Wedding of the Year 2015:

R

elatives a n d friends of Christian and Vianncy (nee Ramos) Unabia who knew the story that led to their wedding last 31 July 2015 couldn’t help but tear up when the groom’s mom started her talk during the reception which followed at the Xavier Sports and Country Club with the greeting, “Magandang Buhay!” Avid fans of Kapamilya telenovelas know those words from the hit ABSCBN Prime Time series

“Dream Dad” by “Be Careful With My Heart” director Jeffrey Jeturian. The series focused on a young orphaned girl, portrayed by child actress Jana Agoncillo, who was searching for a loving family, and comes across Baste --a bachelor president of a company who is trying to move on from a heartbreak. The parallels to the couple’s real life romance are astounding, to say the least, and Mrs. Erlinda (Gingging to friends) couldn’t have chosen a

cage the rage

T

hink A minute.A newspaper reported about a man who had killed his best friend. Later the police asked the man what had happened. He answered: “My friend and I began talking peacefully about politics till we disagreed and argued. I killed him when I ran out of words.” A true story! Many of us lose control of our anger over the smallest things. When we think someone treated us rudely or talked to us without respect, or in a way we just don’t like. Or if another driver on the road cuts in front of us and offends us.watch out! They call it “road rage,” which many people now struggle with. However, if we can understand the real cause of our anger, we can begin to control it. Sometimes we get angry because we have unresolved anger from the past. We’re still angry about how somebody wronged or hurt us months or even years ago. Maybe it was a family member, friend, neighbor, or coworker. We still have not forgiven that person and let go of our anger. So our anger

is like a time-bomb inside us, ready to explode at the smallest offense, causing real hurt and damage to others, including ourselves. That’s why it’s so important for us to forgive that person and get over it! In fact, it’s the only way we’ll get free to get on with healthy, happy living. Other times we react in anger to little things just because we’re very tired and stressed. Like the mother who hardly slept the night before and worked hard all day. So when her little boy accidentally spills his drink she should remember that she’s just tired. Then she won’t lose control and punish her child for a simple mistake. Remember, we all make mistakes. So why not ask Jesus to forgive you for letting your anger control you? Today, ask Him to take control of your heart so you can start learning to master and control your anger. If you don’t start today, you just might lose control and say or do something you’ll regret the rest of your life. Just Think a Minute.

got another invitation on my desk. For the sake of our following generations - I wouldn’t say NO to it. I am a dying-hard environmentalist since many years. I admire people, who are really taking care of our Mother Nature. I am talking about people, who didn’t only blow empty words into our sky.Let’s follow deeds! On the other hand, conferences such as the one in Berlin on March 26 an 27, 2015 are badly needed and important. The Federal Government and the German Renewable Energy Federation (BEE) together with its

sectoral associations will be holding the “Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue 2015”. Indeed, the first one and a half decade of the 21st century have shown that our globe faces abundance of challenges and new opportunities. International networking and innovation are enabling people in more and more regions of the world to have a stake in industrial growth. Meanwhile climate change and the scarcity of resources make it unmistakably clear that new paths must be found to cover

the growing demand of energy, and to do so in a sustainable way. The German Federal Government is initiating an international dialogue to tackle these challenges. Together with energy policy experts, industry representatives and civil society actors from over all the world, one can only hope and pray to develop solutions towards an international energy transition. Joining this conference will be, among many others, German Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter

Steinmeier as well as German Federal Minister of Economic Affairs and Energy Sigmar Gabriel and Maros Sefcovic, Vice President “Energy Union” European Commission as well as Foreign Minister Denmark Martin Lidegaard. To be discussed shall be many topics about “New Energy Policy - a global challenge for the 21st century”. As I said earlier here: I pray for actual deeds - for a real switch to future in the world and especially for ThirdWorld-Countries like the disaster prone Philippines.

