L SALVADOR City in Misamis Oriental will be celebrating its 6th Charter Day this June 27 with a Mass early in the morning at 7:00 a.m. and a State of the City Address afterwards to be delivered by Mayor Edgar Lignes.

According to city tourism officer Jeen Clarin-Lopez, there will also be a Kasalan ng Bayan the day before on June 27 to be officiated

by Lignes. There will be 188 couples who are expected to tie the knot.

The Charter Day activities were also preceded with the summer-long Dalit sa

Barrio where all the 14 barangays in the city were afforded with free basic services like medical, circumcision, dental, legal and veterinary as well as distribution of school kits and seedlings. There was also free gupit and massage for the males and a feeding program

The doting parents left no stone unturned to make sure that the coming out party would be an affair to remember.

According to Lapasan Task Force on Youth Development vice-president Keith SemaĂąa, the interns were divided into three batches performing tasks for ten straight days in exchange for P2,500 in wages.

The summer interns were divided into the following tasks: assisting the barangay unit heads, community service, publication team, social media team, data colectors/analyst, general community cleaning/clean up drive, tutorial, solid

waste management IEC, Hapsay Canal deployment and gardening.

Outstanding interns from each department whose ages ranged from 15 to 25 were handed out recognitions by the Lapasan Task Force on Youth Development.

And because it’s a thanksgiving fellowship for the interns in Lapasan, they were all treated with a cocktail pica-pica party early in the afternoon with intermission from various rock bands providing backdrop.

During the program proper, there were also several intermission numbers from the youth in barangay Lapasan followed by a

fashion show featuring the works of designer Ruvil Neri capped with a rave party after.

Lapasan barangay chair Omar Labuntog likewise gave a pep talk, saying that the youth must not be restricted and must be given the chance to formulate policies on how to hone themselves as responsible citizens in the barangays.

At the same time, Labuntog assured his full support for the youth in barangay Lapasan and even provided them guidance on how to go about their actions by deploying a youth coordinator to oversee them in the person of Marisa Miranda.

Carnegie Mellon University Australia, Xavier Ateneo tie up for exchange programs

avier University - Ateneo de Cagayan and Carnegie Mellon University in Australia signed a memorandum of understanding on promoting educational collaboration and cultural understanding through the establishment of

exchange programs.

The MOU signing transpired on May 15 at the office of XU president Fr. Roberto C. Yap SJ with CMUAustralia executive director Dr. Emil P. Bolongaita, in the presence of the XU’s Office of International Networking and Cooperation (OICN)

director Elisabeth Enerio and vice-president for academic affairs Fr. Rene Tacastacas SJ. The purpose of the said MOU is to facilitate the exchange of students, scholars, and educational resources between the two universities.

Five programs will be formed under this mutual understanding:

(1) Academic Staff Program, (2) Joint Research Program, (3) Cultural Exchange Program, (4) Student Program, and (5) Short Courses Program.

For the Academic Staff Program, each university, by agreement, will accept faculty members and researchers from the other. Suitable

Both schools aim to seek opportunities to cooperate in research under the Joint Research Program. The details of specific research proposals will be determined by the agreement of faculties of XU and Carnegie Mellon.

Under the Cultural Exchange Program, the home university will send a number of participants to conferences, workshops, symposia, and short visits to the

other school. Joint educational programs and joint curriculum development are also encouraged.

The Student Exchange Program will include, but not limited to, short-term faculty-level programs, courses, library access, and academic assistance for students. However, the details will be laid out in a separate agreement.

This is how protesters gathered outside the White House yesterday. Indeed, the world is crying and not laughing.

What was agreed in Paris? Climate change, or global warming, refers to the damaging effect of gases, or emissions, released from industry and agriculture on the atmosphere.

The Paris accord is meant to limit the global rise in temperature attributed to emissions. Countries agreed to: Keep global temperatures “well below” the level of 2 C (3.6 F) above pre-industrial times and “endeavor to limit” them even more, to 1.5 C. Limit the amount of greenhouse gases emitted by human activity to the same levels that trees, soil and oceans can absorb naturally, beginning at some point between 2050 and 2100.

Review each country’s contribution to cutting emissions every five years so they scale up to the challenge Enable rich countries to help poorer nations by providing “climate finance” to adapt to climate change and switch to renewable energy. But - without the U.S.!

There has been widespread international condemnation of President Trump’s announcement that the US is withdrawing from the 2015 Paris climate agreement.

UN chief Antonio Guterres’s spokesman called it “a major disappointment” while the European Union said it was “a sad day for the world”. However, senior Republicans and the US coal industry backed the move.

Mr. Trump said the accord “punished” the US and would cost millions of American jobs. In an address at the White House, he said he was prepared to negotiate a new agreement or re-enter the accord on improved terms.

“I was elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris,” he said.

Only Syria and Nicaragua did not sign up to the deal.

Let’s face it, there will be some effects of the US pullout from Paris climate deal. First of all, believe me, the US withdrawal will hurt the deal and the world.

