Acclaimed Kagay-anon director comes home after 18 years

B

ani Logroño is a Filipino writer and director, most notably known for his award-winning World War II documentaries aimed at inspiring the next generation of heroes in the Philippines through historical education for the youth.

Working with the production team Spyron•AV Manila, the documentaries are brought to various schools, universities and organizations around the world for young students to learn about their nearly forgotten history of the Philippines during World War II.

Mr. Logroño’s 54-minute documentary “Unsurrendered 2: The Hunters ROTC Guerrillas” has gained acclaim and recognition in various film festivals around the world, including New Zealand, Indonesia, Canada, and Hollywood.

Filipino historians and professors have hailed the film as the best World War II documentary about the Philippines.

At 24 years old, Mr. Logroño is one of the youngest directors in the Philippines to advocate World War II history.

Eagles NMR1 distributes fingerlings

THE Fraternal Order of Eagles (Philippine Eagles) NMR1 distributed last Saturday 200,000 fingerlings along the Sta. Ana River in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental.

The distribution is part of the year-long civic outreaches of NMR1 under the able leadership of Gov. Anjun Gomez.

A total of 23 clubs from NMR1 participated in the fingerlings distribution which was succeeded by the Governor’s Night in the evening. The clubs which joined in the outreach were Tagoloan Eagles Club, Balingoan Eagles Club, Opol Eagles Club, eagles/PAGE 7

The Making of VALOR: The Legacy of Col. Emmanuel V. De Ocampo

he making of this documentary was a remarkable challenge in itself: A group of young filmmakers and talents–some of which having never experienced the making of a documentary–faced the daunting task of condensing 92 years of a legendary hero into 50 minutes, all the while fighting against sparse resources, inclement weather, and raging typhoons, all in the span of only six months.

But despite all these challenges, each and every person in the crew fought on to make the film a reality.

The unbelievable stories of Col. De Ocampo’s life inspired us to finish the film no matter what, so that it may, in turn, continue to inspire the future generations who will watch this movie.

Halfway through our production, it was decided that the documentary was to be

called Valor: The Legacy of Col. Emmanuel V. De Ocampo.

“Valor” because it is the quality of spirit that enables a person to face any challenge without fear. It is a virtue that has only been expressed by a select few throughout history. The defining trait of a true hero.

But Col. De Ocampo did not just express this characteristic in one or two moments in his life. Col. De Ocampo exemplified valor throughout his lifetime of service.

It was at the core of his principles, and it extended to everyone that he met and everyone that learned about him.

Col. De Ocampo inspired people to become heroes in their own way.

And even after death, his legacy of creating new heroes lives on.

Life During Wartime and the Guerrillas of Mindanao A mong the salient events of General Douglas MacArthur Week are an eyewitness account of how it was to live in Mindanao during the Japanese occupation from 1941-1945, and the operations of Filipino and American guerrillas in Mindanao during that period.

The Cagayan de Oro Historical and Cultural Commission has coordinated two lectures on these interesting subjects, both to be held at the Centrio Mall Activity Center.

The first, “Guerrilla

Daughter” is scheduled for 10AM Tuesday, 14 March 2017, and dwells on the book by Virginia Hansen Holmes, daughter of guerrilla Cpl. Charles Hansen, who was the logistics head for the Surigao sector of the 10th Military District of the United States Forces in the Philippines (USFIP) under Col. Wendell Fertig. Her two elder brothers were guerrillas under Fertig as well.

share her personal experience of the time her family spent in Lanao, Misamis Oriental and Surigao from the late 1930s through WWII. Her Dad operated a sawmill in Lanao while her three older brothers attended Ateneo de Cagayan (present day Xavier University) while her sister attended Lourdes Academy (now Lourdes College). The Hansen family later moved to northern Surigao where her father worked as Plant Superintendent of a gold mine.

Her second lecture scheduled on Wednesday, 15 March 2017 at 10:30AM of the same venue, will discuss the book Wendell Fertig and his Guerrilla Forces in the Philippines (Fighting the Japanese Occupation 1942-1945) written by her husband Kent Holmes.

DA-10 joins the observance of Rabies Awareness Month

The month of March marks the observance of the Rabies Awareness Month.

In line with this, the Department of Agriculture (DA) intensifies the campaign on responsible pet ownership to prevent and eliminate Rabies – one of the most deadly animal disease that kills more or less 200 Filipinos yearly.

Although it is 99.9 percent (%) fatal, it is 100 % preventable.

With the theme, “Rabies Iwasan, Alaga’y Pabakunahan,” the National Rabies Prevention and Control Committee (NRPCC) in coordination with DA and various Local

Government Units (LGUs) will conduct a mass rabies vaccination all over the country, this month.

