For instance, for every P1,000 single or accumulated receipt purchase of Department Store items, customers were able to purchase a ground fan for only P499 or a stand fan for only P599.

Meanwhile, the first 100 members of Rewards Club Exclusive who purchased a minimum of P500 worth of products from the department store were able to get a P200 gift certificate.

XU to honor environmental hero at commencement exercises For its 77th commencement exercises, Xavier University has chosen to bestow a Doctor in Humanities, honoris causa, on Rev Fr Edwin Gariguez, a Roman Catholic priest who champions the causes of the indigenous peoples and the environment.

As honorary doctorate, Fr Gariguez will also deliver the keynote address at the University’s Academic Convocation on March 17.

A winner of the Goldman Environmental Prize, the world’s largest award for grassroots environmental activists, Fr Gariguez is a prominent figure against indiscriminate large scale mining in the Philippines. He is the Executive Secretary

of CBCP-NASSA, the social development, humanitarian and advocacy arm of the Catholic Church in the Philippines. He is also one of the convenors of Alyansa Tigil Mina, a countrywide coalition of organizations and individuals acting as a watchdog over violations in laws and policies related to the mining industry.

In 2009, Fr Gariguez led an 11-day hunger strike with members of Alliance Against Mining to protest the dubious issuance of an Environmental Compliance Certificate to a Norway-based mining company and to demand the government to investigate the environmental and social violations of the mining project. Consequently,

the Department of Environment and Natural Resources launched an investigation and revoked the mining firm’s permit, indefinitely putting a stop to the mine.

“The honorary doctorate is being conferred upon you in recognition of your life-long apostolate for and with the Indigenous Peoples intrinsically linked with caring for creation, our common home,” wrote Rev Fr Bobby Yap SJ, president of Xavier University, in his letter to Fr Gariguez.

“Your ministry is an inspiring response to Pope Francis’ challenge “to hear both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor.”

Further, “The vocation you have patiently and perseveringly pursued in the peripheries has truly been serving the faith that does justice and ecological stewardship.

You are a true activist and scholar for the Indigenous Peoples and the Environment,” Fr Bobby’s letter said.

About 1,800 graduates from the Graduate School, Law, Medicine, the undergraduate colleges of Arts and Sciences, Education, Business and Management, Agriculture, Engineering, Computer Studies, Nursing, and the Center for Integrated Technologies are expected to receive their diplomas during the threeday Commencement Exercises on March 17-19 at the University Gymnasium.

Tiongco is instrumental in bringing peace and order to the municipality of Damulog, Bukidnon, which for decades suffered from intermittent guerilla fighting among the military, militia groups and rebels.

He ran for mayor in 2007 outlining his campaign on the platform of peace and a demilitarized municipality to solve poverty. When he won, one of the first things he did was to embark on a peace journey from the town proper to Sitio Agong, the site of the heaviest fighting.

Tiongco ran again for mayor and won in 2010. He got re-elected for a third and final term in 2013. Between those years, he became a fellow of the Mindanao Bridging Leaders Program of the Asian Institute of Management, which helped him expand his program on peace and development to include hero/PAGE 7

Whenever I watch my favorite cooking shows like Ina Garten’s The Barefoot Contessa at Food Network, her beautiful herb garden inspires me to make my own.

I had been planning to start doing it for quite some time now but I never had the time to do it.

Here are some of what I bought: Chocolate Mint - you can add this to your cakes, cookies, ice cream, drinks and hot tea.

Peppermint - you can add this to your hot tea or make your own essential oil.

It’s good for digestion and headache too.

Rosemary - tastes good with chicken drizzled with olive oil, salt and pepper then put into your Turbo Roaster and you’re good to go. Easy recipes are always the best!

Stevia - natural sweetener. It can sweeten food and beverages. It’s like honey.

Dill - best when cooking fish like salmon and also good for dips.

Parsley - I combine chopped parsley with my baked vegetables like squash or carrots together with a drizzle of olive oil, salt and

pepper.

Lettuce and Romaine - you can make a simple salad. Just add cucumber, tomatoes, red bell pepper, carrots, mozzarella or whatever you want. Season with salt and pepper.

Drizzle with olive oil and a little balsamic vinegar.

Or, you could simply use a store-bought salad dressing.

Basil - it’s the most loved herb in the culinary industry. A simple recipe that’s famous in Italy: tomato slices topped with mozzarella cheese, basil, drizzle with olive oil, season with salt and pepper.

