Duaw Kagay-an Park relaunch honors late Kagay-anon Int’l Founder Roy C. Gaane also organized Tapok & Duaw Kagay-an

T

he late founder of Kagay-anon International was honored during the relaunch of the Duaw Kagay-an Park held last Saturday, 27 February 2016.

Roy Chaloner Gaane, who passed away in California last January 14, 2016 at the age of 74, was an esteemed member of the Cagayan de Oro Tourism Council (CTC) as Chairman of its Overseas Committee in 2014.

“Through his outstanding leadership, he was able to galvanize the support of fellow Kagay-anons in North America in the establishment of the Duaw Park, as well as in spearheading other tourism-related activities involving his native city,” said Dorothy Jean B. Pabayo, CTC chair.

“His love and untiring efforts for the betterment of Cagayan de Oro City, even from afar, had been a lifelong commitment.

This is his legacy. And for this, he will be dearly missed.”

Over a hundred balikbayans led by Gaane’s wife Gerlou Docdocil-Gaane and his daughter Anjanette, braved a drizzle to attend the relaunch of Duaw Kagay-an Park.

City Mayor Oscar S. Moreno, Ms. Pabayo and the Gaane family unveiled a new marker recognizing the movers and donors who were responsible for the restoration of Duaw Kagay-an Park.

Kagay-anon film totally created, acted, produced and financed in Cagayan de Oro has been invited to compete in a film festival in.

Germany.

Bacus, a filmmaker based in Cagayan de Oro City is the Director, Writer, and Producer of the short film Happy Fiesta, which had its international premiere at the 28th ExGrounds Film Festival in Wiesbaden, Germany last November 13-22, 2015. (http://www. exground.com/2015/ ENG/programm/ programm-kurzevorfilme-happyfiesta. html) “Happy Fiesta” was one of two Filipino short features which were featured “out-of-competition” along with “Junilyn Has (Carlo Francisco Manatad) and “Wawa” (Anj Macalanda) which was “in-completion.”

Two Filipino full-length features “Makakabaung” (Jason Paul Laxaman) and “The Janitor” (Michael Tuviera) were also featured in the festival. dressed in black who pays local hospitals nightly visits, carrying an ice bucket intent on luring women to spend nights with him as his modus operandi as member of an international organtrading syndicate. This night, however, he meets a mysterious woman who proves to be his match.

The film’s success in Wiesbaden has led to another invitation to Europe this time in competition at the Landshuter Kurz Film Festival on March 9_14, 2016 in Landshut, Bavaria, Federal Republic of Germany.

“The opportunity to compete in such international film festivals is what filmmakers dream of. The chance to represent his country is a monumental event for any artist,” Mr. Bacus said.”What makes it more special is how the film would be the first locally made and produced one that involved Kagay-anon actors and production crew that has made it to Europe. For it to be recognized and invited to stand among other films from different countries around the world is a feat in itself.”

The film also won the “Best Editing” award for JoeBacs in the 10th Mindanao Film Festival held in Davao City. It was also featured in Cinema Rehiyon 2015 held last August 6-9, 2015 at the SM Cinema, Cinema Oriente 1 & 2 and FMA Mini Theater in Cebu City, and the Davao Ngilgig Film Festival 2015 held Oct. 30-Nov. 2, 2015 at the Cinematheque Davao, Davao City.

Cinema Rehiyon is the flagship program of the NCC and showcases regional films from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, while Davao Ngilngig Film Festival is a horror film festival featuring films from the Davao Ngilngig Film Camp and other film makers from all over Mindanao.

However, despite the invitation, JoeBacs remains unsure if he can make it to Germany for the film festival by next week.

“With the encouragement of the developing filmmaking community in Cagayan de Oro City and the Northern Mindanao area, we are hoping to raise enough funds for me to be able to travel to Germany in time

Currently, we are trying to raise funds needed to pay for my travel expenses.”

