or the first time this summer, OneOasis Cagayan de Oro hosted the prestigious Milo Swim Sports Clinic of famed Philippine Olympian Gerardo “Ral” Rosario’s SwimTech.

According to Swim Coach Arlito Rivera (who has been coordinating the local clinic for decades now), the Milo Summer Sports Clinics is offered every summer throughout the country with over 21 sports disciplines and activities.

“In Cagayan de Oro we have three sport disciplines sponsored by the Milo Summer Sports Clinics: Basketball, Taekwondo, and Swimming. Instructors, Coaches, or Organizers must first be accredited and Recognized by their

respective National Sports Associations (NSAs) in order to qualify and conduct these sports disciplines locally,” Coach Lito stressed.

IDC in Breaking Stereotypes: Going Green in Emerging Cities I

talpinas Development Corporation (IDC) Chairman and CEO, Architect Romolo Nati shed light on the importance of green buildings in emerging cities in the Philippines during his talk at the Township Development Conference, held at the Dusit Thani Hotel, Manila, on March 26-27, 2017.

Held annually and now on its fifth year, the Township Development Conference was established to bring together property developers, urban planners, designers and executives from different countries to discuss issues relevant to township planning such as sustainability and waste management, to name a few.

Arch. Nati, an expert in green architecture, emphasized the advantages of promoting sustainable buildings for developing cities. He further explained that aside from reducing overall impact to the environment and to human health,

“green buildings are the key for property developers to winning financially, as they have been proven to be cost effective with reduced energy requirements within a development.”

With its flagship project, Primavera Residences, located in Uptown Cagayan de Oro, IDC has marked itself as first mover in ecofriendly buildings in emerging cities.

Aboitiz Equity Ventures reports profit of P4.7 billion in first quarter of 2017 A

boitiz Equity Ventures, Inc. (AEV) ended the first quarter of 2017 with P4.7 billion net income, a 7% decrease year-on-year.

The company recognized non-recurring losses of P442 million (versus last year’s gain of P186 million) coming from foreign exchange (forex) losses recognized upon revaluation of dollardenominated liabilities and mark-to-market losses on derivatives.

Power accounted for 67% of the group’s total earnings while income contribution of the banking and financial services, food, infrastructure, and land strategic business units (SBUs) were at 22%, 6%, 4% and 1%, respectively.

Consolidated earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) of P 12.7 billion, recording an increase of 14% year-on-year (YoY).

Considering ITDA expenses, the higher income contributions from associates brought core net income for the

quarter 5% higher YoY, from P4.9 billion to P5.1 billion.

“Our performance reflects the underlying strength of our core operating businesses as we continue to invest for the future. In pace with the country’s upward growth momentum, we will use our gains to create longterm value for all our stakeholders,” Erramon I. Aboitiz, AEV President and Chief Executive Officer, said.

For power distribution, attributable sales for the period was at 1,208 gigawatt-hours, remaining close to flat compared to the same period last year.

Banking & Financial Services Union Bank of the Philippines’ (UnionBank) income contribution to AEV increased by 30% YoY, from P837 million to P1.1 billion. Together with its subsidiaries, the SBU recorded a net income of P2.2 billion for the first quarter of 2017, 27% higher as compared to the P1.7 billion earned for the same period last year. The increase in net income was largely in view of the sustained growth in recurring income, coupled with trading profits.

Likewise, the income contribution of PETNET, the other financial services company, increased by 207% YoY to P4.4 million.

Food AEV food subsidiaries’ (Pilmico Foods Corporation, Pilmico

Animal Nutrition Corporation, and Pilmico International Pte Limited) income contribution for the quarter decreased by 25% YoY from P389 million to P292 million.

Feeds Philippines and Flour reported a drop in net income contributions largely driven by lower selling prices and higher raw material (RM) and operating costs. Depressed flour prices, higher wheat cost, and increase in operating costs dragged Flour’s net income for the period to P87 million, 46% lower YoY. Feeds Vietnam’s income doubled to P7 million driven by the 5% volume growth, a result of the expansion in new markets: export and commercial, and better margins. The recovery in live hog selling prices of Farms resulted to a 4x higher YoY net income of Farms division to P81 million.

Land Aboitiz Land, Inc. (AboitizLand) registered a net income of P72 million, 46% higher than last year’s P50 million.

The increase in net income was mainly attributed to higher revenue recognition by the industrial BU, and improved sales and construction progress by the residential BU. AboitizLand posted a revenue of P640 million for the first quarter of 2017 – an increase of 28% from the same period last year. Of this revenue, the residential BU contributed 53% (P339 million), the industrial BU 41% (P264 million), and the commercial BU and others, 6% (P37 million).

