A
huge crowd of over 10,000 high-energy fans gave Binibining Pilipinas its biggest audience turnout in its long, illustrious history when it held this year’s muchanticipated Grand Coronation Night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum last March 18, 2018.
Dubbed as the Most Beautiful Night in the Philippines, the country’s premier beauty pageant drew a massive audience in support of their favorite candidates that they hope would represent the country in international competitions. The excitement surrounding
this batch of candidates was at its highest, and this led to the biggest number of ticket sales for the coronation night to date. With a bigger stage comprised of multiple stairs and landings, and dressed with LED monitors and lighted acrylic trimmings, it
was one of the most striking presentations of the prestigious pageant, befitting the most beautiful women in the country. The Big Dome was filled with hordes of fans with lighted signs and letters spelling out their chosen candidates’ names; some even came with whistles and other paraphernalia to cheer their favorites on. It was a night of frontrunner triumphs and interesting revelations when the judges finally announced the new Queens. The appreciative audience cheered for 2nd Runner-
up Samantha Bernardo and 1st Runner-up Vickie Rushton; they made a lot of noise when the new queens were called: Karen Gallman was named this year’s Binibining Pilipinas Intercontinental; Michele Gumabao, Binibining Pilipinas Globe; Eva Patalinjug, Binibining Pilipinas Grand International; Jehza Mae Huelar, Binibining Pilipinas Supranational; and Ahtisa Manalo, Binibining Pilipinas International. But the loudest cheers erupted when favorite Catriona Gray was
named this year’s Miss Philippines Universe. The Fil-Australian beauty who represents Albay had described joining this year’s competition as nervewracking. Her vocal and very passionate fans, collectively known as Catrionians, feel she is ripe to bring home a fourth Miss Universe title after Pia Wurtzbach. “The Binibini fans are wonderful,” say Mrs. Stella Marquez Araneta, Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. chair. “They give so much love to the ladies; their support really boosts the
candidates’ confidence, and sees them thru the trying periods in this competition. We will not be able to keep doing this without them.” The new Queens are now busy doing media interviews and other Binibini-related appearances. Catch more of them on the official Binibining Pilipinas Facebook page (@realbbpilipinas) and the official website. For pageant fanatics, the Binibining Pilipinas 2018 souvenir magazine is also being sold at the Snaxx counter of Gateway Cineplex, 4th level, Gateway Mall.

Valedictory address of Nicole Rose Baculio from Xavier Ateneo Class of 2018:
'We are called to be advocates of peace' (This is the valedictory speech of Nicole Rose Baculio, Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English, who graduated cum laude, Class of 2018 Valedictorian, and Outstanding Graduate Awardee of the School of Education of Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan, delivered during the Academic Convocation on March 22 at the XU Gymnasium.) To University President Father Roberto C Yap of the Society of Jesus, members of the Board of Trustees, honored guests, faculty, formators, staff, parents, relatives, and my fellow graduates, good morning. Last May of 2017, as I switched online on my social media account, news about the outbreak of war in Marawi flooded my newsfeed. I chatted with my co-officers in the Central Student Government to plan on what to do, and on how to respond. It was the longest night of my life. I felt like I was compelled to do something. I was not able to sleep well knowing that kilometers away from home, there were people watching their homes turned into ashes. I was disturbed thinking that the cicadas were gunshots and bomb explosions near the city. My thoughts wander to a land I have never stepped foot in. When half of the world is suffering, half of it is continuing the mundane pace of life. In Ateneo, we were taught to find God in all
things, and in situations like these, God is telling us to do something, so that sleepless night urged me to fight for a cause, and to volunteer in Tabang Marawi. My fellow volunteers and I packed goods and personal necessities. We
received donations and distributed them. We asked for updates, and I personally looked for progress over the news but still, every time a 6x6 truck filled with soldiers ready for combat passed by the highway, I was advocates/PAGE 7

XU English department chairwoman Dr Lilia Cotejar on women and nature By Keziah Escabarte