JoeBacs won the coveted “Best Director” diadem for his film “The End of War” in the 10th Mindanao Film Festival, which was also featured in the 1st Himugso Film Festival held June 1215, 2015 at the Centrio Cinemas as part of the city-wide celebration of the Himugso Festival. It was cited as the “Best Mindanao Short Film” in the 2nd SalaMindanaw International Film Festival, and won “Short Film of the Year” (Open Category) in the University of the Philippines Cebu

UPelikula 2015.

An earlier film, Ika III Putahi (Recipe No. 3) bagged the Best Short Film in the professional category, Best Art Direction, Best Story, Best Sound Scoring, Best Editing, Best Director, and Best Actor (Rusty Quintana) in Cinemagis 6, last 2014 in Cinemagis 6, Northern Mindanao’s digital short film festival.

It was also featured in the 3rd Singkuwento International Film Festival February 1927, 2016 at the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) in Intramuros, Manila; FACINE 22: The 22nd Annual Filipino International Cine Festival held in San Francisco,

California last year, 9th Mindanao Film Festival, and Salamindanaw International Film Festival.

“I hope to inspire my fellow Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental with this milestone, to prove to them that even they themselves can do it; and I hope it would spark a renewed feeling of desire for future filmmakers to make important art that would honestly express the uniqueness of the Kagay-anon and the Filipino,” he added.

Cebu Pacific launches new cabin crew uniforms

The Philippines, no doubt, is full of vibrant hues and even more colorful people. Azure skies and aquamarine waters are complemented by the bright, sunshiny personality of Filipinos.

Cebu Pacific Air (CEB), the Philippines’ largest airline, highlights these colors in its newest cabin crew uniforms, just in time for its 20th anniversary.

Designed by one of the most celebrated Filipino couturiers, the new look is bright and cheery, yet polished and streamlined.

“On our 20th year, we complete the airline’s rebranding by partnering with a homegrown Cebu talent. Fashion designer Jun Escario understands the practical needs of our crew while inflight, yet shares our passion to showcase the Philippines’ colors to the world,” said CEB VP for Marketing and Distribution Candice Iyog.

Escario has gained local and international recognition for his romantic wedding gowns and exquisite evening wear. He has been in the fashion industry for more than two decades and continues to reinvent himself, marking more milestones along

the way. This will be the first time his designs are worn by cabin crew.

“I approached the task of designing Cebu Pacific’s new cabin crew uniforms with form and function in mind. I really look forward to it being rolled out across the network,” said Escario.

He said the stylish new look offers a subtle nod to the alluring tropical isles of the Philippines, the colors giving prominence to the country’s land, sea, sky and sun. A key piece in the ensemble is the top and cardigan in a sunny shade of yellow. To complement the wearer’s shape, the tops come with vertical darts for a slender fit.

The ladies’ look also includes a knee-length skirt in crisp, navy denim that comes in a slim silhouette—flattering and easy to move around in, a perfect execution of casual elegance.

“Denim is a year-round fashion staple, and it can be casual yet classy,” said Escario. The skirt also features fun ruffle details on the front as well as a zipped detail that runs across one thigh.

Tying the overall look together is a scarf in a tropical print,

featuring Cebu Pacific’s official colors. The scarf also has one standard knot style, minimizing the need for the cabin crew to fuss with tying it on their neck.

“All they have to do is put one end through the loop on the other end, and they’re done,” added Escario. “Simple and easy, yet stylish.”

When the weather is chilly, the cabin crew can bundle up with a sleek denim trench coat.

They can also accessorize with straw fedora hats and a choice between nude heels (worn when outside the aircraft) and navy blue sneakers (when inside the aircraft).

The ladies are set to glow with understated makeup, with their hair in a neat braided bun. Simple pearl earrings complete their chic look.

For the men, a crisp polo shirt in the same shade of yellow goes together with denim jeans lined with yellow stitching.

Career is a rapid motion.

A course of action. Sure!

A professional conduct in life. Even a progress through life. Here we are! That means, a careerist is one, who rushes widely and makes his own personal advancement as well as his (or her) own aim in life!

What can we do, if “career doubts” won’t go away? First allow me to quote my bible, especially Jude (Watching out!