In the case of Cagayan de Oro City, the City Veterinary Office (CVO) will conduct a free mass vaccination on the following dates and barangays: March 1 at San Simon, March 3 at Baikingon, March 7 at Iponan, March 8 at Balulang, March 10 at Indahag, March 11 at Bugo, March 14 at Cugman, March 15 at Tablon, March 17 at Agusan, March 21 at Puerto and March 22 at Balubal.

According to Dr. Ma. Teresa B. Roa, Regional Rabies Coordinator

of DA-RFO10, they have received a total of 100,000 doses of Rabies vaccines from the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) and have distributed them to the different provincial and city veterinary offices in the region.

She reported that Region 10 ranked 6th in the most number of animal rabies cases in the country. Out of the 114 samples submitted for laboratory testing, 44 were found out to be positive. Moreover, Cagayan de Oro City ranked 6th in the list of the most number of animal rabies cases by cities with 19 positive cases out of 55 submitted samples.

The data was

collected through the submission of Rabies case reports and dog head samples submitted to DA’s Regional Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (RADDL).

Dr. Roa informed that in R-10, the province of Camiguin maintained its status as a Rabies free province.

She further encouraged pet owners to vaccinate their pets two weeks before bringing them to the province.

During the World Youth Day 2016, Pope Francis urged us to recognize that gambling is a form of pessimism succumbing to luck and chances, with the mask of recreation, “depriving people of the ability to determine their own fates.”

When he visited the Philippines last January 2015, in His homily at Luneta he said, “The devil is the father of lies. Often he hides his snares behind the appearance of sophistication, the allure of being ‘modern’, ‘like everyone else’. He distracts us with the promise of ephemeral pleasures, superficial pastimes.

And so we squander our God-given gifts by tinkering with gadgets; we squander our money on gambling and drink; we turn in on ourselves. We forget to remain focused on the things that really

matter. We forget to remain, at heart, children of God.” Therefore, may I bring us back to the 2005 statement of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) on gambling. It warns us that, “applying the general moral principle to the specific Philippine situation… gambling that is organized, widespread, and systemic, whether legal or illegal, is not desirable. It is creating a culture of gambling that is seriously eroding the moral values of our people. In its illegal form, especially jueteng, gambling has bred a clandestine network of corruption that feeds itself on the hundreds of millions of pesos lost to gambling especially by the poor.”

Together with the CBCP and other religious leaders, the local Church of Cagayan de Oro stands:

• To denounce illegal gambling in all its forms and prevent its legalization; • To combat the expansion of organized and systemic legal gambling such as the putting up of casinos; and • To refrain from soliciting or receiving funds from illegal and legal gambling so as not to promote a culture of gambling.

May the Lord of life renew in us the trust and hope in Love, and the capacity to go against any form of a Culture of Death as seen in the pessimism of the Culture of Gambling. May He rekindle in us the passion to create a just and humane society, where recreations are for the integral growth of the person, and tourism will showcase the innate beauty of the city without resorting to any means that would degenerate the values and dignity of our people.

ainstream media and the online community have been hounded by the proliferation of hoax or fake sites especially at the height of the political season.

It’s not an isolated happening here in the Philippines. United States for one, is battling with its rise that challenges the integrity of some high ranking officials.

Sharon Hill, a known science writer who reports on fake news, pseudoscience, and conspiracy theories says- “the origins of “fake news” go back to the 1950s when UFO newsletters from organizations like the Aerial Phenomenon Research Organization reported on alien abductions and government cover ups”.

Online experts here in the Philippines have strongly urged the Philippine

Government to combat fake news site that are not only misleading and create false perceptions but indirectly affect the education system of the countryproducing ill informed graduates. Fake news is on the rise in the Philippines because of the way popular social media network such as Facebook- processes its content. According to experts, companies and netizens have taken advantage of Facebook’s algorithm to spread fake news, especially on the subject of politics.

And let’s not forget, widespread of deaths of known personalities and celebrities who turned out to be aliveenjoying a holiday break somewhere.

So how do we know if we one’s site is fake or not? Here are quick steps we have summarized for your reference: 1. CHECK THE WEBSITE’S

CONNECTION TYPE. If it has “https”, it is usually more secure and there more trustworthy than sites that use “http” designation.

“HTTPS” sites security certification is a process most illegitimate sites don’t bother with.

2. CHECK THE SITE’S SECURITY STATUS IN YOUR BROWSER’S ADDRESS BAR. A safe website will display a green padlock icon to the left of the website’s URL. A site that consists the connection type

(“http” or “https), or the domain name itself and the extension (“com”, “net” etc).

Domain extensions like “.biz” and “.info” tend to be not credible.

Generally, those sites do not carry the same credibility as “.edu” or “.gov” sites.

