to happen as well! The electric companies are not on our side on this one. They implement power interruptions on days that we need cooling the most. Oh well, at least this time we do not find their moves dubious since it's not election season! A little bit of rain would really all do us good. People are getting antsy and literally hotheaded lately! Going to the malls to cool off is an option but traveling to and fro is a not so comfortable experience. So the option is to just stay put
and wait until the sun comes down. Actually, I am writing this article drenched in sweat, gulping loads of cold water and trying to concentrate while enduring a hot roof above my head. This is perhaps the ironic thing about being human. When it is hot, we want it to be cold and when the rains decide to come, we beg for sunshine. Life is indeed complicated and we add to its complexity without even knowing it. To cool down we turn on so much electricity which consumes so much energy, an energy which causes problems that make the world even hotter than it used to be. I wonder if this modern cycle will ever be reversed. If it will, then that's going to be good news for you and me and the young ones. Going back to my wish for rain, I really hope it will be soon and really just enough to quench the dry earth. For sure, that's going to be a truly cool break from this dry spell! Feast Day of the Divine Mercy: The Miracle Sun May 2-8, 2014

housands of people gathered to celebrate the Feast Day of the Divine Mercy at Divine Mercy Hills in El Salvador, Misamis Oriental, to offer their devotion and renew their personal relationship with God. Devotees from different places of Mindanao came and celebrate the feast day with much joy and excitement. The field was covered by thousands of devotees praising and thanking God for another wonderful year with Him. The shrine is located at the hilltop of Ulaliman, El Salvador, Misamis Oriental. Sunday after the Catholic celebration of Holy Week is the Feast Day of the Divine Mercy, the day when people would say that miracles can happen. It shows mysterious and unexplainable appearances with religious connotations on the surrounding hills of the shrine complex. The little town of El Salvador, where the Divine Mercy Hills Shrine is concealed above a valley has become a magnet for Christian devotees and travelers from all over the Philippines and many parts of the world. As part of the tradition, the feast day always comes with a beautiful surprise, believers call it “The Dancing Sun.” The beauty of the dancing sun remains a mystery for all. It only appears on day of the Feast Day of the Divine Mercy. Some people would say, if the sun is about a mile away from the earth, everything on earth would freeze and if the sun is about a mile closer to the sun, everything
on earth will burn. Science research and experiments could never explain about this phenomenon during that day. It’s a big question that whenever and wherever we look at the sun on ordinary day, our eyes hurts. But, during that day, staring at the sun is the only thing you’ll ever want to do. The sun glows beautifully as if God is calling you to look at it, stare at it and enjoy every amazing moment of it. As the morning light starts to shine, the clouds broke, and behind the morning dew of clouds, the rays of the sun come out as an opaque disc in the sky. The sun danced, changed colors, and spun like a pinwheel. What catches the hearts of the people is when the sun hides itself beneath the strays of the clouds and suddenly it made the most sensational and touching demonstration of miracle, the sun transforms into a heart shape. The sun, a few moments before, had broken through the thick layer of clouds which hid it and now shone clearly and intensely. Many people cried while singing “Shine Jesus Shine”, a Christian praise song. As the pilgrims cheers and sing more of the song, the sun moves more and gives an amazing color boost. It shows when the color hue changes from time to time. You’ll see shades of yellow, orange, purple, blue and pink. You could see the sun, like a very clear disc, with its sharp edge, which gleamed without hurting the sight.

It could not be confused with the sun seen through a fog (there was no fog at that moment), for it was neither veiled nor dim. It kept its light and heat, and stood out clearly in the sky, with a sharp edge, like a large gaming table. The most astonishing thing was to be able to stare at the solar disc for a long time, brilliant with light and heat, without hurting the eyes or damaging the retina. The sun's disc did not remain immobile; it had a giddy motion, but not like the twinkling of a star in all its brilliance for it spun round upon itself in a mad whirl. “God is real. I still can’t believe it that what I saw is the sun moves and danced. God is amazing. God is real. God is with us” says one of the devotees who came all the way from Iligan City to celebrate the feast day for the first time.

Primavera Residences welcomes New Green Building Code pushes for wise eco-investments in CdO A new plan by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to have a Green Building Code by 2015 echoes Italpinas Euroasian Design and Eco-Development Corp.'s (ITPI) mission of building sustainable and eco-friendly properties in the country. ITPI is a young ecodeveloper that specializes in green architecture and design. Its flagship project, Primavera Residences in Cagayan de Oro, is the first eco-friendly mixed-use development in Mindanao. The new Green Building Code as proposed by DPWH seeks to regulate building construction in the country to support a more ecofriendly environment. Under this new regulation, developers will be required to build properties with eco-friendly features before they are issued with a building permit. These features will include energy-saving and water-saving components as well as materials that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. "It's about time that we have this new green building policy," said Arch. Romolo V. Nati, ITPI's executive chairman and CEO. "We always believe that developers should design buildings that complement the environment rather than against it. That is why our projects are built around this idea. Developing projects that are environmentally sound helps create a more sustainable, livable, and healthier community," he added. Although the new Green Building Code initially targets properties with large floor areas, DPWH eventually aims to implement the rule to all properties. However, this does not replace the existing National Building Code. Rather, it will be included as additional reference. According to real estate experts and appraisers, green properties have higher appreciation value compared with conventional buildings. This is due to their long-term benefits such as energy savings, reduced water consumption,