Sounding an alarm!), who writes in a style of a teacher who is watching a freight train bear down on his student’s driver. Yes, bells ring out: “Be merciful to those who doubt.” (Jude 2:22).

My parents always wanted me to become a banker. So far so good.

Why not? Maybe I would have been much more happier in my job during those times.

Maybe not? I wanted to be a journalist already at the age of 6... . Believe it or not!

The pressure “to be” (or later NOT TO BE - thank you Mr.

Shakespeare!), started early in my life. Not only my parents, also my peers and teachers began to exert their inf luences on me. Yes, I even didn’t know yet where my inclinations lay. I only knew, I wanted to become a journalist... .

Suddenly being a doctor or a lawyer?

Yes, I was interested in law and medicine at that time. I really got very lucky becoming an editor of German law magazines during my last 18 years in Germany. But I never became a lawyer - or doctor! Now, I would ask myself - who cares?

The work you do and the skills your opportunity require and the value of your work are really more vital to fulfillment. Paper work, or not... . You think, you find a better a career fit? Go ahead - but don’t expect that this your life’s career!

EXPECT the edition of the Freedom Run this year to be grander with the entry of Active Health on board. Since 2010, Unilab’s wellness PR arm Active Health has been pushing its boundaries by developing a holistic approach to every progressive athlete’s needs which is grounded by four pillars – training, nutrition, gear and other services.

Coupled that with the experience of premier local running organizer Circle Production, the event on Independence Day will surely be a blast.

Just like its predecessors since 2010, Freedom Run 2016 will be held at the Limketkai Mall entrance.

For this year, it will have four categories – 3k, 5k, 10k and 21k. The top three male and female winners per category will be recognized. There will be a registration fee of P1,100 for the 21k participants; P350 for 3k; P450 for 5k; and P650 for 10k. Except for the 21k participants, each runner will be entitled to one singlet, visor and fin kit. The 21k runners will have additional fin shirts, medals, race belts

and timing system each.

There will be discounts for registrants who band in groups of three or more.

And for the first time, pacers will be introduced to accompany and encourage runners from each category to press on. A pacer is an experienced racer who is trained to help participants maintain a steady pace.

Registration will start on March 27 and the following are the registration centers – La Cabana Spa, Limketkai Mall and Ale Restaurant.

RIGHT Rock School held its year ly Grade 3 and 4 recital last Saturday, March 4, at Limketkai Center.

A total of 62 students under the tutelage of seven music teachers rendered thei r vocal, violin,

keyboard, dr ums and guitar versions of var ious Chr istian contemporar y ar tists. The ar tists covered were Israel Houghton, Dennis Jernigan, Horatio Spafford, Matt Redman, Henr y L. Van Dyke, William M. Runyan, Char les Crozat

Converse, John New ton and Car l Gustav Boberg. The gallant teachers are Michael James Bass, Kor ina Tor res, Jill Velez, Zsydee May Peralta, John Patr ick Asiñero, Chr istian Car l Go and Seth Kenaniah Roa. For this par ticular recital, Br ight Rock School tapped the exper tise of Zion’s Praise Music, Inc. It can be recalled that for thei r ballet classes, Br ight Rock School outsourced Grace and Pointes Ballet Center.

Despite being a small institution, Br ight Rock School is able to deploy students who reap awards in interschool contests both in the academics and spor ts arenas

– stor ytelling contests, swimming and taek wondo.

In addition to this, the school has sent several swimming athletes to regional competitions and Palarong Pambansa for the last six years.

The icon sculpted by Errol Balcos is located within Duaw Kagay-an Park at the approximate place where an apparition of the Virgin of the Holy Rosary originally appeared to save the early settlement from an attacking force of slave raiders.

History of Duaw Kagayan Park Duaw Park was established in 1987 when 120 Kagay-anons from the U.S. and Canada made a historic journey home to Cagayan de Oro in August 1987 after years of self-exile to escape martial law.

