une 19th is the birthday of our national hero—Dr. Jose Rizal— who turned 156 years old.
His life was snuffed off at the prime of his life when he was 37 years old. However, despite the briefness of his life on earth, yet he had so many accomplishments for his country to marvel and be thankful because his Mayor Oscar Moreno and Hiscom Chair Erlinda Burton heroism had stirred and unveils the centennial marker at the Rizal Monument awaken his countrymen’s at Plaza Divisoria 19 June 2017
consciousness to fight for justice and freedom. Jose Rizal was hailed as a hero in this country but also admired and adulated by other countries— Spain, Mexico, Peru, Germany—for what his heroism stood for. What made him a
hero? What are the fundamental principles and pre- disposing factors of becoming a hero? The word hero has varied interpretations and meanings: one is hero because he saved the life of another; or he has done significant feats that saved a group of people during conflict; or he gave his own life to save mankind, e.g. Jesus Christ. Perhaps to really understand what made Jose Rizal a hero, we
should backtrack a bit to his origin—where is from? Who were the people in his life; how was he raised or inculturated? Birth and early childhood José Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda was on June 19, 1861 in the town of Calamba, Laguna. He was baptized after three days in the Catholic Church in town. He was the 7th child of hero/PAGE 7

HE Rotary Club of Manila awarded freelance journalist and writer Rene Michael Baños as Provincial Journalist of the Year (Mindanao Daily News and Cagayan de Oro Times), the awarding of which was held at the New World Makati Hotel Ballroom in Manila on June 22.
Mr. Baños regularly contributes news stories for Mindanao Daily News and its sister lifestyle weekly newspaper, the Cagayan de Oro Times. “For over two decades, Mr. Baños has covered Zamboanga and Cagayan de Oro cities, providing readers insights into the history and heritage of
these places and their people,” the Rotary Club of Manila said in its citation. It added: “It is no mean feat that he continues to regale his followers with the local color woven into news events, issues and developments that affect not only Mindanao but the entire nation, as well.” “More than a crusading newsman, Mr.

Other awardees for print categories include Ms. Christina Ruby Mendez (Newspaper Female Reporter of the Year, The Philippine STAR), Mr. Charlie Manalo (Newspaper Male Reporter of the Year, The Daily Tribune), Ms. Marichu Villanueva (Female Opinion Writer of the Year, Columnist, The Philippine Star), Mr. Ramon Tulfo (Investigative Columnist of the Year, Philippine Daily Inquirer), Cebu Freeman (Regional Newspaper of the Year), Biz News Asia (Business Magazine of the Year), ENCLAVES (Glossy Lifestyle Magazine of the Year), Business Mirror (Business Newspaper of the Year), The Daily Tribune (Newspaper of the Year), and Mr.
Mr. Baños with his beloved wife
Jose “Joey” Maria Nolasco (Journalist of the Year, Executive Editor, Philippine Daily Inquirer). “As a provincial correspondent for four Manila-based daily broadsheets, I have seen how it is next to impossible for provincial desk editors to accommodate all stories from the provinces that matter, when they are flooded with material from the urban centers of the country and around the world deemed more news worthy,” said Mr. Baños. “Yet we face the same reality and risks as we go about our daily beats in the provinces, maybe even more so, because we cannot hide behind the anonymous masses from those who seek to bury the truth to protect their vested interests,” he said, adding, “But you, as members of the Rotary Club of Manila, have the means to help us who bring the news from the provinces.” He said: “By investing through regular ads or equity in provincial newspapers in your respective home towns, you can help professionalize our trade, and upgrade the quality of news by helping us
attain a respectable quality of life, that does not compromise the integrity of our news reporting, because often we are not only reporters, but also sales persons, marketing staff, newsboys, drivers, printing machine operators, and layout artists.” He added: “With due respect to our colleagues in the urban areas, it is only in provincial newspapers when the news that matter most to the populace can see the light of the day. They say an informed populace makes for honest governance. When you help us in the provinces give voice to the voiceless, and discharge our duties as the Fourth Estate, you help us lead our country to a brighter future.” He said: “It is with a humble and grieving heart that I accept this recognition in behalf of all my colleagues in the provinces who fell in the night, and the many more who continue to toil in fear and darkness. We stand for the Truth that is fair to all concerned, Truth that will build goodwill and better friendships, and Truth that will be beneficial to all concerned.”

