Empowering kids with special needs the JCI Macajalar 24K way

CI Macajalar 24K, Inc., a leading global network of young active citizens based here in Cagayan de Oro City, held Artsada 2 last June 18 at SM City Cagayan de Oro, an arts appreciation workshop dedicated to children with special needs from West City Central School. There were three disciplines that were introduced – arts and crafts making, talent showcase and fashion show. The arts and crafts making was divided into three – hand painting on bags, notepad making and paper flower making. For the latter two, the 81 kids were assisted by staff from CDO Handmade Paper Products and the children’s parents/ guardians. Project chair Nicole Cabanlet said the program aimed to have

these kids with special needs to maximize their potential capabilities and talents through arts. “Teaching and providing these special kids involving their parents create a more harmonious child-parent relationship as well as maximize their creativity and self-worth,” Cabanlet went on. “This time, we aim to strengthen the child’s primary development domains which includes physical, intellectual, empowering/PAGE 7

Xavier University among SM Supermalls celebrate the country’s 118th Independence Day Asia’s top universities On June 12, 2016, 58 SM malls nationwide united in observing the Philippines’ 118th Independence Day with a simultaneous flag-raising activity and numerous activities lined up for the occasion. In Mindanao, SM malls had a festive celebration through inspired installations and performances that were reflective of the cultural heritage of the region. At SM City Davao, the Independence Day was marked with a flag hoisting ceremony at the mall’s front covered walk along

Quimpo Boulevard. The occasion was kicked off by a parade of 118 colors. Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan debuted in the 2016 Asian university rankings released by London-based education and career consultancy Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). XU secured a spot in the 251-300 bracket in the QS University Rankings, released on Tuesday, June 14. “I am very pleased to inform the community that Xavier University was included in the 2016 Asian university rankings released by Quacquarelli Symonds,” XU president Fr Roberto C Yap SJ said. “The QS

University Rankings Asia highlights the top 350 Asian universities.” Xavier is one of the eight Philippine universities which were included in the said list, along with the University of the Philippines (#70), Ateneo de Manila University (#99), De La Salle University (#143), University of Santo Tomas (#157), Ateneo de Davao University (#251-300), Silliman University (#251-300), and University of San Carlos (#301-350). RDRRMC 10 gears up for earthquake drill Story and photos by MARK FRANCISCO

THE Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) in Northern Mindanao, led by the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) 10, is all set to hold the simultaneous earthquake drill for this quarter to be held nationwide this coming Tuesday, June 22. For the third quarter of 2016, the pilot site of the earthquake drill in Region 10 will be Lala National High School in Lanao del Norte. OCD 10 director Ana Cañeda will be there to lead the latest Duck Cover Hold edition regionwide. At exactly 9:00 a.m. on that day, whistles will be blared a minute long in all public school campuses,

government agencies and selected private schools and industrial and commercial sites all over Northern Mindanao signalling the start of the earthquake drill. Employees and clients in public and private offices and faculty and students in schools will then duck behind desks indoors for a minute then follow a designated marshal outdoors to flee on a relatively safe ground. Cañeda said that schools are prioritize in these earthquake drills because they are the most populated sites in the region at any given weekday. The Department of Education (DeEd) even has its own department order institutionalizing such

earthquake drills every quarter. There will also be a tsunami preparedness drill that will follow within this year, Cañeda added. These are

localized only in coastal areas though with past drills under the OCD 10 supervision hosted by the province of Camiguin and the municipality of Sultan Naga Dimaporo in

Lanao del Norte. Cañeda said there is no technology yet in the world that could predict earthquakes beforehand. Northern Mindanao has four fault lines – the Central Mindanao fault in Gingoog City; the Cabanglasan fault which runs from Balingasag to Claveria, Misamis Oriental with one end splitting to Malitbog, Bukidnon; the Tagoloan River fault from Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon to Villanueva, Misamis Oriental; and the Lanao fault system which spans the two provinces of Lanao del Norte and Lanao del Sur (the latter being part of Armm). It is after all for our own benefit,” Cañeda said.

