ne of Cagayan de Oro’s ICT Pioneers has been selected as one of the two Filipino delegates to the Eisenhower Fellowship in the United States.
Stephanie Picardal Caragos, President and CEO of Syntactics, Inc., set up the trailblazing BPO firm in 2000 and is also one of the founders of the Cagayan de Oro ICT Council, of which she is a former chair. “I want to learn and find ways how to further improve our IT workforce and know what are the requirements in quality and skill and processes in our industry,” Ms.
Caragos said. “On my part, I want to learn more from the field of IT, IT training and education, leadership and management.” A passionate advocate for the tech sector as a transformative economic tool, Ms. Caragos uses IT mentoring and business development to deliver a higher standard of living to college graduates from low income Mindanao families. Her efforts have helped make Mindanao
a tech center, increase the pool of IT talent, and enhance prosperity and quality of life. Ms. Caragos set up her own start up with Elite Business Systems (EBS) Accounting Software Solutions which later evolved into a new corporation as Syntactics, Inc in 2006. She later founded LetIThelp.org, a social enterprise that Stephanie P. Caragos pairs local tech college graduates with Syntactics career mentors. In Cagayan de Oro City, an unassuming local snack is thrust into center stage this year as both a historical artifact and a residual contemporary influence of the long-ago galleon trade between the Philippine islands and Acapulco. The Cagayan de Oro Hotel and Restaurant Association (COHARA) in cooperation with the Department of Tourism Region 10 and SM CDO showcase the binaki – a steamed cake made of grated young corn, mixed with milk and sugar, and wrapped in corn husk – in its “Binaki ug Kape Festival” on April 21, 2016 at SM City Cagayan de Oro. The festival is part of the 2nd Flavors of the Philippines, one of the three main components of Madrid Fusion and
a nationwide festival highlighting the best of Filipino cuisines launched by the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB). As a colonial power, Spain ruled the Philippines through Mexico: the archipelago was, in fact, governed as a province of the South American stronghold. This dynamic exchange of goods, services, and people brought over the traditional Mesoamerican dish tamal (plural: tamales; hence, the American tamale). Power firm helps eliminate child wasting March 26 - April 1, 2016
Villanueva, Misamis Oriental –The cases of child wasting (being too thin for one’s height) in Brgy. San Martin this municipality had been successfully eliminated following the completion of a 10-month schoolbased nourishment program jointly undertaken by the local government units, the Department of Education and power producer
STEAG State Power Inc. (SPI). During a recent stakeholders forum, San Martin Elementary School Principal Ma. Theresa Delegencia reported that the cases of 174 severely wasted pupils identified during the start of the school year in 2015 dropped to zero in March 2016. Last year, San Martin ranked 1st among the 11 public
schools in Villanueva in the incidence of child wasting, prompting SPI to adopt the school as one of the beneficiaries of its comprehensive Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program. About P0.9 million worth of assistance was earmarked to cover costs of daily schoolbased feeding activities, conduct of responsible
parenting and maternal care seminars, and the construction of a onestory building for use as Children Nourishment Center. The Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) reported that in 2015, some 21.5% of Filipino children under five years old are underweight. With this figure, the Philippines missed one of its Millenium Development Goals (MDG) of reducing by half the percentage of
underweight children from 27.3% in 1990 to 13.6% by 2015. The FNRI also reported that the prevalence of stunting (being too short for one's age) among Filipino children under age 5 increased from 30.3% in 2013 to 33.4% in 2015, while the prevalence of child wasting among Filipino children under age 5 stood at 7.1%. The cases of underweight, malnutrition, stunting and wasting affect not only the physical health of children, but also their
mental development. If unabated, these conditions will cause irreversible damage which may last until adulthood, ultimately affecting their productivity in the long run. SPI’s support in addressing communitybased social problems forms part of the company’s continuing commitment to help improve quality of life of the people in its host communities in Misamis Oriental.

When old people die, some relatives or friends would say: It’s good for him or her. He/she has played his/ her role in life and on earth already!. When Jesus finally gave up His spirit on the cross after three hours of bitter agony, the Pharisees said: “Finally, that impostor is gone! He deserved to die that kind of death!” But for Jesus, dying was not the end of everything. It was the beginning of a new life. For three days
after His burial, He rose from His grave on that bright Easter Sunday morning, Yes, resurrection means life. Symbolically, we see that Easter Resurrection of our Lord depicted in various ways, which always point to life after death. Especially in parts of the world, where deep winter let all plants and trees “sleep” for a couple of months, people enjoy the spirit of the new shoots coming out of a big trunk of a tree. They enjoy the seedlings that protrude from the ground in spring, the violet, red, and yellow little f lowers emerging from the soil; the new leaves sprouting from the seemingly dead branches and the well-known Easter egg, out of which a new life germinates. Eggs were usually symbols used in springtime long before Christianity
came into existence. The egg symbolizes life, which is causing to grow. Since Easter usually occurs at springtime (March, April, which should be already summer season in the Philippines), this egg-symbol was still in the use among the pagans of early times when Christians were celebrating Easter. The Church allowed converted pagans to retain the custom of egg during spring to symbolize germination of life, but not anymore to Ishtar, the goddess of Spring. Austen H. Layard explained in his book “Nineveh and Babylon II, page 629”, that the term “Easter” came from goddess Ishtar, because of dig out monuments, carrying Ishtar’s name, of him in Nineveh. But, this egg should symbolize the new life, won for humanity by the resurrection of Christ.