Infrastructure From the infrastructure group, Republic Cement and Building Materials, Inc.’s (Republic) income contribution to AEV decreased by 48% YoY from P391 million to P202 million. Cement demand slowdown was experienced in the

first quarter of 2017, as compared to the same period last year when there was strong demand due to the election season.

Global Environment Voices If I meet people fighting for our clean environment, you might find me at their site. Activists have started a eight-day push to get individuals and institutions to divest from oil, gas and coal corporations. Investing in the fossil fuel industry equals pumping money into climate change, they say.

Fossil fuels seem to be losing their unquestioned position as the world’s primary source of energy, particularly after the Paris climate agreement. Even so, governments and private investors continue to support fossil fuel businesses worldwide.

The Global Divestment Mobilization (May 5 to 13, 2017) will draw together thousands of people from across 39 countries on six continents to push forward divestment from fossil fuels, in favor of renewable energy. In other words, to convince investors to withdraw their financial support fossil fuel companies - and in doing so, protect the climate.

Environmental activists and concerned individuals ask for an immediate freeze of any new investment in coal, oil or gas companies. The movement has spread across the world over the past five years. It’s based on the argument that investing in fossil energies fuels the climate crisis.

As a project of the environmental nonprofit organization 350.org, the Global Divestment Mobilization started in United States universities in 2012. But the movement has now reached global dimensions. “Everything is growing very rapidly,” Melanie Mattauch, Europe communications coordinator told international media.

The network includes now countries from Asia, Latin America and Africa. The development of the movement in Brazil, for instance, has been particularly exciting for Mattauch. “There, many bishops and Catholic groups are engaged,” she said.

“They want the Vatican to react as a great moral authority - and a great investor.”

And the movement has also been very successful,

More than 700 public institutions worldwide have already committed to divest, including educational institutions, philanthropic foundations and governments. Just last week, the German city Klaus Doring of Göttingen has become the fourth German city withdrawing investment in coal, oil and gas companies. As German citizen I am happy to learn about it.

Faith-based organizations represent around 20 percent of the total divestment reached yet.

“Christians in the Church have a particular moral and religious obligation to speak out on climate change,” a spokesperson from the Christian Climate Action group told German media. She didn’t want to be named, out of professional reasons.

This is indeed all about raising awareness and making pressure.

Some accuse fossil fuel companies of only surviving thanks to governmental subsidies. Oil Change International issued a 2015 report that G20 governments provided more than $400 billion (360 billion Euro) per year to fossil fuel production, including some of the world’s most carbon-intensive and polluting ones. “What is the relevance of say, Shakespeare, to an engineering student who is trying to build a bridge?” asked twotime Palanca awardee Dr Anthony Tan as he began his talk in “Why Literature Matters: A Literary Forum.”

His talk formed part of Xavier Ateneo’s celebration of National Literature Month which culminated in events spearheaded by the Department of English Language and Literature (DELL) : “Why Literature Matters: A Literary Forum” and “Balaki Ko: Poetry Reading.” Both events were slated on Friday, April 28 at the XU Little Theater.

And who better to grace the occasion than one of Mindanao’s most prolific writers and poets?

Tan earned his MA in Creative Writing and PhD in English from Silliman University, where he also taught for over a decade. He also chaired the English Department of Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) and was a regular panelist in several writing workshops, such as the Silliman National Summer Writers Workshop, Iligan National Writers Workshop, and Dumaguete National Writers Workshop.

Many of Tan’s works have been widely published both locally and abroad such as the prestigious Atlanta Preview and Manoa, the literary journal of the University of Hawai’i.

He was also listed in the Encyclopedia of Philippine Arts and Artists for his significant contribution to the Philippine literary scene, as he has authored two book poems, “The Badjao Cemetery and Other Poems” and “Poems for Muddas.”

Tan also won two Focus Philippines Awards in Poetry from HomeLife magazine and the most coveted Palanca Awards in essay and poetry.

To answer the question he posed at the start of his talk, the master poet cited five major points: (1) Literature matters because it is timeless.

appeared in the form of clay tablets. It has managed to transcend time as the Epic of Gilgamesh is still readily available today in for readers to enjoy.

(2) Literature matters because it is universal. Tan cited the Bible as “one of the most significant pieces of literature that has influenced and shaped Western civilization, the tragedies of the Greeks, and the philosophical premises of the great philosophers.” He argued that though the Bible was written about the Jews, by the Jews, and for the Jews, its appeal, however, is not limited to the Jews alone. He mentioned Ruth’s tale in the Old Testament, a story of love and fidelity — themes which are definitely resonate with all people regardless of culture and race. Not one who hesitates to make a joke or two, Tan humorously added that Ruth’s famous lines to her mother-inlaw, Naomi, were the first “hugot lines” of the Bible.