ILIGAN City – In this scorching hot season, why settle for just drinking a bottle of cold and fresh spring water when you could be swimming in it? When asked about my favorite spots in Iligan, Timoga Cold Springs is definitely on top of my list for its refreshing spring waters. Over the years, Timoga has undergone a lot of changes. Major renovations are made to meet the visitors and tourist’s unique taste of relaxation. Just this year, Timoga reaped a lot of attention for its 50% price increase for Entrance Fees. Some say it’s too much, but for me, it’s worth every penny. But what’s there to like in Timoga that’s different from other pools in the Region? 1. The Cold, Crystal-Clear Flowing Waters. Unlike other pools I tried, Timoga offers cold, pristine, crystal clear water flowing freely into the pools of different sizes. The seemingly endless supply of ice-cold water is from Lake Lanao, known to be the largest fresh water lake in the country and not a single pool in this resort has a stench of chlorine. It’s definitely safe, especially for kids who loves swimming. 2. Breath-taking View. The moment you step inside, the beauty of the pools and its landscape are absolutely stunning that makes you want to dip in right away. If swimming is not your thing, you can have a picnic while enjoying a very lovely view of the tropical foliage near the uppermost pool where you can also have a panoramic view overlooking the Iligan Bay. 3. Family-Friendly Ambiance. Family Picnics are a common sight in Timoga. Barkada Outings are also common in the site while they enjoy the pools while the others are singing their hearts out with a Videoke Machine, belting their alltime favorite hits. The landscape and
the exterior designs of the resort is a major factor of having an exciting ambiance of the vicinity. 4. Kid-Friendly Areas. Another noticeable feat of Timoga is the kidfriendly areas, such as the 3ft. Kiddie Pools, where sculptures of Dinosaurs and Spiderman are present. Various fountains can also be seen and there are even dolphin-sculptured fountains to capture the children’s attention. And who doesn’t love Water Slides? 5. Clean Location. Who would love dipping in an unsanitary pool with visible garbage around the area? Well, I don’t. And seeing trashes everywhere is impossible in this area. The cold springs is well taken care of, from the pools, to the cottages, and especially the bathroom. You can breathe at ease, free from smoke, dust or pollution. 6. Accessibility. Timoga is just along the highway which is easily accessible by land to locals and tourists and a single ride away from the city proper. A Buru-un line jeepney is recommended for those budget conscious with a cheap transportation cost of PHP 15. Taking a cab is also another option but it’ll be costly. 7. Affordability. Despite the price increase of the Entrance Fee from Php50 to Php100, I find it worth every penny considering the excellent renovations they have, and the superb maintenance of the pool and the areas. Cottage prices are from PHP 75 to PHP 250 depending on the table size and location. When taking a trip to Timoga, it is best to bring along some plastic cellophanes for easy garbage disposal and for wrapping of your wet swimming attires. Undeniably, Timoga is still the best place to get Sunkissed skins, as you take a plunge into the icy-cold waters to beat the summer heat.