Xavier Ateneo Engineering dean named fellow at 2017 United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia “Good leadership in higher education leads by example and enables others to succeed. It is also visionary, has high expectations, and is clear on how to implement and manage change to achieve its goals.” This is the opening line of the profile of Dr. Hercules R. Cascon in the roster of this year’s fellows of the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia. Cascon, dean of Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan’s College of Engineering, was recently named as one of 20 fellows comprising the United Board’s 2016-2017 cohort. He is one of six Filipinos in the program. The XU dean joins other highlyaccomplished leaders in higher education, representing a wide range of academic disciplines and administrative experiences across nine Asian countries and regions. Now on its 15th year, the fellowship sets to “work with colleges and universities to enhance Christian presence through whole person education in higher education in Asia.” It is designed to answer the needs of leadership development for midcareer faculty and administrators from Asian colleges and universities. This oneyear leadership development program features an intensive three-week summer institute at Harvard University;

online networking and mentoring; a semester-long placement in an Asian university; and a summative reflective seminar in an Asian city. As the leader of the College of Engineering or as they call themselves, “Engineering Warriors,” Cascon considers himself as one of the champions of outcomes-based education (OBE) in the university. He is chiefly responsible for the ongoing transition of the College of Engineering from the traditional inputbased to the OBEbased approach of curricular design, implementation, and management. He also partakes in the university’s effort in strengthening its research capacity by leading faculty members in applying for external research funding and in research output publication. Through the United Board Fellows Program, he hopes
to learn more about how to efficiently lead his faculty, staff, and students in OBE and research endeavors. Cascon, who holds a PhD in environmental engineering and biotechnology from Myongji University (Yongin Campus), South Korea, specializes in alcoholic biofuel separation using ionic liquidbased membranes in the pervaporation process. During the same time last year, XU Arts and Sciences dean Dr. Juliet Dalagan was also one of the 19 fellows at the 2016 United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia. In his message to the academic community, Xavier Ateneo president Fr. Roberto C. Yap SJ congratulated Cascon for his inclusion in the prestigious board. “His United Board fellowship will help us in our leadership development as Xavier aspires to
become a leading ASEAN university forming leaders of character,” Yap said. “Congratulations, Dr. Herks, and we look forward to the exciting things you will bring to XU from your fellowship.” Fellows have the opportunities to learn different styles of leadership, organizational structures, and educational management systems; alternative pedagogical styles to enrich their own teaching; and developments in their academic fields by auditing classes, meeting with their mentors and colleagues, and teaching occasional classes. Besides leading the Eng’g Warriors, Dr. Herks is also a family man and a pet lover. He allots time for reading and collecting books, watching movies with his wife and son, tending their garden at home, and playing with their dog. (SJP)

I AM THE WAY Many times we compare our life with a path. We talk about “the way”. We describe a determined man as, “He’s on the right track”. We go about our tracks, but we are reproved if we take a short-cut and not the path across a rice-field. We learn that there are many ways of solving problems. We also don’t want to stand in other people’s way. Sometimes we prefer to keep put of someone’s way and plan to avoid getting in their way. Often we try to find the golden middle course... . Many different ways have been offered to us during our whole life. How can we be able to choose the right and correct one? Which signs at our way can be trusted blindly? These are urgent and vital questions for all of us, and, especially during this time, very important like never before. In the past, traditions and customs are the paths, we took. Nowadays, we make decisions and long for the correct path mostly on our own. The German atom-physician Werner Heisenberg (1901-1976) described it very impressively. The man of today is like a ship’s captain. This ship is made out of iron. The compass needle is no longer able to show the Northern direction, as expected, because of the ship’s iron inf lexible body. You have one choice only: look up to the stars and study their guiding support!” We’re all happy and proud, when we have every need at our disposal. On the other hand, it only confuses our aims, goals, and
objectives in life. H ave M y Say “I am the way” is NOT ONLY a traffic sign - or a shepherd without responsibility - or a religious founder, who thinks, that “only he is the right way, if one follows Klaus Doring him”... . HIS way is the only right way. Only His deeds colored our fates. Let’s keep our eyes open for the important signs at our way, such as : - Unselfish participation in the life of others; - Courage to uncover prejudice; - Ready to help the unprotected and defenseless; - Struggle for freedom and justice; - Commitment for peace. Most of all: Love, which does not calculate and count. Love without measurements, boundaries and limits. If you can share with others, you’ll know one day in future, that someone walked this way - earlier then you - and, and, FOR YOU! +++ Email: doringklaus@gmail.com or follow me in Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter or visit www.germanexpatinthephilippines.blogspot. com or www.klausdoringsclassicalmusic. blogspot.com.

Shell’s most advanced1 Shell V-Power fuels are now formulated with its proprietary DYNAFLEX Technology. Shell V-Power Racing and Shell V-Power Gasoline fuels target two key factors that can impact engine efficiency and performance – namely friction and deposits. The new Shell V-Power Diesel is designed to help restore up to 100% of your engine’s performance by removing deposits from

The new Shell V-Power’s DYNAFLEX Technology can help restore your engine’s performance by actively removing and preventing the build-up of fuel system deposits and reducing wasted energy, delivering Shell’s best-ever premium performance and efficiency. Modern vehicle engines expose fuels to tougher conditions (e.g. higher pressures and temperatures) more than ever before. This creates potential for performance-robbing deposits to become stuck in key fuel system components such as shell/PAGE 6