Nature and women were both celebrated in the latest installment of the Xavier English Language and Literature’s annual literary seminar “Over a Cup of Coffee.” This year’s theme was aptly titled “Nature, Women, and Wisdom” and was organized
collaboratively with the Ecocriticism class of Dr Arlene Yandug and the Practicum 2 class of Ann Catherine Acenas. The talk was held at the Xavier University Little Theater on March 8, coinciding with the International Women’s Day. The auspicious date, despite landing on a busy Thursday, still gathered a number of audiences for the event. The main speaker, English department chairwoman Dr Lilia Cotejar, talked about women’s deep connection to nature in Ninotchka Rosca’s novel “State of War” (1988). Regaling women/PAGE 7

Gina eyes DOST’s CEST program to help alleviate poverty “We can get our country out of poverty and I need the help of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST),” so said Regina Pas “Gina” Lopez, famous environmentalist and philanthropist during the National Science and Technology Week celebration in 2015. She was looking at DOST’s program called CEST, or the Community Empowerment through Science and Technology, as the “help” she needs to aid the country in getting out of poverty. CEST is a program of the DOST which aims to alleviate poverty through S&T interventions in health and nutrition, water and sanitation, basic education and literacy, livelihood and enterprise development, and disaster risk reduction and management. Breaking new ground through ‘The Quest’ Known for being a pioneer in corporate social responsibility, Lopez has taken her advocacy to the next level. Her foundation called “ILOVE” or Investments in Loving Organizations for Village Economies launched “Quest for LOVE,” a nationwide search for loving organizations seeking to transform marginalized communities into agroforestry, fisheries, or ecotourism sites. Recently, ILOVE reached out to several government agencies to
give a hand. Because of its CEST program, the DOST naturally became one of the ILOVE’s partners. Other partner government agencies include Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Tourism, Department of National Defense, Department of Public Works and Highways, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, the Social Economy Action Research Foundation, Bayan Academy for Social Entrepreneurship and Human Resource Development, and the private sector. The ILOVE-government partnership was able to raise P5 million. Because of its noble intent, ILOVE caught the
heart of DOST Secretary Fortunato T. de la Peña. “I would like to express my admiration to the Quest for LOVE. This is very relevant, timely, and innovative. We have a program that matches ILOVE very well and we call it CEST,” said the Secretary during the launch. To date, the CEST program has already benefited many grassroot communities around the country. One example is Barangay Apang in Alilem, Ilocos Sur which was dubbed as the “poorest of the poor” in most surveys. Farmers and fisherfolks are now able to find alternative income by selling fruits and vegetables in nearby markets and stores to be able to buy other goods for their families. Unlike the usual reality TV competitions that showcase talents
such as singing and dancing, the Quest for LOVE wants to put the spotlight to loving organizations that are passionate and goaldriven. “The stand of ILOVE is to bring genuine economic growth through area development,” Lopez said. “Why do we just give awards to those who sing well? Why don’t we give awards to communities that have the guts and creativity to help themselves get out of poverty?” she added. The competition will feature the journey of the transforming poor communities into social and economic enterprises in a reality TV show that Lopez will produce. Area development The “Lola Sayong Eco Surf Camp” is one of the continuous projects of
the ILOVE foundation and can be found in Gubat, Sorsogon. It was initiated by a kind old lady who decided to transform her property into a beachfront paradise where local street kids were provided food, and shelter and jobs by giving surfing lessons to tourists. “They have a really beautiful surf but the people there were really poor. So when I went there, I got money from Energy Development Corporation (EDC) and this is how we use it: we put surf boards, boat refurbishing, beach tents, multi-purpose hall, toilet and shower facilities, and glass bottom floating cottages. It is area development,” Lopez said. From being a poor community, Gubat has grown to be a role model for area development.
