wo public schools in Northern Mindanao bagged three awards for their publications during the week-long National Schools Press Conference in Dumaguete City which ended Friday, Feb. 23, 2018. Department of Education regional director Allan G. Farnazo said the NSPC 2018 has proven that “with right character and right preparation, a better performance can be achieved.” DepEd 10 campus journalism coordinator Angelina Buaron said these recognitions ended Northern Mindanao’s seven-year drought in school paper contest awards. Buaron said the features section of “The Pioneer” and
the editorial pages of “Ang Pluma,” both publications of Antero Uy Roa Memorial Elementary School in Clarin, Misamis Occidental, were adjudged fourth and seventh bests, respectively. Also, the features section of “Ang Sinagtala,” the official publication in Filipino of Cagayan de Oro Citybased Gusa Regional Science High School won sixth best award. DepEd NSPC records show the last time DepEd
10 school papers were recognized -- sixth best in news section and seventh in editorial section -- was during the 2011 NSPC that was held in Butuan City. TOP 3 RECORDS Aside from citations from school publications, campus journalists from region 10 made it to NSPC’s top seven in individual competitions. “We have hit the target, top 3!,” Buaron commented in her Facebook account after receiving the plaque on behalf of DepEd 10 after ranking third overall in individual contests secondary level. “All these because of (you) my partners, the division journalism coordinators,” she added. Xavier Ateneo welcomes home DOST Balik Scientist Awardee Dr Noel Peter Tan

avier Ateneo welcomes the homecoming of one of its prized alumni, Dr Noel Peter B Tan of the Environmental Technologies, Nano and Advanced Materials Institute and the 2018 Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Balik Scientist Awardee for Environmental Applications of Nanoscience. Tan is an awardwinning research scientist, engineer, and academic with over seven years of experience in nanotechnology and
advanced materials market-driven research to develop and commercialize new technologies. He is currently to the Philippines for a shortterm Balik Scientist visit to his alma mater Xavier Ateneo. He will serve as co-adviser to undergraduate chemical engineering students and assist them in their capstone researches on the synthesis of nanofibers. One objective of the Balik Scientist Program of DOST is to bring Filipino scientists residing abroad back in the Philippines “to contribute to
the progress and development of the nation.” DOST acknowledges that with their expertise in the field of science and technology, the Balik Scientist Awardees could help address some of the major problems that our country faces and to inspire the next generation of Filipino scientists. Nanoscience and nanotechnology are the study and application of “extremely small things and can be used across all the other science fields, such as chemistry, biology, physics, materials science, and
engineering,” according to the US National Nanotechnology Initiative. Tan has published book chapters and international peerreviewed journals on the central theme towards green nanotechnologies focusing on both synthesis and applications. He has patents on selfhealing concrete and time-temperature indicators (TTI) and was recently involved in the application of green nanotechnologies, especially in environmental nanoremediation. Tan is set to help
develop a postgraduate curriculum on Environmental Nanotechnology and conduct lectures in the same area at Xavier Ateneo, to be sponsored by the XU College
of Engineering, XU Kinaadman University Research Office, and the Cagayan de Oro chapter of the Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers (PIChE). Tan received his BSc in Chemical Engineering from Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan in 2001, MSc in Chemical Engineering from Xiamen University in China in 2010, and PhD in Applied Chemistry from Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2014 with inclusive studies at HelmholtzZentrum Berlin (HZB) für Materialien und Energie GmbH in Berlin, Germany.

The concert, was made possible through the support of global smartphone brand Vivo. Front acts included X Factor alumni Jeric Medina, Chandreena, and Shameena Moorjani and CDO-based Visayan pop singer Winset Jacot. The Limketkai Atrium was jam-packed with fans of all ages and all walks of life to witness the talented singers perform their hits. In between the songs, fans screamed their love and appreciation for the couple. TJ and KZ did not disappoint with a show for the ages, that included a medley of

KZ, on hte other hand, delighted fans with her rendition of Tadhana, Two Less Lonely People in the World, and her winning cover of Adele’s Rolling in the Deep from the Chinese television series Singer 2018. The state-run Social Security System (SSS) said that contingency measures are currently in place while system enhancements are being done for the implementation of the Real-time Posting of Contributions (RTPC). “We recognize that RTPC is currently experiencing birth pains which involve technical problems that affect its overall implementation. In that regard, we came up with measures to ease difficulties in our new payment scheme,” SSS President and Chief Executive Officer Emmanuel F. Dooc said. To assist members and employers in paying their contributions, 94 SSS branches with Automated Tellering System (ATS) facilities have extended their servicing hours up to 7pm during weekdays while 51 branch offices are open on Saturdays from 8 am to 5 pm. “The extended daily operation and Saturday office will allow members and employers who are unable to pay with our partner banks
due to the ongoing system enhancements to comply with the RTPC,” Dooc explained. SSS branch tellering facilities can only accept contribution payments without Payment Reference Number (PRN) if there is system downtime during payment. "But this is only an emergency accommodation. We’ll go back to the standard RTPC procedure once the system resumes operations,” Dooc clarified. The pension fund is experiencing technical problems due to the influx of online users accessing the My.SSS. To address this, Dooc is encouraging all individually-paying members to update their mobile numbers with SSS to receive their PRNs via SMS. “To update their mobile numbers with SSS, they need to submit a Data Amendment Form or E-4 at the nearest SSS branch or edit the said information at My.SSS using Internet Explorer payment/PAGE 7