DOZENS of exhibitors joined the three-day 8th Cagayan Construction Show (CAGAYANCON) held at the Rotunda of Limketkai Center in Cagayan de Oro City. Some 40 exhibitors in the construction industry coming from as far as Cebu and Manila joined the show held from June 10 to 12. Now on its eighth year, the annual event is considered the premiere construction show and exhibit in this part of the country. Also during the three-day exhibit, an orientation on the new digitized building permit management system of Cagayan de Oro, a first in the country. Other activities include the product presentations of Volvo, Holcim, Case, Highland and Goldtown. Civil Engineering students from Capitol University, Mindanao University of Science and Technology, Xavier University and COCPhinma showed their prowess on bridge building competition. Seven (7) NGCP scholars hailing from different municipalities in Nueva Vizcaya, La Union, Bulacan, Zambales, and Bukidnon are now ready to enter the real world as they graduate from college. Jennybeth Panas, Dorcas Castillo, Benedict Merwil Cion, Mark Bonnie Roxas, Steven John Armas, Golden Grace Batistis, and Jeremie Castro, took up Electrical Engineering, Agriculture, and Education in college, with NGCP shouldering their educational expenses and monthly allowances. As part of its scholarship program, NGCP offered members of its host communities, particularly from the indigenous and marginalized sectors, an opportunity to complete their college education. Jennybeth, a BS Education graduate from Nueva Vizcaya and a Kalanguya tribe member, said, “I availed my scholarship benefits relieved with the thought that my

mother will no longer work so hard just to provide for my tuition fees and allowances.” Golden Grace, a BS Agriculture graduate from Bukidnon and a Manobo tribe member, thanked NGCP “for sharing (its) blessings and for giving me that opportunity which became a big part of my success.” Dorcas, a BS Education graduate of Zambal-Aeta descent from Zambales, was just as grateful. “Dininig ng Panginoon ang aking panalangin. Laking tuwa ko nang ako’y matanggap sa scholarship program. Dahil sa tulong ng NGCP nakapagtapos ako sa kurso ko at ipinagmamalaki ko na ako ay isang Katutubo na natulungan ng NGCP,” she shared. Mark, a BS Electrical Engineering scholar from Bulacan, also stated, “The grant also enabled me to pay part of my Board Exam review fees. I hope that many more students will benefit from the program.” Jeremie, a BS Agriculture graduate from Bukidnon

confirmed, “The scholarship helped me pursue my studies and support my brother and sister. NGCP helped us continue our dream. It is one of the greatest blessings of my family.” NGCP confirms its continuous advocacy of education. “NGCP shares the Filipino parent’s dream of a college diploma for every child. Some of the best and brightest engineers and personnel, not only in NGCP but throughout the rest of the global industry, are products of scholarships and proof that financial difficulties should not hinder students from succeeding. At NGCP, we pledge our full support to continue giving the best opportunities to promising but financially incapable students across the country.” The scholarship program was institutionalized in 2015 as a nationwide CSR program for members of the indigenous peoples (IP) and indigent sector residing in communities hosting NGCP facilities. Earlier,

the scholarship grant covered IP members living in NGCP’s host communities from Bukidnon. With the extension of the scholarship to various areas in the Philippines where NGCP operates, a total of one hundred seven (107) students have benefitted from the scholarship program to date. NGCP is a privately owned corporation in charge of operating, maintaining, and developing the country’s power grid. It transmits highvoltage electricity through “power superhighways” that include the interconnected system of transmission lines, towers, substations, and related assets. The consortium, which holds the 25-year concession contract to operate the country’s power transmission network, is comprised of Monte Oro Grid Resources Corp. led by Henry Sy, Jr., Calaca High Power Corporation led by Robert Coyiuto, Jr., and the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) as technical partner.

Broken relationships? “Relationship” comes from the the Latin “referre” or “relatum”, which means “to bring back”. In one of my penultimate columns, I tried to explain, “when to keep our mouth shut”! Silence is also an answer - sure! But some of my readers posed the question, if also broken relationships can be only restored by silence or waiting. My answer is YES and/ or NO! Sometimes, it’s a miracle what a small dose of determined silence can do. Relationships are ALWAYS worth restoring, because life is all about learning how to love and how to value relationships and make the effort to maintain them instead of discarding them

whenever there is a rift, a hurt, or a conflict. The bible told us that all of us have been given the ministry of restoring broken relationships. Broken or cooled down relationships can be noticed at any corner. Restoring them is equal to peacemaking or peacekeeping but also not avoiding facing conflicts. Running away from a problem (and then keep the mouth shut!), pretending that the problem doesn’t exist or being to afraid to talk about it, that’s how the hypocritical coward acts. I always love to talk to God before I talk to a person. Later, I can find the right moment and take the initiative to restore broken relationships or face the problem.

I can even look out for others’ interests first. I can use “my telescope of life” (from the Greek word “skopos”) and play close attention. I can start with sympathy but not with great solutions right away. I can confess my part of a possible conflict. Paul said in Romans 12:18: “Do everything possible on your part to live in peace with everybody!” In resolving conflicts, a word not be spoken may be the choicest word of all, or IF WE TALK, HOW we say it, is important. The US-author Rick Warren confessed in one of his books; “We can establish a relationship even when we are unable to resolve our differences. Christians often have

legitimate, honest disagreements and differing opinions. But, we can disagree without being disagreeable. The same diamond looks different from different angles.