According to her, they invested P1.5 million for area development in Gubat. After a year, their gross revenue already increased to P5.9 million. “Because of the investment of P1.5 million, agriculture and fisheries came up. The cost of transportation was affected because a lot of people are going there. Also, other ecotourism sites sprang up in nearby towns like Sorsogon City, Bulusan, and Matnog,” she added. The project also provided new services as the town now has massage therapists and tourist guides as well as emerging developments in other micro enterprises such as T-shirt printing, souvenirs, handicrafts, and food production. The quest for the change agent “One thing that I want to say from my experience is that: the key is the change agent. You can have a lot of money, scientists, or government assistance, but if you do not have a change agent, it is not going to work,” Lopez remarked. She added, “The spirit of the Quest is to search for loving organizations that have the LOVE idea: a great, splendid idea on how to lift up village economies.” The Quest is open to social enterprises, cooperatives, people’s associations, foundations, NGOs, and poverty/PAGE 6
The ASEAN Foundation and SAP received coveted PR Award for best practice in Public Services campaign Accolade highlights how public and private sector organisations can win together to drive purpose-led missions The ASEAN Foundation and enterprise software company SAP SE (NYSE: SAP) are proud to announce the industry recognition for their strategic collaboration to drive social impact in ASEAN. Both organisations received the Gold award for the Best PR Campaign in Public Services category at the Marketing Magazine’s PR Awards 2018 Gala Dinner held in Singapore on March 16. First launched and announced in 2017, the ASEAN Foundation and SAP are now into their second year of strategic collaboration under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly roll out initiatives based on two strategic pillars, namely Education and Entrepreneurship. The initiatives are aimed at equipping ASEAN youths
with the skills they need to tackle society’s problems and thrive in the digital economy; build the capacity of innovative social enterprises that put young people on the path to more successful careers and build a more effectively skilled workforce for the IT sector with training and workforce development programmes. “This award is a proofpoint that public and private sector organisations can win together while working handin-hand to drive positive social impact and benefit the wider community at large. Our first year of collaboration saw some great outcomes through programmes such as the ASEAN Data Science Explorers, Youth Volunteering Innovation Challenge and the SAP Social Sabbatical programme which benefited 9
of the top 50 ASEAN social enterprises. As both the ASEAN Foundation and SAP continue to leverage on the momentum of our collaboration from 2017, we hope to inspire more public and private sector organisations to step up to the challenge and work together, share capabilities and resources, to drive sustainable social outcomes,” said Elaine Tan, the Executive Director of the ASEAN Foundation. “SAP saw a successful collaboration with the ASEAN Foundation in 2017. Our shared purpose to prepare today's youths for tomorrow's world has led to incredible results in engaging ASEAN youths with more effective capabilities and skills that they need for the Digital Economy. We had over the past year communicated extensively to inspire
volunteerism, collaboration and impact, by telling the stories of our collaboration and purpose in service to the ASEAN public. The PR Award validates the joint efforts between both organisations, and we hope to inspire the industry to embark on this similar journey,” said Eugene Ho, Head of Corporate Affairs, SAP Southeast Asia. Organised by Marketing magazine, the PR Awards is a regional awards show dedicated to celebrating the most talented campaigns from the region’s public relations function. The champions for 2018 were chosen by a jury made up of senior communications experts from brands across the region. Visit this page to check out the full list of winners in 2018.

