he Boy Scout who saw General Douglas MacArthur at the Macabalan Pier on that Friday morning of March 13, 1942 is now officially a hero. The Boys Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) Cagayan de Oro Council gave a posthumous award to Scout Abelardo Neri Queppet during the 75th Diamond Jubilee Commemorative Program for Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s Breakout from Corregidor to Australia held Friday, March 17, 2017 at the Casa Real, VIP Hotel. BSP Cagayan de Oro Council Chair Atty. Roy Hilario P. Raagas said the council granted the late Scout Queppet a posthumous award for his valiant deeds as a Boy Scout in enforcing the blackout and directing traffic under dangerous circumstances in Plaza Divisoria in 1942. Hunter asked Loloy to be at the parola (lighthouse) in Macabalan at 7PM. Upon his arrival, Sgt. Hunter told him they were expecting General Douglas MacArthur to arrive between midnight and dawn. Sure enough, at 7AM of Friday, March 13, 1942, MacArthur and his party disembarked from two PT Boats at Macabalan Pier and rode a convoy of military vehicles to the Del Monte airfield in nearby Tankulan, Bukidnon.
But not before the General noticed the Boy Scout and his bike (who saluted him with the three fingered Boy Scout salute), standing by the gangplank where they were disembarking (now the site of the flagpole for the Cagayan de Oro Port Management Office of the Philippine Ports Authority). HE Office of Civil Defense (OCD) 10 under director Liza Mazo and past director Ana Caneda have vowed to support the peace initiatives of homegrown group Artsada. This, after Mazo described the ongoing conf lict between the government and various rebel fronts as a “human calamity.” She then went on saying that the mandate of OCD is not limited to natural calamities but including those human-induced ones. Mazo herself graced the March exhibit of Artsada at Limketkai Center last Monday aptly called ArtPeace. The exhibit would run until the 27th of this month. Ten artists from Artsada participated in the exhibit consisting of 21 artworks in acrylic, oil and watercolour medium. The ten are Mark Bailo, Leonil Bagayna, Marigold Cherie Garrido, Jayson Labtan, June Murcilla, Jemar Abay, Ruth Michelle Bayron, Christy
Alcantara, Christian Llanos and Harold Paul Lumang. They were joined by two Yahshua Intelex tutees – Totti Alexander Sambiuad and Troy Sambiuad – as well as four MOGCHS Special Program for the Arts students – Gemma Lou Ayunan, Hanna Marie Carpenter, Reiner John Uba and Nina Theresa Moskera. Meanwhile, Artsada will be opening its summer workshop classes starting this April 3 in four batches – two batches at Limketkai Center (the second will start on May 5 through 31) and two batches at Magill’s Bistro which is just across the street from Yahshua Intelex tutorial center along Masterson Ave. The registration fee will be P4,500 inclusive of art materials, certificate, T-shirt and display of your kid’s artworks during the finale art exhibit in May. Topics to be included in the 12 sessions are colour therapy, sculpture, basic elements, painting, portrait and pastel.

A VOTE FOR EUROPE... ... a vote against extremists! Yes, European leaders breathe easier now! With his first-place finish in the Netherlands’ elections, Mark Rutte has effectively halted the rightwing populist Geert Wilders. German Chancellor Angela Merkel is among the European leaders welcoming the result. Merkel, at this very moment (Friday, March 17,2017) meeting U.S. President Donald Trump, says Dutch election result sends pro-Europe signal. Both the vote count tallies and the reactions poured in during the early hours of last Thursday morning as politicians and individuals across Europe and the world took in the results of Wednesday’s parliamentary election in the Netherlands. In what many considered to be a bellwether election for the European Union, the center-right Rutte clearly defeated Wilders in what many saw as a symbolic victory against European populism. With 54 percent of the vote counted, the projected results indicated Rutte scored a commanding victory, earning 33 out of the Dutch parliament’s 150 seats. Many European leaders offered congratulatory messages to the acting Dutch prime minister, who will now stay on in office for a third term. But just as many chose to highlight Wilders’ defeat, framing his party’s second place finish with 20 seats - far below the 30-odd seats he had been predicted to win - as a resounding success for the unity and democratic values of a European Union battered by populism from both within and outside the bloc. The response from Berlin came quickly. German Chancellor Angela Merkel phoned Rutte to offer her congratulations as well as her readiness to work with him and his new government, which he will now have to form with parliamentary alliances. Of course, Merkel faces her own electoral test in September this year when Germans will cast their votes for the national parliament. The head of government from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) will seek to remain in office, though her primary rival and
current coalition partner’s H ave M y Say candidate Martin Schulz has been polling neck and neck with her. Schulz, a member of the Social Democratic Party, took to Twitter to celebrate Wilder’s defeat. “I am relieved,” the former EU parliamentarian wrote. “But we must continue to Klaus Doring fight for an open and free Europe!” For many the right-wing nightmare is everywhere. Also Germany hosts its own populist party, the Alternative for Germany (AfD), whose success has been fed by the arrival of over a million refugees and migrants to Europe since 2015 and fears of terrorism linked to Islam. However, the party has been struggling in recent polls due to internal divisions. And then: France is up next for national elections. Outgoing French President Francois Hollande welcomed Rutte’s victory as a triumph against extremism. France is indeed the next country in Europe to confront its own right-wing populist movement in spring presidential elections. Polls currently show the National Front’s Marine Le Pen winning the firstround of voting in April but falling short in the May run-off. However, a seemingly never-ending scandal that has engulfed conservative candidate Francois Fillon and a newly launched probe into travels undertaken by the political youngster Emmanuel Macron means the election’s course remains wide open. e are indeed in great sadness over the unimaginable loss of a visionary in the Tourism industry, a mentor, colleague and a friend to many. One of his beliefs in life was the importance of being authentic with people, saying what needs to be said and do what’s need to be done especially if it concerns his family and profession. Director Butch and his beautiful spirit will live through the love of his life-his son, Aldrich. We are witnesses of the great love and bond this father and son share for the last 16 years. His tourism programs and projects in the provinces he has served will speak of how great this man is. Our hearts
are aching but heaven is one star brighter. How do we describe the most self-less person we know? How do we explain the multitude of ways he made us feel better of ourselves, or how he never missed the opportunity to encourage us? Recursos: A Narrative of Reality March 20-26, 2017