But a wonderful summer (?) breeze is around me, more and more flowers in my big garden are blooming. Summer or not - I am thinking again about some lazy days -somehow somewhere in future ... ! Hurray, doing nothing is really something. No, I am not talking about those people, who just hang out day-by-day and week-by-week by doing nothing and -maybe- just fed by someone. No, I mean doing nothing is really something great after a period of really hard work. By the way, it doesn’t matter, if it regards us or our children. Talking about our children: School vacations are coming soon, and yes, children also deserve several lazy days. If I talk about my nephews and nieces here, I am surprised to learn: summer school vacations are not equal
to three months total Have My Say laziness. There are dance-, gymnastic- or piano lessons as well as summer classes. Great, guys! I like that! Of course, time off should be really time off. Days by the beach Klaus Doring - with family or alone. Let’s stay outside and do absolutely nothing structured. I love to do drawings, more writeups (that’s not work for me!) or reading. There are still books in my library, which need to be ‘discovered’. I still remember several lazy summer days, sitting in the blazing sun (shouldn’t be done anymore of course!), eating a Popsicle, getting all sticky, and running away from the bees. Of course, while still in Germany, those old lazy summer days turned into lazy winter days too. Lazy days shaped and characterized my whole (especially professional) life until now. Relaxation, meditation and reinvigoration are needed. Life, affected by the “burnout syndrom” needs to reanimate with energy. So let’s rest for a while to acquire new energy. Most notable of the awards from group competitions was that of Iligan City’s Tambo Central School radio broadcasting team in Filipino which emerged as second overall in radio production and ranked fourth overall in technical application. The English team from Ozamiz City Central School ranked sixth overall in radio production.
In the secondary level, Lanao del Norte National High School’s radio broadcasting team in Filipino settled for seventh overall in radio production after ranking second in scriptwriting and sixth in infomercial. Meantime, Ozamiz City’s English television newscasting team from La Salle University Integrated School secured the fifth spot as best in television newscast and seventh best in development communication. This, after the team also harvested individual awards: Reese Nathja S. Chiong as second best newswriter while Jason Matthew O. Lim was third most promising video journalist. TV newscasting was included in the NSPC for the first time this year. In collaborative desktop publishing, Cagayan de Oro’s Gusa RSHS made an impressive three-peat performance as the team pocketed an award again as the third overall. The same group competed in online publication exhibition and was ranked seventh. Aside from two citations in publications, Misamis Occidental’s Antero Uy Roa MES also captured the fifth berth in collaborative publishing English category while Jasaan Central School of Misamis Oriental which competed in Filipino was sixth overall.

Honda sends off Troy Alberto to Asia Talent Cup and Thai Talent Cup Filipino drivers achieve highest score in worldwide driving study

onda Philippines, Inc. (HPI) officially sends off international rider Troy Alberto to Idemitsu Asia Talent Cup (ATC) and the Honda Thai Talent Cup, premier international races in the Asian region that use the Honda NSF250R, a bike made especially for racing. The only Filipino selected to take part in ATC, Alberto completed a series of try-outs last August 2017 and begun with test races in Malaysia last February 19 to 20. The race, which will run for several months, will have
six rounds and will be held in various locations including Thailand, Japan, and Qatar and will begin on March 16. Alberto also qualified for the Thai Talent Cup, and will begin competing in April. The races aim to hone racers that will eventually compete at the Motorcycle Grand Pix or MotoGP. HPI will also be hosting the Happy Honda Days activities at the Manila, Cebu and Davao Flagship Shops to invite more riders to visit and experience the shops’ offerings and give back. The activity will start on

Every drive in the Philippines can feel like an emotional roller coaster, but do the feelings of a driver affect their performance on the road? Is there merit in understanding the different motivations and experiences of Filipino drivers that contribute to driving performance? This is what Shell tried to find out through the Shell Driving Experiment, a groundbreaking worldwide study that uses cutting-edge emotion tracking technology, ChatBots, mobile apps, and weather and traffic information to uncover how the emotions of drivers affect their driving performance. Shell worked with experts from Goldsmiths, University of London, to monitor data points gathered from almost 15,000 journeys from participants across 11 countries in order to measure the driver performance of each country. In the Philippines, more than 300 participants logged nearly two thousand journeys from three key areas – Metro Manila, Cebu, and Davao – to help uncover the nature of Filipino drivers. The data from these journeys revealed that the Philippines achieved the highest driving performance score among all the countries that participated in the global study. This means that Filipinos have smoother journeys (less incidents of harsh acceleration and harsh braking) and are more efficient than other participating countries such as Malaysia, Germany, and the Netherlands. The results of the study also showed that contrary to a common local stereotype, gender has no significant influence on driving
performance, with personality type more likely to predict your driving style. Two highperforming personality types among Filipino drivers were uncovered by the study: the Modern Man and the Gamma Woman. These are the uniquely Filipino personality types that are shaped by both internal and external factors inherent in Philippine driving conditions. The Modern Man is the type of driver that has a unique combination of sensitive and ambitious personality traits, leading to their ability to maintain a well-balanced emotional state behind the wheel. They adapt well to any situation in life and exercise cautiousness on the road to achieve outstanding driver performance scores. The Gamma Woman on the other hand is known for her openness and emotional stability both on and off the road, leading to exceptional driving performance scores. “The Shell Driving Experiment is part of Shell’s efforts to understand the changing needs of our customers,” shares Anthony Lawrence Yam, Vice President for Retail at PIlipinas Shell. “This helps us create better products and services, such as developing new fuels like Shell V-Power with DYNAFLEX Technology and the expansion of our non-fuel offers at Shell Select, which are relevant in improving the driving experience of Filipinos.