There’s no doubt that H ave M y Say President Trump’s withdrawal will make it more difficult for the world to reach the goals that it set for itself in the Paris agreement - keeping global temperature rises well under 2 C. China has rapidly re-affirmed its commitment to the Paris accord and will issue a statement with the EU tomorrow pledging more greater co-operation to cut carbon.

“No one should be left behind, but the EU and China have decided to move forward,” said EU climate commissioner Miguel Arias Cañete. I strongly agree!

Ford Philippines, Gawad Kalinga Unveil Two New Water Facilities in Leyte O

ver 120 families and households in Leyte villages will benefit from the completion of two new water facilities built in Leyte through a partnership between Ford Philippines and Gawad Kalinga (GK).

Ford executives led the turnover of a new communal water facility that provides access to potable water for over 100 families in GK Sto. Nino Village in Bato.

Prior to the new facility being built, residents had to get water from a stream one kilometer from the village.

Ford executives also visited residents of GK Polpogan Village to unveil a concrete water tank that supplies clean water through PVC pipes directly to 26 households.

“Leyte was a unanimous choice for us to support, being one of the provinces that was greatly affected by super typhoon Haiyan in 2013,” said Josie Gonzalez, AVP for government and corporate affairs, Ford Philippines. “Ford is proud to continue initiatives that provide long-term benefits for these communities.”

Smart mobile data speeds take lead in PH June 5-11, 2017

‘Significant momentum’ seen for Smart LTE, 3G speeds, according to J.P.Morgan

LDT wireless subsidiary Smart Communications posted the highest average download speeds for both 3G and LTE, amid steadily improving scores through the months, the latest J.P.Morgan study showed.

J.P.Morgan’s Asia Network Quality study, which cited crowd-sourced data gathered by wireless coverage research firm OpenSignal, showed Smart LTE service leading nationwide in terms of speed, with average download speeds of 11.64 Mbps on the country level.

The May 2017 report also showed Smart leading across areas in terms of LTE service, with average download speeds of 12.52 Mbps in Metro Manila, 11.96 Mbps in the Visayas and 9.44 Mbps in South Luzon.

“PLDT’s Smart has significant momentum across all circles measured.

This likely implies a higher likelihood of market share gains going forward, with potentially better pricing power,” said J.P.Morgan in its study, which covers the months of February to

April.

Smart also led in terms of 3G speeds nationwide, posting 2.29 Mbps average download speeds on a country level.

Across areas, average download speeds on Smart’s 3G service were at 3.41 Mbps in Metro Manila, 1.74 Mbps in the Visayas, and 1.82 Mbps in South Luzon.

“There is still a lot of work to be done, but these test results show that our network improvement program is making progress.

They are a testament to Smart’s commitment to continuously contribute to improving overall speeds in the country,” said Mario G. Tamayo, PLDT and Smart Senior Vice President for Network Planning and Engineering.

Smart is reequipping its cell sites to use low-frequency bands such as 700 MHz and 850 MHz to provide better indoor coverage. It is also deploying highfrequency bands like 1800 MHz and 2100 MHz to increase the cell sites’ capacity to handle more calls, texts, and everincreasing mobile data traffic.

PLDT and Smart have committed to make LTE progressively available to 95% of the country’s cities and municipalities by the end of 2018.

“We have ongoing network improvements in Metro Manila, and we look forward to providing our subscribers there with better indoor LTE and 3G data signal, as well as better indoor 3G and 2G voice signal once these activities are done,” he said.

“With these improvements, our subscribers can live their digital lifestyles to the fullest, using a combination of LTEready devices, Smart LTE SIMs and Smart’s newest and fastest network, and be there like never before,” Tamayo added.

BEHANCE, the online portfolio arm of Adobe, held a roadshow in Cagayan de Oro City last June 5, 2017 and honored five artists with adjudged outstanding submitted works.

A team of three panelists were invited

by Behance Cagayan de Oro to judge the submitted works of 24 artists consisting of 15 illustrators, five graphic designers and four photographers during the activity held at 99 Ranch.

Behance Cagayan de Oro convenor Karl Adrian Aguro identified the jurists as Manila-based illustrator Anjo Balarda, Cagayan de Oro-based visual artist Chris Gomez and Cagayan de Oro-based visual artist

With an estimated population of around 500 graphic artists, Cagayan de Oro indeed has a prolific digital creatives sector.

And Behance wants to tap these artists, urging them to open up an account in Behance so they could showcase their works and reach out to other artists worldwide.

“Art Space” is the culminating program of the Summer Art Workshop. According to Teacher Nil Bagayna, the exhibit is named ‘’Art Space’’ to bridge the gap between art and the actual world we are living in. Proceeds of the artworks earned by Artsada artists will go to the relief operations

There are a lot of art exhibits sprouting in the city. This shows that Kagay-anons are capable of producing art and appreciate the local art and culture.
