The U.P. College of Mass Communication (UP CMC) is now accepting nominations for the annual U.P. GAWAD PLARIDEL which recognizes Filipino media practitioners who have excelled in any of the media (print, radio, film, television, and new media) and have performed with the highest level of professional integrity in the interest of public service. For 2015, the eleventh U.P. Gawad Plaridel will be given to an outstanding FILM PRACTITIONER. The award is named after Marcelo H. del Pilar (nom de plume, Plaridel), the selfless propagandist whose stewardship of the reformist newspaper La Solidaridad helped crystallize nationalist
sentiments and ignite libertarian ideas in the 1890s. Like Plaridel, the recipient must believe in the vision of a Philippine society that is egalitarian, participative and progressive; and in media that are socially responsible, critical and vigilant, liberative and transformative, and free
and independent. Eligible for the awards are all living Filipino individuals who have excelled in the field of filmmaking as producer, director, scriptwriter, actor, production designer, scriptwriter, musical scorer, etc. Aside from their probity and integrity, these media
practitioners must have produced a body of work that is marked by excellence and social relevance and must have achievements recognized nationally and/or internationally. Individuals and institutions may nominate potential recipients. Institutions include
media corporations, professional media associations, media advocacy groups, educational institutions, cultural foundations, and NGOs. Previous nominees may still be considered for this year’s award. All current full-time faculty and staff of the UP CMC are disqualified from the nomination. The deadline for submission of nominations is on 30 April 2015, 5pm. The recipient of the U.P. Gawad Plaridel 2015 will be announced in May 2015. The U.P. GAWAD PLARIDEL will be given in August in commemoration of del Pilar’s birth anniversary. The awardee will receive the U.P. Gawad Plaridel trophy (designed by National Artist
Napoleon Abueva) and will deliver the Plaridel Lecture addressing issues relevant to the state and practice of Philippine media. The recipient will have a place of honor at all ceremonies and functions of the College. The recipient’s portrait will be hung at the U.P. Gawad Plaridel Gallery located at the College lobby (Plaridel Hall, U.P. Diliman).

Besides all the wars, we’re seeing an increase in many kinds of natural disasters like earthquakes, floods, and hurricanes; plus totally new weather patterns that never existed before such as El Nino and La Nina. Then, there are the terrible diseases, plagues, and new mystery viruses. AIDS, the worst disease in history, is killing millions of people worldwide with still no cure in sight! In Africa, entire towns have no adults because they’ve all died from AIDS, so just babies and children are left to survive alone. According to a new United Nations report, we now have the worst world hunger and famine in history. Hundreds of millions are starving with countless thousands dying every day. You know that Jesus Christ told us that all these things would happen and that they’re like labor pains just before a mother gives
birth. These terrible things are the sign that He’s getting ready to come back. Only this time, He’s coming to judge all this world’s evil and wrong. Jesus said we can’t know the exact day of His return, so it will be sudden and here before we know it. But Jesus explained it’s because He loves us so much that He’s waited as long as He can for more of us to choose to receive His gift of forgiveness and eternal life, before it’s too late! But if you know the world’s Judge personally as your friend, then His return is good news because you’re going home with Him to live forever in paradise, just as He promised. That morning of September 11, those people who went to work at the World Trade Center in New York had no idea they would never see their family again. And neither do we know if we’ll live to see tomorrow. Jesus made it clear that we all live forever—either in heaven or hell. The choice is ours. f one focus on European politics nowadays, one has to look to Greece daily. Strong words came up again from the Greek Prime Minister Tsipras who has told his party, he won’t back down in his “battle with country’s creditors. Germany’s government approved extending the aid program for the EU’s most complicated emergency case. But the Greek bailout is not just about money, says not only German TV-commentator Marcel Fürstenau. Of course, when push comes to shove, you can rely on Wolfgang Schäuble - even if the German finance minister was a cause for irritation just a week ago when he dismissed as half-baked the Greek government’s ideas on how to solve the debt crisis. By doing so, he showed Athens “who
is boss in Europe”, namely Berlin. But he also snubbed the partners in other EU capitals, who feel passed over, and rightly so. In the end, everyone gathered in Brussels and agreed on a face-saving compromise: more time for ailing Greece, but no new medicine in the form of additional billion-euro loans by the EU, ECB European Central Bank and IMF International Monetary Fund. Bearing that in mind, it was logical that in the Bundestag, Schäuble fer vently advocated an extension of the Greek bailout. People may accuse the Christian Democrat of overdoing his austerity course at home and abroad while tolerating social upheaval and dilapidated infrastructures - but Schäuble is a European by c onv i c t i on w ho i s
seriously concerned about a wonderful project that was launched as the European Coal and Steel Community in 1951. And not only he. Count me in, though I am living in the Philippines for good now. And, this is why the politician, born during World War II and with the experience of 43 years in parliament under his belt, comes up with sentences like this: “Solidarity has something to do with reliability.” If anyone else had said those words, they would have sounded like a set phrase, but from the mouth of Wolfgang Schäuble, they are nothing short of a commitment. He is convinced that the union of 28, 19 of whom share a common currency, only faces a promising future “if we Europeans stand united.”
Schäuble and his opponents in and outside of parliament don’t see eye to eye on how to go about the task. With his pensively uttered “yes” to reforming Greek aid, G e r m a n y ’s s u p r e m e treasurer defied all the populists. Propagandists can be found everywhere: among politicians, in the media and in the streets. The new socialist-led government in Greece, which depends on backing from a right wing fringe party, is democratically legitimized. We can’t forget this fact. Dubbed “Pasalamat” the “Thanksgiving and Tribute to Partners” was hosted by Dr. Rafaelita P. Pelaez, chair of the CTC Arts and Culture Committee at Liceo de Cagayan de Oro’s Rodelsa Hall. Dr. Pelaez also hosted cocktails for the honorees and guests prior to the event. Ms. Dorothy Jean B. Pabayo, CTC Chair, said the long-delayed event honored sponsors and supporters for the Higala-ay Kagay-an Festival and the first Pasko de Oro CTC