Healthy and delicious!

It’s nice to have healthy herbs at your backyard that you could use for cooking.

Taking care of them helps you unwind, relieves stress because it relaxes the soul and they do smell so good.

CEB launches maiden flight to Guam, USA The Philippines' leading carrier, Cebu Pacific (PSE: CEB), launched four times weekly flights between Manila and Guam, its first US destination, today.

CEB is the only low-cost carrier f lying directly between the Philippines and Guam.

Arriving earlier than expected for a courtesy call on Governor Rodolfo del Rosario, Bongbong was taken to a women’s gathering at the RDR Gym beside the provincial capitol for an impromptu appearance. The vice-presidential candidate was mobbed by wildly cheering women.

That was just one of many high points during Bongbong Marcos’ “Unity Caravan” through western and southern

The Department of Energy (DOE) steps up initiatives towards energy efficiency and conservation through finalizing the Philippine Energy Standards and Labeling Program (PESLP), which will be a key contribution to the attainment of the country’s aspirational target to reduce energy intensity by 45% by 2035.

"We’re almost done in updating the Philippine Energy Standards and Labeling Program, which would cover a wider range of appliances and lighting systems, and to include even light duty motor vehicles,” said OIC-Assistant Secretary Patrick T. Aquino. He added that comments and suggestions raised during the public consultations held in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao last February were given substantial weight in the finalization of the PESLP to make the policy more responsive to the needs of all stakeholders.

The PESLP initially covers room airconditioners, split-type aircons, refrigerators with 5-8 cubic feet storage capacity, and three types of fluorescent lamp (CFL, linear and circular) and electronic ballasts.

This initiative is in line with the DOE’s “energy efficiency and conservation (EE&C)”

program, as a major aspect in cutting down the country’s carbon emissions.

Meanwhile, as a staunch advocate of EE&C, the DOE encourages the consuming public to participate in the observance of #EarthHour spearheaded by the World Wildlife Fund-Philippines by turning off lights as well as electrical appliances for an hour on March 19 at 8:30 p.m.

Relatedly, the DOE revives its #DOEhugot online campaign to create greater awareness about EE&C. This online campaign basically throws emotionally appealing hugot lines which are drawn from experiences, song lyrics and movie scripts in which electric appliances and lighting systems were personified comically implying judicious and efficient use of energy.

Certified green builder Italpinas Development Corp. (IDC) will shortly launch a new condominium development, where buyers will not only own a topnotch home, but also enjoy the benefits of an innovative solarpower system.

IDC's Primavera City in Cagayan de Oro City is designed with an onsite solar power plant component that should produce around 1.4 megawatt (MW) of power.

IDC President Jose "Jojo" D. Leviste III said that by investing in an economically sized solar-power system, the residents of Primavera City will enjoy a lowered cost of living as the system contributes solar power to the building’s various functions.

The building’s lessened dependence on expensive power from the grid makes it an innovation not just in aesthetics and design, but also in the economics of condominium living, he noted.

IDC Chairman and COO Romolo Valentino Nati, an Italian architect, said Primavera City’s solar plant component is consistent with the company’s thrust of building only sustainable and ecologically sound condominium buildings.

“The company’s unique marketing proposition is to offer distinctive energy efficient, passive and active eco friendly green building concept with beautiful contemporary Italian- Filipino design, while continuously improving the quality and accessibility of its residential and commercial properties to satisfy the housing and business needs of the expanding Philippine population, and the desire of overseas Filipino workers, balikbayans and expats to secure properties in new emerging cities in the country, as well as the increasing sophistication of the market and its demand for style and comfort,” Nati emphasized.

Primavera City’s

value proposition, he added, revolves around the unique integration of renewable energy with real-estate development. “Once the capacity to implement the Solar PV system for condominiums is refined, the power generated from solar energy may spin off to another business ventures which targets other residential,

office and commercial buildings.”

The publicly listed IDC made its mark in the real-estate industry as the first Philippine company certified by the International Finance Corp. (IFC) World Bank Group’s “Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies” (EDGE) program for its flagship project also in

Cagayan de Oro City, the Primavera Residences.

It recently announced that the launch of Phase 1 of Primavera City has been set in the second quarter of the year. It involves the construction of two towers of integrated multifunctional buildings (commercial, office, residential) project with 11 floors