Globe Telecom sets global trend for internet adoption thru Free Facebook campaigns Globe Telecom set a global trend to promote internet adoption through the Free Facebook campaigns it has implemented over the past two years, in support of the objective of internet. org, a Facebook-led initiative to provide data connectivity to two-thirds of global population. Following Globe Telecom’s successful Free Facebook campaign, which encouraged internet adoption among Filipinos, other telco providers are following the initiative of promoting and increasing data connectivity among mobile customers. Globe generated a data customer growth of 110% over the telco’s two Free Facebook campaigns, indicative that the campaign has been an effective tool in enhancing internet adoption in the country, Daniel Horan, Globe Senior Advisor for Consumer Business Group, said. “Our partnership with Facebook enabled more Filipinos to gain internet

connectivity, in line wi th the vision of internet. org to allow more and more people to have free access to internet services. Globe Telecom is extremely honored to be a pioneering force in improving internet adoption, an example that is now being followed by other telcos locally and globally,” Horan said. As corporate partnerships go, few are probably more relevant in our country today than the ongoing relationship between Facebook and Globe Telecom. Together, these two giants introduced the Philippines to “Free Facebook” back in 2013. As evidenced by a recent study, the campaign significantly changed the landscape of the mobile Internet space in the entire country, Horan said. A recent whitepaper published by Globe and Facebook outlined how Globe’s efforts and massive investments to scale the necessary infrastructure for free/PAGE 11

ALS way of helping people live an inspiring life By Wendy O. Egoy

“Ind ay” wou ld b e t he most obvious source of inspirat ion for t he learners in Department of Education-Alternative Learning System (DepEdALS). She was a product of ALS and often spoke of how the knowledge and skills she learned there guided her in her decisions. And these lessons on critical thought and reflection gave her strength throughout the trials of her career to survive the rigid demands of being a cosmetologist. Like thousands of students in her younger years, she knew she wanted to be a teacher. But she never had a chance of e ven complet ing hig h school as her parents could not afford to send her to school due to various problems and financial constraints. Eventually, she was hopeless in fulfilling that dream. She never considered ALS as a serious option

but decided to take t he Accredit ation and Equivalency (A&E) exam as a practice test. Fortunately, the test results showed that she possessed competencies equivalent to that of which she could take career course such as cosmetology. Today, whenever you ask “Inday” how she earns P2,000 to P4,000 weekly by providing haircutting, manicure and pedicure ser vices, foot spa, and make-up ser vices to community clients, she would simply say, “Just get enrolled in ALS and get to grips with your beauty care instruments.” Informal skills Training Programs The Malaybalay City ALS Learning Center, in partnership with local government units and other stakeholders, conducted various skills trainings s u c h a s d re s s m a k i n g , flower arrangement, table-

skir t ing, t able napkin folding , t able-s ett ing , i n c lu d i n g m o t orc y c l e driving, among others. There were also skills trainings on cosmetology, body massage therapy and reflexology. The activity aims to provide them livelihood skills to improve their lives and gain additional income for their families— especially those in need of e du c at i on s e r v i c e s like laborers, street folks, victims of armed conflicts, inmates, probationers, solo parents, differently-abled, c are g i ve rs , an d ot h e r deprived, depressed and underserved groups, the DepEd said. Ta p p i n g t h e y o u t h’s Bayanihan spirit This is a continuing fundraising movement dubbed “Piso-piso para sa batang gapanarbaho” (a peso for a working student) initiated by San Isidro College to support ALS students’ needs in school supplies and materials.

