What I’m Hooked With These Days

I love watching movies, reality shows and tv shows on my free time. It’s my relaxation, I should say. It makes me really happy watching all kinds of movies be it comedy, romance, biography, cooking shows, lifestyle shows, drama, animations and so on. I am so thankful that I discovered Netflix and iflix. To those of you who don’t know what it’s all about… Netflix and iflix are both subscription services for online streaming your favorite shows on your phone, tablet, laptop, desktop and/or smart tv. What I love with their services is that I can watch movies and tv shows anytime

and anywhere. iflix is currently only available in The Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand but they are planning to expand to other Southeast Asian markets particularly Vietnam and Indonesia. What I love with iflix is that they have some local tv shows and movies to choose from. Yes, if you love those Tagalog teleseryes then you will love iflix. Netflix has 74 million subscribers as of 2016 and they serve a worldwide audience except China, Crimea, North Korea and Syria. I love them both so I subscribed to both of them for more selections.

My bedroom has a huge tv so I love watching here more than on my iPhone or laptop. My son, Dominic, uses a Mac Mini so I was like, …I also want that! It sure looks like he’s having fun with it. So, my husband, Elmer, and I decided to buy one for our own use so we could directly watch our favorite shows on tv. It’s so much better than the laptop. Last weekend, we bought a Mac Mini at Digital Hub Limketkai Mall. It’s so worth it because it made my watching more fun! To know more about this product visit my website for the specs. I’ve been hooked! I find myself always looking forward to watching! I’m like a kid

who’s excited to go home to watch their favorite tv shows. My top picks for the tv shows are, HOUSE OF CARDS, which is an original Netflix series featuring Kevin Spacey as US President and Robin Wright as US First Lady and my all time favorite comedy tv series, FRIENDS. Finally, I can watch all the seasons anytime I want. So, every Sunday, our family bonding is to watch at least 6 episodes of this show. We love comedy tv shows! For the movies, my recently watched are Gone with the Wind, Casablanca and The Godfather among others. There are also a lot of both old and new movies to

choose from. Your kids would love it too because their favorite shows are just clicks away. I remember that I used to be teased by people I know that I’m so boring because I don’t go out and party. If they find my watching my favorite movies and tv shows boring, then so be it. It gives me so much happiness, so I don’t really mind. Whatever makes you happy, do it. To my readers who love watching, you might as well try them too. They both give one month free trial. Enjoy! "Do more of what makes you happy." -M

Nuclear energy booming in Asia Yes, in my opinion, it’s indeed amazing and is actually taking my breath away. Five years after the Fukushima nuclear disaster, India and China have still embraced nuclear power. Other countries in the region also want to build more plants - even in high-risk areas prone to earthquakes and tsunamis.GRABE. When Sun Qin talks about the future of nuclear power, his eyes light-up. In China alone, there are 31 nuclear power plants and another 24 are under construction, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency. Now, the president of the China’s National Nuclear Corporation wants (CNNC) wants to build 30 additional nuclear power stations - not only in China, but also in the neighboring states along the so-called “New Silk Road.” CNNC has already exported six reactors abroad, but the Chinese want to expand further. “We face very strong competition in the international nuclear

market,” says Sun Qin, adding that “countries like Russia, South Korea, Japan and the United States are all exploring the global nuclear market aggressively.” Five years after the Fukushima nuclear disaster, and thirty years after Chernobyl, the nuclear industry, in particular in China, is on the upswing. China: on track to becoming number 1? Following the Fukushima disaster, China’s government initially suspended the construction of additional nuclear power plants. Instead, comprehensive security policies were adopted. But in the autumn of 2012, Beijing lifted the moratorium on future development - and since then, has pursued a more ambitious nuclear program. What China’s nuclear industry wants to expand - also internationally -is making me breathless. China needs to restructure its massive energy sector. Currently, the country produces some two-thirds of

its total energy from outdated coal power plants. The Chinese people complain of air pollution and other environmental damage, which is why the government in Beijing will shut down about 1,000 coal plants by the end of this year. Nuclear power, on the other hand, is considered a relatively “clean” alternative to coal. In daily congressional meetings, the Communist Party has been discussing plans for a massive expansion of nuclear energy. By 2030, a total of 110 nuclear power plants will be in operation. With this, China would overtake the US as the country with the most nuclear power plants connected to the grid. German Greenpeace nuclear expert Heinz Smital views the speed at which the reactors are being developed as problematic: “The Chinese safety authorities do not have the capacity to examine the buildings properly,” said Smital. “They will likely wave things through, rubber-

stamp everything and not mess with the state-run construction consortium. There is a big security risk.” Indeed, there is! Who on earth seems to care? India’s economy grows at a rate of about six percent per annum. But its ailing energy infrastructure inhibits economic development. Large areas of the country suffer from regular blackouts and obsolete infrastructure. Like China, India’s renewable energy sector needs to be massively expanded. But the country’s political elite are convinced that India must exhaust all possibilities of electricity. Therefore, Delhi is planning a far-reaching doring/PAGE 7