ublic and private sector leaders of Cagayan de Oro City committed to help drive the city’s inclusive and resilient economic growth as they joined the Stakeholders’ Forum on March 11 at Rosario Pavilion, organized by the U.S. Embassy Manila’s United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The Stakeholders Forum, a multi-sectoral mix of national agency, local government, business, and civil society leaders from Cagayan de Oro
City, will serve as a mechanism to identify, prioritize and lead the implementation of USAID’s Strengthening Urban Resilience for Growth with Equity (SURGE) Project. USAID Philippines Economic Growth Specialist John Avila and Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Oscar Moreno, together with more than 100 representatives from the city government, business sector, academe and civil society organizations participated in the forum. The result of the SURGE rapid assessment and
opportunities for the development of the city were tackled, as well as current and future scenarios to give context in identifying strategic development goals the city can pursue in the next five to fifteen years. The city government’s electronic Building Permit Management System (e-BPMS) was also launched during the forum. The e-BPMS aims to streamline and automate the tedious construction permitting process which involves 32 steps, taking as long as 90 days to complete—a major bottleneck in starting a business in the city. The e-BPMS features a digital blueprint and signature, a checklist generator, and a randomizer. Now just 12 steps which can be completed in about 5 days, the system is accessible online through the city’s official website. It was developed by the city
in partnership with the Mindanao University of Science and Technology, with support from the USAID/INVEST Project. The SURGE Project builds on milestones achieved by other USAID projects and supports second-tier cities like Cagayan de Oro City to become economically thriving and resilient growth centers outside the urban core of Manila, with increased levels of investment, employment, and disaster risk preparedness for both the city and adjacent rural areas. Now on its first year, the project will assist the city in improving urban development and planning, promoting low-emission local economic development, facilitating greater connectivity and access between urban and rural areas, and promoting social inclusion. SURGE is the flagship activity of USAID's Cities Development Initiative, an integral part of the US-Philippines' Partnership for Growth where Cagayan de Oro is one of its current 6 cities. The International City/County Management Association (ICMA), a global organization composed of almost 9,000 city, town and county managers who work to professionalize local government management around the world, is the main implementing partner for SURGE.

Why Fitness Actually Matters:
How to Embrace Aging and Activities of Daily Living (ADL) By Noel Villa
Activities of Daily Living (ADL) are selfcare routine tasks and activities that we do on a daily basis such as walking, dressing, bathing, brushing teeth and eating. These are the functional tasks that people normally do everyday and require some sort of physical fitness to perform efficiently. As we age, however, the efficiency level to perform ADL somehow lessens bit by bit and without regular physical fitness intervention, we may find ourselves aging faster and depressed on our inability to do simple tasks. Growing up in the UK, I learned that one of the reasons why elderly people are admitted to Care Homes or Home for the Aged is because of their poor ability to perform ADL and they have no one else that they can depend on to look after them. Daily activities like getting out of bed, walking up the stairs, standing up from a seated position and most especially lifting themselves up from the toilet are real struggles for elderly people so they need someone to take care of them regularly which the Home Care can provide. In Filipino culture, we are taught to look after our elders in our own house when they get old
that is why Home Care Centers for the elderly are not as many here in the Philippines. But not everyone can afford to hire a caretaker and the family member tasked to look after the elder also need to go to work most of the time, hence it is quite important that the elder can do some ADL on his or her own at some point, unless he or she is already physically immobile. This is why physical fitness matters. So how can we embrace aging and perform ADL more efficiently? Here are some points to help you: --> Have the right mindset about fitness There are many misconceptions about fitness especially when business steps in. Companies in the fitness industry usually market their products and services towards younger people. What’s worse is that fitness is being branded as Abs, Sexy, Vanity or Appeal in magazines, television commercials, print advertisements and even in the movies we watch without highlighting its true meaning and importance. Fitness is the condition of being fit and healthy to perform our daily tasks, and having abs or being sexy and appealing are just the bonus effects. As we age, abs and sex appeal vanish but with
regular and continuous fitness activities, we can still perform our ADL and that is what truly matters. --> Understand your body and know how to take better care of it People tend to forget the importance of fitness to stay strong so we can move around as we get older. Whether we like it or not, aging naturally slows down our metabolic rate (while women who are post menopausal may gain 6 lbs of body fat per year) that is why it is important to have the right diet and perform regular exercise to maintain lean tissue.
Losing time at the back end of our life is inevitable and unless we lead a healthy lifestyle while we are younger, it can save us from all the common health issues of the elderly such as high blood pressure and diabetes as well as mobility and strength problems. --> Eat healthy and exercise wisely There is no hard and fast rule on eating and exercise because each of us has a different schedule, ability, taste and genetic make-up. Physical fitness should not be equated to Powerlifting nor taking steroids or picking up
500 lbs barbell. Some can exercise for 35-40 minutes of strength training for 3 days in a week while others can only do a 20-minute low impact exercise routine or a 10-minute walk around the park due to their busy schedule. But what truly matters is that exercise must be a part of your ADL. Equally important is to adopt clean eating habits by choosing healthy food that will be beneficial to you without having to sacrifice flavor and satisfaction from your food. --> Functional training for ADL Conventional
workouts target muscle strength and cardiovascular fitness while functional training covers a broader range of physical movements and exercise that mirror everyday movement patterns like bending, twisting, pushing and pulling which are the very same movements a person needs to carry a heavy grocery bag, squat in the toilet or reach out for an item on a high shelf with ease.