L e a r n i ng a n d s k i l l s training behind bars “Dodong” is a 26 yearold inmate of Malaybalay City Jail who is now an A L S e n r o l l e e . Un d e r the ALS curriculum, he is learning through interactive modules and learning sessions at an agreed schedule between them (the inmates), jail m a n a g e m e nt a n d t h e learning facilitator. The basic curriculum of ALS include communication skills, c r it i c a l t h i n k i n g a n d problem solving, sustainable use of resources/productivity, self-development, community development, and expanding one’s world vision. “I’ve never enjoyed life as much as I do right now. And all the time I’m in here, I will be learning more and working towards my personal dream,” he said. ALS serves as part of the inmates’ rehabilitation and makes them better

prepared for reintegration into the mainstream of society. For Dodong, ALS has changed his outlook in life. “If before, I ignored education, now, I see it as a light that will brighten my path as I start a new life once I shall have served my sentence and rejoin the community,” he said. Interested L earners: Where to go for ALS? There are several offices you can contact if you’re interested in becoming a learner to volunteer for ALS programs. You can either visit the nearest district or division office of DepEd, where they can give you a full account of ALS programs, or you can go to DepEd schools and barangay and municipal of f i c e s t o g e t prop e r information on how to join the program. Life-changing ALS programs Research showed that most Filipinos are not too

familiar with Alternative Learning System or ALS. Pe o p l e h a v e a v a g u e perception of what it is, or have no idea that these kinds of learning programs even exist or that such an idea has ever been established by DepEd. Chances are even if they have heard about it in the past, the news that ALS exists has not delivered the hope or the enlightenment it should bring. He n c e , w ord on it should spread like wildfire because definitely, it is life-changing. The ALS—as defined by DepEd-BALS—is an a lte r nat ive w ay of attaining basic education for elementary and high s cho ol c omp ar abl e to formal education. It is a free education program implemented by the DepEd under the Bure au of Alter nat ive Learning System, which benefits those who cannot afford formal schooling. (Wendy O. Egoy/DepEd-ALS/ RLRB, PIA 10-Bukidnon)

Where do broken phones go? Art for communities By Jesse Pizarro Boga of MindaNews

It’s time to rethink our mobile phone choices. Again. This time, it’s not going to be about which brand or model to buy. It’s going to be about how to deal with the old phones that we have forgotten after we got a brand new one. Where do old mobile phones go, really? And where are we headed in terms of dealing with the growing amount of e-waste largely driven by the fastpaced production of mobile technology? Planned what? There is a term used to refer to product design that doesn’t sit well with the idea of sustainability. It’s planned obsolescence. Wikipedia defines this as a “policy of planning or designing a product with an artificially limited useful life, so it will become obsolete, that is, unfashionable or no longer functional after a certain period of time.” In Dictionary.com, it’s “a method of stimulating consumer demand by designing products that wear out or become outmoded after limited use.” According to The Economist, it’s “a business strategy in which the obsolescence (the process of becoming obsolete) of a product is planned and built into it from its conception.

This is done so that in future the consumer feels a need to purchase new products and services that the manufacturer brings out as replacements for the old ones.” However seemingly wordy these definitions may be, they all point to one thing: nothing we purchase lasts that long anymore. Companies release into the market products with relatively short shelf lives, and consumers are left with little control over these things that they purchase in the long run. Products that are designed to fail in the long run include ink cartridges, lightbulbs, and even clothes! But let’s stick to our use of smartphones as a simple example. With b r a n d s a n d manufacturers coming up with new models annually (wasn’t it just yesterday when Apple announced the iPhone 5?), it’s hard not to consider getting a new one— especially when the ones that we currently own are not as durable anymore compared to the feature phones we had during the early 2000s (remember Nokia 3310 and its successors?). We o f t e n p a y t h e price (often literally) for extravagant, computer-like features in smartphones. We exchange the convenience of

having a smartphone with “super fast processor, super amazing camera, super lots of apps, and super everything” features for batteries that don’t last more than a day with 3G and WiFi turned on; the same batteries, even with rechargeable capacities become disposable when their charge cycles drop to unusable states. Worse, having them replaced may burn a hole in our pockets (especially if you use an iPhone that has a battery sealed and locked in the unit; only technicians can replace it for you for an exorbitant fee). We also deal with broken displays. We put on and throw away phone casings like underwear. We use plastic accessories that come and go. And before we know it, the current phone that we have is now obsolete, has limited tech support from the company that produced it, and is now in the dumps. Cough, cough. BlackBerry. Cough, cough. iFrail The business model behind our frail mobile phones persuades us to get brand new ones from time to time. Companies appear to deliberately limit the lifespan of devices to get consumers to get new ones every so often. This fast smartphone cycle ripples and creates a problem with electronic