Sikat ka Higala I was invited by the Commanding General of the 4th ID MG Oscar T. Lactao to cover the CMRFD or the Conflict Manageable and Ready for further Development at Tandag,Surigao de Sur last March 8.It was a long 9 hour drive and had the privilege of meeting the dignitaries of the province along with the Governor of the province Gov. Johnny Pimentel. The efforts of the military suppressing insurgency has done a lot of impact to the entire region. The presence of its 4,000 soldiers had made the NPA to retract its offense thus resulting

to 63 surrenderee and 43 arms surrendered and as far as the statistics is concerned there are only about 150 presence of NPA in the area as of today. The fast ,agreessive and advancing force of the military has gained a momentum that being a province that is almost insurgency free is an ideal example that joint efforts of the military and the PNP with good efforts of the governor has attained Surigao de Sur CMFRD.In this case we are commending the efforts of the commanding general and his constituents and of course our brave soldiers

who has done a non stop operation to accomplish the mission.I am witness of the military operation its commitment to suppress the insurgency i have been documenting these efforts as well as the programs implemented through the bayanihan project of the AFP.Their continuous acts as a subtle peacemaker has caught my attention the sincerity to invite the civilians to come and submit its cooperation to the military. It was not an easy task to accomplish a mission that the whole Surigao del Sur will be insurgent free but with a devious strategy they are about to make this mission very possible.I have sat down and with the Commander of the 402nd Brigade Col Isidro L. Purisima and have deliberated how they have come up with a plan to further the presence and will continue to submerge

until the declaration of insurgent free province will be a reality.I also have interviewed the PNP Provincial Director,PPO-SDS PSSupt Romaldo G Bayting that when he was installed to be the commander he have already outlined a 2 year plan to coordinate with local government to take

heed to its operation of security specially in its preparedness level in the upcoming Election. The Governor have commended both the PNP and AFP for doing a job well done and the confidence that soon Surigao del Sur will be a leader Province to obtain the insurgence to a big halt.I would like to

thank the invitation of Captain Patrick Martinez of DPAO through our escort Sgt. Ian Vina and TSG. Dominador Oran Jr. of the 4th ID and the Host at ATF of Bancasi Butuan City and to the whole AFP and PNP you need a well deserve praise and commendation. Sikat Kayo Mga Higala.

Smart, Voyager, and Rappler make rescue and relief assistance a text away Rescue, search, or relief assistance during disasters can now be obtained by just sending a simple text message. This is made possible by the partnership forged by Smart Communications (Smart), Voyager Innovations, and Rappler for Project Agos, an initiative that uses mobile and web technologies, plus social media, to mobilize different sectors of society and ordinary citizens during emergencies and disasters. “Smart supports Project Agos via our SMS service as part of our commitment to improving the efficiency of emergency communications in the country,” said Smart Public Affairs Group Head Ramon R. Isberto. “The SMS service is a fast and convenient way for Filipinos to call for help,”

Isberto added. “It is an honor for us to be part of Agos, developing the mission critical SMS components of the platform. We shall now wield our mobile devices to aid victims and those in the frontline in times of calamities. Voyager, our innovations hub, shall continue to explore ways to harness the new digital technologies that must come to our aid during disasters,” shared Chito Bustamante, Head of Chikka, now under the wings of Voyager Innovations, the digital unit of PLDT – Smart. To avail of the service, which is available for Smart, TNT, and Sun subscribers, users would only have to send information using any of the following keywords to 2929: RESCUEPH to report rescue assistance;

RELIEFPH to request for relief; FINDPH to report missing persons; FLOODPH to report flooded areas; MOVEPH to volunteer for disaster response; and SAFENOW to report that survivors are safe. The first three messages sent are free while succeeding texts will be charged P2.50. Crowd-sourced information gathered via Project Agos SMS service is validated by the Rappler team and volunteers. Reports that need action are then passed on to relevant government agencies. Rappler’s Project Agos and Ateneo’s eBayanihan are about to merge into one platform, which will be known as Agos, powered by eBayanihan. Disaster communications summit Smart launched the