3. BE MINDFUL OF THE DOMAIN NAME. For example, www.inquirer.net is not the same as www. incquirer.net . Other sites mislead us by cloning a legitimate website by just one letter in its domain name.

4. LOOK FOR

BAD ENGLISH ON THE SITE. Sites containing a large number of poorly spelled words, bad grammar, awkward phrasing- are highly suspicious.

5. RELIABLE CONTACT PAGE. Most sites provide contact page so if the site in question does not have a contact page listed anywhere, it should be an immediate flag.

6. TOO GOOD. If a story is too good to be true, find out the source online. Many times, it will come from a known satire

or fake news sites such as The Onion or the Adobo Chronicles.

In summary, we have a greater role to discern what it legitimate news or which is not. We should be not selective of what we should believe to be true or not. The best way to get the right source of information is to stay connected to known reliable sites.

Known mainstream media has their own websites- whether you like the news or not, you can be assured that they have the right sources and right information. Just because you like what you read, it does not mean they are factual and credible. Sharing a suspicious article make it “legitimate” to many especially it has a thousand likes and shares.

But as responsible readers and netizens, we should be more cautious by making sure that these online news or articles are from reliable sources.

Executives of PLDT and Smart Communications recently shared with international audiences how providing access to technological tools and innovation opportunities could enhance the education of Filipino students, from kindergarten to college.

At the EduTECH event staged in the SMX Convention Center by Terrapinn, a world leader in business events, Smart community partnerships

head Darwin Flores said lack of access to technology could widen the economic divide. This, he said, is why Smart is making available digital learning tools and content to students in remote and underserved areas.

Smart is doing this via donations of the Schoolin-a-Bag and TechnoCart.

The School-in-a-Bag is a backpack aimed at remote schools with no electricity.

It has a solar panel and battery, LED TV, a laptop

and tablet for the teacher, five tablets for students, lapel mic, hard drive, and pocket Wi-Fi with starter load. The donation package likewise includes teachers’ training, K+12 content, learning activity sheets, and a learning management system.

Meanwhile, the TechnoCart is a digital laboratory that can be wheeled from one classroom to the next.

It contains 20 student tablets preloaded with the Batibot educational app co-developed by Smart, a laptop, an LCD projector, a lapel microphone, and Smart Bro Pocket Wi-Fi. The donation package also includes training materials for teachers.

Studies show that the student beneficiaries of these donations have displayed improved literacy and stronger appetite for learning.

For its part, PLDT Enterprise is helping enhance the learning experience of students by improving school infrastructure. Omni Amisola-Larrosa, PLDT Digital Campus lead, said that among its offers

are Smart e-Learning, an integrated learning management system with gamification elements that make lessons more engaging.

Meanwhile, Smart public affairs senior manager Stephanie Orlino shared at the Global Peace Convention how Smart was helping drive student innovation via the Smart Wireless Engineering Education Program (SWEEP).

Under the 14-yearold program, Smart partners with schools offering engineering and information technology courses, and provides them with up-to-date telecommunications equipment, as well as hands-on trainings, seminars, and internships.

MMM-EyeSight2020 is a component program of Montero Medical Missions (monteromedicalmissions.org), a faith based international NGO based in Cheasapeake, Virginia, USA. It is an Optometry and eyeglass program that employs community resource mobilization and private - public partnership strategies to sustain its hospital base operations, eyecare outreach activities and eyeglass banking operations. It facilitates eye surgical and advance medical interventions through a network of eye specialty practitioners and mission groups.

Working in collaboration with the Department of Health through the National Committee on Sight Preservation(NCSP) in line with International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) VISION 2020 – The Right to Sight initiative, it now leads the Provincial Eyesight Board to champion Vision2020-Surigao del Sur. Inspired by Christian love and service to humanity and urged by the surgical backlog and increasing incidence of blindness and visual impairment in the Philippines, EyeSight2020, aims to provide access to primary eye health services which is free to indigents and affordable to low income patients in underserved communities.

MMM-EyeSight2020 model eye clinic is located in Madrid District Hospital, Province of Surigao del Sur in the Philippines.

In 2014, a total of 4,437 eye exams were performed while 4,371 corresponding eyeglasses prescriptions were filled and dispensed free and some for token fees.

421 patients diagnosed of pathological conditions, treated with minor infections, referred for cataract and other surgical interventions to restore their vision.

In 2016, the program received brand new optometric instruments to establish and maintain an eye care clinic to serve residents of the central area of the province specially public school children having partnered with the Department of Education and trained school nurses and teachers on vision screening. We also have formally engaged into partnership with the local government unit (LGU) of Carrascal, Surigao del Sur to make eye care part of their local healthcare system. We are continuously working to replicate the program in other parts of the country.