Pag-IBIG posts P30B gross income, declares P11.3B in dividends in 2014 Vice President Jejomar C. Binay meets the PagIBIG Fund stakeholders for the second time today (February 26) since he took over as Chairman of the Pag-IBIG Fund Board of Trustees in July 2010 to report on Pag-IBIG’s accomplishments in 2014. “Pag-IBIG Fund continues to be bigger, offers better services and more benefits to its members through faster and more efficient operations, all without increasing its monthly contribution which remains at P100 since the 1980s. The recordbreaking achievements in 2014 reinforce Pag-IBIG’s solid and robust financial standing that resulted from the reforms and innovations that Pag-IBIG put into action in the past four years,” said Vice President Binay. All-time high financial accomplishments In his report to PagIBIG stakeholders, Vice President Binay announced the recordbreaking financial accomplishments of Pag-IBIG in 2014. “Total assets have now reached P376.09 billion, higher by 9.12% from the 2013 level of P344.67 billion. Total assets grew at an average growth rate of 7.88% from 2011 to 2014. Gross and net income for 2014 were the highest in Pag-IBIG’s 34-year history, at P30.68 billion and P16.22 billion, respectively. These are 4.18% and 12.33% higher than the 2013 gross and net income of P29.45 billion and P14.44 billion, respectively. Average growth rates of gross and net income from 2011 to 2014 were 8.34% and 9.96%, respectively,” he reported. The Pag-IBIG Board recently declared P11.34 billion in dividends in 2014, at a dividend rate of 4.18 percent, much higher than the interest rate of 0.5% to 1% offered by banking institutions. Savers under the Modified Pag-IBIG 2 (MP2) Program earned dividends at a higher dividend rate of 4.68%. Pag-IBIG has credited a total of P80.73 billion to members’ accounts in the past decade, 58 percent of which, or P47.1 billion, was declared from 2010 to 2014. Improved housing loan portfolio “In 2014, Pag-IBIG recorded an impressive housing loan portfolio, a feat propelled by the reforms implemented by the Fund such as the creation of a department focused on marketing the housing business, the execution of strengthened underwriting guidelines,
and an efficient collection mechanism, which resulted to high loan takeouts and the best performing loans ratio (PLR) Pag-IBIG has ever attained in its 34-year history,” he added. Housing loan takeout in 2014 set a new record at P40.6 billion for 54,026 units, up by 19% and 14% from P33.96 billion for 47,562 units in 2013, respectively. PLR also went up to 87% in 2014, from 83% in 2013. This is the highest PLR attained by Pag-IBIG from a low 79% in 2008. Outsourcing of collections for housing loans in arrears led to the conversion of 47% of non-performing loans, or 189,498 accounts, into active accounts or performing loans. In 2014 alone, Pag-IBIG, through the collection agencies, was able to collect P2.7 billion.

Voluntary members increased most by 27% from 75,933 in 2013 to 96,694 in 2014. The number of overseas Filipino workers rose next by 20% from 3,337,925 in 2013 to 3,999,663 in 2014,” said Atty. Pag-IBIG collected P28.07 billion in members’ savings (MS) in 2014 alone, including P3.8 billion worth of voluntary upgraded savings, or beyond the monthly savings mandated by law, demonstrating that members trust Pag-IBIG with their hard-earned money. It will be fully launched in March 2015.” In 2014, Pag-IBIG also embarked on a fair, transparent, and competitive bidding for an insurance provider to give more benefits to its members, particularly housing loan borrowers. Being dancers of the prestigious MUST Gintong Amihan Dance Troupe, the dancers learn and understand the different cultural dances and other genres of the dances. They have the chance to perform inside the school and other public and private institutions. Dancers are given the opportunity to travel and perform in the local and national performances and competitions.