A heart-wrenching piece that depicts the power of vengeance; a story that shows how in madness, love can push people into doing the unfathomable, the irrevocable. “Hamlet”, originally written by the renowned playwright William Shakespeare, was adapted into Layeta Bucoy’s “Recursos” to fit its timeless message to the Philippine context. Masterfully directed by Bart Savior, the play was presented by The Xavier Stage (TXS) last February 24, 2017 to March 1, 2017. The plot revolved around Eric (Hamlet), the heir to his family’s mining industry. Haunted by his father’s ghost, he went through madness in coping with his father’s death while exerting his best efforts to avenge him at the same time. In his struggle for vengeance, he drowned in paranoia and insanity as he was blinded by anger, fear, and betrayal. He experienced this while having to deal with major problems in their mining industry, Recursos, his mother’s immediate remarriage with his Uncle Enrique (Claudius), and his
unmended relationship with his girlfriend, Nina (Ophelia). This upheaval of events built constant internal conflicts within Eric, thus also adding to his hostility towards the people around him. These neverending struggles and complexities all, in turn, added to the play’s air of drama, madness, and love. This, along with its artistic excellence, literary value, and timely theme made Recursos one of the best ensembles TXS has ever staged. Recursos ticked every box when it came to artistic and technical excellence. Upon watching the play, I could see that every technical aspect was set in place. It was compelling to watch the actors go beyond themselves in becoming their characters. They played their roles so believably- each line thrown with emotion, each action with motive and cause. It wasn’t seeing individual actors and actresses putting on a performance, as it was witnessing the Recursos’ characters breathing, feeling, and living in front of me. Moreover, the set design made
a great impact on the portrayal of this tragedy. While it may have been minimalistic, it definitely was not mediocre. I believe there was value in the stage’s simplicity as it also moved the audience to be one with the cast in imagining and breathing life into the play. Every other technicality was well-executed. The actors’ costumes and
makeup added to the effectiveness of their portrayal; all the sound effects were played on cue, and the script itself added to the message’s understandability. Furthermore, Recursos’ literary value made it an interesting story to experience. The plot itself was filled with complexities framed through the lens of
conscience. The mere fact that Eric faced conflict in each scene, both internal and external, built up the heaviness in the series of events. This, along with his character development stimulated thought and emotion as the play progressed. It not only depicted his struggles, it made us think of those of our own. Leading up
to the climax where Eric himself no longer knew whether the vengeance he sought justified his actions mirroredthe confusions we all face within. I think it washis rawness and relatablility that made “Recursos” all the more meaningful and unique. His actions, paved by his intentions, made the audience reflect recursos/PAGE 7

Among the cast of reenactors, (and unknown to world history save for the local yarn as told by Loloy to Ms. Gorra), was Boy Scout Abelardo “Loloy” Neri Queppet, who was played by his 9-year old grand nephew Clark Dexter M. Prudente of the Baden-Powell Troop of Xavier University High School, the same troop of by his late grand uncle when he met MacArthur. Scout Loloy Queppet passed on in September 2008. of their own struggles. Lastly, more than the acting and the plot, Recursos’ timely message made it very thoughtprovoking. I liked how the play did not stray too far from reality. If anything, it was a vivid reflection of it. It was a representation of unjust structures, family complications, and identity confusion. It highlighted problems in the context of the Philippines such as the environmental threat of mining, rape culture, and corrupt political power plays. It dwelled on the measures one would take out of familial love and loyalty, and portrayed real human emotions- anger, distress, and hatred. The ensemble was very true to life. In every way, it was full of humanity and reality. All in all, I believe Recursos is a play that shouldn’t just be enjoyed, but also deeply pondered on. I believe it was a powerful way to accentuate timely social issues and internal struggles. Indeed, it is a production that stays true to The Xavier Stage’s promise of shaping a whole new meaning to the arts by using theater as a channel to advocate social awareness and change.