Then Mayor Pablo P. “Ambing” Magtajas proposed that the side of the old tennis court by the river bank across the City Hall be created as the DUAW KAGAAN PARK. Gaane had the honor of cutting the ribbon for the opening ceremony and with a year, walkways were paved and the park was turned into a beautiful garden with benches.

The park remained unattended following the Sendong disaster until Mayor Moreno was sworn into office last June, 2013 and Ms. Pabayo worked with Mr. Gaane to muster assistance from overseas Kagay-anons through Kagay-anon International, raising US$9,300 and some corporate sponsorships to restore it.

to continue assisting his beloved city even from afar.

His daughter Anjanette related how her late father worked tirelessly to promote and assist his beloved city, initially through the Mindanao Alliance Association, the Ateneo Alumni Association, and later through his baby, Kagay-anon International, which started as a simple newsletter to update overseas Kagay-anons about current events in the city, and of their activities and milestones abroad.

“In 1982 he started TAPOK with the help of Chicago Kagay-anons, and these gatherings have continued with the 15th TAPOK in Vancouver (Canada) last year and the upcoming one in San Francisco in 2017,” she related.

Parallel with TAPOK but still under the auspices of Kagayanon International, Roy also organized DUAW sa KAGAY-AN wherein overseas Kagay-anons, especially those staying in North America, visit the Cagayan de Oro. This has since been observed every two years, alternating with the TAPOK in the U.S. or Canada, where Kagayanons gather to celebrate their city and origins.

Due to his charismatic personality, vision, tenacity and hard work, Roy has forged an incomparable camaraderie and fellowship among Kagayanons here and abroad.

No wonder one of his cyber friends called him “The Mayor of Cagayan de Oro in America.”

As Anjanette so aptly puts it, “I have heard Kagay-anons say many times how Roy epitomized Cagayan de Oro as the City of Golden Friendship because of his heart of gold. People were drawn to him because of his kindness, generosity and ability to make people feel important, at ease and to move a group to work together for a common goal.”

DSWD, DepEd, NCIP validates project site in Kiranggol SAN FERNANDO, Bukidnon – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) through the Kapit Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services - National Community Driven Development (Kalahi CIDSS-NCDDP), in partnership with the Department of Education and National Commission on Indigenous Peoples, conducted a joint Site Validation and Risk Assessment for the construction of a three-classroom school building in Sitio Kiranggol, Barangay Dao, San Fernando, Bukidnon on February 23-26, 2016.

San Fernando, Bukidnon is a Priority 1 area for the Whole of Nation Initiative implementation of the delivery of

social services and relief operations for Lumads in El Niño affected areas. Sitio Kiranggol is roughly an 8-kilometer mountain trek from Dao Elementary School that serves as an entry point to the said sitio.

Kiranggol Sitio Chairman Lestino Likawan enthused addressing the crowd, “kitang tanan magpasalamat kai niabot sila diri sa atong Sitio Kiranggol bisan tuod og layo,

mao na cguro kini ang tuman sa atong pangandoy nga edukasyon alang sa atong mga kabataan, kinahanglan kitang tanan magtinabangay ug maghiusa aron dunay katumanan sa atong pangandoy (we all are grateful that they reached Sitio Kiranngol even if it is far, this is perhaps the answer to our dream of education for our children, we all need to work together and unite to accomplish this dream).”

San Fernando will have a total construction of 22 classrooms distributed to 5

barangays to be completed by June 2016 while the rest of the priority 2 and 3 areas will commence with the social preparations within the first quarter and 2nd semester (after elections) respectively.

While San Fernando will be of top priority, areas are also included in other parts of Bukidnon which include the cities of Malaybalay and Valencia, Impasugong, Kabanglasan, Kadingilan, Kitaotao, Lantapan, Malitbog,

and Quezon. Iligan City of Lanao del Norte, Claveria and Gingoog City are also identified as key areas for the implementation of the project. This translates into a total of 28 barangays and 82 classrooms for Region 10 alone.

Regions 9, 11, 12, and 13 will also undertake this initiative and will give us an overview of a total of 605 classrooms in 251 sites.