Humans play role in climate change Already in 2013, the UN climate panel blames humans for global warming and warns of rising temperatures and says global warming could have devastating effects as the risk of heat waves, f loods and droughts increases. Rather than debating the facts of climate change, oil companies in the dock in California are questioning how long a climate consensus has existed. Two cities are suing oil companies for costs related to global warming. An attorney for the Chevron oil company acknowledged in federal court that the company agreed with the scientific consensus showing humans are responsible for global warming. But Chevron attorney Theodore Boutrous told the court in San Francisco that the scientific consensus on greenhouse gas emissions was not fully formed until the past decade. “The notion that we know today of a dynamic changing climate is relatively new in human understanding,” he said. San Francisco and Oakland are suing the five oil giants — Chevron, Exxon Mobil, ConocoPhillips, Royal Dutch Shell and British Petroleum — seeking to set up an abatement fund that would force the oil companies to help the cities pay for f lood damage and preventative measures they say are the result of global warming. To clear the air city by city - might this be possible? Despite Chevron’s admission, the oil giants asked the court to dismiss the case, in part because Congress has given regulatory agencies authority over the production and discharge of greenhouse gas emissions. US District Judge William Alsup said he wants to strip away the politics and “stick to the science” behind the issue. He called on both sides to present “the best science now available on global warming.” “This is a serious proposition to try to educate
the judge,” Alsup said. Have My Say Legal experts said they have never seen a judge holding a tutorial on climate change, and they are eager to see how the oil companies explain global warming. Chevron’s Boutrous said the oil giant backs a 2013 report by Klaus Doring the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which concluded it was “extremely likely” that humans are contributing to global warming. The Artic sea ice thins as polar bears shed pounds. But Boutrous insisted that earlier reports by the IPCC were less certain. When Alsup asked Boutrous if the other four oil companies agreed with his presentation, Boutrous said he was only speaking for Chevron. The attorneys for the other four oil firms generally acknowledge the reality of man-made global warming, but none of them answered questions during last week’s court hearing. What does that tell us? To say it neutral but very clear: people are keep on passing the buck to others. They keep on leaving others to hold the baby, while our planet keeps on dying. The five oil companies argued in court papers filed last Tuesday that they should not be held liable for the effects of global warming, which is caused by “billions” of parties and “complex environmental phenomena occurring worldwide over many decades.” Trying to make some excuses? Or is it the naked truth? Despite the wide scientific consensus, US President Donald Trump has turned US climate policy on its head since taking office 14 months role/PAGE 6

PLDT leads the way in digital finance transformation
S
Telco giant taps SAP RAR towards adoption of IFRS standards
AP SE (NYSE: SAP) announced today the completion of the SAP Revenue Accounting and Reporting (RAR) solution implementation for PLDT, Inc., the
country’s largest telecommunications company. This implementation makes PLDT the first in the Philippines to use RAR as a step in addressing the
International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) compliance requirements. The project is part of PLDT’s digital finance transformation efforts. It is aimed to
continuously improve business processes to adopt to changing market and regulatory requirements. The company first adopted SAP Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) in 2006
(From left: Ella Mangubat - SAP Philippines Digital Business Services General Manager, Albert Billones – Head of IT CSS for PLDT, Claus Andresen – President and Managing Director of SAP Southeast Asia, Chaye Cabal-Revilla, SVP and PLDT Group Controller and concurrent Smart CFO and Edler Panlilio, Managing Director of SAP Philippines)
in order to streamline and standardize finance practices across the group and to change the role of Finance from bookkeeper to enterprise controller, business planner and adviser. This paved the way to increased transparency, improved reporting capabilities and faster decision-making. Over the next few years, PLDT’s Finance Team has initiated additional technology-enabled process enhancements in the area of treasury and cash management, investment management and most recently in the legal and management consolidation functions with SAP Business Planning and Consolidation (BPC). 2017 proved to be yet another significant year as PLDT prepared for transformation in financial reporting and compliance. With the
adoption of SAP RAR, PLDT’s SAP system is able to generate reports that helped the company towards the adoption of IFRS 15, a new revenue recognition standard, mandated by the Philippine Financial Reporting Standards Council (FRSC) and the Board of Accountancy, which took effect last January 2018.[1] The new IFRS 15 revenue recognition standard eliminates the transaction and industry-specific revenue recognition guidance under current U.S. GAAP and replaces it with a principlebased approach for determining revenue recognition. The change can affect companies’ reported revenue, how and when they report financial performance, and overall financial decision making. pldt/PAGE 6