Agos SMS service in Baguio last March 3 as part of the Cordillera and Autonomous Region (CAR) disaster communications summit, the 3rdleg of the regional meetings being organized by the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) and supported by Smart. Dubbed as ICT Bayanihan, these regional meetings attended by private and public agencies aim to establish disaster communication protocols and institutionalize rapid emergency telecommunication teams (RETT) to lead immediate response and support when there are disasters. CAR is the first region in Luzon to hold the disaster communications summit. The first two conferences, which were both supported by Smart as well, were held last year

in Cebu and Cagayan de Oro for Regions 7 and 10, respectively. Apart from coorganizing the regional communication summits, Smart also developed the Batingaw app for OCD-NDRRMC. The Batingaw mobile app, which can be downloaded for free at Google Play Store and Apple App Store, is a handy resource and reporting tool for nationwide disaster management. An active partner for disaster communications, Smart has also been consistent in providing immediate libreng tawag services to areas affected by disasters. Furthermore, Smart offers a web-based disaster communications solution called Smart Infocast, which has been proven effective in disseminating weather forecasts and warnings.

All these efforts, services, and innovations to help improve communications for humanitarian emergencies are part of Smart’s commitment to the GSMA Humanitarian Connectivity Charter. Smart as an organization has embraced preparedness, and has been aggressively promoting the culture of preparedness to its partner organizations under its #SafePH program. More than just providing communications as relief during disasters, Smart has also taken an active role in strengthening the capacity of highrisk communities to prepare for, manage, and recover from the impact of disasters. expansion of nuclear power. Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants to build dozens of new reactors in the next 15 years. The technical know-how is sourced internationally. Over the past decade, India has reached civil nuclear agreements with the United States, Canada, France and Russia. 21 nuclear power plants are already in operation. Two of the plants are in Kudankulam and Kalpakkam, located on the southeast coast of the country – areas prone to tsunamis. In December 2006, a tsunami hit Kalpakkam causing extensive damage, but not to the nuclear power plant, according to its operator.

Let’s take a look to Pakistan: Do you remember several reactors in floodprone areas? India’s neighbor, Pakistan, is also struggling with blackouts and outdated infrastructure. The country currently operates three small reactors, with the nuclear plant west of Karachi located in a flood-prone area - being one of the oldest in the world. The remaining two reactors are situated in an earthquake-prone area some 300 kilometers (186.4 miles) south of the capital Islamabad. The government is planning to build two other reactors in the same area. According to Pakistan’s Atomic Energy Commission, Islamabad wants to build a total of seven new reactors by 2030 - with assistance from China. Although South Korea is about the size of the former German Democratic Republic (GDR), the country boasts 25 active nuclear plants. Three additional ones are under construction, while two others are set to be completed by 2029. South Koreans are becoming increasingly skeptical about nuclear energy - and not just because of the 2011 Fukushima disaster. In 2012 and 2013, a scandal related to the use of fake safety certificates rocked the country’s nuclear industry lobby. State-owned (KHNP)

had thousands of small components featuring falsified certificates fitted into the country’s nuclear plants. As it turns out, large amounts of bribe money changed hands between KHNP employees, construction firms and politicians. This led not only to Korean media speaking of a “nuclear mafia,” but also to a massive drop in the approval ratings for nuclear energy - from 70 percent before the Fukushima disaster to 35 percent. In spite of this, Seoul is sticking to its plans to expand the use of nuclear power in the East Asian country. In Southeast Asia, the production of nuclear energy is a hotly debated issue. For instance, while Vietnam wants Russian assistance to build eight nuclear plants, Hanoi has yet to make a final decision. Thailand is planning to build five reactors, whereas Malaysia and the Philippines each want a nuclear reactor to go online. Despite protests, the South Korean government wants to expland the use

7

of nuclear energy However, it’s unclear whether such plans will ever see the light of day. “It will be very difficult to find people willing to invest billions of dollars in this area, especially given the likelihood of another accident taking place in another part of the world,” said Greenpeace nuclear expert Smital. “The costs related to the production of nuclear energy are only likely to increase, whereas renewable energy is becoming increasingly affordable. This is why the free market can only barely manage to finance nuclear plants at the moment,” Smital added. Nuclear energy is keep on booming in Asia.