(3) Literature matters because it is transcendent. “Literature goes beyond boundaries, crosses over to other disciplines,” . Though literature was originally intended as art and a form of entertainment, people read it as religion, philosophy, politics, linguistics, psychology, and pedagogy. Calling on the many different perspectives and slants on literary criticism such as Marxism, Feminism, and Structuralism, among other theories, Tan showed the many areas by which literature could be read and

interpreted.

Tan also highlighted that transcendence may also mean that a truly significant literature, though it may be written in one country, will cross-over to other people. “Underneath the color of our skin, the fiber of our hair, and the slant of our eyes, we are all human beings and we belong to one human race.".

(4) Literature matters because it teaches and entertains. Tan quoted Horace in Ars Poetica, to prove his point: “Literature has a dual function: to instruct and to delight. Next to food, shelter, and sex, these are the two activities all men want to do — to know and to entertain or be entertained.”

(5) Not the least, literature matters because it is a friend to man. The writer became more personal in this part of the talk. He mentioned many friends and literary journeys he took, none of which would have been possible without the common love for literature that he shared with his circle of publishers and authors. He also cited the

experiences of the writer Ernest Hemingway, and of the many relationships and friendships that the writer formed through literary interactions.

Alongside Tan, other literary scholars of Xavier Ateneo also presented their literary works and criticisms.

Aimee FaunillanAbella presented her masters’ thesis, “Counter Memory Strategies in Arlene Chai’s Historiographic Metafiction,” which showed the connections between Chai’s novel and the Marcos years.

Dr. Maria Luisa Saministrado also read “The Female Archetype in 19th Century Fiction,” a criticism on Kate Chopin’s novel, “The Awakening,” in which she stressed the 19th century women’s plight for individuality and equality.

When asked how he encourages his students to read more, Tan jested that he just presents them with his reading list and tells them that once they manage to read at least one of his recommendations, they’ll “feel more superior” than their peers.

The top end power of the bike is very good already what if we modify it? It is a bang for the buck. The brakes are very good as well. Size is shin; it actually feels smaller than the 600cc. It is the lightest GSX-R and is agile.”

Roman who was a first timer in the GSX-R lineage said, “My expectations were positively surpassed.

The GSX-R1000R is very competitive. It can perform well against other brands. Top things that I like about it are the power delivery, braking system, handling and the smooth shifting system.

The traction control is a great help. It is the best in its class among its coJapanese contenders and can be compared to top European sportbikes with its electronics.

The smooth shifting doesn’t cause delay thus providing easier riding control. I like it!”

Ford Wins Bronze at 2017 Kidlat Awards for ‘Rock the Road’ video

An audiovisual ode to the Ford Mustang, one of the world’s most iconic cars, bagged a Kidlat Bronze award for the Branded Film and Native Advertising category in the recent Kidlat Awards 2017. Ford was the only automotive brand to win in a

major category at the Awards.

The Ford Mustang “Rock the Road” (a.k.a.

Roar) video featured actor-race car driver Matteo Guidicelli and rock band Sandwich, creatively integrated the iconic roar of the Mustang engine into a musical performance.

The video earned over seven million views on Facebook, more than 33 million online impressions, a 90 percent increase in vehicle inquiries, helping the Mustang sell out across dealerships in the Philippines.

The Kidlat Awards,

which is held annually by the 4A’s Creative Guild, recognizes the best and most creative works in the advertising industry.

NAIA 3 now just a 10 minute walk from Newport City D

uring my infrequent trips to Metro Manila, I’ve often wondered what was being constructed over Andrews Avenue and NAIA Expressway to Newport City from NAIA Terminal 3.

I rather wished it was a pedestrian walkway similar to the one which used to link the defunct Kai Tak Airport in Hong Kong to an airport hotel which was very convenient for passengers in transit. After a harrowing experience of having to wait almost three hours for a taxi ride to our destination from NAIA T3, I believed many passengers in those queues wished similarly.

During our family’s latest visit to the capital last week, we finally had an answer and what an answer it was! Completed in only four months from its groundbreaking, Runway Manila was inaugurated last April 18 in time for the country’s hosting of the ASEAN Summit 2017 meetings.

When we tried it, Runway Manila had been Open for barely 3 weeks.

Our fellow Misamisnon Rey Fabricante, director for operations of the nearby Belmont Hotel, kindly showed us the way to the newly opened facility.

Runway Manila links the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 to Newport City through a 220-meter air-conditioned pedestrian walkway raised 17.8 meters over

Andrews Avenue and NAIA Expressway.

The enclosed, airconditioned bridge is PWD-friendly with moving walkways and elevators, that’s so handy for guests with heavy or bulky luggage’s. There’s also golf carts traveling both ways for pregnant women, PWDs, senior citizens and guests with toddlers or children.