waste (e-waste). According to Greenpeace, extremely large volumes of e-waste in the world end up in some places in Africa, India, and China. But this doesn’t mean that our community is excluded in the list. Aside from the piling waste, poisonous substances from these e-waste pose a threat to our health. Causes International lists hazardous substances that come from computers and smartphones: lead (in the solder), mercury (in switches and relays), and brominated flame-retardants. These can build up in our bodies and in the environment. Mounting invisibly In an Interaksyon.com report, Lira DalanginFernandez wrote that the government, the LGU responsible for e-waste (the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Environmental Management Bureau, DENR-EMB), and NGOs have no record of the volume of e-waste in the country. Worse, these e-waste are “generated locally or dumped here from other countries through trade agreements.” In the same article, Richard Gutierrez, executive director of BAN Toxics said that “the difficulty is always getting the hard data on the volume of how much is getting into the Philippines. The best indicator is to get phones/PAGE 11

agbantog VDAY is a group of Kagayanons who share the same advocacy: seeing an end to violence against women, children, and LGBT members. They are a group of women – and men – who believe and understand the power they have in inspiring and encouraging others to heed the call and take action against the (physically and emotionally) painful battle against violence. They are students, artists, parents, professionals, and ordinary Kagay-anons who believe that they can use their talents and skills in reaching out to people. Pagbatog VDAY’s goal is to stage performances and activities that tell of the stories and experiences of women, men, children, and LGBT members, stories that tell us that violence is still very much around us, and stories that tell

data usage (e.g., its massive 3G rollout), along with its drive to increase smartphone penetration, set the stage for a breakthrough in Internet penetration in the country. This breakthrough would come in the form of the “Free Facebook” campaign, which was launched in October 2013 for the first phase and again in October 2014 for the second phase. The results of the campaign clearly demonstrate the longterm impact of the partnership. Over the first phase of the program, the number of data users on Globe’s network doubled, and Globe prepaid subscribers active on mobile data grew from 14% to 25%. The partnership also had an enduring effect that was sustained even after the campaign ended. After the first phase, Globe was able to continue acquiring twice the number of new mobile data users versus prior levels, even when access to Facebook was no longer free. As a result, the Free Facebook campaign helped drive an increase of 6 million Filipinos actively using mobile internet during the period. “The partnership does not end there. Globe and Facebook will be launching new and exciting offers to make mobile internet further accessible via Internet.org, aiming to make more subscribers connected by providing

a safe environment for browsing without incurring unexpected charges. More details to be released very soon.” Horan said.

Acting General Manager for GrabTaxi Natasha Bautista also shared, “We take care of our dedicated GrabTaxi partner drivers in the same way that we take care of our valued passengers. With this partnership with Globe and GCash, we are assured that we can better provide more innovative solutions that will benefit our GrabTaxi drivers.” Apart from the GCash GrabTaxi card registration and card distribution, cab drivers also enjoyed free haircut, free massage, medical and dental check-up, as well entertainment

Aside from actively engaging with community projects like this, we can also be in the know of the upcoming projects by smartphone manufacturers and voice our concerns on e-waste and sustainability. Google’s modular smartphone, currently being developed as Project Ara, also poses a potential solution to smartphone sustainability. This kind of smartphone will allow users to customize their phone and minimizing e-waste. Google is closely working with Dave Hakkens, a designer in the Netherlands who is behind the Phonebloks community, an independent organization with the purpose of encouraging the development and production of products that produce less electronic waste.