usher in a new digital era in finance within PLDT. As a publicly listed company in the Philippines and in the U.S., it is crucial for us to move forward towards IFRS 15 – both at a country and global standard level.” Revilla also noted that as a large and diversified conglomerate, the PLDT Group has challenges in integrating different organizations and different Lines of Business who usually maintain their own operation and system of record. With the latest SAP technologies, PLDT is able to look into these entities’ performance and contribution to PLDT consolidated operations. Soon, when S4HANA becomes its digital core, PLDT will be able to embark on another Finance Transformation project that will be focused on business users’ empowerment,
predictive capabilities, collaboration between Lines of Business and partner networks and mobile-ready applications. Commenting on the completion of the project, Edler Panlilio, SAP Philippines Managing Director, said “For SAP, it has always been our purpose to help Filipino conglomerates like PLDT to run better. With this strong collaboration, we are extending SAP’s expertise to guide them in their journey towards digital transformation just as SAP has enabled the world’s leading conglomerates to run better.” “Our best consultants around the world have been pulled in to moving this complex project forward,” adds Ella Mangubat, SAP Philippines Digital Business Services (DBS) General Manager, whose team led the
implementation. “PLDT has also embraced SAP cloud solutions which showed a very strong commitment for a true digital transformation. We at Digital Business Services will provide PLDT all the support they need in their journey.” The SAP Revenue Accounting and Reporting (RAR) application automates and simplifies revenue accounting and supports companies as they comply with both current and impending accounting standards. This is the first in a series of International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS) solutions from SAP designed to help finance executives comply with IFRS 15, IFRS 16 and IFRS 9. crippled with the thought that while I was enjoying every piece of comfort, thousands of people were suffering. Every night, I asked myself, what help have I done? One of the reasons why peace continues to be elusive is because of the ongoing use of violence to achieve one’s ideological, religious, and political goals. Violence — violent extremism in particular — has agitated our archipelago and the world. However, it shall not stand victorious over the resilience and courage of Filipinos. Now, as Ateneans, how do we respond to this call? I am inspiring you to do "Three Ms" for Mindanao, for the country, and the world. First, make Magis love in action. We always think of Magis as "the more" but now, we have to make Magis a way of manifesting love and through that, we will be able to go the extra mile. Amidst the challenges brought about by violent extremism and other issues in the society, we must continue to face everything with love because through that, we will be able to overcome any kind of violence.

While the Marawi siege happened, the concept of love was almost forgotten because anger and violence overshadowed it. Fr Arrupe SJ said, “Fall in love, stay in love, and it will decide everything,” and I can say that it means being in love with our home, Mindanao, stay in love with our fellowmen no matter how diverse we are, and let that love decide the peace that rules our homeland. Through love, we can overcome adversities. Second, manifest genuine service for others. A few days from now, I will be a teacher. Some of us here will become engineers, businessmen/ women, agriculturists, journalists, scientists, psychologists, nurses, computer experts, and tech-voc specialists. It is our greatest challenge to live out our values and principles beyond the portals of Xavier Ateneo. Violence can be fought when teachers become more sensitive to the individual needs of others, when doctors and nurses become more compassionate and caring towards their patients and their families, when engineers provide quality
designs and solutions, when agriculturists innovate for agricultural sustainability, when businessmen and women give more importance to labor development, when computer specialists develop programs to help mankind, when tech-voc specialists find ways to enhance their skills in their respective fields, and when public servants manifest what service truly means. Therefore, when we go to our respective fields, remember that genuine service is uplifting the dignity of others, and it is not a mere charity work. Through service, we can build a more humane society. Lastly, meet the world with a wider perspective. Today, our world needs professionals with eyes open to variations of reality and with open minds. It needs people who will advocate for peace in the expanse of threat and risk. When I volunteered for Tabang Marawi, and read poems as a tribute for our soldiers, I think I have not met much of the world yet because when we meet the world, we ought to continuously respond to its call for peace and service.
7
There are voices waiting to be heard, and we have to widen our perspectives to fully listen to these voices. When we listen to them, we will understand why people are oppressed, why people fight for their rights, and why people battle against violent extremism. Through a wider perspective, we can be empathetic citizens in this world. In order to counter violent extremism, let us remember the Three Ms: Make Magis love in action; Manifest genuine service for others; and Meet the world with a wider perspective. We are Ateneans, and we are called to be advocates of peace and for peace, who are precursors of justice, ingenuity, and integrity. Above all, the foundation of peace is faith that does service for others. My fellow graduates, if you will bump into an Atenean ten years from now, do not hesitate to ask him/her this question, “How do you truly respond to the call?” My best answer is, “Love what you do dearly. Extend service to others genuinely and see the world more clearly. Through these, we will be able to set the world on fire.”