The arts of the Philippines reflect a society with diverse cultural influences and traditions. Philippines is a blessed country with different Ethnic Groups. Each group has a distinct culture and language. Several of these ethnic groups can be distinguished as tribal and indigenous groups who still live in a rather traditional way. Each group lives in a specific region. You can meet them in parts of Luzon, in some of Visayas and in Mindanao. April 26, 2014, Saturday at 7pm, an evening full of cultural and artistic performances as the Manobo Children of Kisayab Bukidnon proudly showed the beauty of their culture and tradition at Xavier University Little Theater. Their cultural show was entitled LITTLE MANOBO FOOTPRINTS 2. This show features the 32 Manobo Children’s who will perform certain dance rituals and many more cultural presentations. The Manobo’s are one of the well-known ethnic tribes of the Philippines. The Manobo is just one ethnic group among Manobos in north and west forests of Cotabato Province and Kidapawan City specifically in Mt. Apo and the boundaries of Davao del Sur, Bukidnon Province, Davao City and Cotabato Province in Mindanao, Philippines. LITTLE MANOBO FOOTPRINTS 2 is a cultural show that was headed by MEUPIA PROJECT. The term MEUPIA is a Manobo term which means “GOOD”. The Meupia project is a project that aims to showcase the Culture, Talents and the Creativity of the indigenous people like the Manobo’s at Kisayab Bukidnon. Public awareness is also one of the goals of MEUPIA for leading this cultural show because they wanted to give light to the misconceptions of the people towards indigenous tribes. One of the highlights of the show was the practice of Farming and Agriculture of the Manobo as they live in the rural areas of Mindanao. The Upland Manobo practices swidden or SlashBurn Farming whereas those inhabiting the valleys practice wet-rice farming. Rice Culture is so central to the Manobo way of life that there are more than 60 different names for rice varieties, and all agricultural rituals center on it. On the other side, the Manobo children have also presented song and dance rituals which represent their festival occasions and agricultural rituals. Manobo’s dancing at agricultural rituals and festive occasions is usually accompanied by an ensemble consisting of the tagungguan, a gibba/ gimbae or drum and a pagakpak a pair of sticks. They also use kuglong; it is a string instrument of the Manobo. The MEUPIA PROJECT wouldn’t be possible without these two founders; they were Mr. Louie Talents and Ms. Morgane Quiguer. Louie Talents is an artist; he spent 17 years in Xavier University from grade school until he finished his first degree in Economics and then he moved to UP Diliman to take his second degree in painting. After taking his second degree in painting, Talents was granted a scholarship to study in Paris. On the other hand, we have Ms. Morgane Quiguer; she is an independent theater actress in Paris. She went here in the Philippines for voluntary works. Talents and Quiguer are two individuals who are more concerned of cultural advocacy for public awareness. They worked together and decided to make this project since they are focusing on cultural advocacy. They collaborated with institutions to look for funds and really pushed and strived hard to lead this project to achieve their goal in helping the Manobo children’s from their difficulties in life. Talents and Quiguer wanted people to recognize the beautiful cultures of the Manobo as an indigenous tribe. They want people to realize that these Manobo Children
have a lot of artistic talents to show. This indigenous tribe deserves to be respected and honored despite their beliefs or traditions in life. People should not misinterpret their way of living because behind their lifestyle and culture is a powerful art which can nurture our society and give pride to our country. The dance and song performed by the Manobo children is very astonishing. The audience was captivated and enlightened with their culture. The audience cannot stop smiling while watching the creative and cultural presentation of the Manobo children. It seems that the audience purely loves the presentation. The audience got also much knowledge about the Manobo Culture and that knowledge will serve as their motivation to encourage other people to help those other indigenous tribes to showcase their talents and culture. The Manobo Children were also displaying happy vibes. They had fun during their performance and

they’re all proud to show their magnificent culture. Now, the MEUPIA’s goal for next year is to beat the cultural center in the area itself. They wanted to make it sustainable. This cultural center will not just only showcase the talents of the kids but also to nurture the community as well and it will focus more on the livelihood especially for the parents. The MEUPIA PROJECT will never stop lending their hands and hearts to the indigenous people. They’re very willing to work hard just to help those indigenous people especially the kids to rise up on their difficulties in life and to be a successful individual. The LITTLE MANOBO FOOTPRINTS 2 is just an example of a true Culture Unity. Despite the fact that we people living in a big modern city are not knowledgeable about the culture of indigenous people like the Manobos, but still, we are able to relate with their culture, to interact with them and most especially to learn a lot from them.

President’s Representative and Past District Governor Socorro “Corina” Tengco Bautista graced the conference. In her speech during the opening program, Ms. Bautista said that having some 22,000 members practically transformed Rotary
into the biggest organization that provides community service and endeavors to change lives. Bautista encouraged Rotarians to engage more and to make the organization strong and united for it is a service organization composed of leaders who offer “service above self” in all its dealings. Plenary sessions were conducted during the event, where several topics were discussed, including Rotary’s continuing commitment for a Polio-free world, issues and concerns on owning Rotary Foundation, public image as the key to community acceptance, Rotary Foundation of the Rotary International, membership growth as evidence of life and new generation or youth service. In addition to plenary sessions, activities included Fellowship Night and Governor’s Ball. The District has also decided to have an assembly in Cagayan de Oro City on May 10, 2014. Training of incoming presidents and officers will be one of the highlights of the forthcoming assembly. howking, the only fast food chain that serves authentic Chinese foods opens its newest branch at Ororama Supercenter in Cogon on April 28, Monday morning. “We want to be closer to our loyal customers here in Cogon.” Said Iriss Tan- Ang, franchisee of Chowking in Ororama. The Chowking Ororama branch is the 9th branch of the franchise in Cagayan de Oro and the 41st in Mindanao. The branch opened at 9 in the morning with a drum and bugle performance and a motor cade. They also had a mob dance at the Ororama supermarket at lunch time to invite more costumers. Chowking also has different promos for their customers such as free umbrellas for the first 100 customers with a minimum purchase of P 250 and Pick-APrize promo and win different
novelty items. “We want to serve our customers with authentic Chinese foods at very affordable prices. We want to give them the best costumer experience and satisfaction.” Said Dong Esma, Operations Manager of Chowking for Mindanao. The new Chowking branch attracted many patrons to come to Ororama. “The opening of Chowking here in Ororama added a value to the Supercenter. We are expecting more costumers from this.” Said Bong Florendo, Store Manager of Ororama Supercenter. Many shoppers from the Supercenter and costumers came to the opening day to have a taste of what Chowking has to offer. A costumer said, “This is a good thing for us who wants to taste Chinese food because it is nearer to where I work.”
